Club Velvet Petal #3

King of Rebuke

Rate this book
I escaped one monster only to find myself under the protection of another—a towering, brooding giant with eyes that have seen too much darkness and hands that kill without remorse.

Since escaping my abusive ex-husband, I’ve carefully rebuilt my life, managing a high-end fashion store by day and raising my three daughters by night. I’ve perfected the art of finding light in darkness, of meeting each challenge with a smile, no matter how forced. But when Sergio Bianchi sets his sights on me as his future wife, my hard-won independence shatters in an instant.

Then he walks in. Eli Abbott. Forty-eight to my thirty-six, six-foot-five to my five-foot-two, scarred by demons I can only imagine, and possessing the social skills of a hibernating bear. My sunny disposition bounces off his granite exterior like light failing to penetrate darkness.

Now he’s assigned as my protector. My personal bodyguard. A walking shadow with cold eyes and blood-stained hands who radiates danger with every silent step.

The twelve-year age gap between us feels insignificant compared to the chasm in our personalities. His growled commands clash with my cheerful defiance. His minimalist responses battle my endless chatter. Yet behind his gruff exterior, I glimpse something hauntingly familiar—a survivor, like me.

The forced proximity between us becomes unbearable. Not because I fear him, but because I want him with an intensity that terrifies me. His possessiveness should remind me of my ex, but instead it makes me feel cherished. Protected. Desired.

With every touch Eli offers comes the promise of danger, obsession, and a protection that might just bind us together forever.

As Sergio’s pursuit turns deadly and secrets between Eli and me threaten what we’re building, I realize I’ve fallen for a morally gray guardian who would kill without hesitation for those he considers his. The stakes couldn’t be higher—my freedom, my daughters’ safety, and a forbidden love that could either save us or destroy everything I’ve fought to build.

But in a world where trust is scarce and life is fragile, are we willing to risk it all for a chance at love?

Some men are worth the risk. Some monsters are worth embracing. And sometimes, the line between the two blurs beyond recognition.

Author’s This is Eli and Lydia’s story. A grumpy-sunshine, bodyguard, age gap, tormented hero, touch her and perish, the “F-it” moment, survivor of domestic violence, forced proximity, forbidden, taboo, emotional, angst-filled, dark mafia romance between a morally gray, overly protective, mafia bodyguard whose never allowed love into his heart, and the perpetually optimistic, independent woman who’s determined to do everything herself.

Trigger warnings can be found at the beginning of the book, before the start of chapter one. Please read before proceeding.

While each book in the Club Velvet Petal series is written as a standalone love story with a HEA, the mafia plotline does not conclude and continues to build throughout the series. There are no cliffhangers but this series is best enjoyed if read starting from book one. Not doing so could confuse readers on the mafia plotline and characters.

I’m always up for a bodyguard romance

This book follows Lydia, a single mom of three who escaped an abusive marriage while pregnant and has spent the last few years rebuilding her life.

One night when she’s out with the girls at Club Velvet Petal she catches the eye of Sergio Bianchi, the underboss leader of the New York Mafia. When he sets eyes on Lydia he wants to make her his wife and Sergio doesn’t take no for an answer so Lydia is forced to take on a security detail Eli Abbott

Now enters Eli Abbott tall dark and handsome has been working security for Zeke’s Organization for many years and had made life for himself in the shadows. Eli isn’t one for personal attachments but when he meets Lydia his walls come crumbling down around him so he made himself Lydia’s security detail until the threat of Sergio is gone but when Sergio’s threats escalate Eli stops at nothing to make sure Lydia is protected.

I loved how Lydia realized that she has an attraction to Eli and when they both realized that there’s chemistry there they both jump into it like it’s the most natural thing in the world.
It’s like two imperfect souls that complete each other.

If King Of Rebuke isn’t on your TBR list then you get it on there this is one of my favorite series

Aleia Kane has done it again, King of Rebuke was amazing! This is my second read of Aleia Kane and she did not disappoint with the third book in the Club Velvet Petal Series, once I started I could not put the book down.

This follows the story of Eli and Lydia and the amazing story that lead them to one another. Lydia escaped her abusive ex husband with her three young daughters three years ago. She spent three years building her career, focusing on her life and managing her high end designer store Violet Confidence. She has built a life that she is proud of for both her and her daughters. One night when she is out with the girls at Club Velvet Petal she catches the eye of Sergio Bianchi, the underboss of the leader of the New York mafia. He has his eyes set on Lydia, he wants to make her his wife and Sergio Bianchi doesn’t take no for an answer. So Lydia is forced to take on a security detail…..enter Eli Abbott.

