Some secrets should never be told. Some crimes can never be forgiven.
Following a private tragedy, TV historian Kit Pevensey and his wife Lissa seek respite in the quiet of rural Somerset to compile a village history for a friend.
But when their friend vanishes without a trace, the Pevenseys’ research stirs memories of dangerous secrets. Kit and Lissa are still reeling from the loss of their child. Thinking a change would help they agree to help a friend with some research. They get caught up in their friend’s disappearance. This was a good mystery with a few surprises thrown in.
Seeking respite in rural Somerset, TV historian Kit and his wife agree to compile a village history for a friend. When the friend disappears and his dog is found dead, Kit sets about tracking the killer. But the historian has his own issues to deal with, and things quickly escalate into a web of lies and deceit.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and while it gets off to a bit of a slow start the pace quickly picks up and the action moves fast from there onwards. The characters are an interesting bunch though I did get a bit confused at one point and had to backtrack a bit to sort out who was who. For the most part the writing is very good, though the author’s overuse of ellipses and exclamation marks is irritating – you can only have so many exclamations and dramatic pauses before they become meaningless. Aside from that, it’s an exciting tale with plenty of twists and turns along the way.
Avalon Sky by Jill Todd is a contemporary thriller and part of A Kit Pevensey Thriller series. We see that actions in the past have a far-reaching effect as long held, and buried, secrets come to life. A true nature has been hidden since before World War II. As a whole different personality emerges, the reader is shocked. We witness the value of true friendships as opposed to false friends who are focused on hate and hiding. Evil walks amongst the characters. Evil has been hiding in plain sight. The deeds of the night are being revealed in the light. The story is entertaining and exciting as Jill Todd weaves her tale. The reader is engrossed in the action which comes thick and fast. I received a free copy via Rachel’s Random Resources for a blog tour. A favourable review is not required. All opinions are my own.
Avalon Sky by Jillian Todd is a mystery and thriller written by the author about a couple names Kit and Lissa who head to a small village called Somerset to gather information on the village's history. However their friend disappears and his dog is found dead, there are questions and concerns that drags Kit into the investigation to find his friend. The author putting into the story that actions have consequences and secrets coming to light after years being buried is realistic and well written in this book. I like how the lies and deceit where kind of a shock every time one came up. The characters are amazing and I love Kit and his wife in particular, I would want to see these two in another upcoming investigation soon. I loved the writing style as the first few pages in the Prologue really grab the readers and pull them into the story!
This is a clever story from an excellent writer. I found Jill's writing to be evocative in almost every sentence. The characters are well drawn and believable - especially Kit, who I would love to meet ... I particularly admire how the tension scenes are written and fight scenes are handled for a deliberate slow read before the final outcome. I couldn't stop reading the novel once I had started. The locations are wonderful. After reading about Lundy Island, I definitely want to visit.
