Four friends made a promise to live one night like it was their last. That night changed everything.
Ten years ago, Mila Ferguson left behind a devastating fire, a stolen kiss, and a shattered circle of friends in her hometown of Hart’s Landing. But when a crisis brings her back, Mila just wants to get in and get out, unscathed by her mother’s constant criticism and unseen by her former crush, Everett McKean.
Only...Everett is everywhere. The town’s attractive, beloved mayor has resisted settling down, but he’s never stopped wondering about Mila. Having her back in Hart’s Landing is the second chance he didn’t know he was waiting for--and he’s not about to waste it.
As Mila slowly opens her heart to Everett and begins to rebuild her fractured friendships, she wonders if coming home was exactly what she needed. But old wounds threaten to open again when questions emerge about what really happened the night Mila left. Who’s really responsible for the fire that destroyed the bakery? And will knowing the truth free Mila from the past, or ignite a blaze that burns down the future she’s trying to build?
People say you can never truly come home again, but sometimes coming home isn’t about where you’ve been. It’s about who you’re brave enough to become.
Sexy, heartfelt, and steeped in small-town charm, Hart’s Landing is a story of forgiveness, friendship, and finding the family who loves you no matter how far you wander.
USA Today bestselling author of sweet and sexy romance. Lover of cocktails, high heels, and history with the naughty bits left in. Michigan girl. INTJ. Always seeking ginspiration...
“He kisses me, and it’s sweet and romantic. It’s hopes and dreams and promises.”
As a people pleaser who carried a tremendous weight of guilt over That Night of unfortunate events a decade ago, 28yo Mila Ferguson's emotions were so very relatable. 🥺 Her desire for unconditional love, her sadness over the loss of her friendships, there was never anything dishonest about her feelings, which I liked, even when it came to rekindling the flames she felt for one of her best friend's older brother, Mayor of Hart's Landing Everett McKean, the thirty-year-old cherry farmer farmer, a college dropout with zero political experience, but who never truly forgot about her. 🍒
Everett was a dish - served to perfection. He was exactly what Mila needed - the sexy friend with benefits, the kind shoulder to lean on, the joy and comfort. He was so understanding of Mila's insecurities, doubts of her own talent as a freelance botanical illustrator, that he had me smitten on sight. Where can I find my own Everett, who loves and trusts so wholeheartedly? 😭 Who falls first, but never pushes and just gives you the space to breathe, without asking for anything in return, except are you okay? 🫠
“I want to respect you and ruin you at the same time.”
Since Mila charmed Everett by tying her cherry so very sexily, he saw only her. And their romance unfolded in a very sweet and earnest and wanting way. 💕💕 Like coming home to a love that had always been yours, but circumstances kept them apart. It was believable and affectionate and genuine, with sincerity and desire . Surely no two people have ever fit together so exquisitely. Everett was determined to show Mila that she was so very worthy of being loved - that he treated her so gently, but with such open longing. 🥰
The door is also wide open here, folks. Heat and greed. Hunger and demand whenever and wherever else these two can get their hands on each other. ❤️🔥❤️🔥 Y'know, making up for lost and stolen time. Everett was a man as good as he gave; Mila certainly had nothing to complain about. 🫦 And for all that she feels so inadequate about herself, he was the perfect man to show her how perfect she truly is. 🥹
“You’ve always been my missing piece, Freckles.”
The writing was refreshing, portraying Mila's six weeks taking care of her mother well-spent, in also helping both of them overcome their personal hurdles and face challenges and growth in a positive light. It was not quite repetitive, but at one point I did take a break, because I was feeling stressed and annoyed about a few things that dampened my overall appreciation. 😕 It's pretty cover was definitely what drew me to it; so I'm totally unfamiliar with the author's previous works.
I thought this would be a stand-alone; but the way the supporting cast was being portrayed, with certain hints suggesting that there was potential for future relationships to be explored, I found my attention distracted by those various interactions. 😮💨 I know, life is more than just the romance of two, but I would have liked it if there had been no possibility otherwise.
Maybe I'm reaching, or maybe this is how the author rolls with potential series introduced, but I just was not interested. 🤷🏻♀️ Also, as quirky as it was that captured the wholesome small town vibes of familiarity and camaraderie, I really wasn't a fan of the Landing Pad, interactive gossip chat group ie news gazette, that kept the community updated with all the latest gossip and news.
“For God’s sake, I was giving you a compliment, Mila. But I guess I can’t do anything right.”
