Where the Bodies Are Berried

Rate this book
When a wealthy local benefactor is slain on the farm, Monica has to figure out who wanted to cash in on the killing . . .

As Sassamanash Farms hunkers down for the long winter, Monica agrees to let the local animal shelter host their Christmas-themed fundraiser there. The draw of the event—a chance to have your pet’s picture taken with Santa—brings in animal lovers from far and wide. But when the crackling fire dies down and the festive holiday props are all carted away, Monica discovers a very un-jolly sight next to the barn—the dead body of one of the shelter’s biggest donors. With the farm’s good name in jeopardy, Monica goes to work to root out the killer.

By all accounts the victim was a charming and generous supporter of the shelter, but Monica discovers that he was loathed by those who knew him for being tight-fisted and unscrupulous. Suspecting money might be the motive, she turns her sights on his stylish wife and her lavish lifestyle, along with the manager of the struggling shelter, who stood to collect a hefty bequest from his will. But as Monica closes in on one final clue, the culprit closes in on her. Caught unawares, she’ll have to survive the brutal winter weather, as well as a cold-blooded killer . . .

Another fantastic addition to the Cranberry Cove mystery series. Monica is one of my favorite cozy protagonists, and the characters have grown on me so much that I feel as if they're my personal friends. The mystery was intriguing, packed with clever clues and slippery red herrings that kept me guessing until the final reveal. This series has landed in my top five faves, so I hope many more installments will follow.

"Where the Bodies are Berried (A Cranberry Cove Mystery book 10)" by Peg Cochran has Cranberry Cove full in Christmas season. It starts with a Pet Photos with Santa event. It ends with Monica being very lucky despite some really stupid choices.

At the Pet Photos with Santa event, a local high ranking man is found dead. An employee of Monica's husband goes missing and there are several people who want the man gone in attendance. All the little red herring stories get a bit of a wrap up but there seems to be more than what can be flushed out clearly. Except the actual culprit's story.

Where The Bodies Are Berried by Peg Cochran takes us back to Michigan and Sassmanash Farms where Monica runs the bakery and does the bookkeeping. She keeps the farm store supplied with delicious cranberry treats as well as various local businesses. They have hosted a fundraiser for a local animal shelter, pet photos with Santa, and now are cleaning up when Monica comes across a dead body buried in the snow. The killer had probably hoped it wouldn’t be found until Spring. Monica has promised not to put herself in danger, especially important since she and Greg were now parents, but she can’t resist asking questions. Every little tidbit helps and the local detective, a nice lady named Stephens, begs her not to put herself in danger, but appreciates her help. She is an excellent researcher.

How Monica manages to squeeze it all into a day makes a normal person’s head spin. She has a great husband, and her mom helps a lot, too. They have an excellent babysitter: an ex-nurse. It is a small town so racing around doesn’t take too much time. Of course, the winter weather is making racing a bit more difficult. She has her suspects in the murder and they are not the same as those of the police. In fact, the police have arrested someone, but Monica is not convinced and keeps asking questions. Of course, this puts her in danger. Of course, she squirms out of it. A very entertaining book encompassing an entire community in its story.

I was first drawn to this book by its charming, wintry cover—it perfectly captures the small-town holiday spirit that runs through the story.
In Where the Bodies Are Berried, Monica finds herself caught up in a local murder investigation in the picturesque town of Cranberry Cove, Michigan. What begins as a peaceful holiday season quickly turns tense when a well-known local man is found dead under suspicious circumstances. Between running her cranberry-based baking business and navigating community gossip, Monica can’t help but get involved, piecing together clues while juggling her personal life and the town’s festive events.

Peg Cochran delivers a mystery that feels both comforting and engaging, filled with believable characters, crisp dialogue, and just the right amount of humor. The small-town setting, laced with snow, friendship, and a touch of danger, creates an inviting backdrop that keeps you turning the pages. Monica remains a warm, relatable heroine—curious, steady, and kind—and it’s easy to root for her as she uncovers the truth.

Fast-paced yet cozy, Where the Bodies Are Berried is a delightful seasonal mystery that offers charm, suspense, and heart in equal measure. A perfect choice for readers who enjoy culinary cozies and holiday whodunits alike. Though this is part of a series there is no issue to read it as a standalone.

Thanks to NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for the opportunity to read this cozy and festive mystery ARC . This is my honest review .

This is a properly cozy and festive murder mystery with all the right ingredients - small town life, lots of intertwined lives of locals, and of course lots of food in the mix. Honestly there are far less appealing weekend reads as the nights get darker and colder.

