The Rebound Rule by Zoe Dunn.
Like every other Zoe Dunn book, I’ve read this book enthralled me from the very beginning and refused to let me go till I read the very last word. I found the Rebound rule to be this emotional, intense, and so addictive that I kept telling myself just one more chapter till suddenly I found myself almost finished the book.
Emmerson’s story hit me right in the gut and I found myself able to feel exactly what she was feeling. I went through what she went through. I knew her fear, her exhaustion, and that bone deep need to feel safe and in control of your life again. And just like I did, I loved watching Emmerson take her life back and rebuild herself and everything that she went through felt so perfectly real and raw. And I found myself just wanting to crawl into the pages, wrap her in my arms and protect her, and other moments I was cheering her on, especially as you can see her getting stronger page by page chapter by chapter.
Ryan Reeves..this man is just wow, and he’s honestly everything that you want in the typical playboy “bad boy with a heart” trope. When we first meet him, he starts off as your typical cocky, charming playboy, but you can see that underneath all that is someone who will show up when it matters the most. And I fell in love with him when I watched the way he would protect Emmerson. And I loved the way in which he protected her, he never once tried to control her or “fix” her, that just melted my heart. Ryan allows Emmerson to find her own strength while offering to be Emmerson’s safe place and I loved just how beautiful that balance was.
The tension between Ryan and Emmerson was so stunning. Zoe built it up in such a way that felt so perfectly natural and yet you still get all those butterflies along with the emotional pull. And when things start to undeniably unfold, you find that it’s both swoon worthy and so very deeply meaningful and it’s all because of everything Emmerson herself has been through.
Zoe did an amazing job in handling this story’s themes of healing. She never rushes it or glosses over it. She allows us to see all the messy parts that comes with healing, the fear, setbacks, and the courage it takes the choose yourself over and over again. I found that this alone added so much additional depth to the romance and this made the connection between Emmerson and Ryan feel even more powerful.
If you are a fan of hockey romance’s, a protective but respectful MMC, a story where the FMC finds her own strength, then The Rebound Rules is one that you need to pick up and read or at least put on your TBR ASAP. This is such a beautiful, emotional, empowering, full of heart story. I highly recommend it. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars.
And I have to say thank you to Zoe Dunn for not trying to write an epilogue giving us this perfect picture where everything is perfect and just falls perfectly into place and you get the white picket fence, a dog, marriage and a baby. That’s not the epilogue this book needed or should have gotten. So, thank you Zoe, for ending this book where you did and the way you did. That was the perfect ending for the themes you had in this book.
The Rebound Rule by Zoe Dunn is one of those rare romances that manages to be both incredibly heavy and beautifully hopeful all at once. Going into this, I was not entirely sure what to expect because this was my first time reading anything by Zoe Dunn, but I can officially say I am hooked. Her writing has a way of pulling you in from the very first chapter and making you feel every ounce of the characters' emotions.
This is not just a "hockey romance” it is a story about the grueling, messy, and ultimately rewarding process of reclaiming your life. Emmerson’s journey of escaping a toxic past and trying to find her footing again felt so raw and authentic. Her vulnerability was palpable but seeing her slowly rediscover her own strength while reconnecting with her twin brother, Lincoln, was easily one of the most moving parts of the book.
Then there’s Ryan Reeves. He starts off with that typical "playboy" reputation, but the depth Zoe gives him is fantastic. The way he interacts with Emmerson, offering her a safe space and a level of patience that she has never known, was managed with so much care. Their connection does not feel rushed or forced; it is built on a foundation of genuine trust and mutual healing that made me root for them every step of the way.
The balance between the intense, emotional themes of domestic recovery and the sweet, protective nature of the romance was done perfectly. It is a powerful reminder that while healing is not a straight line, having the right people in your corner makes all the difference. I am already looking for what else Zoe Dunn has written because if her other stories are half as impactful as this one, I have found a new favorite author.
If you enjoy a romance with real emotional weight, a hero who knows how to be truly supportive, and a heroine who finds her power again, you need to add this to your TBR. Just be prepared for a bit of a heart-squeeze along the way!
A huge thank you Zoe Dunn and Twisted Chaos PR for this ARC.
This book completely pulled me in and did not let go. The Rebound Rule was emotional, intense, and honestly so addictive that I kept telling myself just one more chapter and suddenly I was halfway through the book.