Mila's mom, Eliza, really took an emotional toll on the story. Her self-deprecating comments directed towards Mila really were hurtful and painful, especially since she really showed no sign of ever changing her tune concerning her daughter, constantly playing the guilt trip to sway Mila's own choices. 😢 And aside from the many truths revealed concerning that fateful night ten years ago, Mila's breakthrough with her mother's own domineering control, if not failed expectations, was certainly a much-deserved highlight for me. 👌🏻
I cheered and agreed with how she braved each storm - through the tears and rejection - as a woman who finally found a heart and place with that someone could actually love me for me, who appreciated her with all his heart. 🫂 I know it's a long haul for the hurt to entirely go away, but the new beginnings and reformed friendships she found upon her return made up for the wounds that would slowly but surely heal. ❤️🩹❤️🩹
*Thank you to Edelweiss for a DRC in exchange for an honest review.
3.5/5 ⭐️ the beginning was very promising, but by the 60% mark, it felt like pulling teeth 😬 there was just nothing to hold onto. the romance had kind of progressed as far as it could’ve, the mystery fell flat, and the issues with her mom got really repetitive. unfortunately I think my least fave from melanie… ever 🫨
This book was everything!! I absolutely loved the romance, the emotional depth, and the added mystery in this one. Such an amazing book & the added spice was perfect!! I was swooning so hard over Everett & Mila’s chemistry!! These two were undeniable, but Mila’s guarded personality had her feeling so much! The friendships and character development was just such a great aspect in this story! I loved the chaotic & meddling town of Hart’s Landing & I really hope we see more from these characters!!
Hart’s Landing is a second chance, best friend’s brother, small town romance with a dash of mystery! You will absolutely swoon head first for the MMC & root for the FMC to love herself enough to fight for the things she deserves. The banter and Landing Pad posts had me unexpectedly laughing out loud; I swear the small town gossip chaos was just too funny. This is the first in series, and I think it sets up the next books nicely to follow the rest of Mila’s friend group.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 Quantity of spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ Quality of spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ *There are eight spicy scenes in Hart’s Landing. I’ve included the pages/chapters at the bottom of this review. Please note that these are based on the ARC version.*
Hart’s Landing follows Mila and Everett. Mila had the biggest crush on her best friend, Gabi’s, brother and after one of their friend group passes away at 18 from Leukemia, they all agree to have one night of risks. To live like there is no tomorrow. Mila’s task is to kiss Everett. After closing up the bakery where she works (and Everett’s family owns), he stops by to make a delivery. She finally has the opportunity to kiss him, but immediately after, the bakery explodes. Since the entire town blames her for the explosion, she leaves and moves to New York.
Fast forward ten years, Mila’s mom needs her to come home to take care of her after a hip replacement surgery. Reluctantly, Mila agrees. She doesn’t hate Hart’s Landing but still feels guilt for the fire AND has a very tenuous relationship with her mother. Her mom is the definition of narcissistic and whewwww was her dialogue frustrating. Dealing first hand with a narcissistic parent, I can 100% say her portrayal was so accurate!
Upon Mila’s return, she very quickly runs into Everett and starts catching up with him. He’s thought of her over the years and always had this “what if” feeling had that kiss night not ended with a bang. Their relationship progresses quickly but it didn’t feel rushed. Everett’s thoughtfulness and protectiveness was perfection. Mila had a lot of mental and emotional baggage and he really helped her work through it, alongside her therapist.
There was honestly more spice than I was anticipating in this book, but I’m not mad at it! I love when a cover deceives you! My only complaint spice wise is that there was a scene that happened immediately after them playing with baby goats & Everett does not wash his hands in between.. this is a me thing & my OCD was triggered 😜 Other than that, great spicy scenes!
I’m excited to continue with the rest of this series and see where all the best friend’s stories go! Thank you so much for the gifted ARC, Entangled! 💕
I ABSOLUTELY loved Hart's Landing! I was hooked from the beginning and didn't want to put it down! It was definitely a book that made me want to forget all about my adult responsibilities and just read!
Tropes: 🩷Best Friend’s Brother 💙Rebuilding Found Family 🩷What Could Have Been 💙He Falls First 🩷Return to Small Town
After a night that went horribly wrong Mila fled Hart's Landing and told herself she would never go back. But when her mom needs her help recovering from surgery she finally makes the trip home ten years after the night that changed everything.
Everett had always been Mila's crush, and even though she was his younger sister's best friend, he had always thought there could maybe be something more between them. So when Mila fled town without ever looking back Everett always wondered what could have been.
Upon Mila's return, Everett thinks he and Mila might finally get their chance. He knows she feels it too, despite the walls she has put up to protect herself. So slowly but surly he works at breaking down those walls until she realizes that she is worth loving just as she is. By being supportive he helps her find her voice and gives her the courage to mend fractured friendships.
OMG....Everett and his golden retriever self are SO SWOON WORTHY! I absolutely LOVED HIM. I loved that Mila finally found herself and realized her self worth.