Eli Abbott, tall, dark and handsome has worked security for Zeke’s organization for many years and he has made a life for himself in the shadows. Eli is not one for any personal attachments to anyone or anything because of his past and being abandoned by his parents at a young age. It is not until he meets Lydia that his walls come crumbling down around him. He is assigned to her security detail until the threat that is Sergio Bianchi is gone. He finds himself living in Lydia’s house, spending time with her, taking her to and from work and he cannot resist this pull she has on him. When Sergio’s threats escalate, Eli realizes that he will stop at nothing to protect Lydia and make sure that she is out of harm’s way.

I loved every minute of this book, from page one until the very last page! I was hooked and I could not put it down. The way both Lydia and Eli loved each other and just jumped all in like it was the most natural thing in the world even though admitting love scared them both. They were two broken pieces that found each other to make one whole piece, two imperfect souls that completed one another. If King of Rebuke is not on your TBR list and at the very top then it needs to be! I promise you that you will not be disappointed. King of Rebuke releases on Tuesday, December 3rd. ✨Please check your trigger warnings✨Thank you to author Aleia Kane and Grey’s Promotions for the opportunity to read this eARC. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Lydia Emery is thirty-six, a devoted mother to three beautiful daughters, and a survivor of a brutally violent marriage. Three years after escaping her past, she’s rebuilt a life she’s proud of managing Violet Confidence by day and raising her girls by night. When her daughters head off to Disney with her parents for two weeks, Lydia allows herself one rare night out with her best friends. That single decision changes everything.

At the club, she meets Sergio Bianchi, second in command to Nicolo Moretti, Don of the Italian mafia in New York. What Lydia believes is a harmless conversation quickly turns into something far more dangerous. Sergio is not a man who understands rejection, and his reputation with women precedes him. What starts as discomfort escalates into obsession; and suddenly, Lydia has a stalker who refuses to accept that no means not interested.

Enter Eli Abbott. Forty-eight years old, working security for the King family, Eli is a weapon, a shield, and an unmovable wall between danger and the people he’s assigned to protect. There couldn’t be a better man to serve as Lydia’s bodyguard and when Eli commits to a job, he commits completely. Maybe too completely. When he moves in with Lydia to keep her safe, it becomes clear that his feelings are no longer just professional. Somewhere along the line, protection turned into something far more dangerous: attachment.

This third book in the Velvet Club series is a very slow burn, and it works beautifully. Aleia Kane writes mature characters who have lived, suffered, and survived; people who have experienced bad relationships, trauma, and abandonment, and who no longer believe love is guaranteed for them. Eli is intensely protective, borderline overprotective and while I love a protective man, Eli had me internally screaming OMG more than once.

One of my favorite aspects of this series is the bond between the women. Every female lead, past and present, is a survivor of violence, and they form a found family that acts as a safety net for one another. Their shared understanding, loyalty, and dark humor bring warmth and balance to an otherwise dangerous world. This quote perfectly sums it up:

“Falling for dangerous men with protective streaks. It’s practically our support group’s theme at this point.”

I truly love Aleia Kane’s stories. It’s refreshing and deeply emotional to read about older characters who choose to believe that love is still possible, after everything they’ve endured. King of Rebuke is intense, tender, and deeply satisfying, and I will absolutely be waiting for the next book… patiently. Or not. I want it now. 🥰

Thank you to Aleia Kane and Grey’s Promotions for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review. This review is entirely my own. 🖤📚

The softest place to land is in a dangerous man’s arm 😌

4.5 ⭐️ | 3.5 🌶️

King of Rebuke is the third installment in Aleia Kane’s Club Velvet Petal series, and at this point, I’m fully seated, buckled in, and emotionally invested. Kane continues to prove that she knows exactly how to write morally gray men, resilient women, and relationships that grow, crack, and burn in the most delicious ways.

This book follows Lydia, a single mother of three who escaped an abusive marriage while pregnant and has spent the last few years rebuilding her life piece by fragile piece. She’s strong, independent, and armed with a sunshine personality that hides deep scars. Lydia doesn’t need saving: she needs space, safety, and control over her own future.

Enter Eli Abbott. Broody, towering, emotionally closed-off, and the head of security for the Kings, Eli is the definition of grumpy, morally gray protector. He’s never been in love, doesn’t waste words, and lives by rules carved from survival and blood. Assigned as Lydia’s personal bodyguard, Eli becomes her shadow: silent, dangerous, and impossible to ignore.

Their forced proximity is chef’s kiss perfection.

