Tales from the Tavern #3

Cauldrons, Charms and Chai

Rate this book
In the sleepy village of Wayside, where chai spices mingle with woodsmoke, the best cures are brewed with equal parts magic and friendship.

Vaskel came to Wayside seeking to shed his adventuring past and be with old friends. But as snow covers the rooftops and strange things begin happening to him, he realizes his old life isn't quite done with him. Afraid of how this could threaten his peaceful new life, he turns to Iris, the village apothecary, who isn't the least bit fearful of the Hellkin or his fiendish nature.

As they work together to unravel the mystery threatening Vaskel and soon the entire village, something even sweeter than chai begins to simmer between them, despite their heavily guarded hearts. When the truth emerges, will Vaskel and Iris realize that being truly seen and loved might be the most powerful magic of all?

Cauldrons, Charms & Chai is a wholesome, cozy fantasy brimming with holiday magic, gentle romance, found family, and mouthwatering baking. It features no kingdoms to save or epic battles, only gentle intrigue, enchanted creatures, the warmth of a tavern and village worth protecting, and the hope that love can bloom one cup of chai and whispered charm at a time.

I’ve been eagerly anticipating this instalment ever since finishing the second book in the series (Sorcery, Swords & Scones) and all but devouring festive novella Solstice, Spice and Everything nice back in December.

And having just finished, I’m so happy to report that it lived up to all my expectations as a heartfelt, and delightfully satisfying read that fans of cosy, low stakes fantasy and the found family trope are gonna absolutely adore.

We follow Tusk & Tail’s Hellkin bartender, Vaskell who (like the rest of Wayside) is in the midst of wedding prep for his friends Lira and Korl’s wedding.

When an old acquaintance (Marina) arrives, threatening to expose Vaskell’s past and ruin the new life he’s built (unless he rejoins his old one with her.)

Determined to protect his friends, Vaskell is resigned to his fate (and the strange curse Marina has inflicted on him.) Until village apothecary, Iris (who Vaskell has begun to develop feelings for) offers a way to solve his dilemma that might just allow him to stay in Wayside for good….

I really enjoyed this! The found family/ community vibes were so lovely and the glimmers of humour and adorableness thanks to resident flutterstoat Crumpet (who we got to see soo much more of) and his raccoon bestie, Bramble only added to the cosy, almost cottage core aesthetic.

But personally, it was Vaskell (whose story I’ve been most excited to delve into) and the journey he takes to overcome his own guilt, (by learning to trust not only in his friends but also in himself) that really stole my heart. And I genuinely need at least three more books with him and Iris as MCs, as their interactions were far too brief for my liking.

Overall, a warm fuzzy hug of a read that fans of Legends & Lattes or Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea should definitely consider checking out.

Also, thanks to the author for the e-arc.

Thank you so much to the author for the gifted eARC!

The time has come for Lira and Korl’s wedding, and it’s all anyone can talk about. Everyone is involved, everyone has opinions, and Lira is just trying to keep up with it all. Vaskel and the rest of their friends are doing their best to help her out. But when his past comes back to haunt him, he must decide if he wants to trust his new friends to help him, or risk losing what he has built here forever.

TL Stone knows how to write cozy fantasy. There’s always the perfect amount of sweet moments, heartwarming conversations, yummy baking, and low-stakes tension to keep you invested in the world while relaxing with the characters. And there are the cutest animal companions! I adore Crumpet the flutterstoat and loved seeing him steal the show whenever he was around.

I was very excited for Vaskel’s story going into this. He and Iris’ slowly developing relationship was so sweet to watch, and I enjoyed watching him learn to truly trust his new family with all of himself, even the past he wanted to keep buried. The family of Wayside goes through things together. No one is left to go through their challenges alone. So sit back, relax, and enjoy a warm cup of chai and a sweet treat while we follow another resident of Wayside find their happy ending.

The next story in Tales from the Tavern is out and not a moment too soon. I miss Wayside every time I’m away from it. T. L. Stone has made a cozy, yet lush, world in her stories. The newest novel is focused on Vaskel, a reformed hellkin. After Korl, Vaskel is my favorite character so I especially enjoyed seeing everything from his POV. But do not fret as Lira and Korl are back and are adorable as ever. There was just so much cozy sweetness wrapped up in here I felt like the Grinch when his heart grew three sizes. If you’re looking for a cozy fantasy to cuddle up and devour, look no further.

Thank you to the author, T.L. Stone, for the ARC!

4.5/5 stars rounded up.

This book revolves around Vaskel, a Hellkin with a dodgy past who has come to settle down and distance himself from said past. However, a mistake he made 20 years ago has come back into his life and it could risk his happiness and that of his friends in the village he now calls home.
Will he be able to make things right? Will his friends still accept him when they know more about his past?

Some of my favorite things about this book are the creative curses the characters used. They were so fun to read and there’s so many! It brought me joy every time I read one.
Additionally all the cozy baking, I need some of Pip’s and Lira’s confections (recipes for Lira’s are included in the book).

