Thank you to HarperImpulse via Netgalley for the review copy.

Did I like this book?

This book was a lot of fun, and while it wasn't without its problems, overall I quite enjoyed it. The premise was interesting, the plot moved along at a decent pace, and I loved the setting of downtown London. There were many times I found myself giggling at Amber and her antics - she definitely got into some tight spots!

But, although the characters were unique and oftentimes hilarious, I felt that they needed more depth. I lacked any sort of connection with them, and it could have something to do with the fact that the book was written entirely from Amber's point of view. While Amber is frequently amusing and constantly getting into mischief, she's also very flaky and irresponsible, not to mention self absorbed. I would have loved to know more about her thee friends and what made them tick, but it was all just speculation on Amber's part.

Will you like this book?

This book reminds me a bit of "Bridget Jones's Diary", so if you enjoy that style of writing and humour, I think you'll probably enjoy "The Temp".

Will I read more by this author?

I think Emily Benet has tremendous potential and I will surely be interested in future books by her!

My rating: 3.5 stars!

I don't even know where to start with this review! I'm totally utterly completely madly in love with this book.

It has been a while since I laughed out loud this much while reading a book! There was excitement, surprise, anger, heartbreak, and love.. What could be better? It has the right ratio of everything. Definitely worth reading. I don't see this as a romance-only story! Yes, the romance is there, but I love this whole "finding your true calling" and "finding yourself" angle.

We are first introduced to Amber Thompson, a twenty-something year old who is going through the "what do I want to do with my life" phase most of us are hit with after graduation, until she comes across some bananas that put her on an adventure. I loved Amber, she is very relatable, and has a great sense of humor.

Amber has a best friend, Farrell, who is ridiculously wonderful.. I've totally fallen in love with him! She also has a quirky (and a little strange) flatmate/friend, Egbert (Egg!) who is quite unique. Her friend Bibiana (I still don't feel a 100% about her) is also in the picture.. last but not least, Elliot, her I'll-transport-you-into-a-BBC-period-costume-drama love interest.

I can't recommend this book enough. It is definitely a favourite!

This book is amazing, but personally I liked "Spray Painted Banana's" better as a name. and the cover was cooler. But apart from that, EPIC

This is billed as a Wattpad sensation, and has great reviews anywhere you look.

But for me it fell a bit flat. The story was good, pretty original. The characters were ok, if a bit cliche. It just seemed to run long....without really going anywhere. There's a love story with the wrong guy, until she finds the right guy, some romantic misunderstandings, friendship, love, work issues....the usual. I didn't find the book overy funny, or heart breaking, or entertaining. It was a good read, but not one of my favorites.

An homage to Bridget Jones, I guess, but with a heroine who is far more self-absorbed, infuriatingly so. I wanted some characters drawn out more, but I enjoyed many of them, as well as the send-up of the art scene. A little more emotion, a slightly less annoying main character, and I would have loved this.

I loved every bit of it.
Amber and Farrell were amazing characters.
I simply wish it would be more successful, because it deserves it.

This is a trimmed down version of my review, to view the full review visit The Book Ramble.

I received a copy of this book from HarperImpulse on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Amber has no special skills, not any particular interests, which has left her working as a temp, currently at a catering company. She spends her free time going to art shows she doesn't understand, and greatly dislikes, to get free wine. She meets an art financier at her temp job and convinces him she's an artist which leads to her becoming an actual artist, just to prove herself I guess? Her art project? Bananas. Along with her friends she plants brightly painted bananas around London, for no actual reason and somehow garners a bit of fame. And while discovering her "true passion" she also finds love unexpectedly.

Amber wasn't a particularly great narrator. She's a little dull, and a little dimwitted. She is very literal in her understanding of things people say which is somewhat infuriating, especially because for some reason she decides she wants to be an artist. Beyond this she isn't particularly interesting. There's nothing about that stands out aside from her, self-admitted, lack of culture, and her need to understand things very literally. She's probably the most boring character in the book. She also lacked agency for most of the book, really riding on the efforts and force of most of the other characters despite insisting that the art was her thing.

I found the romance with Elliot hard to buy into. I didn't for a moment find him charming, though she seemed to think he was amazing, and that led to a really lacking romance. To me, Elliot was right away an obvious bad choice for a guy to be with. I mean even the weird artist Montague seemed like a better love interest. This led to the love "triangle" bit getting a little dull because Elliot was clearly the worst choice ever.

I would have to say that the friends are the more interesting characters in the book. Bibiana, Amber's Argentinian friend, was my least favourite because she was a little like Elliot. She sort of came in out of nowhere bossed everyone around and screwed everything up. Egg was my favourite character in the book because he was a little strange and had a little more...depth. He had this amazing subplot hidden underneath all of the confusing art nonsense that made me laugh out loud at the reveal. Finally, Farrell, Amber's best friend, is one of the sweetest characters in the book. I thought he was adorable right off the bat and was pleased with the development of his character later on.