Hart's Landing had it all! Cozy small town vibes, friendship, tension, angst, banter, instant chemistry, and when he falls first...it gets me every time!!
Lets not forget "The Landing Pad" updates...they had me cracking up!
This was my first Melanie Harlow book, but I instantly became a fan! I can't wait to read more and am so excited/impatiently waiting to continue this series!!
Thank you Melanie Harlow and Entangled Publishing for this eARC 🫶
Yay we have another Melanie book! I was so excited to start this and it did not disappoint. I will say it again, I love Melanie’s male characters, there’s always something about them and how sweet and honest they are. Everett is the best as he is just so caring and loyal. He’s the counselor for all of the town!! :) Mila had the worst mother, I just felt so bad how much of a narcissist she was. Nothing was never enough for her. Mila had some issues, but having Everett by her side helped a lot. He was always there for her and was the sweetest, even though he had some childhood drama also. Mila and Everett really complemented each other, I love how they could just be themselves around each other and there was no judgement! I loved seeing all of Everett’s friends and love a male group! Ripley is hilarious! Thank you for the early copy!
I won an ARC of this book in a Goodreads giveaway from the Publisher.
WOW. If I could, I’d rate this a 10/10. The first chapter or two, I prematurely judged this book and thought “*eye-roll* another predictable boring rom com where they chase each other through several misunderstandings before realizing they have to have each other at the very end”
Boy was I wrong. This book pleasantly surprised me through its entirety. I don’t think I’ve read a book as fast as this one in some time. Mila and Everett really stole my heart and I loved reading their story. The relationship between Mila and her mom struck a few cords for me and Mila’s character development was inspiring. The ending was not disappointing in the slightest, and while maybe predictable, I was still elated by the ending and felt like there may even be more to come in the future from this author??? 👀 if you haven’t gathered it by now I highly recommend this book. This so far is my top 2026 read. I loved every second of it. Very grateful to have received an ARC copy as I am positive I will read this book more than once.
Where do I find a strawberry print skirt, because I need one? I also need a ladybug necklace, someone to call me by a cute nickname like Freckles, and a sexy AF mayor/farmer who will throw me on the bed and eat me for dessert.
What a fantastic start to this series.
Four girls, from the same small town agree that they will be brave, have an adventure, take a risk, to honour their lost friend, Lydia. Mila will make a move on Everett McKean, but things don’t go quite to plan. Mila makes her move and then moves away. She marries, gets divorced and then returns to Hart’s Landing when her mum needs her.
Her mum, honestly, made me feel stabby. What an awful woman - and shock, horror, I did not know that Melanie Harlow had it in her to write such an unloveable character. Melanie writes characters with more sunshine and happiness than Little Miss Sunshine, Mr Happy and KC and the Sunshine Band put together.
The little touches in this book make it so special. The Community Updates on the Landing Pad are hilarious.
I am already so excited for the next book. I just know that there will be Lebanese food, which I love almost as much as strawberry print skirts.
My best bits.
“Can I tell you what I’m thinking? It involves you leaving lots of claw marks on my back. Possibly some reverse cowgirl. And a number between sixty-eight and seventy, but don’t ask me to tell you what it is.” “I won’t” “Okay fine, it’s sixty-nine.”
“You cook, I do dishes. You drawn the art, I hang it up. You get cold at night, I like providing the body heat that keeps you warm.”
“It’s like your soul recognises its missing piece, even if your brain needs more time to understand. You’ve always been my missing piece Freckles.” OMG Everett is so swooooooooony!
“The best tomorrows come when you live today out loud. When you love with your whole heart. When you show up in the world exactly where you’re meant to. Then every tomorrow becomes a gift.”
Melanie Harlow’s “Hart’s Landing,” the first in the self-titled series, features a small-town romance between the town mayor and an illustrator who burned down the bakery a decade earlier.
In 2015, Rachel, Yasmine, Gabi, and Mila sit together for the last time reading the wishes left for them by their friend Lydia “Ladybug” after she dies from leukemia during their senior year. Mila’s request is to finally kiss Gabi’s brother, Everett McKean, her longtime crush. Just two years older than her, Everett is home from college for the summer when he stops by his parents’ bakery to see Mila.
After recently applying to Juilliard for dance, Mila opens the letter and sets it on fire. Minutes later, Everett walks into the bakery, Mila kisses him, and the place catches fire and explodes. Forced to live with the town’s shame and resentment after the McKeans lose their bakery because they lacked insurance, Mila leaves for college and does not return until her mother, preparing for double hip surgery, asks Mila to come home for six weeks to help care for her.
Now thirty, Everett is the mayor of Hart’s Landing, Michigan, and also works on his family’s cherry farm. In his spare time, he spends time with friends at the Axe & Barrel pub, where he still holds the top spot on the axe-throwing leaderboard.