There’s good representation in the book; LGBTQ relationships as well as interracial relationships. And I don’t think age is specified for Iris, but, she seems like a more mature character than Lira or Sass and it’s always fun to see older main characters featured in cozy fantasy or romance novels.

Sass is my spirit animal and I need to go back and read her book (book two).

This is book three in a series, and while the books could technically be read on their own, I’d recommend reading books one and two before picking this up so you have a better understanding of the cast of characters within this book and their relationships with one another. I didn’t read the other books and I wish I had, only because I think it would make the stories about the couples in those books more special, because you’d see them unfold in their book rather than read scenes with them interacting as a couple already. I will definitely be going back and reading them because I really enjoyed this book and want to get to know the characters and this world better.

If you love cozy fantasy heavy on the found family with a bit of intrigue and low stakes, I think you’ll love this book!

Thank you to TL Stone for this eARC!

This cosy romantic novel by T L Stone.

Firstly, it’s an Advanced Reader Review, the story is that Vaskel, The Hellkin’s past comes back to haunt him, the storyline is the same as the overall plot of the previous novels, with some new characters appearing, updated plans on the wedding preparations for Lira and Word-building.

There’s no character building or world-building in this story as it’s just another based in Wayside.

Sadly, there wasn’t anything unique to this book, as the overall general storyline plot was.

1, A Characters past coming back to life and potentially ending in ruining the characters future happiness within Wayside.

2, A Character has developed feelings for another, but the damage to that character and friends could be used to harm, and character wouldn’t want that.

3, Wedding plans are ongoing, and everyone is involved in some way.

3, The history of this character is going to be used to harm wayside and their friendships potentially.

The End

Critically it lacks anything to make it unique, and jump out at me, but if it’s designed to follow a simple formals for a YA audience that has no interest whatsoever in the genre of fantasy, it has no slow burn to it, it lacked overall plot pace.

I’m very disappointed that this formula has what YA fiction has become, after reading for 45 years, it has no unique ability to make sense to draw readership, as it simply doesn’t change overall.

It has so many different elements that could have been used to create a more complex version and faster narratives. 2-3 stars are the absolute maximum I could give it.

This third book in the series by T. L. Stone is just as sweet and cosy as the first one.

I loved how you got more insight into village life at the beginning and how everyone had their role. It was lovely to see how all of them worked together to make Lira’s and Korl’s wedding something memorable and perfect for them—even though some of them might have gone overboard with it. I still liked it, though, as it shows that each of them cared for the couple and wanted them to be happy and have a wonderful wedding.

Vaskel was an interesting main character, as I didn’t know a lot about his past, and it was exciting to learn more about him, his former struggles, and how he deals with problems. I was really happy that his companion was Iris, as I could never have imagined that she would play a central role in any of the books. But it was clearly enriching, as I loved most scenes with her—especially that she didn’t fall for his lies and could see right through him (and that she didn’t fall for the hellkin’s charms too easily).

Crumpet is such a lovely creature, and it was wonderful having more scenes with him compared to the other books. Seeing him with his friend Bramble was so cute.

Even though the story was overall low-stakes and cosy, it was still intense for me what revolved around Marina and the soul bind she had put on Vaskel. I’m still not sure if it was worth all the hassle for the magical abilities he got, but his story was still interesting to follow along, especially as the characters are so loveable.

Things in Wayside should have calmed down after the Winter Solstice Festival… but of course, the village has other plans. While everyone is busy prepping for Lira and Korl’s wedding, Vaskel is trying to ignore some very strange things happening to him—and is definitely finding a lot of excuses to visit the local apothecary, Iris.
Vaskel came to Wayside hoping to put his adventuring past behind him. But now a mysterious magical threat is following him into this quiet, cozy life he's trying to build. With Iris at his side, he's got three days to face what’s haunting him and decide if he's ready to let his new friends—and maybe even Iris—see all of him, even the messy bits.
This book is technically the fourth installment in the Tales from the Tavern series (don’t forget the novella Solstice, Spice, and Everything Nice is available on TL Stone’s website!) and the vibes are as cozy as ever. This is one of my favorite fantasy villages full of found family, post-adventurers just trying to heal, bake, and vibe, and one of the BEST animal sidekicks of all time: Crumpet the flutterstoat. I’ve talked about Crumpet so much my spouse keeps asking me what happens next.
Cauldrons, Charms, and Chai is full of warm drinks, soft magic, quiet romance, and a whole lot of heart. It’s cozy fantasy at its finest.

3.5 stars (rounded up!)

Cauldrons, Charms & Chai is exactly what it promises to be: cozy, magical, romantic, soft, warm, and utterly charming; just like the recipes tucked lovingly into the back of the book. From the very first pages, it wraps you in the scent of chai spices and woodsmoke and invites you to slow down and breathe.

This story isn’t about saving kingdoms or fighting epic battles. It’s about gentle mysteries, found family, and two guarded hearts learning what it means to be truly seen. Vaskel and Iris are a delight together, and their romance simmers slowly and sweetly, like a well-brewed cup of chai. There’s magic here, but it’s the comforting kind, woven into everyday moments, shared meals, and quiet acts of care.