The contrast between Lydia’s ballsy defiance and Eli’s growled authority creates tension that simmers from page one. She refuses to shrink. He refuses to walk away. And somewhere between shared space and unspoken trauma, walls start to crack.

What I loved most is Eli’s growth. Watching a man who has never allowed himself softness unravel in the presence of a woman and her children was incredibly satisfying. His transformation from detached enforcer to full-blown touch-her-and-die protector is everything. His protection doesn’t feel controlling, it feels like a warm hug under a fuzzy blanket: grounding, steady, and safe.

Lydia, meanwhile, remains unapologetically strong. She’s shaped by her past but not defined by it, and her resistance to slipping into old patterns makes her journey feel real and earned.

The romance is intense, emotional, and possessive in all the right ways. It’s sexy without overpowering the story, tender without losing its edge, and rooted in trust that’s hard-won and deeply felt. Add in looming danger, deadly pursuit, and secrets that threaten everything they’re building, and you’ve got a story that keeps you turning pages late into the night.

Thank you to Grey’s Promotions for the e-ARC, and congratulations to Aleia Kane on this release (December 23rd). If King of Rebuke is any indication, book four cannot come fast enough.

King of Rebuke begins with Lydia and her girlfriends enjoying a night out at Club Velvet Petal, which is owned by her friend Eve’s boyfriend, Ezekiel (Zeke) King. Zeke is also the head of powerful mafia family there in Columbus. A lot of Lydia’s girlfriends have found their happily ever after within the organization and she soon finds herself longing for the same.

Lydia excuses herself from the table to go to the ladies’ room when she encounters a very handsome stranger who immediately makes his move. She was flattered until Eli Abbott, Zeke’s head of security, steps in. Lydia tries her best to tell Eli she had the situation under control, but he was not having it. Not in their club and certainly not with Sergio Bianchi, who just happened to be a rival family’s enforcer. Sergio finally walks away. Unfortunately for Lydia, he is a man who is used to getting what he wants. Fortunately, Eli is an excellent protecter and he cannot help but wonder about the lovely Lydia.

It does not take long for Sergio to become Lydia’s worst nightmare, showing up at her work with extravagant gifts, “bumping” into her at the grocery store and knowing everything about her life, including her children’s names. Once Zeke is made aware of Sergio’s behavior, it takes about a nanosecond for Eli to be assigned as security for Lydia. Her girls are leaving town for two weeks with their grandparents, which is good timing considering the mounting threat to Lydia. As the tension mounts, security around Lydia is amped up and Eli moves in to make sure nothing, and no one touches her. Except maybe him…………. But once Lydia decides to take charge of her own situation and steps into the lion’s den, does she start a war or find the man of her dreams?

King of Rebuke is a wonderful addition to the Club Velvet Petal series. Lydia and Eli’s chemistry was amazing and believable, each with their own heartbreaking backstories. The secondary characters add layers to the story and are well written. King of Rebuke is ultimately a story about letting go of the past and believing in and finding true trust. And love! If you are a fan of the genre, you will love this one! Well done, Aleia Kane! Very well done!

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️¾ (3.75/5)

King of Rebuke pulled me in right away with its tropes—and honestly, that’s why I signed up for the ARC in the first place. Forced proximity, bodyguard romance, morally gray protector? Say less.

The story follows Lydia, a woman who has already survived one monster—her abusive ex-husband—and is doing everything she can to rebuild her life. By day she manages a high-end fashion store, and by night she’s a devoted mother to her three daughters. She’s strong, resilient, and endlessly determined to find light even after everything she’s been through. When a dangerous man sets his sights on her, her hard-earned independence is threatened once again—until Eli Abbott enters her life as her assigned protector.

Eli is everything you expect from a brooding bodyguard hero: older, towering, emotionally closed-off, and scarred by a past soaked in violence. He’s quiet, gruff, and lethal, while Lydia is warm, talkative, and stubbornly hopeful. Their personalities clash immediately, but underneath it all, there’s a shared understanding—two survivors who recognize the darkness in each other.

What I really enjoyed was the slow-burn tension between Eli and Lydia. The way he constantly protects her, puts her safety above everything else, and is clearly fighting feelings he’s had for her long before he allows himself to act on them. That internal battle—control, control, control… until it finally snaps—was one of my favorite parts. When Eli finally gives in, it feels earned.

Lydia was definitely a standout for me. I loved her character—her strength, her resilience, and how she never lost herself despite everything she endured. She didn’t come across as weak or dependent; instead, she held her ground even when surrounded by dangerous men and impossible situations.

