The only thing worse than a hero is a team of heroes. Jim Riven knows it, and the Spectrum—the world’s most super special hero team—is proving him right. The Dare should have been a simple competition for recruitment, but these geniuses let someone corrupt their minds and turn it into something far more lethal, ironically forcing Jim to work with a bunch of misfit wannabes to survive. Although, the half-reformed villain is pretty cute, but whatever.
Now they’ve found a path to the endgame, and to what Jim’s been searching for all along—the truth about what happened to his sister, the hero Lock. They just have to get there in one piece.
But the Dare is only the first move in a much larger game, and the enemy’s final gambit could break the world. These oddballs might be the worst team-up ever, but right now they’re all humanity’s got. As the hunted become the hunters, it’s up to Jim and his band of wannabes to confront the evil force behind it all and do what the Spectrum cannot. What Jim swore he would never, ever do.
We pick up mere moments after the end of Worst Hero Ever (after a short reintroduction). Jim is right there with all the one-liners and snappy responses. Our heroes are in trouble, and have to find a way to get the Spectrum to turn back to the good side. I adore this team in ways I can’t describe. Archer Thorn has done a delightful job of pulling together the scrappy underdogs in such a way that you can’t help but love them. Kelvin and his super useful skill of being able to avoid fights (I promise it’s relevant), Zoe who is the ultimate bad girl gone good, and Natalie, the youngest and most earnest of the group. (Lowk, she’s also the biggest badass. Whew!)
Jim had some tough choices to make in this book. Save the world, or save his family. But that doesn’t mean he’s not going to do it without a killer banter monologue in his head the whole time. I mean, who are we kidding. And there was a moment where I may have actually shouted at my Kindle. Out loud. On purpose. (You know what you did, Archer Thorn!)
This whole book (and series) is an absolute delight. Not too heavy on the violence, lots of great lines, and what I feel is a message more of us could use right now. I’d even go so far as to say this would be a great series for middle grades on up. I can’t wait to hear what’s next for our underdog heroes in the next book!
Worst Team-Up Ever is available on Nov 4, and Worst Hero Ever is already out. I strongly recommend picking up both books, you need this kind of fun in your life!
Humongous thank you to Archer Thorn for the gifted eARC! I’m so honored to have received an early copy of this fantastic book. All opinions are my own.
Thank you so much to Archer Thorn for reaching out to offer me an ARC of this book after I loved the first one so much.
I thought I would read it in a couple of hours, and then I had a better idea. When you're exhausted and work is really draining, the best thing you can do is have something to look forward to each day. Instead of letting myself devour this book as I wanted to, I rationed it, and read a little bit on my walk to work every day. It is no exaggeration to say that sometimes, reading this book on that journey is what got me out of bed in the mornings! Colleagues commented on it: "You must be reading something really good, because every day I see you walk in, you've got your kindle out." It very nearly lasted me to the end of term, and I strongly recommend this technique!
The book was truly brilliant. Phenomenally funny, tender and sensitive in parts, and a damn good storyline to boot. It was a perfect sequel (you really must read book one first to appreciate it fully). I am so particular about comedy, and this saga just hits every note. It won't even bore you if you've got superhero fatigue - Thorn brings his own flavours to the table and serves the superhero book you didn't know your life was missing.
I thoroughly enjoyed diving back into this series with Worst Team-Up Ever, which picks up mere moments after the end of the previous book. The fast-paced, action-packed style of Archer Thorn is brilliantly continued, centering on our scrappy underdog team as they race to find a way to turn the powerful Spectrum back to the good side. I absolutely adore this team, especially the charismatic Jim with his non-stop, killer banter and snappy responses, even when facing tough choices between saving the world and saving his family. We get to learn more about the unique powers and personalities of the whole crew: the anti-fight skills of Kelvin the ultimate bad-girl-gone-good Zoe, and the earnest, secretly badass youngest member, Natalie.
This entire book, and the series as a whole, is an absolute delight, striking a perfect balance—it’s not too heavy on the violence, but offers plenty of great lines and a positive message we could all use right now. Thorn masterfully weaves a tale that's equal parts hilarious and heart-pounding. Jim's sharp wit and snarky inner monologues are a constant source of amusement as in book 1, but I LOVED in inclusion of other POV characters for added depth of writing from Thorn. For fans of Golden and Silver Age comics who enjoy proper superhero fights where the women go toe-to-toe with the men, this series is a perfect fit. I appreciate how the author continues to build out the characters and world, and even gives us a little more insight into why it's called the Black Cape Saga Highly recommended for a fun and engaging read, I’m eagerly looking forward to what’s next for this team in the next book!
I was given this book complimentary from Book Sirens in e-book form in return for my honest review. Everything stated in this review is of my own opinion and I was not compensated monetarily for providing this review. I said in my review for #1 in this series "I hope the author can maintain the story through book #2", well, the author can! The fast paced style is continued and we learn more of the characters and powers of the team members. We also learn a little more about why this series is called the Black Cape Saga. I am really getting to like all the members of this little team and the supporting folks as well so I am pleased to say that there is a teaser for the next in the series. If you like "proper" super-heroes from the Golden and Silver ages of comics this really is the series for you, If you like no punches pulled superhero fights where the girls go toe to toe with the guys and give at least as good as they get then this is the series for you. I am and I do so I am eagerly looking forward to #3 Five golden stars and highly recommended.