Perfect as a small escape from the harshness of everyday life, this book feels like curling up by a fire on a snowy evening. It’s wholesome without being dull, romantic without being spicy, and comforting without losing its sense of wonder. If you’re looking for a gentle adventure full of warmth, kindness, and charm, Cauldrons, Charms & Chai is a lovely place to spend your time. 💛☕️

Thank you to the author for an advanced copy, all opinions are my own.

✨✨ARC REVIEW✨✨

TL Stone writes the best cozy fantasies I swear! This is the third book in the Tales from the Tavern series, yoh do have to read the others before this one but they’re WORTH IT!
It’s finally time for Korl and Lira’s wedding 🥹🥹 Every Ody is getting involved and trying to help make it the most perfect day possible!
This isn’t all about the wedding it is also Vaskal’s story. When Vaskal’s past comes back to haunt him he needs to learn how to trust his new and old friends and figure out how to let them in and ask for help when he needs it.
This was such a fun book and o truly loved diving back into this series! I also love how the author adds recipes her characters make in the back of the book! This book releases tomorrow and is perfect if you love Legends and Lattes and want another cozy fantasy to enjoy!

“You can’t take back the steps you walked, but you can always start a new path forward.”

Cauldrons, Charms, & Chai is book three of the Tales from the Tavern series (there’s a novella, though, too!) and I enjoyed it so much. Thank you, T. L., for the eARC and the opportunity to be in your Cozy Crew!

I was so happy to be back in Wayside, immersed in Stone’s cozy world. This book tells the hellkin Vaskel’s story, which I was so interested in after meeting him earlier in the series. He seemed like such a unique character, and Stone wrote his tale so well. The slow burn between Vaskel and town apothecary Iris had me wanting more and more. And Vaskel’s past coming to haunt him? I loved the mystery and tension in it! And, of course, Stone included some delicious sounding recipes at the end of the book - hopefully I’ll get around to trying them soon!

We are back in the quaint village of Wayside and things are getting busy as Lira and Korl are getting ready for their wedding. From cake baking to steel arch designing - everyone is getting ready and helping out in their own ways.

But something from Vaskel's past has returned to collect on an old bargain and things become very complicated as he is faced with only three days to solve the conundrum or be forced to leave the cozy life hes built for himself.

These books are so dang cozy. Even when theres danger and adventure (which this one had more of than the previous installments) the cozy vibes are there. Theres something romance and of course more found family (my favorite part of these!!). The epilogue was PERFECT and I am SO ready for the next book.

A huge thank you to the author for sending an ARC my way.

Adore the Tales from the Tavern series by TL Stone so much! Book three Cauldrons Charms and Chai was excellent! Cozy magical plot with all my favorite characters and some new ones! Love that the conflict in this book is about wanting to stay with found family and the warm feeling of home rather than leave and be forced to do morally unaligned activities. Also loved the theme of our hero learning the importance of asking for help from friends. Sometimes we think we’re protecting those we love by keeping our troubles secret from them but in the end it takes the whole team working together to have the best outcome 💗

Have you ever done something reckless that you later regretted? Welcome to Vaskel's world. How will the Hellkin deal with something he did when he was young? How will the rest of the village accept it, or will he even let them know?

This third book in the Tales of the Tavern series explores mistakes and second chances. The character growth that comes from it is wonderful, not just with Vaskel but with the rest of the regulars (and even some new faces we might see again in the future). Add in the slow-burn romance, and this book is a winner.

This is another cute and cozy tail from wayside 🥰 the story is adorable and I like the extra characters that have come through. It had me sipping chair and feeling snug like always!
The romance was a bit lacking in chemistry but the story wasn’t focused on it so it didn’t subtract from the overall vibes.

I recommend reading 1&2 before reading this important to get the back story and lore or some things will be confusing/seem unexplained.

Received this as an advanced copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.

Cauldrons, Charms & Chai is what it promises to be: cozy, magical, romantic and utterly charming; just like the recipes at the back of the book. From the very first few pages, it wraps you in the scent of chai spices and woodsmoke and invites you to slow down and just relax.
I have loved the characters crumpet is especially a firm favourite. This is the ideal book/series to curl up on the sofa with a cup of hot chocolate on a rainy afternoon and relax with the tales from the tavern.

The book felt like a big hug. I love all the characters. It was great to see Vaskal’s story, his past. This low-stakes series is always adventurous with a HEA.

This book as well as the others in the series gives readers the optimism of second chances, found family, friendship and forgiveness. The characters are well developed and there is sarcasm that will make readers laugh.

I highly recommend this as well as the entire series.

I absolutely loved this book. It was the perfect continuation of this cozy romantasy series. In Cauldrons, Charms, and Chai, the story focuses on Vaskel as he struggles with someone from his past shows up to make good on a deal made in his youth while sorting through his feelings for a certain resident of Wayside.

This story is full of witty banter that had me laughing. As with the two previous books, the main characters learn what it meams to have a found family that will do anything for you. T.L. Stone has created a fantasy story and series that has all the romantasy elements a reader desires without any spicy. This book is perfect for any reader who wants a cozy romantic fantasy set in a charming little village.