At twenty-eight, Mila returns to Hart’s Landing divorced and determined to avoid relationships despite her therapist’s warnings against avoidance. Working as a freelance botanical illustrator and adjunct professor at an art school in Brooklyn, Mila is able to take time away to help her mother. However, as she begins spending more time with Everett, she starts to question whether she is truly capable of a relationship. Together, the two must decide not only what they want emotionally, but also whether uprooting their lives is worth the chance at a future together.
Harlow’s novel features multifaceted characters. Mila is deeply self-conscious and struggles with low self-esteem. Her mother is narcissistic and frequently gaslights her, though at times Mila’s characterization can feel overly passive and defeated. While Mila does experience meaningful growth throughout the novel, some of her decisions in the final ten percent of the story feel immature, particularly given her age. The third-act breakup near the end of the novel (90%) is especially frustrating and unnecessary.
Everett, meanwhile, fits the familiar “golden retriever” romance hero archetype: endlessly supportive, dependable, and wholly devoted to the woman he loves. The novel also includes a mystery surrounding the bakery fire and whether Mila was truly responsible, adding an entertaining layer of suspense to the romance. However, the final revelation feels somewhat underwhelming, lacking both accountability and emotional closure. Still, the novel effectively sets up future installments centered on the other friends in the series.
Rating: 3.5/5 rounded
I received an ARC through Edelweiss via Entangled: Amara and Macmillan in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Hart’s Landing was everything I could have wanted in a small-town romance! Mila’s returning to her hometown to take care of her difficult (that’s an understatement!) mother. The last thing she needs is people bringing up the scandal from her past, or to run into the boy she left behind – her best friend’s brother! Everett has never really gotten over Mila or the night that changed everything for his family. As the town’s mayor, he’s got a full plate without having to confront the unresolved chemistry with Mila. Their second chance love story was equal parts emotion and steam. I couldn't get enough of their history or the way he fought for her!
The mystery of the old bakery fire definitely had me intrigued, but it’s the found family vibes and quirky characters of this cozy small town that really made me fall in love. Hart’s Landing is more than just a spicy and fun romance (although it is those things!). The heart of the story lies in discovering that coming home is less about a place and more about the people who love you unconditionally. If you’re looking for a story with a devoted hero, memorable characters, and a whole lot of heart, this is definitely one that belongs at the top of your TBR!
Mila returns home after being gone for ten years to help take care of her mother (who’s also extremely narcissistic and their relationship is toxic) when she has a double hip replacement. But she’s coming back to a town with some heavy memories and a horrible moment from her past weighs on her a bit. Returning isn’t easy. The romance is sort of second chance? But more like second try for the first chance?
All in all, It was good, but not a standout for me. The romance was a bit fast, and felt mostly lust driven. I’m not sure I entirely loved the MMC, but he had some good moments. I just needed a bit more from the growth of the relationship. I also did feel like sometimes the spicy scenes placements felt weird? Although to me, the spice wasn’t cringy. I most enjoyed the FMCs growth when it came to her relationship with her mom, and how things ended up with her friends. I also liked that Harlow threw in entries from the “landing pad” which is like an online forum updating the residents about things happening in the town and town gossip. Gave this kind of a quirky unique element. The prologue and epilogue in Lydia’s point of view was clever, however it almost felt unnecessary or just there to be there to give the book an interesting thing. If there was more of a reason for these POVs weaved into the story, I think it would have worked better.
Small town romances will always have my heart, and I’m still interested to see where this series goes next! Undecided if I’ll read the next one right away, may wait for some reviews to come out about it first.
First in a new small town series and I’m already hooked 🏡✨
Hart’s Landing gave me everything I love about Melanie Harlow’s books—charm, swoon, a tight knit (and slightly chaotic) community, and a romance that just hits. Mila and Everett had that perfect second chance energy, and I genuinely forgot how soft and swoony her writing can be until this one pulled me right back in.
Everett as the town’s beloved mayor?? Obsessed. The way he cares about the town (and Mila 👀) just made everything even better. Mila’s growth—especially when it comes to her relationship with her mom—was so satisfying to watch unfold and I was oddly proud of her by the end.
And then there’s the mystery… because that night? the fire? the fractured friendships? yeah… I need answers and I need the next book immediately even though we got some clarity I need more of this town.
This was sexy, heartfelt, and such a strong start to a series I already know I’m going to eat up.
✨ if you love small town romance with a little extra depth and drama, this one is for
This is the first book in a series where a subplot will run through the series and it’s going to be so interesting to see where it takes this group!