Our main character Monica finds the body of a wealthy local man following a fundraiser she helped to host at the family farm. She gets pulled into the murder investigation and uncovers a surprising thing - the victim wasn't as well thought of as she thought. Through the local network and the gool old fashioned 'going on a hunch' method, she finds herself dangerously close to the killer.

There's loads to lose yourself in here and plenty to give you the warm cozy vibes. Firstly the world-building is just lovely, you can really picture the small town the book is set in and all of its characters and businesses. I enjoyed feeling like I was getting to know a community even though I was coming very late into the series. Also there are some great elements which are unusual in this particular genre - firstly the lead Detective was female which is rare, none of the main characters worked in law enforcement, VERY unusually the most obvious suspects aren't the guilty party (or indeed investigated much) and the close (and often quirky!) connections you find in a small town were really well represented. It's completely possible for the reader to work out who the killer is and get that little rush of satisfaction at being proved right.

Main issues for me were mostly that both the killer and Monica are...well frankly a bit stupid when we get to the closing chapters of a book. I have a problem with main characters who run knowingly into danger for no good reason, and Monica really does. I also didn't love just how clear it was who the killer was - I do like just a little bit more suspense before the final reveal. There are a few little side lines which don't really add to the story and don't further it - and they lead to the feeling that most of what Monica does throughout the book is run from one place to another talking to people. Also...and as a childless person I am happy to be told I'm wrong...her son, Teddy, is meant to be 3 months old, but he seems to spend most of his time being cared for by anyone but his parents, and really doesn't feel like the tiny baby he is meant to be.

That aside however, if you're looking for something which isn't heavy, will give you a warm feeling on wintry nights and is generally a pretty feel-good book; give this a go - it's good fun.

- Thanks to Netgalley for granting me this ARC in exchange for an honest review -

Love the Christmas-y cover. It's Christmas at Sassamanash Farms and Monica is busy hosting the local animal shelter's fund raiser. Since having one's picture taken with your pet and Santa is a staple around here, I was surprised to discover it apparently isn't that widely used. There are even some live reindeer on hand. Yep, things are beginning to look a lot like Christmas....wait, I've heard that line somewhere. Grin. In any case, all is going well until, in an effort to recapture a piece of money blowing away in the wind, Monica almost stumbles over a dead body in a snow drift. Uh, oh, he's one of the shelter's biggest donors. Is there a connection?

I won't detail the plot, but will say that as mother to a month old, Teddy, Monica already has her hands full. That doesn't stop her from sleuthing, of course. There were quite a few characters coming and going, some quirky and memorable, others seemingly just passing through. I put it on myself that I had a tough time sorting them out and, as a result, found the plot rather slow. Monica also isn't the best at seeking information via otherwise informal conversations, either, even managing to further distress the victim's wife early on. In front of friends, no less. I liked her relationship with husband and shop owner Greg but found myself not really caring what happened to her despite curiosity over the usual whodunit. The side stories were intriguing and did add to the story, some of those characters showing promise for future installments.

So, bottom line, while I wasn't loving it, 3.5 rounded to 4 stars, I wasn't pulled into the story, either. As noted, I'll lay some of that blame on myself and feel many will fully enjoy this one. You will learn a bit about cranberry salsa, btw, and farm life on a cranberry farm in general. Toss in little touches like needing to set up the monitor in baby Teddy's room while speaking to visitors and there is a homey feeling to the story. As for whodunit, I didn't really know until the end, so figuring that out was fun, even if the logic behind it was rather saddening. Past events do have a way of haunting our lives today. Thanks #BeyondThePage for the early visit to Cranberry Cove. Despite not quite being lured in fully this go-round, it's a place I'll happily revisit.

Book Review:

I just love this series. I gave it 4 stars.

In this book it is close to Christmas, and everyone is scrambling. The farm is doing well and growing. The farm has opened to help the animal shelter earn some needed money by having a Santa available so the people can bring their pets have pictures taken and the money will go to the shelter. It ends up being a big success except Monica ends up finding a body.

The body belongs to a wealthy man who was a big supporter of the shelter. He did have his downside and not too many people liked him. Out of those who hated him who actually killed him. You will have to read the book.

What I really enjoyed in this book of course is the family and friends and how they look out for each other. Monica is always worried about them and of course they are worried about her. They actually don't like it when she starts investigating. Monica just can't seem to stop because her brain won't allow her to. She wants to know why and won't stop even though she knows she should.

This was a perfectly fine story that didn't break the mould or offer anything unexpected but worked well within the cosy murder mystery genre.