Emmerson’s story hit me right in the heart. You can feel her fear, her exhaustion, and that deep need to just feel safe again. Watching her rebuild herself after everything she went through felt so real and raw. There were moments where I just wanted to hug her and others where I was cheering her on because you can actually see her strength growing page by page.
And Ryan Reeves… wow. He is everything you want in that “bad boy with a heart” trope. He starts off as that cocky, charming playboy but underneath all of that is someone who shows up when it matters most. The way he supports Emmerson without trying to control her or fix her completely melted me. He lets her find her own strength while still being her safe place and that balance was done so beautifully.
The tension between them is so good. It builds in a way that feels natural but still gives you all those butterflies and that emotional pull. And when things finally start to unfold, it is both swoony and deeply meaningful because of everything Emmerson has been through.
What really stood out to me was how this story handled healing. It is not rushed or glossed over. It shows the messy parts, the fear, the setbacks, and the courage it takes to choose yourself again. That added so much depth to the romance and made their connection feel even more powerful.
If you love hockey romance, protective but respectful MMCs, and stories where the heroine truly finds her strength, this is absolutely one you need to pick up. It is emotional, empowering, and full of heart. Easy five stars for me.
This is not your average smutty hockey book. its so much more! from the very beginning it grabs you, draws you in and make you feel all the feels. When I say I couldn't put this down I mean it. If my kids didnt have soccer practice and all yhe things I would have finished it in 1 sitting!
Emmerson is running from her abusing boyfriend of 7 years. She finally breaks the barrier and calls her twin brother, Lincoln, that Maverick made her cut out of her life. When he answers after so many years of silence she takes it as her sign to run and not look back. She leaves everything behind and just goes across the country to where he is playing in the NHL for the Seattle Kraken.
Lincoln’s best friend is the Kraken "party boy". But really he is trying to cope with walking in on his long time partner sleeping with her coworker, in the house he built for them. He ends up living with Linc amd at first thinks Emmerson is just another puck bunny.
Slowly but surely they both start healing eachother without realizing it at first. They seem to be exactly what the other needed. He becomes her safe and calm. She becomes his reason to slow down.
The way this was written was so amazing! Had me holding my breath some times becuase i was terrified of the outcome! but they get their well deserved HEA

The Rebound Rule by Zoe Dunn is one of those stories that quietly sneaks up on you and then refuses to let go. Emmerson and Ryan’s relationship isn’t built on instant sparks or over-the-top drama—it’s rooted in something deeper: quiet trust, genuine friendship, and a level of respect that feels so real it almost hurts.
Emmerson hasn’t had an easy road these past eight years, and you feel the weight of that in every chapter. When she reaches out to her twin brother, hoping to rebuild just one piece of her life, she ends up finding so much more than she expected. What unfolds is a beautiful found family—friends who don’t just support her, but truly see her and understand what she’s been through. And honestly, that part of the story hit just as hard as the romance.
Ryan is exactly what Emmerson needs, even when she doesn’t realize it at first. Their connection builds slowly and naturally, grounded in patience and care, and it made every small moment between them feel significant.
I spent this entire book waiting for the other shoe to drop, holding my breath and hoping Emmerson would finally get the peace and happiness she deserves. That sense of anticipation added such an emotional edge to the story and made her journey of healing feel even more powerful.
I absolutely loved this one. It’s soft where it needs to be, heavy when it matters, and ultimately full of hope.
I honestly don’t even know where to start because I loved everything about this book. Hockey? Check. Brother’s best friend? Check. A protective yet patient MMC? Absolutely. The chemistry between the MMC and FMC is undeniable—they’re genuinely adorable together—and the slow build of tension was just perfect.
That said, this story does explore some heavy, hard-hitting themes, including domestic violence, so be mindful of triggers. The author handles these elements with care and intention, never sugarcoating the reality while still telling a deeply moving and meaningful story.
Now let’s talk about our MMC… Ryan.
“It made me want to tuck her away somewhere safe while I slayed every single one of her demons.”
😭🫶 Sweet Ryan. I completely fell for his kind, steady heart. What really stood out was how he learned to show up for Em in the way she needed—not how he thought she should be supported, but how she actually needed it. His patience, his understanding, and his quiet commitment to being her calm and her safe place (sometimes before she even realized it herself) made their relationship feel so genuine and special.