In terms of plot I think its a little weak. It was a fun plot. Her guerilla banana art was cute. Overall I just thought it was all lacking any reasoning. There was no motivation to do any of the stuff that Amber did and yet she was constantly active.

Finally, I thought the writing itself was good. The use of language was good for me. I think there was some very emotional scenes that were written well. Benet has a skill at writing scenes that are tense or filled with anxiety.

This is another book where I liked the book but I felt there was some work that needed to be done. The beginning of the book especially is a little slow and uninteresting, whereas later scenes are tense or funny and keep you engaged and it seems so incongruous. I think it is quite a fun read though, especially for fans of British chick lit.

This book is bananas! Completely bonkers, utterly entertaining and definitely bananas!

Amber has been working as a temp since she graduated university, and she is fed up of temping, and wants to do something with her life to make an impact. She loves attending art gallery openings with her best friend Farrell and at the first opening we see, I loved how they were taking the mickey out of modern art installations. They only attend the openings for the free wine.

It is at one of these art galleries and thinks she should become an artist. After all some "modern art" does look as though anyone can create it, so why not Amber?

While she is temping at a catering company, and typing up label after label for goujons, she acquires a huge amount of bananas, or at least saves them from being thrown out, for smelling like bleach. These bananas become key in her quest to become an artist.

There is a whole host of characters and a couple of subplots, including the unlikely love affair of Amber's slightly oddball house-mate Egbert (known as Egg), and a kitten they buy, as everyone loves youtube videos of kittens, and Amber thought she could at least become known for her cute kitten videos if nothing else.

I can't stress how much I enjoyed reading this story. It is light hearted, it makes fun out of art, and doesn't take itself too seriously either. The Temp is inspiring too, as if you are fed up with your life, then why not try and do something not matter how seemingly small, to make an impact on people.

Of course this has been billed as a romantic comedy, and it definitely has romance. There are three main men in this story, but I won't tell you too much about any of them! Egbert is her geeky housemate, Farrell is the writer/poet and Amber's best friend. And there is Elliot, who is a rich patron of the arts, and does he want more than just helping out Amber with her artistic quest?

The Temp is wacky and zany and so much fun. It is a true romantic comedy and I loved reading it so much, I was smiling the whole way through.

I was lucky enough to spend a rather interesting day with Emily Benet in November 2013 when we were both part of the E17 Storywalk.

The Temp tells the story of twenty-something Amber, who has been undertaking a series of temping jobs while she decides what she wants to be when she grows up. Having lurched from one drunken gallery private view to another with her best friend Farrell, she decides “I could do this” and so becomes ‘an artist’.

The book takes us on her whirlwind experience of becoming an artist, starting with a little white lie, via a dashingly handsome sponsor, complete with a set of supportive friends and ending up…well, you’ll have to read it to find that out.

I have to say, I really liked Amber and her friends, and there were some fantastic original artistic ideas in the book. It made me quite sad that it wasn’t a true story! However, the story was not at ALL what I was expecting from the title. I thought that we were going to be treated to little vignettes of life as a transient being – a slice of life in all the odd jobs that temps have to endure.

Apparently the original title was Spray Painted Bananas. Emily wrote the book on the online platform Wattpad where it reached over a million hits! I can see that the title maybe gives away some of the plot, but I think I prefer it, personally.

I really enjoyed the quick snippet of Amber’s life and experience that we’re treated to, but for once, I wish a book had been longer. I wanted more! Perhaps there’s another Amber story for us to be treated to? Tie Dyed Cauliflowers? Emulsion Rolled Kumquats? I shall be waiting Emily! ;)

The Temp is only 99p on Kindle at the moment. Go on girls, treat yourselves. OR you can check out the trailer and maybe win a copy? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8Q8U...

While I liked the second half of the book, I had some problems with the beginning: it was slow and, for the most part, I didn't get where the story was going but, even more, I didn't get Amber!
Contrary to what the title would let you think, The Temp is not about a girl being a temp - at least that's not what the book shows us - but it's about a girl who's bored of her life and, for a little white lie told to a handsome stranger, she decides to become an artist. As I said I didn't get Amber that much; she has no real motivation for her actions if not trying to prove something to a stranger, and she's very self-centered. I didn't get the impression she was a good friend to Egg or Farrell since, most often than not, she wasn't even listening to them! Moreover, Amber's revelation about her feelings for Farrell felt a little sudden: she doesn't try to understand or explain these new feelings she has for him, she just suddenly knows - thanks to a kiss and a dream - that she always loved Farrel more than a friend. I can't say that I knew it too!

