AydenI want to say that my life began to spiral the day of the accident, but it really started when I was fourteen. When fate decided to be cruel and make him my stepbrother. Twelve years later, tragedy brings us back together. I wasn't sure what my reunion with Keoni was going to be like, but he hating me wasn't on my bingo card. Now we are living in our parents cabin, forced under one roof, haunted by demons neither of us want to share. KeoniHe was always meant to be mine, but because their happiness mattered more, I had to suffer with the term stepbrother. I made a terrible mistake at his graduation party, and I know that's why he's avoided me all these years. Now suddenly he's forcing himself into this cabin with me, and I'm afraid these walls aren't thick enough to save either of us from the fire that is slowly closing in.
This book is SO good. It has officially taken up permanent residence in my soul, and I will never forget these two or their story. Let me start by saying I finished this big chunker in ONE day. That’s right, I ignored my life. Responsibilities? Irrelevant. Sleep? Optional. I physically could not put this book down.
I thought after reading Heavy that nothing would top Cal and Ronan for me in this series… but Ayden and Keo stole my heart and threw away the key. This book has everything! Yearning that physically aches, suspense that keeps you turning pages, romance that feels earned, trauma and heartbreak that hit deep, and a storyline that hooks you and doesn't let go. Oof, so good!
We also get introduced to more of the neighbors in Sapphire Valley, and they play a strong supporting role that you can’t help but fall in love with every single character M.L. Burns brings to life. Her writing is incredible as she has this gift of making characters feel real, layered, and unforgettable.
Keo and Ayden’s story is heartbreaking… but it’s also so incredibly beautiful. There’s so much trauma and pain woven into their journey, but there’s also so much love and healing. This is officially one of my top reads of 2026, and I will be chomping at the bit for the next book.
Please pick this one up. It is SOOOOO worth it and definitely will be one of my top recommendations.
I don’t know why I never left a review of this book ….
This is a slowwww burn and I normally do not like slow burns but in a typical ML Burns fashion, she made me like it because the story is beautiful!
It follows Ayden and Keoni and the met when Ayden was 14 years old and they immediately felt attracted to each other, but their parents get married so they become stepbrothers and so they never gave it a chance but the feelings just grew. After 10 years and in 8 of those years they didn’t even see each other, they get to share a cabin because their parents tragically died in a car accident. One would think they get together right away right? Well nope…. They both have issues to work on and despite their undeniable love for each other tbh are still holding back. I loved it and now I can’t wait for the other books in the series because she set them up so well and I am itching to see them specially Levi and Evelyn… I also could barely contain myself every time when my favorite babies RONAN AND CALISTA appeared in the book. I ABSOLUTELY ADORE those 2, they still my favorites 🖤🖤🖤
I already knew going into this that anything Mel writes is going to emotionally wreck me… and once again she absolutely delivered.
Ayden and Keoni’s story is messy, raw, and deeply human in a way that makes it impossible to look away from. What starts as a taboo stepbrother dynamic quickly becomes something so much deeper - a story about guilt, trauma, and what it actually looks like to learn how to feel safe again.
Ayden’s journey was especially heartbreaking. After years of manipulation and abuse, he genuinely doesn’t know what love is supposed to look like. Watching him slowly relearn what safety, care, and trust feel like was one of the most emotional reading experiences I’ve had in a while. You can feel how badly he deserves softness.
And Keoni… my heart absolutely shattered for him. The weight of his guilt hangs over everything he does, and Mel writes that kind of quiet suffering so well. His love for Ayden shows up in the smallest moments - listening to him, caring for him, giving him space to exist without fear - and those moments honestly hit harder than any big romantic gesture.
Their relationship is a true slow burn, built on communication, patience, and learning how to hold each other’s pain. When things finally ignite between them, the payoff is so satisfying. The spice is definitely there (Mel DOES NOT MISS), but it never overshadows the emotional core of the story.