I haven’t read the first two books in the series, and even so, I was able to enjoy this one on its own. That said, I do feel like having more background might have deepened the experience, which is probably why this wasn’t a full five-star read for me. Still, I genuinely liked the story and the romance, and it definitely made me want to go back and read the earlier books.

Lydia and Eli🥰

Lydia Emery , 36 years old, is the mother of three beautiful young daughters and survived a very violent relationship with her ex. After 3 years, she’s now the Manager at Violet Confidence and living happily with her kids. Her kids gone for 2 weeks with her parents at Disney, she decided to goone night out with her best friends, in a club, where she met Sergio Bianchi, second in command of Nicolo Moretti, Don of the Italian mafia in New York. What she didn’t know about Sergio is that he have a very bad reputation with women. He is the kind of man you should stay away from. What she thought was just a friendly conversation will end out to be stuck with a stalker that doesn’t understand that no means ‘ I’m not interested’. And here comes Eli Abbatt, 48 years old . Working for the King family, as security in the club, is a weapon. A shield. A wall between threats and those who need protection. The best guy to be Lydia’s bodyguard. And trust him, he will take his job seriously. He even move in with her… and that was his first mistake. Because secretly, he might have more than protective feelings for her….

Third books in the Club Velvet Petal series from Aleia Kane. And this one is a very slow slow burn… And all her characters are older and had bad relationships or just abandoned the idea that one day they will find someone worthy of their love. Don’t get me wrong, I love protective men but Eli is overprotective!!! OMG!!! All the women in the previous books and in this one, survived violent husbands. They all became best friends and are each other’s safety net.

This quote tells it all:
“Falling for dangerous men with protective streaks. It’s practically our support group’s theme at this point.”

I really love her stories. It’s refreshing to read about older characters, who decided that love is still possible after everything they’ve been through. And be sure I will be waiting for the next one patiently… or not!!! I want it now!!!🥰

King of Rebuke is a dark, emotionally charged romance that sinks its claws in early and refuses to let go. This story is raw survival wrapped in obsession, protection, and forbidden desire. The FMC Lydia is a fiercely resilient single mother who has already escaped one monster and is determined never to lose herself again. Watching her balance strength, fear, and unwavering love for her daughters adds real emotional weight and makes every threat feel painfully real.

Eli Abbott our MMC is the kind of morally gray protector romance readers crave—towering, taciturn, dangerous, and deeply broken. He’s not polished or charming; he’s brutally honest, and silently devotional, and his violence is barely kept on a leash. The age gap and forced proximity only amplify the tension, and their opposites-attract dynamic crackles with slow-burn intensity.

Every clash of her sunshine against his shadows feels earned, intimate, and inevitable. What truly sets King of Rebuke apart is how protection becomes obsession—and how that obsession feels both terrifying and intoxicating. Eli’s possessiveness doesn’t diminish her strength; it shields it. Their connection grows in stolen glances, growled commands, and moments of quiet understanding between two survivors who recognize the darkness in each other. The danger is relentless, the stakes brutally high, and the romance unapologetically intense. This is a story about choosing love after trauma, embracing the monster who would burn the world to keep you safe, and risking everything for a future that feels impossible. This is dark, emotional, and fiercely addictive—King of Rebuke is a must-read for anyone who loves protective antiheroes, wounded heroines, and romances that walk the razor-thin line between danger and devotion.

After escaping her abusive ex-husband three years ago, Lydia has spent her time focusing on building a life with her three daughters and focusing on her career managing a high-end fashion store. During a night at the club with her best friends, she catches the eye of Sergio, the underboss of the leader of the New York mafia, trying to take over Columbus. When it becomes evident that Sergio is not going to take no as an answer, she is forced to accept additional security.

Eli has made a life for himself in safety and security, working for Zeke’s organization as he continues to grow a stronghold in Columbus. Never one for personal attachments because of his past, he has never crossed the line between personal and professional, until Lydia. The more time they spend locked together in her home, the less he finds himself able to resist the strong woman before him. Before long, the age gap between them, as well as their personality differences don’t seem so insurmountable anymore, and when Sergio’s advances escalate, Eli realizes there is nothing he won’t do to keep Lydia for himself.