Taken as a whole, The Temp is an enjoyable story but there are some aspects I didn't like that much, mostly Amber's indecisiveness! Still, I'd like to thank the author for the chance of reading her book through NetGalley and I hope she appreciates my honest opinion.

The title drew me to this book but if you're expecting office romance with a series of billionaire bosses you will be disappointed. I like the quirkiness of the first few chapters. The characters are vivid; full of flaws and oddities, which make them worth getting to know. I particularly like Amber's flat mate Egg.
The plot is simple and easy to follow with no real surprises. I can understand why this story is popular on Wattpad it would be better read as a serial than a novel. The pacing in the middle sections is too slow for me. That said it is full of satirical humour and light romance and definitely worth a read.

The Temp, By Emily Benet

When I started reading this book, The Temp, by Emily Benet, I wasn’t sure if I would like it or not. It made me yawn. Some books do that to me at the beginning, seem a little slow. Well it did take me about 40% of the book and I was then hooked.

Amber is a college grad, working temp jobs, trying to decide what she wants to do. One of her past times with her friends is to go to modern art galleries opening for free wine. One day while working her temp job a customer came into the office, he wanted to set up a catering for an art gallery opening. He was of course a good looking art promoter. Of course he asked Amber out, they did go out, but she told him she was an artist, which at the time she wasn’t, just someone who liked the free wine at the art gallery openings. You will have to read this book to find out what happens.

Well I like the book, the story, and the way it ended, not a typical ending and I feel Amber did well.

Thanks for Netgalley for letting me review this book.

Unusually, I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I'd known all along how it was going to end. It would have kept me going for the first quarter or so, when the story was still getting a feel for itself and Amber was a bit adrift. Finally I got an inkling of how things might turn out, and I started to relax into it. I could say 'ah, it's one of those stories' and allow the plot to run without worrying that characters I disliked were going to come out on top.

I really liked the art aspect of the story, probably because I was an art student myself, have been to a ton of open evenings for the free wine, and know all about the pretentious rubbish the art world can come up with. I also really enjoyed reading about Egbert and his little side-story. He was a bizarrely well-developed character in a cast of somewhat wooden creations.

The Temp is definitely one of those books that has really good aspects, and not so great points. Taken as a whole, it's enjoyable though, and it was interesting to see a successful Brit Wattpad writer.

I’ll get right to the point. I’m not a huge fan of contemporary romance and humour in the same novel, I find that usually the humour is too immature for my liking and it ruins the book. The Temp, however, I found very enjoyable. I got the main character’s humour, even found myself smiling at it, and that isn’t something which happens often.

The book had its iffy parts, where I found the romance lacking slightly and it had a slow start, but if you bear with it you’ll find it gets better, I promise! The further into the novel the better it gets. I can’t deny that I enjoyed the book. It was creative in the way it was written, and that’s what kept me reading the most. I loved Amber’s quirky thoughts, and everything about her really.

I feel like there isn't much to say for this book, I'd recommend reading it for yourself. Even if you're not a massive fan of humour, give it a go. You might find yourself pleasantly surprised.

I bought this book having met the author at a conference, and after listening to her talking about social media for authors. She certainly incorporates her knowledge of social media into this novel. I learned from her that the book was originally called Spray Painted Bananas, and I believe that was a much more original title. Purely from the cover design and title that Harper Impulse have given this novel I would have identified it as generic chick-lit and probably not have picked it out in a book shop. And yet, reading the novel, I find it much more than chick-lit. It gives a delightful and witty insight into the London art world, and I found myself thinking of the main protagonist as a budding Tracy Emin. The author has great fun with the ways in which an artist may start to become known, particularly in London. I loved this story, found the characters engaging and entertaining, especially the flatmate Egg, and enjoyed the rom com element as well. Highly recommended for a fun read.

Read my full review on Book Bumblings

The biggest problem with this book is that it was told from the POV of someone so self-centered that the other characters might as well have not even been there. I'm used to not liking the main character of something (hi, Jenna is the worst character on MTV's Awkward.), but her selfishness made it so that she was pretty much the only character, so there was no balance between likeable and unlikeable characters. I just couldn't deal with that amount of selfishness, naivete, and flakiness.

I love Emily Benet's style of writing. This book follows Amber and her accidental foray into becoming an artist. The Banana Goddess. I can actually see somebody thinking the same way as Amber and following her actions.
Anyone who enjoys an easy to read story that's easy to pick up and put down will enjoy this book.
I have to say I preferred the old title of 'Spray Painted Bananas,' as it paints a clearer picture of what the story is about.
To sum up: A fun read. I'm looking forward to Emily's next book.