One of my favorite parts of this series continues to be Sapphire Valley itself. The neighbors, the found family vibes, and the little cameos from previous characters make the world feel so warm and lived in. It genuinely feels like these people could be real. (and they are my friends ok, let me be delusional)
This book is heavy in the best way - full of hurt, healing, yearning, and the kind of love that grows out of broken places.
Mel has this incredible ability to write characters who feel completely real, and once again she’s created a story that will stay with me for a long time!!!!!! (my babies fr)
I am absolutely in love with the Neighbors of Sapphire Valley series! Ayden and Keo’s journey toward becoming each other's home was everything I needed. Seeing them navigate their trauma together in that cabin was so moving. The stakes were high, the villain was truly terrifying, and the romance was breathtaking. I live for forbidden, soul-shattering love and the forced proximity in this book delivered the perfect amount of tension. And the spice was so filthy and perfectly executed! 🔥 Getting more glimpses of Ronan and Calista made my heart so happy, and I am officially obsessed with Clover the cat! I’m incredibly intrigued by the mystery surrounding Jayde and Ezra next. Thank you, Mel, for the ARC! I’m forever a fan of your work!
I unfortunately was not a fan of this one … I felt no chemistry between the characters in the past nor the present. Really disappointed because I LOVED Heavy by this author. This just doesn’t have the same feeling that book gave me. Also I wish authors would stop pushing side characters on us to promote the next book... I want the story to be focused on the couple it’s meant to be about. Idk these guys felt like two Barbie dolls who were being forced to kiss.
This story was very emotionally focused on mental health between our two MMC'S, Ayden and Keo.
Their strength, their fight, their insecurities.
M.L.Burns writes the sensitivities regarding mental health extremely thoughtful and well.
For me, I honestly found the story didn't grab me till around 40%. From then on, the storyline took me on the most heartbreaking and captivating read from their past desires, lost opportunities and heart wrenching secrets they have both suffered, kept within themselves. Fighting inner battles and trauma that interconnected within their lives.
We are introduced to other characters in this read that I'm very excited to get know in the next installment of this 'Neighbours Of Sapphire Valley' series, I can't wait!! The banter between some of these characters is fantastic!
I adore both of Ayden and Keo, through their emotional battles, near death experiences and healing, they found each other again.
Learning to trust, to open up to a future they have both been longing for their whole lives and fully deserve.
There are extremely sensitive topics in this story so please check your trigger warnings, though that being said it was done beautifully.
Thank you, M.L. Burns, for the ARC of this book! ✨
This is a very emotional story about Ayden and Keoni, two men with a complicated past. When a tragedy brings them back together, all their old feelings love, pain, and longing come rushing back.
I really appreciated how carefully the book handles mental health. It talks openly about grief, trauma, and guilt in a way that feels honest and real. Some topics are heavy, so check the trigger warnings, but everything felt meaningful rather than dramatic just for shock value.
The story is full of yearning and second chances. Watching them slowly rebuild trust and find their way back to each other was heartfelt.
The beginning was a bit slow for me, and the only small issue I had was that there were many side characters, which sometimes made me feel a little confused. But once the story picked up, I was fully invested.
If you like emotional, taboo leaning romance with deep healing and redemption, Hollow is definitely worth reading. 🌻
After the tragic loss of their parents stepbrothers Keoni and Ayden end up living in their parents old cabin together that was left to them and they are forced to face their rocky past and attraction to one another. I loved how sweet these two were to eachother and I’m a sucker for the sunshine nickname any day of the week. You have Keoni who is a firefighter with a big ol heart and carries a lot of guilt and then there’s Ayden who is a nurse on temporary leave because he needs some time to work through his demons but the way they heal eachother in here was absolutely beautiful. (Also F Micheal!) We even got character crossovers from Heavy and met the other cabin inhabitants which I loved! If you want a sweet MM romance with some dark emotional themes you’ll find it in Hollow.
A huge thank you to the author for sending me this ARC

When I tell you that I devoured this book I genuinely mean that I couldn't put it down. I loved the first book in the series and I was so happy to be back with the Saphire Valley community. This book is so incredibly different to the first book yet it was absolutely amazing and just as good in my opinion. Please be sure to check trigger warnings prior to diving into this one because there is a lot of traumatic events that take place throughout, there is a lot of psychological damage inflicted on one MMC in particular due to a previous relationship and there is a lot of emotional turmoil both of our MMCs must work through.