Their love story was beautifully done, and I truly adored watching it unfold.
Zoe Dunn absolutely nailed this one. It’s an emotional read, no doubt, but it’s so worth it.
Quite the story. It’s well-paced with some good character development. Even though a lot has been told, I have a feeling that there is still so much left to learn about Lincoln and Nina. So I hope that there will be written a story about them and their life.
But back to The Rebound rule. I thought that I would be reading a semi-lighthearted story with a lot of spice, but it’s better than that. There is spice. There is. But not written just to have it in the book. It has reason and is e real part of the development of characters.
If you are a victim of abuse or sensitive to the subject, I’d recommend to skip this book. It’s written in a way that it hits the reader. I was worried about the characters, I felt the tension and was waiting for the other shoe to drop.
And, dear Zoe Dunn, THANK YOU! for not writing an epilogue where it is all about the so called picture perfect where everything has to be in place (white fence, dog, marriage and a baby). Thank you for ending the story where you did.
Thank you for the ARC in his purest way. I loved it. I loved the characters, I loved the pace, I loved the world building. I was sitting on the edge of my seat. It was romance with a bit of psychological thriller.
From the very first pages, this book had me completely wrecked — I’m talking reaching for the tissue box more times than I can count.
As a DV survivor, this story hit especially close to home. Zoe Dunn does not shy away from the heavy, real, and often painful realities our FMC faces, so please, please check the trigger warnings before diving in. That said, the way this story is handled is both powerful and deeply moving.
I don’t know that I have the perfect words to fully capture everything I’m feeling after finishing this, but Emmerson’s journey is one that will stay with me. Watching her slowly rebuild herself, rediscover her strength, and learn to trust again was incredibly emotional and beautifully written. Her growth felt real, messy, and ultimately empowering.
And Ryan… he was exactly what she needed without ever overshadowing her journey. Their connection felt natural, supportive, and genuine. The romance was there, but it never took away from the heart of the story — it enhanced it.
Zoe truly outdid herself with this one. It’s raw, emotional, and unforgettable. Just make sure you have tissues nearby… you’re going to need them.
How this Author manages to immediately have me in a chokehold with her books is an art form. This book had me in all my feels. The FMC, Emmerson is a total sweetheart that has been through it. She's a survivor in more ways than one. But despite everything she still has a heart of gold and more than anything deserves her HEA. Our MMC, Ryan is a walking talking hockey god and playboy...or so it seems. He's got some baggage from his previous relationship and is just trying to survive. These two have a very unique first encounter. But they quickly realize that there is some undeniable chemistry and a connection that runs deep. Add in the dynamic that it is her brother's roommate/teammate and his best friend's little sister. There's some sneaking around. Some absolutely swoon worthy sweetness. And enough spice that would melt an entire hockey rink! It had me in my feels...but it was totally worth it! If you love when an FMC reclaims her power, when a playboy falls fast and hard, and little bit of hockey in your romance... than this a must read!
Ryan and Emerson’s initial meeting was…. not good… After escaping an abusive ex, to have your brother’s roommate compare you to a puck bunny, assume you were sleeping with your brother and then put the moves on, directly after meeting her was pretty confronting. But as the story progressed, Ryan’s playboy mentality (his coping mechanism) slowly evolved and they had a lovely start to a friendship, before it becomes something more. He was so supportive and sweet, and I loved seeing their relationship grow. The support of all the people aroudn them was great, and even the OW drama was managed well… The big win for me is no third-act breakup!
“You were never not enough, Em. You were just waiting for the right person to notice.”
A tough, emotional, heartfelt and occasionally funny journey of finding your own strength, healing and second chances.
The Rebound Rule by Zoe Dunn is an emotional, addictive read that kept me hooked from beginning to end.
Emmerson’s story is heartbreaking but powerful. After escaping an abusive ex-fiancé, she runs to her brother for safety and tries to rebuild her life from scratch. I really felt for her throughout the story—her fear, her vulnerability, and the way she slowly starts finding her strength again were written in a very real and moving way.
Ryan, her brother’s NHL roommate, is the perfect mix of cocky playboy and unexpectedly protective hero. Their chemistry is strong right away, but what I loved most was how patient and steady he is with her as she learns to trust again. Their relationship felt emotional, supportive, and not rushed.
There’s also a constant tension from her past that keeps the stakes high and makes the story even more gripping.