Our FMC is returning to her hometown after being gone for a decade due to a night that changed the lives of her and her friends in ways we will see throughout the series. Secrets and guilt flood this town but they also have that lighthearted small town vibe with all the meddling and gossip that makes it such a fun small town. The FMC is going through it with her mother and she is very relatable and goes through MAJOR growth and I liked that we saw that.
Our MMC is rough around the edges but his past haunts him as well. He is a flirt from the start and doesn’t hold back! For someone who’s rough around the edges he’s a golden retriever puppy for her! I did find bits a little slow but overall it was fantastic and I can’t wait to see who’s next!
I received this as an arc and it’s my honest opinion.
This was seriously the cutest little romance. Found family, spicy scenes, a little mystery, and romance all wrapped into a pretty little story. This had me feeling all the feels.
I’m obsessed and I need Y and R’s story RIGHT NOW.
Thank you so much Entangled and Amara for the eARC!
There are some books you enjoy… and then there are the ones that quietly reach into your chest and stay there. Hart’s Landing is that kind of book for me.
This wasn’t just a story I read—it was one I felt.
Mila’s experience hit so close to home it honestly caught me off guard. The way her mother’s constant criticism shaped how she saw herself, the way she tried to make herself smaller, quieter, easier to love… it felt achingly real. And for the first time in a long time, I felt seen. I felt heard. I felt understood in ways I didn’t even realize I needed.
But what made this story so special is that it didn’t just sit in that pain—it gently, beautifully showed a way through it.
Watching Mila return to Hart’s Landing, face her past, and slowly start to rebuild herself was incredibly moving. Her journey wasn’t perfect or easy, and that’s exactly why it mattered so much. There were moments that genuinely made me pause and reflect on my own relationships—and even take away small, meaningful ways to handle them differently.
And then there’s Everett. Steady, patient, and so full of quiet care. Their connection felt like a second chance not just at love, but at being truly known and accepted. It never felt rushed or forced—just soft, intentional, and healing in the best way.
The friendships, the small-town atmosphere, the lingering mystery of the past… it all came together into something that felt warm and deeply human. But more than anything, this book is about growth. About forgiveness. About choosing yourself, even when it’s hard.
I loved every single second of this.
And more than that—it meant something to me. In a way that’s hard to fully put into words, this book gave me a sense of comfort and clarity I didn’t expect when I picked it up.
Some stories entertain you. Some stories change you, even just a little.
This was an interesting small town, second chance romance.
The female main character, Mila, has to navigate living and caring for her mother for 6 weeks back in her home town while also unexpectedly starting a relationship with her high school crush. To top it off, there was a fire at a bakery 10 years ago that Mila has shouldered the blame for. The fire is being looked into again and additional questions arise throughout the book that could clear her name.
However, what makes the book stand out to me is Mila’s relationship with her mother. Her mom is a complete narcissist (as prefaced in the trigger warnings) and a lot of what Mila goes through in this book is because of how her mother treated her her entire life.
It’s not really a “giggling and kicking your feet” type of romance book but rather a journey of reflection and growth for Mila.
You will enjoy this book if you like: ✨Small town romance ✨Second chance romance ✨Romance with your best friend’s brother ✨A hint of mystery ✨Complicated family relationships ✨Small town gossip 👀
Mila left the town of Hart's Landing 10 years ago and now she's temporarily back to take care of her mother. She runs into Everett, the town's mayor, and the boy she had a huge crush on back in the day. Their chemistry is instantly there and Everett takes his chance to win her over. I loved how patient he was with her and how supporting he was. He helped Mila find her strength again. He's literally the biggest green flag and I loved him so much. Mila's mom... man!! She drove me crazy!! But the character growth Mila had was wonderful and I loved seeing her FINALLY stand up for herself.
This one is filled with the wonderful characters, all the small town charm, second chances with friends and love, resilience and healing.
3.5/5 ⭐
Thank you so much to Melanie Harlow & Entangled Publishing for this ARC. All opinions are my own.
I enjoyed this from start to finish. The “what could have been” romance was so well done. I loved Mila’s character growth and I was rooting for her the entire time. Everett falls so hard, so fast and is absolutely perfect for Mila. I appreciated the mix of explicit and fade to black scenes so the plot didn’t get bogged down with spice. This is my first Melanie Harlow book and I’ll be back for more.