This book has so many of my favourite tropes including but not limited to it being an MM romance, step-brothers, forced proximity, forbidden love, it's always been you vibes, who hurt you and of course firefighter x ICU Nurse. This mix of tropes was absolute perfection if you ask me and every single element was written into the story so beautifully.
Ayden and Keo stole my heart from the minute I started reading about them. We do flick between timelines and get little glimpses of them first being attracted to each other, becoming step brothers and then of their individual lives in the lead up to their reunion. Please bear in mind the reason why they do end up in the same place together again was quite sad but that only pulled them closer together in my opinion. There was so much unresolved tension between these two, so much yearning, a lot of heartbreak and of course a whole heap of trauma. For the entire book I was just hoping they finally got their happy ending together because they both truly deserved it after all the curveballs life just kept throwing at them.
Keo is our grumpy/broody MMC in this relationship. He doesn't really like to open up when it comes to his emotions and he chooses to flee when it all becomes a bit too much for him. He has taken the steps to seek guidance and is working on coping mechanisms and letting down those impossibly high walls of his. Underneath the grumpiness he is actually the biggest sweetheart who cares deeply about those important to him and will do anything in his power to help them and to see them happy. He is honestly the best guy and I couldn't think of anyone better for Ayden. Keo is firefighter in Saphire Valley after a recent transfer and whilst he is settling into the new job he is also trying to deal with the grief that rocked his world. He was never supposed to share a house with the stepbrother he has yearned for all these years but fate definitely had other plans and I was very much here for it.
Then we have Ayden. He is a little more reserved and is battling his fair share of trauma that has left him with severe panic attacks. He is trying to find his footing again after leaving an abusive relationship that left him very isolated from those he cares about. Whilst he is currently dealing with an immense amount of grief he is somewhat glad that it brought him back to Keo even though that means strained interactions and wishing life was different. As I learnt more about Ayden's life my heart broke for him repeatedly because he didn't deserve a single thing that happened to him. He is the purest of souls and works hard to help people in his role as an ICU nurse.
These two complimented each other so well and as they started to address the rift and tension between them the result was definitely worth it. Adapting to life together, overcoming obstacles together and encouraging each other to grow individually was one of my absolute favourite things in this story. The plot twists definitely packed an emotional punch and at times I was left teary eyed and praying things worked out for the better. I also loved that we get to meet a few of the other neighbours in the Saphire Valley community so I am very excited to see where the rest of the series takes us.
The emotional depth to both of our characters was another thing that I absolutely loved because you can tell the author genuinely wanted to do these heavier topics justice and that really showed through her character profiles and development.
I would 1000% recommend this book! Thank you so much to the author for allowing me to read this early because it was my most anticipated release of the year and it did not disappoint. I'm excited for whatever comes next.
I was so lucky enough to receive the ARC and I devoured this 😍 Firstly… the tension and yearning throughout this story was done so WELL. It’s exactly what I look for in a second-chance romance. It was beautiful, tragic & healing all in one addictive story. Ayden and Keo were true soulmates, and the dual past-and-present timeline added so much depth to their relationship and their history. 🥹
I especially loved Keo’s protectiveness over Ayden, it was handled in such a beautiful way to the story. But I’ve truly NEVER HATED someone’s ex more than I have with Michael 😡😤
The mental health representation was handled just incredibly. My heart was truly aching for both of these characters. This has become my favourite book by Mel. Just ADORED this story. I could not recommend more 🥹
“My heart wants him—and knowing it can’t have him hurts so fucking much.”

ARC read! 📚 I love Mel’s writing and this last year I’ve found out MM romances are my guilty pleasure, so - easy 5 ⭐️. They are both awesome characters who represent real everyday struggles, which makes them so easy to relate to and love. Keoni - oh my, that man is perfect! Strong, sweet, protective.. and veryy dirty. 😏 The found family - amazing! I actually teared up in the end. Can’t wait to find out what was hinted in the epilogues. 🤔
P.S. I wish you all to have that kind of group chat with your neighbours!