If you enjoy hockey romance, forced proximity, protective heroes, and a heroine healing while finding love again, this is absolutely worth the read.
This book absolutely shattered me and put me back together again. I was left with scars on my soul but a full heart. This is not the typical hockey romance novel at all. And I loved every single second of this book. From the very first line I was invested in Emerson’s story and everything that came along with her re-establishing herself. And the more I learned about Ryan the more I loved him and respected him. Emerson is such a strong character - to be able to walk away from everything is a feat so many could never accomplish. And I admired her determination to stand on her own feet. Watching the connections she develops with Ryan and reinforces with Lincoln was so endearing. Seeing the healing and growth that comes out of Emerson and Ryan’s relationship repaired some of the emotional damage I had from what all they went through. The progression of everything is so real and genuine. Everything felt significant and moments were so raw. I just wanted Emerson and Ryan to get the peace and happiness they both deserved so much. And the ending we got left me feeling exhausted but happy.
I honestly don’t know where to start with this one. The main characters are so beautifully written, Emerson is a complex FMC learning how to rebuild her life after a traumatic DV relationship, while Ryan is navigating the aftermath of his own past and approaches it with emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and genuine empathy.
Their relationship thoughtfully captures the nuances of their individual experiences, never sacrificing character growth or plot development in favour of rushing the romance; because of this, their connection feels authentic and deeply earned.
This story is heavy, devastating, and at times heartbreaking, yet it still weaves in lighthearted moments that feel natural rather than forced, adding balance without diminishing the emotional impact.
Overall, this was a beautifully written emotional story but would definitely suggest check your triggers before picking this on up
I received an ARC of this book, all thoughts and opinions are my own
ARC review A story of healing from abuse and rebuilding a life. The book follows Emmerson who just escaped an abusive relationship and knocks on her brothers, Lincoln, door after not speaking to him for years. Lincoln lives together with his roommate Ryan. Emmerson and Ryan slowly build up a relationship while Emmerson works on rebuilding her own life. Emmerson's journey of reclaiming her independence is raw and believable. The way she reclaims her life is admirable. I love how Ryan is so patience, but he is almost to patience. It is like a flipped switch how he went to his golden retriever status. Lincoln is a strong side character, his own troubles with the panic attacks feel real. I enjoyed reading this story, but it felt a bit to polished at times. Some more setbacks or internal problems would have added a layer to the book.
Emmerson is on the run, and winds up at her twin brother's house - the one she hasn't seen in seven years. Recovering from abuse, she tries to heal while learning how to find her confidence again. Her brother's roommate, Ryan, goes a long way to making her feel safe. But soon enough, feelings develop. Can they both heal enough to move forward?
This was an emotional and rewarding read, filled with healing and hope. I appreciated the author's delicate treatment of Emmerson's past trauma, and how the ripples of past events bled through today. Ryan was everything you could want in an MMC - patient, kind, and everything she needed to step forward. This read is not light-hearted, but it is definitely worth it to get to the HEA.
I recommend this if you enjoy emotional and healing reads, protective but not overbearing MMCs, and FMCs with far more strength than they realize.
What a great book!! This book was something very near and dear to my heart! Zoe was able to accurately depiction of DV. I LOVED the depth of this book and each character. Ryan is Emerson’s brothers best friend and teammate. When Emerson needs a place to stay she moves in with her brother and Ryan. Emerson is skittish with any interaction she has. Ryan shows patience and holds a calm demeanor throughout gaining her trust. Ryan recently is going through his own interpersonal issues and finds comfort in Emerson! I loved every second of this book and can’t wait to read more books of Zoe’s!
Tropes: Brothers best friend Brothers teammate DV Self growth/discovery
As someone who loves a good hockey romance this one really worked for me. If you're looking for "spice" it's there, but minimally.
Em and Ryan’s relationship was so solid and genuinely admirable. Their connection builds in a way that makes you root for them the whole time and after everything Em goes through its nice to see her come out of it all happy and stronger!
Nina was easily my favorite character. She’s the definition of a ride-or-die friend and I loved how fiercely loyal she was throughout the story. I also found it refreshing to see anxiety represented in a way that felt real without overshadowing everything else.
