Divine Sight

Rate this book
There are many things in this world the average person cannot see…but a chosen few can. Such is the case with Lala, the five-year-old Mexican-American child at the heart of this unique coming-of-age novel.

Divine Sight finds Lala at a critical point in her life, where she is learning how to deal with the different perspectives of her multicultural, multigenerational family and coming to terms with her sixth sense of second sight. Set in the 1950s and spanning both the United States and Mexico, the story is told through a series of vignettes written in Lala’s voice. Each chapter casts Lala against a challenging situation and shows how she, with the aid of her family members and otherworldly allies, works to overcome it and becomes more comfortable in her own skin—as a medium between two worlds and two cultures.

A truly touching and thoughtful tome, Divine Sight explores many common, and uncommon, themes from an encouraging and empowering angle. It speaks volumes about cultural and spiritual understanding and tells a tale of hope and helpfulness that’s sure to appeal to open-minded readers who want to better understand and appreciate life’s many marvels.

About the author

Eduarda Amondragon

Eduarda Amondragon is a proud practitioner of la vida loca. Roughly translated, she lives “the crazy life,” but to her, and anyone else familiar with the phrase, it means much more.

Amondragon takes time to appreciate the beauty of our world, both seen and unseen. She firmly believes that there is far more good in the world than evil, far more pleasure than pain, and that magic and mystery are all around us, just waiting to be found.

Like Lala, the main character in her debut book, Divine Sight, Amondragon has faith in the supernatural and surreal and was heavily influenced by her multicultural upbringing. Raised between California and Mexico, she also learned many of life’s most important lessons from her grandparents.

Amondragon currently lives in Phoenix, Arizona, where she enjoys life with her angel, Miguelito, and is surrounded by her beautiful children and grandchildren.

The writing in this wasn't the best, it was slow in several parts, and a lot of the religious aspects were confusing and questionable. I did however enjoy the cultural aspects of this and thought that the main character, Lala's voice was very strong and accurate for a five year old. It was very interesting hearing the different cultural things about this Mexican American family.

as the grandson of the author, going into it, it was definitely different from what i expected, but was still enjoyable. most of the book read more like a memoir or a series of short stories with some common elements linking some of the stories together, rather than a traditional fictional book with a plot. the book kinda starts to have some sort of plot towards the end, but it still reads more like a memoir than anything. however, i think the actual content and writing of the book is pretty good. i do think the things that i find enjoyable and the average person finds enjoyable since it's from a family member and we have a personal connection, i think there are somethings that people can enjoy reading about as well, regardless of if they know the author. most of the scenes are interesting to read about are pretty well thought out and visualized well. while some may not enjoy it that much, i do think there is somethings that people can enjoy reading about in this book.

The book was not what I expected at all. The little girl told a cute story but that was about it. It didn't show much about her visions at all.