“With him, I’m not hollow.”
“You live, I live.”
“Soulmates aren’t immune to hard times; we take them on together, because we know the person meant for us is someone worth the fight.” 🌻🔥
Gimme a second while I process how phenomenally rich this book was!! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
I am a huge lover of MM romance and this has now taken the cake! F*ck the cake, the whole damn bakery!
Wow 🤯 I thought Heavy (the first book) was dark and surprisingly touching … this just upped the anti! It’s not as dark as the first book but it’s sooo much more touching and emotionally packed!
This is a beautiful and deeply emotional story 🤍 Emotional not only from the plot and everything the characters go through, but also from the way feelings, reactions, and inner struggles are written. Exactly what we want in romance - to believe those feelings and never question the pull, chemistry and devotion to one another. I remember having similar thoughts after reading Heavy (glad I read that before my ultimate MM spiral 😅). It’s the kind of book that leaves you with a sense of calm and satisfaction when you finally reach The End. This is also the kind of story where everything simply works. The writing pulls you in, the characters are lovable and relatable, the world feels alive and solid, and the plot remains strong from beginning to end - and tbh, I did not expect that level of drama and crazy in the end. And of course, the romance, full of that delicious yearning that makes your heart ache and love that feels pure, big, and almost magical 🤍 the cover is crazy beautiful by the way 💛
I absolutely ate up the suspense in this one. It had me hooked and constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. The taboo element added such a fun, slightly unhinged edge that made it even harder to put down.
Ayden was a little soft for me at times, but watching him find his voice and step into his power by the end was so satisfying. My heart genuinely broke for everything he went through. You could feel the weight of it.
Keoni though? Top tier. The love he had for Ayden was intense, unwavering, and borderline obsessive in the best way. The way he showed up and protected what he loved made this story for me.
4⭐️3.5🌶️ I’ve been waiting for this book to come out since I read Heavy last year. This author just GETS the taboo romance trope. I can’t wait for others in this series!!
First of all, thank you to M.L. Burns for the advance reader’s copy!
Hollow is the second instalment in The Neighbours of Sapphire Valley series. The story follows Ayden and Keoni — step-brothers by marriage — and their intense chemistry. It’s a story about love and loss, forgiveness, vulnerability, and healing. Their story was so beautiful and heartbreaking. ❤️🩹
I really liked Heavy, so I was very excited for Hollow. I enjoyed the story and the characters. Even though I sometimes got a bit confused about who some of the characters were. I did not get the same butterflies as Heavy, but still a solid read!
This is a story about healing, a balm to the soul that you didn’t knew you needed until it heals every scar that was left behind!
Spice 3 🌶️ Story ♾️
Hollow by ML Burns is the second book in the Neighbours of the Sapphire Valley series. This is an interconnected standalone but I urge you to read Heavy before, as it will have an even bigger impact on you.
Obsessed is a gentle word to describe my feelings for this book, M.L. Burns gave us a story to rave about for years to come. As forbidden as this romance is in the eyes of the ton, even sweeter in the eyes of the lovers who will make Ayden and Keo part of their souls. M.L. Burns outdid herself, elevating her writing to a richer and even more alluring story that will captivate every reader who dares to pick up this book. MM is looking good on you Mel! I want more!! This is a story that can be sensitive to some, dealing with delicate subjects but very rewarding outcomes to a perfect happy ending, but it wouldn’t be in M.L.’s fashion if she didn’t take us through a rollercoaster until we get there. Painful and soul-shattering at times, this book is a perfect mental health rep with impressive realistic trauma woven into the journey. But this is a story about HEALING!