There is a lot to like here - neither are connected to law enforcement, which is a lovely change of pace in these types of books. Her husband is a wonderful man, always ready to just be a father without any issue. The fact the main detective was female, was also a refreshing change, and the world building as a whole was great. The village felt like a real, breathing place. Albeit one with an unhealthy obsession with cranberries - but then it is their main export so perhaps its to be expected.

The characters are fun as ever, just don't think too hard on them. Enjoy their stories, enjoy the pun store names - Book 'Em is a special treat, I wish more stores in the real world had fun little names like the ones in these stories.

The mystery was fair, there were enough clues that you could figure it out without feeling cheated which was fun.

My biggest issue with the book was the ending, the killer was really dumb in their actions, no spoilers but their behaviour in the last couple of chapters made minus sense because the thing had already happened. It was peril for the sake of peril and so fell a little flat because of that.

Also Teddy was not treated as if he was a three month old, I wish you could be that put together, back at work full time, able to juggle everything so perfectly at only three months. But then this is fiction.

If you want to turn your brain off for awhile, go for it.

This book is part of a series, which I should have known but didn’t pay attention to. And it felt like it. Character moments would just appear - the main character has a baby but doesn’t talk about it hardly ever and is rarely taking care of it. But she does spend a lot of time on dinner.

Despite the super clever title that made me borrow it, this book is very basic, bland, and vanilla with little mystery as the killer is pretty obvious early on. The characters spent an inordinate amount of time discussing a slogan for their bakery, and they land on: Oven fresh every day. Wow.

The main character is very blunt and abrupt with no decorum or ability to sneak in questions. She will directly ask you if you killed someone, and the characters will answer honestly. She asks a journalist the name of an anonymous source, and he just gives it no problem.

This has a positive side: the book is quick and short. There is no bumbling about (except to emphasize the cozy winter weather and food), and things get wrapped up pretty quickly. I can see the appeal of just shutting off and reading for the sake of reading.

Overall the cast is not very diverse, and the characters aren’t very deep, and the mystery isn’t very mysterious. But I did choose to keep reading, and I somehow don’t regret it.

This is book # 10 in this series, and it is delightful!

Sometimes it takes a while to get into a mystery book, but not this one...I felt right at home back in Cranberry Cove, and it was nice to reconnect with Monica and the cast of characters that I knew and loved from the previous books in this series.

Since the book takes place before Christmas, the weather was freezing, and driving was extremely hazardous...I don't do winters, and some of the descriptions brought too many memories of similar dangerous situations I had to endure years ago when I lived in the Midwest.

The plot was ingenious, and reading went very fast. Foodies rejoice...there is a plethora of detailed descriptions of scrumptious dishes that everybody was frequently enjoying.

When Monica discovered whodunnit, I knew right away also. The reveal of the murderer was very gripping, and very well done!

I highly recommend this book and the series Cranberry Cove Mysteries, but it will help if you start reading from the beginning of the series with "Berried Secrets"

Thank you, Net Galley and Beyond The Page Publishers for allowing me to read an advance copy and post a personal review. Thank you also to Ms. Peg Cochran for writing this cozy mystery series!

I normally rate this series higher, but I had a hard time with Monica's disregard for her loved ones. Monica has a new baby at home - Teddy. He sounds adorable.
Monica has a wonderful husband, Greg.
Her investigation and the fact that she won't stop are disrespectful to Greg and dangerous for her baby boy.
I've read other mysteries where the main character has young children, not usually babies. I didn't react as negatively to those cases as I did to this one. Teddy is only a couple of months old.
I didn't feel like there was enough personal motivation behind why Monica investigated. It was put up to her curiosity.
I'll put it out there that I guess I did get emotionally involved with the characters because I was furious with Monica for endangering her life and blowing off the concern of others about her decision to investigate.
Aside from that reaction, the mystery was a good one. There were good suspects. I guess I wish Monica hadn't gone off on her own so much. I think she could have involved the detective more.
The mystery was good, but I disagreed with the actions of the main character. I can't give it more than 3 stars.

A wealthy local donor to an animal shelter is found dead at the cranberry farm after a fundraiser. Turns out there are plenty of people who hate him so there are plenty of suspects, many of whom just happened to be at the fundraiser. Monica is determined to find out who.

Of course there is festive feelings in the air. Monica is besotted with her new baby and can't wait to celebrate their first Christmas as a family with her husband. I enjoy the fact that Monica is kind of awkward interviewing suspects and people don't like being questioned by her. For once Monica actually goes to the police to with her suspicions and tries not to do stupid things that get her in danger as she has in other books. But she isn't totally successful.