I received an early copy of this book from Grey’s Promotion and absolutely loved it! It was every bit as good as the first two in the series, and I loved that we got to see behind Eli’s gruff demeanour to see the teddy bear underneath. Their relationship was a true display of protection versus possession, and partnernship over control, and I am here for it! I loved how they lifted each other up (because even tough bodyguards need emotional support sometimes), and the scene with Eli reading the book absolutely melted me. I can’t wait to see what will happen next in this series.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is the story of Eli and Lydia. Lydia has really been though it. Since escaping her abusive ex with her three daughters she has been rebuilding her life and doing really well in that department. She is the proud owner of her own high end designer store Violet Confidence. She is really proud of the life she has built and been able to give her girls. Things however don't go in her favor on a night out at at club when the under boss to the leader of the New York Mafia, Serigo Bianchi sees her and sets his sites on her. He is determined to make her his wife. When this man wants something he gets it. Nothing stops him and this forces Lydia to hire a security detail for her and her family. Eli is the man she hires. He is tall handsome and twelve years older than her. He is has a great reputation and has made this reputation working in the shadows. He really does carry some hard, serious things around since he was abandoned by his parents at such a young age. The man is a brick wall until he meets Lydia. Now he finds himself in close quarters with her until Sergio moves on from her and she can take back her life. I loved getting to know these two characters. While Eli is a mountain and closed off I loved watching the man open up and be really invested in Lydia and her girls. I loved the connection they have and the chemistry between them is really amazing. Add in the threats and things from Serigo and the book keeps you one your toes. This is a great read. You will not be able to lay it down.

I do not know what Aleia Kane uses to write these books but I am in love! I absolutely loved Lydia's and Eli's book (I have been waiting for Eli's backstory since King of Power! I love his protectiveness and I love how Aleia shows us the difference between protective and controlling. I love how Lydia is able to be vulnerable and let someone help her instead of taking everything on by herself. I love the forced proximity and the slow burn (which i love to hate lol). I also LOVED the philosophical addition as a philosophy fanatic myself (I definintely geeked out hehe). I also love the continuation of the story line and how it is getting progressively tenser and it's definintely making me anxious and keeping me on my toes as to what will happen next and how this will conclude.

I wish we got more hangouts between Lydia, Naomi, Eve and Olivia. I loved those scenes of friendship in King of Power and I missed it in King of Praise (I know since Naomi was new-er it wasn't as strong of a friendship but still). I want to see my girls taking care of each other and having fun dates together. I want to see them protecting each other and talking about what they are going through. I also lowkey wanted to see Eli be secrity at Lydia's job. Like they are on their way to work, just add a little snippet of her at work with him pleaseeeee. I would have loved more mafia with Micah, Zeke and Seb but that's super minor since we did get more mafia in this book than in King of Praise (in my personal opinion).

King of Rebuke is an emotionally charged dark mafia romance with high stakes, high spice, and a protective, morally grey hero. Lydia is a survivor, escaping an abusive marriage, raising three daughters, and rebuilding her life as an independent woman. Eli Abbott screams danger, but he’s emotionally scarred and socially doesn’t have a clue how to behave.

Lydias newly found independence is threatened when on a rare night out with her friends at Club Velvet Petal, she meets Sergio Bianchi, enforcer with the rival Italian Moretti mafia family. Sergio is used to getting exactly what he wants so now Eli is assigned to be Lydia’s personal bodyguard. Let the fireworks begin.

What starts as protection, with two personalities that clash, her sunshine vs. his stone-cold silence, you get a slow-burn that turns into a blazing, obsessive romance. There is some really fun spice and banter, alongside the secrets they are both keeping and emotional trauma both have been through. When coupled with the threats and danger to Lydia and her children from a mafia pursuer the tension really builds.

Lydia and Eli’s journey is a blend of danger, devotion, and emotional healing. It’s a romance where the hero is dark, protective, obsessive and would burn the world down for the heroine, but a love story with heart. Great addition to the series and I’m definitely looking forward to the next one.

King of Rebuke by Aleia Kane, Book 3 of the Club Velvet Petal Series. This is a Grumpy Sunshine, Dark Mafia Romance following Eli Abbott and Lydia Emery. 🚩This is for readers 18 years and/or older as it has mature content and not suitable for underage readers. There are dark themes that can be triggering so please check out the content warning before you dive in 🚩

My thoughts 💭
Mr. Eli Abbott, I’m not sure which version of him I Love More…hot, protective, quiet body guard or sexy, obsessive boyfriend or sexy, obsessive, protective dad but wow. I have said this before and will continue to scream it out loud for the people in the back …..ALEIA KANE DID THE DAMN THING! She writes these morally grey characters so beautifully flawed and I am obsessed. Lydia is the perfect balance for his personality and she (like all the female characters in this series) has proven to be a force to be reckoned with. She is not a victim, she is a strong badass survivor of domestic abuse and a badass single mom too. But she’s also human and after seeing her friends so happy and in love, she realizes she is ready too. And man is the chemistry between Eli and Lydia hot! I love this series and love this book and I am very ready for Sebs book because his personality with Olivia….its going to be so good.