This was like a balm to my soul, reading it was healing parts of me that I didn’t even know I needed healed. Ayden and Keony will forever live rent-free in my head, their love is so powerful and beautiful. I just want to put Ayden in a cocoon and take care of him, Keony that man oh …. Just a dream …. He needs so many hugs, they are perfect for each other! I loved peeking through the valley and seeing what’s out there, maybe even some familiar faces… but what was even the cherry on top is that “vampire” book making the rounds. IYKYK.
M.L. Burns is the queen of spice, no one can serve us better than her, and all I have to say is get your toys, partners ready, because they are much, much needed!
My first MM dark romance book. It did not disappoint!
This was such an emotional journey with these two characters. I truly understood the struggle Ayden was going through, but my heart broke so much for Keo. He was carrying an unbearable amount of guilt, all fueled by his grief… and you could feel it 💔
As heartbreaking as their past was, their love story turned out to be incredibly beautiful and deeply emotional. And the tension between them? The slow, aching build-up? Imagine. Forced proximity. In a cabin. Yeah… exactly 😏
I’m already so excited for the next book featuring Jayde and Ezra. That mystery is absolutely killing me. I need the book immediately 😩
Thank you, Mel, for sending me an ARC!🖤
“Is it possible for a heart to break but still beat?”
“Guilt is such an interesting sensation. One that is so difficult to find relief from. It's like a disease that's incurable but isn't visible on the outside. One that doesn't always show itself, but in the midst of the memory of it, crawls across my skin like little needles threatening to break into my muscle. It's terrible.”
“We'll fit together, even if our pieces have been misshaped and mishandled. Over time, they'll form a perfect picture-one that only he and I can create.”
“For the first time in so long, I don't feel hollow—I feel whole.”
“Guilt is... lonely. It's different than loss, different than... physical pain. It's a place of darkness that seems endless, and the only thing present is the reason for it. It hangs there, in a room with no windows or doors. It doesn't let anyone in, and it sure as hell won't let you out.”
Did I love this book? Yes! But did I expect more from it? Also yes...
I really did enjoy this book, Ayden and Keo are so precious to me but I can't shake off the feeling that this wasn't quite it. I love love loved Heavy, the first book in the series, and compared to that this just didn't hit the same. I mean the author says this is a completely different book with a whole other vibe so I shouldn't have been that surprised.
While yes, I did love the two MMC's of this books, it just feels a bit like I loved the side characters more. I was so happy about the Callista and Ronan mentions and scenes, I missed them. The scene where Cal finds out about Ayden and Keo and Ayden is like "aren't you gonna judge me for being with my step brother?" and Cal goes "well my man was my step uncle" is one of my absolute faves.
I loved Levi and Evelyn and I held hope until the very last page that the next book in the series would be about them but sadly it's not. I'm still really hopeful for their book tho because they're so iconic but they're already married and there's a possibility for them to move out of the Sapphire Valley but please give me their book I need it. I am interested in the couple that the next book is going to be about don't get me wrong, it sounds like a good plot and all ... but Levi and Evelyn just took the stage.
This book was very good. It was most definitely a slow burn since they get together at like 50%. Both characters struggled so much with their own demons and they deserved their happily ever after completely.
Thank you ML Burns for this arc🥹 and this story ❤️🔥❤️🔥🌻
I really loved Keo and Ayden! They are both such sweeties and the YEARNING!!! so was amazing.
I love how the story jumps from past to present to show their story, The plot was good, I cried and laughed, their chemistry was incredible, and I was so so happy to see cal and ronan again! Grumpy ronan was hillarious🥰 Also intrigued by the new caracters we got to meet, and hopefully read about in the future!
tropes: step brothers firefighter × nurse hurt/comfort praiseeee🙂↕️ yearning for years mental health rep trauma posessive mmc forced proximity ❤️🔥🌻❤️🔥🌻❤️🔥🌻❤️🔥🌻❤️🔥
Back in Sapphire Valley where the scenery is a beaut and step brothers be f*cking 🤭
This book is different to Heavy although they are in the same world please expect a different vibe. Keoni and Ayden the two lost boys that find each other 🥹 I loved getting to know these characters.