I was kindly provided with the arc of this book by NetGalley and author Melanie Harlow in exchange of an honest review, thank you ✨
4.5⭐️
I’ve read so many books by the author and I just knew Hart’s Landing was going to be so good and I wasn’t wrong 🙂↔️✨
I loved everything about this story, Mila is such a great character and I loved her so much🥹💖 she was a very difficult relationship with her mother because she’s narcissistic and she criticized her for literally everything, that lead Mila to believed she wasn’t love worthy and that something was wrong with her, and eventually that mindset messed with her relationships too because she’s a people pleaser and her last relationship ended very bad 💔😭
But oh my girl, she’s so sweet and strong and talented and her heart is so big and full of love!! I just wanted to hold her and telling her she’s perfect just the way she is and that she’s amazing and worthy and lovable and resilient and everything good in this world ❤️ I loved the friendship she had with Gabi, Yasmine and Rachel and it broke my heart reading Lydia’s first POV because I loved her so much🥹❤️🩹 and I loved the fact that after ten years Mila could fixed things with them, expect for one thing that I’m really intrigued about and I need answers to 👀
Now, Everett, oh my god that man, that man 😩🛐 since the moment Mila returned to the town he was trying to get his second chance with her 🙂↔️😮💨 I loved the way they had their first no date (iykyk 🙂↔️) and the thing I loved most, is the fact that he was always trying to be there for her, he always showed up, he was always making sure that she was happy and safe and loved and cared, and most importantly, he always wanted to make sure she was being herself with him because he knew about her past, and he wanted her to make her own choices feel comfortable about it 🥹❤️🩹 he understood her and loved her every second 🥹❤️
I loved everything about this book and I literally can’t wait to keep reading about this characters because I have theories about the main characters and I can’t wait for those stories because I already know their going to be just perfect 😮💨🛐❤️
I have always been a huge fan of Melanie Harlow. So I was excited to start her new small town romance series. What I wasn’t expecting was for it to blow my expectations out of the water. This is definitely one of Melanie’s best. And I need everyone to read it when it releases this May.
But before the release here’s my review of Hart’s Landing!
Let’s kick this off with my PROs: 1. Everett, our MMC. Y’all this man I promise you will love him from the very first page. Everett is literally the definition of a man down bad for his girl. He is so unbelievably kind, patient and understanding of Mila. Like come on y’all he literally gets food delivered to her because she’s known to forget to eat when she’s stressed. I mean hello SWOON 🥰. 2. Everett and Mila together. This is going to sound so cheesy but these characters are what I would define as relationship goals. This is one of the most healthy romantic relationships I’ve seen depicted in a book in a long time. They both respect each other’s boundaries. And my personal favorites even in fights or disagreements they have calm rational conversations. Plus the spice girls was top notch! 3. The side characters specifically the Lady Bug girlies and the Axe God boys. They brought so much comedic relief to the story. And they also brought so much love with their found family dynamics. I can’t wait to see each and everyone of them get their own book.
Now onto my CONs: 1. Mila, our FMC. Now before people say anything. I swear to you I didn’t hate our FMC. I actually really liked her. My only minor complaint was in regards to her relationship with her mother. I really wish Mila had stood up for herself sooner. The BS she went through had me wanting to pull my hair out. Now I’ve never been in a situation like Mila’s so I can’t judge her for taking the time she needed to build up that confidence to do what needed to be done. But I respect Mila for getting help. 2. My last con is of course the witch herself, Mila’s mother. Oh if I met this fictional character in an alleyway there would be hands. I despised this woman and I don’t think she got enough karma for her shenanigans. But that’s just my personal nitpicking gripe.
Overall, I can’t recommend this book enough and I’m excited to pick up my trophy copy this May! Lastly big thank you to NetGalley & Entangled for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review
Thank you to Netgalley and Entangled Publishing for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This was my first book by Melanie Harlow, and I was so excited to dive into it!
This is a he falls first, best friend’s brother, what could have been, small town romance following botanical artist Mila, who left Hart’s Landing behind, and Everett, a farmer and the mayor of Hart’s Landing.
Overall, this story was such a sweet read! Mila felt really relatable, and Everett was literally a perfect guy. I also had so much fun exploring Hart’s Landing throughout the story and meeting all of the characters who live there (I am BEGGING for a Ripley and Yasmine book).
That said, the book did feel a little longer than it needed to be at times. There were a few scenes that dragged on or felt a bit unnecessary. And while Everett was incredible, he almost felt too perfect? One of my favorite things about a what could have been or second chance romance is the tension and history that keeps the characters apart, and this story didn’t really lean into that very much. Everett was pretty immediately all in for Mila, so everything fell into place a little too easily. It made for a really comforting, sweet romance, but at times it felt a little unrealistic.
Even with those things, this was still such a cozy, heartfelt romance, and I’m definitely excited to see which characters the next books in the series will follow!
Who would have ever thought a journey back to Hart’s Landing was in the cards for Mila? With a mother that needs a little help recovering from a recent surgery, Hart’s Landing is exactly where Mila lands.
One thing that Mila has to confront when returning home is the lingering crush she always had on Everett. As her brother’s best friend, Everett was always around Mila. The two seemed to have an attraction, but all of that disappeared when Mila left town. Now – the duo face having their paths cross continuously and that spark might still be brewing under the surface.