✨I would like to thank author Aleia Kane and Grey’s Promo for the opportunity to read and review King of Rebuke.

Lydia escaped her ex-husband three years ago with her children. Lydia is out with the other women of the Club Velvet crew to celebrate Naomi's birthday. She catches the eye of Sergio Bianchi, who flirts with her. Eli, the club security, is looking after the women for the night. Eli drags her away, much to her annoyance, and he informs her that Sergio is Nicolo Moretti's offsider and is trying to muscle in on their turf in Columbus. The names mean nothing to Lydia, but she is soon to find out who they are. She finds herself getting scared when Sergio won't stop at no. She doesn't want to go out with him, but he keeps stalking her, leaving her fearful. Eli is sent to be her security both at home and at work, but Sergio is relentless in his pursuit of Lydia. Eli finds himself becoming compromised and falling for Lydia. Will Eli and the Club be able to keep Lydia and her girls safe from Sergio? What will happen when Eli's past, which he thought was well hidden, comes to haunt him?
I recieved an arc for my voluntary honest review for NN Book Blog. If you love dark stalker romances, you will love this book. I loved Eli and Lydia's story and could have turned round and read the book all over again I loved it so much. However, this book may not be for everyone. Therefore, please take note of the author's trigger warnings before reading or purchasing this book.

King of Rebuke by Aleia Kane
MMC: Eli Abbott. (48 years old)
FMC: Lydia Emery (36 years old)

Thanks Grey Promotions and Aleia Kane for the opportunity to ARC read this book.

Trigger warnings can be found at the beginning of the book, before the start of chapter one. Please read before proceeding.

During a night at the club with her friends, she catches the eye of Sergio. He’s the underboss for the leader of the New York mafia, trying to take over Columbus. Book Rating: ⭐️3.5/5
Spice Rating: 🌶️3.75/5

King of Rebuke was a dark, protective bodyguard romance with a strong heroine, a broody morally gray hero, and just enough danger and tension to keep me locked in. Lydia is a single mom rebuilding her life after escaping an abusive marriage, and I really loved her strength and the way she fought for herself and her girls. Eli steps in as her security after a rival mafia enforcer sets his sights on her, and once he moves into her space, the quiet intensity and forced proximity start working fast.

Their chemistry feels believable, the slow push and pull works, and the moment Eli finally lets go is so satisfying. He is fiercely protective in a way that never overshadows Lydia’s agency, which made their dynamic stand out for me. The suspense plot was engaging, and I enjoyed the side characters and world of Club Velvet Petal.

I didn’t fully emotionally connect at every point, which is likely why this lands at a 3.5 for me instead of higher, but I still had a good time and would read more from the series. If you like bodyguard romance with tension, resilience, found family, and a hero who will burn the world down for his girl, this one is worth picking up.

This is book 3 in the Club Velvet Petal series. This book can be read as a standalone but the characters are all the same and interwoven. No major spoliers were mentioned from the previous books. The book series is about the King brother's mafia family in Columbus, Ohio.

This book is about Eli and Lydia. There is a 12 year age gap. Lydia is a single mother with 3 young daughters that already escaped a horrible ex. Eli works for the King brothers. Eli gets assigned to protect Lydia as her bodyguard. Lydia gains the attention of Sergio who is from a rival mafia family.

Lydia doesn't want to ever be controlled by a man again. Lydia prefers to be an independent business woman and mother. I like how the characters are both written and that includes the spicy scenes. Eli is probably much more than substantial but I liked the description anyway. I enjoyed the fact that Eli understood and respected Lydia. I loved the kids and that Eli also accepted them. It made sense how the kids were out of the picture for certain elements of the story.

Thanks to, Grey's Promotions and Aleia Kane, for providing me with an ARC.

🔥🔥ARC BOOK REVIEW🔥🔥

King of Rebuke: A Grumpy Sunshine Bodyguard Mafia Romance is the third book in the Club Velvet Petal Series by Aleia Kane.
The main characters in King of Rebuke are Eli and Lydia. Lydia escaped an abusive marriage with her three daughters and has spent the past three years building a successful career running her designer store, Violet Confidence. Eli Abbott, who works security for Zeke’s organization, leads a solitary life due to a difficult childhood marked by abandonment.
At Club Velvet Petal, Lydia attracts Sergio Bianchi, a mafia underboss who wants to marry her. She hires Eli Abbott for security, and as he protects her from Sergio’s escalating threats, Eli grows closer to Lydia and is determined to keep her safe.
Lydia and Eli, though initially afraid of love, embraced it naturally and found comfort in each other, becoming whole together despite their imperfections.
I really enjoyed this book.

