Do you know how incredible this author is??? Do you know how magnificently compelling his books are??? You'd agree with me if you've read any JMD Reid books...That was another unbelievably outstanding book!!! I'm gobsmacked! Everything about this book "fits" just right, like a perfectly tailored outfit! What a plot! What stunning characters! All the characters are wonderfully well rounded, all of them so well described, I feel them, see them, know them. Every character is pertinent to the storyline, each ones role and view so clearly defined. I'm LOVING this series!

Once more the prologue sets the stage, vividly, once more I get lost the moment I start reading a JMD Reid book. Being trapped in an arc for centuries, the inhabitants finally get the go ahead to leave it and enter into the real world, a world of sunshine, plants, trees, nature itself. The awe that emanates from Nightslayer is so real, I feel as though it's my first time witnessing sunshine, flora and fauna. But heck, THAT'S the majesty of this authors supreme talent, his descriptive, vivid, awesome storytelling! I don't think I could have felt more pain had I been run through with a sword reading the first chapter. This full cast, all took a slice of me, yes, there are numerous players but each one vital, each one elevating the story to magnificent heights. The happenings are copious and always apposite, clear in motive, deadly in the execution.

A battle has been won against the Empire and our heros are licking their wounds, amidst elation, for the war is yet to come...Not only is the Empire hellbent to eradicate them, mainly they're out to get Zhaid, but Jhathais has assassins after him too. Which leads to a rather rash decision. Oh my gosh was this journey and the events that transpired mindboggling! All the dragons are now awake, each one has found their knight. But the biggest suprise was Sword, who, for some unknown reason, bonded with Kizssa. The sworn enemy to our heroes, with a loathing for dragons. Kizssa is another in a long line of very potent characters. Most of her adult life has been in service to the emperor, she BELIEVED everything he said, she BELIEVED dragons were evil. And now, well...now that's she's bonded to a dragon she's mighty confused and distressed. The scenes when she realised the lies she'd been fed, the lies she'd accepted without question, her confusion, her disbelief, blinded by duty, oblivious to the evil, the magnitude at the atrocities she's committed under falsehoods come crashing down on her, I swear I could taste her anguish. As this statement aptly says "You're so lost. You believe being a Knight Draconic is wrong, you feel guilty for serving the Empire even though you believed what you were doing was right". I loved the "transformation" of Kizssa, who sees the error of her prior convictions. Gosh, but it isn't just Kizssa who suffers anxiety, it all of them! James paints a picture like no other....the guilt is taking over everyone! The snippets of the past threaten to unravel them. So many mistakes made, so many assumptions made, so many convictions shattered. They all learn very quickly, "When a pebble falls in the pond, there are ripples. No matter how benign the act, there are always consequences" and there are!

I was completely and utterly distraught at Naich's past, what he had to endure is beyond horrific! And at the hands of one who should be the protector, not the torturer. The depth of Naich's depravity shaped him into what he is, the details of which made me cry, real tears cry, and gave me an understanding of him on a whole new level. This is just one of the abilities this author possesses, he can reduce me to tears through his prose, and he does, a lot! The author intersperses the anguish with the delight, there's always a thread of hope, a light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how bleak it seems. Yami is one such delight, her innocence and liveliness, she's so exuberant, she always makes me smile, adding a lightness to an otherwise darker read, complimented superbly by the gregarious Bark. As does Joyful, he's lively, lighthearted, vivacious, always, well, joyful. I just adore him! The turmoil all the characters experience is ultra realistic, their insecurities are steeped in realism. I love how well rounded all the characters are and geez, James is just a master world builder and storyteller!

The pacing couldn't be more perfect, his story is so incredibly immersive, he has me rooting for all of them! Every. Single. One. This book is SO emotionally charged! I really enjoyed how James didn't play favourites, he dedicated section by section, giving each of the players equal attention and a deeper insight into them. They ALL tugged at my heartstrings, even Kizssa, who I really loathed at the beginning. They are all magnificent characters, I loved each and every one. And the dramatic and vicious action, my word, riveting! When they were fighting the many enemies coming at them, my heart was in my throat! I adore how James balances them out, every single one is grey, every single one is neither good nor bad, and he shows that impeccably. Although...Paz is a real tw*t, a fabulous depiction of a self serving moron! James tackles trauma, real issues, real insecurities, very sensitivity, compassionately, but never skirting around, delivering them with a powerful stroke of his pen. Like Yhleni's self preservation mode of denial at what she had done, so extremely well delivered and plausible and just so real! I also adore the dragons, full characters themselves, and how they interact with their knights, their bonds firming every step of the way. They are uniquely different, both their temperaments and their abilities, exceptional depiction!

I guess it's silly to tell you how immersive this read is, how much I loved this book, I'm sure it's crystal clear from my review, but SHOOT! I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!The world building was fantastic, as usual, I get to experience absolutely everything, from a single blade of grass, to the complexity of coursing emotions running rampant through them all. I found my heart pumping from the action, so so much tension, I thought I was going to shatter like the crystals! What I do love is that I can never be complacent, I can expect the unexpected, constantly. And heck did James get me, real good! Jaw dropping, disbelief, the whole bang shoot! I'm in awe, I'm in shock, I'm stunned, I'm devastated, I'm in pain, I'm elated, I'm full of every emotion on the planet... just read this series already!

his is another case of me picking up one of Author Reid's book with excitement and knowing a grand read is again. Spark’s Knight did it again!

The war against the Empire rages on, battles are won and wounds are licked, but danger is everywhere. Assassins, more dragons awakening to bond with their knights, and the Empire wants to destry things. There are huge surprises in store including making characters reconsider biases.

There are character and tension highs and lows throughout and Reid gives each of them their moment through multiple PoVs, heart‑pounding action, and emotional depth. The dragons themselves shine as full characters, each unique in temperament and ability.