Mila’s hopes and dreams are scattered at best. Her career choice along with a failed marriage leaves her questioning the direction of her life. The relationship Mila possesses with her mother is also a point of contention. The last thing Mila needs is to jump head first into another relationship, but connecting with Everett has certainly made Mila realize she needs to take a hard look at the direction of her future.
Hart’s Landing fits the bill for a second chance romance. The connection Mila and Everett possess fuels a novel about reflection and the paths we choose in life. The story delves into the expectations that our family and friends place on your shoulders, and how that burden can certainly change the course you travel in life. So turn the page and discover how Mila and Everett navigate a second chance at finding the person who complete your soul.
Guys. If you follow me you know small town is my kryptonite- add in meddling locals and quirky side characters and I am SOLD!
This was a beautiful book, I loved Mila - she has never prioritised her needs or wants and has always tried to be perfect for others in hope to find her place and the love she longs for. I really enjoyed Mila finding herself, and the courage to stand up for herself and that Everett loves her for who she is down to the base level. They have a fun, honest, loving relationship from the get go. It’s easy to get swept into their love story!
I think we can all learn from Mila, and the boundaries she set with her mother. Sometimes family can be toxic, and it’s important to remember life is short, surround yourself with those you choose and who choose you for you!
Everett is swoony, he’s a golden retriever book boyfriend who really likes to EATTTTT!
Excited for what’s next in this series; I have an inkling of Atleast one other couple and that is going to be EXPLOSIVE if I’m correct *did someone say enemies to lovers?*
ARC Read: This is a smal town romance that starts with 4 best friends doing their best to honor their late best friend. A fire happens that night and Mila leaves behind her crush Everett, best friends, and home town. Now, 10 years later, Mila is back in Hart's Landing to take care of her narcissistic mother after a surgery. Everett is the town mayor and the sparks are still there. This book was so good. I cannot wait to read the rest of the series to find out what happened with the best friends that night 10 years ago and see how they all reconnect and find love.
I'm really enjoying the story. Everett is just ❤️. But I can NOT stand Mila's mom. Every time she appears on the page or is talked about, I want to stop reading. She really takes the enjoyment out of the book.
Okay. Mila is so frustrating right now! She has a therapist. Great! But what good is having a therapist if you aren't honest with them? Her mother has her so beat down and brainwashed that she's never truly honest with how she is, what she does, or say. She's always making excuses.
171 - Mila needs a backbone and tell her mother her truths! Stop taking all of her verbal abuse!!
I originally was not going to read this so soon/buy it (because of those edges of course), but then I was able to get the ARC. And I just needed a mindless, sweet romance.
And well, that was maybe half of what I got. The beginning started off quite strong in the parental abuse situation (I had read the TW). The vibes were immediately forlorn and looking dreary. So, I was hesitant to even continue right from the get go. Everett - the love interest - was introduced pretty quickly, but it took a second for some romantic notions to start happening. Because that’s what carried the story ultimately - Mila and Everett. Both of them had faced parental abuse, so it was hard-hitting. The mystery component - which I hardly ever judge too harshly in a romance - was just kinda there. It had some development, but it was a little half-assed. The best friend’s brother trope - which I adore - was also half-assed. It didn’t even make a play until way into the story, and it caused no drama whatsoever. The friendship aspect was nice to see develop, and definitely sets up for future books.
Another relatively minor thing was the amount of scene breaks used (not sure the proper verbiage). The scene would be happening, then it would have that “cut” that jumped to something a little bit more in the future (not as much as maybe a chapter would). This chopped the story up quite often so that it didn’t flow flawlessly/nicely. To be honest, the writing was very meh too. I don’t think the small town vibes were totally present, except maybe the forum.
All that to say, this was not horrible, just seemed kinda thrown together, which turned up a decent romance with some underdeveloped plotlines. As this was my first book by Harlow, I won’t give up completely. The smut was pretty good after all.
I was so thrilled to receive an advanced copy of Hart’s Landing. The idea of small-town charm mixed with a touch of mystery immediately hooked me, and Melanie Harlow absolutely delivered. This book is two parts romance, one part mystery, and completely wrapped in small-town charm.

At A Glance: Mila Ferguson hasn’t returned to her hometown of Hart’s Landing in over a decade after fleeing when the blame for an accidental fire at the bakery she worked at was placed solely on her. That all changes when her mother needs a double hip replacement, and Mila has no choice but to come home. Once there, Mila quickly realizes not much has changed—including her mother’s constant criticism and her massive crush on Everett McKean, the brother of one of her closest high school friends and the son of the bakery’s owners. Everett, now the mayor of Hart’s Landing, hasn’t forgotten Mila either—or the kiss they shared the night of the fire. As old feelings quickly resurface, Everett becomes determined to prove to Mila that there’s still a place for her in Hart’s Landing, and maybe even a future there too. Blending romance, family drama, healing, and a touch of mystery, Hart’s Landing delivers the perfect mix of small-town vibes, second chances, and emotional depth while still leaving you eager to uncover the truth of what really happened all those years ago.