I always love to return to Cranberry Cove for the latest mystery. I have been reading this series from the beginning and have become very attached to the characters and their relationships with each other. Of course, there are plenty of quirky people, a good cozy just has to have them.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

I like this series. I realize the formula for cozies requires the heroine to be in danger from which she, through pluck or intervention, must extricate herself. However, when the heroine, Monica in this case, steps over the line and becomes a candidate for The Darwin Award, I get very frustrated. It is not like the clues were hidden. I had the killer pegged early on but once she thought she had solved the mystery and she had an open channel for dialogue with the detective, she still “poked the bear”. Not once but multiple times. When the killer makes a move on her, and she recognizes her peril, she finally thinks about her baby and her husband and all the things that should have convinced her to back off and let the police do their jobs.

The dangerous situation was exciting and the resolution of it almost made up for her previous actions. There are so many other things that I enjoyed about the book too. I realize that it is a delicate balance that the authors must juggle. I doubt I could do it. But it depletes the enjoyment when bravery turns to stupidity. Four purrs and no paws up.

Where the Bodies are Berried by Peg Cochran is a lighthearted cozy mystery. We get to catch up with Monica, Greg, Jeff, little Teddy, and the rest of the gang. The narrative documents Monica's daily routine with comprehensive detail. Each meal prepared and consumed by Gregy and Monica is thoroughly described. The main mystery was straightforward. Monica asks questions while friends and family tell her that she should let the police handle it. I like Detective Stevens who is friendly and helpful. She listens to Monica (takes her seriously). The whodunit can be solved before the reveal (limited number of suspects). There is a chilling reveal. A second mystery involves Greg’s shop assistant, Wilma. I thought this mystery was inane. They contact Detective Stevens to report her disappearance but fail to reveal an important detail. This book, like the others in the series, I should accept things as they are without overthinking the inconsistencies (hard for me to do). Where the Bodies are Berried is the tenth A Cranberry Cove Mystery and it can be read as a standalone. Where the Bodies are Berried is a cranberry farm cozy with a bouncing baby boy, pet photos, a cranberry salsa contract, a slain sponsor, a missing assistant, wintry weather, and a joyful family.

Where the Bodies Are Berried is book #10 in the Cranberry Cove Mystery series by Peg Cochran. As a SW Michigan retired educator, I enjoy the setting of this Cranberry Farm, the characters and the twist and turn plot.

Normally I rate this series higher, but as a retired (2012) Michigan teacher with grandchildren in 2 different Michigan schools systems I could not read past Chapter 8. Starting in 2000 after the Columbine, Ohio school shooting school doors were locked and schools have cameras. After Sandy Hook school shooting in December 2012, nobody can enter a school in Michigan. Schools upgraded their security measures even more with multiple series of locked doors and cameras. For the last two decades, one is buzzed into the building - then again into the main office. Double, sometimes triple locked doors. Students no longer have early entry access. Therefore Monica could not walk into the school. She would have had to state her reason outside. Plus most schools no longer have old yearbooks. My Michigan community has some at the local library.

As a retired high school English, Creative Writing, and Journalism teacher, fact checking is very important to make a story believable.

Where the Bodies are Berried is part of the Cranberry Cove Mystery series. It’s Christmas time in Cranberry Cove and the local animal shelter is hosting its fundraiser at Sassamanash Farms. When Monica discovers the body of the shelters biggest donor she’s determined to solve the mystery behind the death to clear up the Farms good name. Putting her sleuthing cap on Monica searches out the killer, but will she get to the answer too late?

I’ve enjoyed this series since I first started reading it, but it grows on me even more with each new mystery I read. I was pulled into this mystery from the beginning and hooked as the mystery twisted and turned. There is a great cast of characters in this series and I love getting to visit them with each new mystery. This was an easy read and the perfect holiday cozy mystery read. If you are looking for a good series with strong characters and twisting storylines this is a good book to check out.

This is book 10 in the series however I dont feel that it messed with the story at all and this could be read as a stand alone.

Monica runs the kitchen at the Sassamanash Farm making all sorts of cranberry goodies. This is set in winter around chrsitmas but its more heavy on the weather than the holiday so it could be read anytime. Someone gets murdered at a charity event and it seems as if almost everyone could have done it. And im not going to lie, it seems like Moncia does more sluething than actual work sometimes.

I really enjoyed the motherhood dynamic and her worries of balancing time with her child and work. I also enjoyed how her husband runs a bookstore. This felt like a very fast paced cozy mystery and the towards the end had my heart pumping trying to see what was going to happen next.

When a major donor to the local animal shelter is found murdered at the farm after a fundraising event, Monica finds her stuff yet again putting on her sleuthing hat. Even with a new baby at home, she just can’t help herself. Especially since the murder happens at the farm. But will Monica be celebrating the baby‘s first Christmas, or will the family be morning her loss this time?