Arc Review — (3.75 ⭐️)

Thank you to Grey’s Promotion for an arc copy of King of Rebuke!

King of Rebuke is the third book in Aleia Kane’s Club Velvet Petal series and continues to deliver emotionally driven, character-focused romance. Lydia is a strong, resilient single mother rebuilding her life after escaping an abusive marriage, and she’s refreshingly written as someone who doesn’t need saving—only safety and autonomy.

Eli, her gruff and emotionally closed-off bodyguard, brings a classic forced-proximity dynamic that works well. The tension between Lydia’s defiance and Eli’s rigid control simmers from the start, and watching him slowly soften—especially around Lydia and her children—was the highlight. The romance is intense and protective without overwhelming the story, and the added danger keeps the pages turning. While some tropes felt familiar, the emotional payoff made this a solid and satisfying read.

Tropes:
-Grumpy Sunshine
-Touch her and D!e
-Morally gray hero
-Age gap
-Protective hero
-Strong heroine
-Singe mom
-Bodyguard

King of Rebuke is Bodyguard, Age-gap sexy and thrilling romance novel between a single mom and a bodyguard she hires to protect herself from someone who doesn’t understand the concept of No means No. Lydia, a single mom catches the attention Sergio who is underworld boss of New York mafia and wants to force Lydia into a marriage with him. To protect herself from him she decides to hire herself a security bodyguard, but she didn’t know that she’ll find it hard to keep away from her bodyguard and same goes for Eli, who is Lydia’s bodyguard, but feels possessiveness and protectiveness for her even beyond Sergio. So, when both of them finds themselves under such circumstances, they fall in love with each other.
The book is sweet, sexy and frustrating, and I loved every second of it. Aleia Kane’s previous book, King of Praise was also one of my favorites read and I really enjoyed this one too. I really like both Lydia and Eli character, Lydia is smart and sexy character who is strong and holds her ground whereas Eli is over the top sexy and sensible male lead.

King of Rebuke is the third book in the Club Velvet Petal series by Aleia Kane. The Club Velvet Petal series has been one of my favorite series this year; and King of Rebuke continues to show show. Throughout the series; Aleia Kane has done an amazing job writing emotionally complex characters; and Lydia and Eli are no exception. Throughout the first two books; Lydia was one of my favorite characters. I appreciated her strength, resilience and how she’s finding her voice. So I was excited to read her happy ending; and I wasn’t disappointed. Eli, the broody, grumpy, morally grey bodyguard was her perfect match. The slow burn tension between Eli and Lydia was Chefs kiss and lead to steamy spice. Though I loved the spice, I really loved the emotional connection between them and how they helped each other heal from their traumas. The mafia plot line kept my attention and I can’t wait to read the next book! Thanks Greys Promo for giving me an opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

**ARC REVIEW**

King of Rebuke was an amazing read. The mix of secrets, danger, and suspense pulled me in from the very first chapter and kept me turning pages until the end. The writing flowed beautifully, and the characters felt well-developed and easy to connect with.

Eli and Lydia were impossible not to root for. I loved their journey together—the tension between them crackles off the page, their chemistry is undeniable, and the banter added lighter moments that perfectly balanced the darker themes. The romance had just the right amount of heat and heart, making their connection feel intense yet meaningful.

This book delivers an emotional, dark, and intense mafia romance filled with danger, protection, and morally gray choices. It is absolutely worth picking up—just be sure to check the TW/CW before diving in.

Thank you to Aleia Kane and Grey’s Promotions for the ARC.

This is the third book in this phenomenal series, and this is Eli and Lydia’s story.
Lydia has been through so much, but after surviving an abusive ex-husband, she works hard to build a new life for herself and her 3-year-old little girl, but Sergio has set his sights on her to become his future wife, and when his pursuit becomes deadly, Eli is assigned to be her protector. Eli is gruff, growly, tormented, and broody, and Lydia sees through his façade and sees a fellow survivor.
This is a well written story which has family, friendships, emotions, angst, secrets, tension, danger, suspense, intrigue, grumpy / sunshine, opposites attract, forced proximity, obsession, touch her and die vibes, challenges, an age gap, humour, revelations, morally gray, trust, survival, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, and unpredictable, dark mafia romance.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

🌶🌶🌶

Eli and Lydia are mere acquaintances via our other characters from the Club Velvet Petal series. Eli (48yr) is very stoic and duty bound, taking his bodyguard duties to his friend's seriously. He has a bitnof an immediate attraction to recently divorced, single mom of 3, Lydia (36 yr).