Emmerson needed a fresh start after everything she had been through with her ex. Now she has reconnected with her brother and is living with him and his best friend, Ryan. Throughout her time living there, you can see all of the things Ryan does to make her feel more comfortable and help her through her healing process. He was such a great person for her to have in her corner. He had a reputation, but she saw the real Ryan that he hides from others. I loved seeing these two connect on a deeper level and become friends before becoming something more.
This was a great book! It has a hard subject of abuse but was handled very well in the book. You feel all the emotions of the characters as you were there in the room. You fall in love with each of them as individuals. The love and strength they provide each other is amazing. The anxiety is so real. I feel for Lincoln and all of his fears. Ryan and all of his patience and research is so sweet. Emmerson comes a long way to become strong again.
I loved the story. The characters are all fantastic except Maverick. This is my first book by this author but I will be checking out others.
Emmerson hasn’t talked to her twin brother in years. But when she reached out for help leaving her bf he was there for her. He offers to let her stay and lets her know he has a roommate- Ryan. Ryan immediately is pulled to her and wants to do whatever so she feels safe. Emmerson had heard about Ryan for years from her ex and how violent he was on the ice so at first she was a little taken aback when she met him but then she started spending time with him and realized that’s not how he is at all. Yes on the ice he might get into a few fights but that’s kinda his job. I truly loved watching the two of them work through their feelings and grow together. Wonderful hockey romance!
“You fought for your peace. You fought for your happiness and somewhere in all that, you still found room for me.”
Emerson had to go through hell so she could find her strength and she found it in Ryan. Ryan is proof you can turn a bad boy into a golden retriever. The way he researched, made notes and talked with DV Advocates just so he didn’t add to Emerson’s trauma showed where his heart truly was.
This book describes a lot of self-help steps for anyone who is overcoming a DV situation or who suffers from anxiety/panic attacks via either therapy support or the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 technique.
If you find someone who believes a friendship is like “two socks in a dryer”, they’re a keeper.
That is what this story meant to me. It’s not easy to heal but if you have the right person standing beside you, it helps. Knowing that all you need to do is take it one day at a time or one breath at a time, you will get there.
The story between Emmerson and Ryan is inspiring to know, that not every person that comes into your life, wants to hurt you. Some just want to show you, that you are enough and worth it.
This was such a great story with Emmy and Ryan. I loved the depth, the added emotional traumas, support, found family, and finding the strength to stand up for yourself. Emmy ran from an abusive situation and mixed in with her brother. I loved the support she got from his roommate, Ryan. The two connected so well. I enjoyed their relationship and the way it bloomed. But I loved seeing the growth that Emmy made as well. This was such a great story with beauty and wonderful moments.
I liked how this book was able to be incredibly deep and heavy, while being a beautiful love story at the same time. I think the MMC was patient and kind and gorgeous and sexy 🤣
I enjoyed how healing was viewed in this book. It is rare that a book does not only show the good and fun parts, but this book showed all the mess and sadness that comes with healing too.
This book was written with a trauma lens that was done so perfectly. More than the romance though, the found family was incredible. I loved this book from start to finish. The healing done within the pages was so special. The love was special, the love story and patience, all of it. Loved it! Rounded up half point.
A hard review to write on one hand it was a good story about healing and surviving and on the other hand it was eye opening to the fact that stuff like this still goes on. That being said it had heavy moments but also has fun moments too like when link was telling story’s about Ryan (the seal and hamster), the journey Emmerson went through and how Ryan and Nina helped her was really well done.
Great story about trauma and surviving and coming out better on the other end. Enjoyed the story and connected with the characters. Em and Ryan each had to find their way thru the trauma of their pasts and find a way to be together. Banter was good and liked the back stories. Hope that Linc gets his own story.
Such a great book, full of feelings, battles and friends who are more like family. I love how the author didn't shy away from difficult topics and normalised anxiety and seeking support. Emmy and Ryan's story is so special and her bond with her twin Linc is so lush.
Such a sweet wholesome book. The relationship that builds in the midst of what was going on is beautiful. The ending had my heart thumping and I was tearing up, and the very end was perfect🥰
This book was well written but I did find some of the chapters to be really long and really repetitive.
I enjoyed that it actually had sport on in the book and didn't just use that as a backstory concept like other books I have read which are classed as a sports romance.
It was a cute healing story with new relationships blossoming, for me there was not enough spice I need more information on the sexual tension but that is just me.
I received an advanced copy of this book and am giving this review voluntarily.