This has been a great series. I love that the story also progresses Monica’s life and those of the supporting characters as well. I come for the cozy mystery mystery but I also enjoy catching up with what it feels like friends. After this one, though, I’m really craving cranberries, but usually happens after I read one of these books, but the candied cranberries? Yeah I’m jonesing for some along with the next book in the series.

Monica works on her brother's farm, along with her mother and friends baking goods daily using the cranberries her brother harvests on the farm. The local animal shelter used the farm as a venue to raise funds for the shelter by setting up pictures with Santa on the farm for people's pets. Monica happens to stumble across the dead body of a local, high powered business owner who is a generous donator to the shelter. The man is known to be nasty and ruthless when it comes to business and there are plenty of people who would want him dead, including his ex wife and current wife. Monica puts herself in harms way and almost becomes a victim herself when she starts looking into the case. This is a good, cozy mystery. This is the first book I have read in the series, now I have to go back and read the rest so I know how Monica came to this place in life with her husband and new baby!

Monica is hosting a fundraiser for the local animal shelter. Visitors to the farm can have their pictures taken with their pet and Santa for a donation. They can also enjoy the ambiance of the cranberry farm in Michigan. All if going so well and a local successful businessman is donating to the charity. Later in the day, when the snow has begun to fall, Monica discovers the body of the businessman covered in snow outside a barn. The authorities arrive and it snow very clear that four or five people may have had a motive for murder. Monica begins to sleuth at the bequest of several people. Like the Dutch names in the novel which are akin to the Michigan area and the continued development of this family. Thanks to NetGalley for the arc.

Monica agrees to host a fundraiser for the local animal shelter and ends up finding their biggest donor dead at the end of the night. Since the death happened on her family's farm she decides to investigate.
This is the first book I've read in this series and I liked the book. The characters seem like a nice group to hang with and I like the small town atmosphere. It was a quick read and I was able to figure out who the murderer was before it was officially revealed. I was surprised at some of the decisions Monica made knowing she has a three month old at home. I will definitely be adding the previous books in the series to my to be read list.

Where the Bodies Are Berried by Peg Cochran

I really enjoyed this cozy mystery and meeting the characters in this story.
Monica agrees to host a fundraiser for the local animal shelter run by her friend Chelsa. It will feature having photos taken with your pet and Santa. All goes well until Monica discovers the body of George Winslow in the snow. Monica who has gotten involved with cases before does some of her own investigating to track down the killer.
There are a lot of twists and turns in this book, and it keeps you guessing. This is an ongoing series, but this book does not spoil the other books.
I am looking forward to reading the previous books in the series.

I enjoyed each book in this series. The author has done a great job of evolving the character from a single woman to married woman with a child. And, it is all done in a very realistic way. Monica and her husband live a very normal life – money worries, balancing home and family etc. I really love that about this series. The clues were provided and obvious but Monica didn’t put two and two together though the author wanted the reader to be able to do that. It was fun being a step ahead of Monica and it didn’t take away the suspense of the ending. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for review.

This series makes me smile and I was very happy to have received my digital copy from the library so quickly.

Monica is settling into motherhood and excited for the Christmas season. As she is cleaning up from a fundraiser at the cranberry farm she stumbles upon a dead body. She just can’t help herself from investigating. Monica may find herself as cold as the fishes if she isn’t careful.

A delightfully quick read and the perfect book to end my reading year. My only complaint as always is I want recipes of all the deliciousness discussed. I’m a fan of cranberry and love to find new recipes.

I received a free, advance copy of this book and this is my unbiased and voluntary review.

It is the annual pet shelter fund raisin g including taking cute animal pictures. But discovery during the picture turns a supposedly fun event turns to tragedy. Once again Cranberry Cove will be a hot spot for crime. This is a story you do not want to miss.

Ms. Cochran penned an intriguing tale about a cranberry farm and it's place in a rural community. Monica aids her brother in running the farm, getting him into the black, but unfortunately has the misfortune of finding bodies as she goes about her business. It's a tale of family, friends, community and intrigue. I recommend not only the book but the whole series.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Peg Cochran for providing me with a complimentary digital Where the Bodies Are Berried. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I’m obsessed with cozy mysteries. This is the first book I’ve read by this author. I need to read the other books in the series. It was short, but I really enjoyed it. The characters are fun. I would read other books by this author!

I really enjoy the “Cranberry Cove Mysteries”. I love that the setting is in my home state of Michigan. The characters are very likable. I hope Peg Cochran continues the series!!