Though his reasons for attraction seem very insta, their growing relationship was a solid evolution. He's hesitant, of course, which I love, since the situation is a bit complicated and he's never felt so deeply for anyone before so it scares him.

But he felt so sincere and I loved him for all that. Lydia was strong and wasn't afraid to have Eli part of her life. She was a little harsher to Eli about his withholding some things from her, I felt. She made him apologize one too many times, I think. Just wanted her to be more empathetic to how he's feeling too.

That aside, I really enjoyed their love amd the little bit of suspense and especially having our previous characters appear quite often!

King of Rebuke is Eli and Lydia and her 3 daughters. This was such a fantastic Mafia romance and Eli doesn’t disappoint as a bodyguard 🥵 that man is HOT!
Lydia had built a safe life for her and her daughters after an abusive marriage. Her career is great and she’s happy and has great girl friends. But she catches the eye of Sergio the underboss of the NY mafia. And now he’s relentless in his pursuit of making her his property.
Eli steps up and becomes her personal security and vows to do whatever he can to keep her safe. While living together things get deliciously spicy between these 2 and it so so good! The feelings keep getting stronger and that causes problems for Sergio. Things escalade and Sergio becomes unhinged! What a journey they go on to get their HEA and the way Eli loves those little girls… and that epilogue 🫠🥰

This book was incredible, the story completely captivated me and I finished reading it in one day and it left me wanting more, I'm definitely going to read the rest of the books, I'm excited.

It's an intense, entertaining, spicy, sweet story that keeps you hooked,The plot was wonderful; I loved the tropes of bodyguard, single mom, age difference, and him falling harder,And this book definitely handles them in an amazing way.

Eli is so protective, loving and loyal. Lydia is brave, strong, and determined.Their love story unfolded naturally, both bringing out the best in each other, trusting one another, becoming a team, a family.

I loved the family scenes and seeing Eli in his role as a protective dad,the ending left me wanting more, but I also found it very beautiful; definitely a book I enjoyed.

When I tell you I have loved this entire series that is an understatement. Each book can be read as a standalone but when you read them all, I'm telling you, it's the whole new level.

Eli and Lydia's story is so captivating. Imagine escaping a violent marriage only to end up with a stalker in your life. Then imagine someone who is there to protect you but winds up bringing more to your life than just protection in all of the best ways.

I love this slow burn aspect of this book because it made it feel more authentic and real. Aleia Kane rights from this area of vulnerability that really draws you in and makes you feel for each of the female characters in her books.

Light is often found in the dark and when it comes to Eli and Lydia, that's never been more true. This was a 5 star read for me and I highly recommend you read the entire series.

I received a copy of this for my honest review

Our FMC has escaped an abusive husband and is now a single mom to 3 young girls. Her friends have recently found their forever partners with fairly dangerous men, and she wonders if she will ever want that again. Our MMC works as protection for The Kings in Columbus (said dangerous men), and one night while watching our FMC and her friends he tries to step in when a member of a rival family shows our FMC attention. He knows he is dangerous, but she wants to feel something. Except when his attention turns to a need for control, our MMC is tasked to protect her. She may not be in the family, but she is now a target. He knows this is more than a job - and he will lay down his life to make sure she is safe.

Looking for your next obsession? Well, look no further, King Of Rebuke is for you.

The tension is at a constant simmer.

The undeniable chemistry is palpable.

The line between protecting and possessing is blurred, but not crossed.

It’s both dangerous and beautiful.

It’s everything a dark romance could ever hope to be.

Eli is a brooding mafia bodyguard who brings new meaning to the strong, silent type. Lydia is running from an abusive ex with her three daughters, yet she’s still full of sunshine and resilience. Both of them are protectors. Both are having feelings they shouldn’t.

And when the “f***-it” moment happens…

It changes everything!

I received an advanced copy. This is my honest and voluntary review.

This story is so dang good. Loved the grumpy sunshine, age gap, bodyguard, forced proximity and dark mafia romance components of this book. I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of this. Eli and Lydia were such a lovely pairing. These two came across as authentic and real. I really liked how they were with each other. And the storyline is very well written laying out a foundation that is built upon throughout. From one page to the next I was on the edge of my seat turning the pages because I needed more of the story. I couldn't put this down. And I can't recommend reading this more than enough it's a must read.