Thoughts: Mila and Everett have undeniable chemistry. From their very first scene together—set ten years ago —to the present timeline, you can feel the invisible string tugging between them. I loved the way their history was woven throughout the story, and Everett was such a satisfying romantic lead: a total golden retriever MMC complete with an actual golden retriever named Merlin, but with enough rugged edges to give all that golden retriever energy some serious bite 🔥 Everett earned ten out of ten marks from me.
I also really appreciated how grounded Mila’s character felt. Her struggles with self-confidence and her complicated relationship with her mother were portrayed in a way that felt very realistic, and I liked that the story didn’t shy away from showing her actively working through those things in therapy. On top of that, the environmental scientist in me absolutely loved seeing “phytoremediation” casually appear in a romance novel, and Mila being a botanical illustrator added such a unique and refreshing layer to the story.
In addition, Hart’s Landing itself completely shines as a setting. The town feels cozy and lived-in, full of quirky dynamics and supporting characters that make you immediately want more stories set there. One of my favorite details was the competing neighboring wine bar and dive bar owned by Mila and Everett’s best friends — who also happen to be rivals 👀 The supporting cast was set up so well that I already know the future books in this series are going straight onto my TBR.
I do wish the mystery element had come through a little stronger because that aspect initially hooked me so hard. While I found the unraveling of the truth slightly underwhelming, I was ultimately really satisfied with the resolution, and it definitely feels like there are still more secrets left to uncover in Hart’s Landing. The social-media-style town updates sprinkled throughout the book were also such a fun touch and made the town feel even more alive.
If you’ve enjoyed the Story Lake series books by Lucy Score, I think this one will absolutely hit for you too.
Massive thank you to Melanie Harlow, Entangled Publishing, and NetGalley for the complimentary advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own 💕
HART’S LANDING officially has my heart in a chokehold and I am already way too emotionally invested in this town and these people. Hart’s Landing is sweet, emotional, a little messy in all the right ways, and exactly the kind of smalltown, second chance romance that sneaks up on you and grips the heart. This story delivers everything I love about Melanie Harlow- the swoons, the heat, the smalltown charisma, and unforgettable characters. What a fun and charming start to the series!
Our heroine Mila returns home after ten years away, telling herself it is only temporary, just long enough to take care of her mom after surgery. But Hart’s Landing is not the kind of place that lets you slip back in quietly. It holds memories, mistakes, and one absolutely swoony mayor who has never really stopped looking at her like she is his unfinished story.
Because Everett McKean? Yeah, he is THAT man. DELICIOUS. The kind of smalltown hero who feels equal parts steady, warm, flirty, and devastatingly patient. He has spent years quietly carrying feelings for Mila, and when she finally comes back, it is like everything he has been waiting for is suddenly standing right in front of him again. He does not push, he does not demand, he just shows up over and over in the most effortless, heartmelting way. I am talking emotional support, quiet understanding, and a whole lot of “always you” energy that had me absolutely swooning over him.
Poor Mila is carrying so much. Guilt, grief, unfinished friendships, and a past that she has spent a decade trying to outrun. Coming home means facing all of it again, including Everett. Their connection never really died, it just got buried under time, silence, and everything left unsaid. Watching them circle each other again is tender, emotional, and full of that slow burn tension where every glance feels like history reopening itself.
What really got me though is how much this story is about coming back to yourself. Mila reconnecting with her childhood friends, the weight of what happened that night, and the messy, complicated path toward forgiveness all give this romance real depth. It is not just about second chances in love, it is about second chances in life, friendship, and identity. I related so much to that, and honestly it gave me a bit of hope about what's possible.
Also can we talk about this town? Because Hart’s Landing is chaotic in the best way. The gossip, the community energy, and especially the Landing Pad updates had me laughing and fully obsessed. It feels so vivid, like a character itself, like you could actually move there and immediately get dragged into everyone’s business whether you wanted to or not. GOod thing I do.
The emotional layers are balanced beautifully with charm, humor, and plenty of chemistry. Everett and Mila are so great together. There is history, tension, comfort, and that undeniable pull that makes it feel like they were always meant to find their way back to each other.
This does have some overarching elements that will carry into the next book, so I'm excited to see how it all plays out. I am already fully bought in for this series. The friendships, the mystery lingering, and the promise of more love stories in this messy, charming group of women has me completely hooked. Going to be another stellar series for Melanie- can't wait to grab this one on audio!