Overall, I enjoyed the characters but there were things in the story I didn’t love. I felt like I was really missing that taboo element and it felt more of a contemporary suspense with darker themes. This would be the perfect intro to dark taboo MM romance. The heavy topics were handled with such care and I will always applaud ML on her ability to do so 🌻
Arc read 🥹 I fucking love M.L writing style 😍 Her characters are always like made from blood and flesh. I can feel their emotions like I'm the one feeling it 🫣 So fucking good
I received this ARC and couldn't wait to jump back into the Sapphire Valley craziness and there was definitely no lack of craziness in this one. Poor Ayden. He was so broken and yet stayed so hopeful. Keo had so much guilt and his own demons but his sunshine was there no matter what. They truly saved each other.
The "Family" of the Valley was absolutely hilarious. Seeing Ronan and Cal again was awesome. I can't wait to see what happens with the next book.
Hollow is the second book in the Sapphire Valley series and follows the story of Ayden, a nurse, and Keoni, his stepbrother and a firefighter. After the death of their parents, they are reunited after being separated for six years.
This is a story about pain, guilt, trauma, and a forbidden love that has been smoldering like fire for ten years. The emotional intensity between Ayden and Keoni is so gripping, and their past makes their connection even more raw and compelling.
For the first time, I encountered a book that deeply explores both psychological and physical abuse against a man, which is such an important and rarely addressed topic. It’s handled with honesty and depth, showing that anyone can become a victim, regardless of gender.
Ayden truly broke my heart - I can’t imagine how he survived six years with someone like Michael. Keoni quickly became my favorite, struggling with guilt over their parents’ death and facing his own pain.
The challenges they face while resisting their attraction are heartbreaking. And honestly… their self-control is impressive 🤣
I’m also excited to return to Heavy, because Callista and Ronan appear in this book and I really liked them. Evelyn and Levi also stole my heart, and I hope the next book focuses on them.
This is my first book by M.L. Burns, and her writing style is captivating, emotional, and immersive. Definitely not my last. I’m so glad that in the end, every character got what they deserved.
A huge thank you to M.L. Burns for trusting me with this ARC - it was a true pleasure to read 💛
Obsessed, the forbidden romance, the sweet yearning Another amazing read by ML, the story built from a slow burn, to a full on blazing volcano.
My heart breaks for Ayden, for all that he endured, but also how strong and brave he is, for breaking free from his fear, and going back home.
Keoni too went back home after their parents passed, it was emotional to read through his thought and feelings when Ayden showed up, year after their last meeting, and leaving unspoken hurt.
Ayden was not 'able' to go home for years, and his family just assumed he was living his best life, while Keo thought he was still holding a grudge from their teenage years episode...
Their forced proximity, as they stayed in their parents cabine, allowed them to open up about their past, confessing what they both went survived.
My #1 rule for 5stars read,is automatically : if I cry, if I laughed real hard, if I forgot my own life ...
The last half of the book built a high tension, and intense suspense edging toward a final that left me breathless, let's just say both Ayden & keoni had some close calls 🥺💔
This is my second MM romance, although I was not sure what to expect, I had no doubt in ML's writing style and plotting, it had me sitting at the edge of my couch, and fanning myself on occasion, those scenes were hot hot hot!
If you haven't yet, pick up book 1 of the neighbors of Sapphire valley, it is addicting and you will come back looking for more!!
I fell so in love with Ayden & Keoni while reading Hollow! Their story is so beautiful, yet also painful at times. Both of these men have been through some trauma that seems to keep catching up with them, but it's so obvious that they never stopped thinking about each other over the years. The yearning in this had me dying for them to be together and I love when they finally gave in! Check your TW if you need to before diving into this one.
And while I already loved Cal & Ronan from Heavy, I really enjoyed seeing them pop up in this book and meeting some other neighbors of Sapphire Valley! I can't wait for more of this series and this found family is growing bigger in my heart!
What to expect: 🖤 nurse x firefighter 🖤 step brothers 🖤 forbidden 🖤 dark suspense 🖤 mental health rep 🖤 possessive mmc
Thank you so much ML Burns for the chance to read/review an early copy!
