Finding Solace - A Domestic Crime Noir Psychological Thriller.

Lies beget lies and the secrets they hide.
Bella and Leigh are like any family looking to IVF to help conceive their second child - desperate. But as Leigh looks into the eyes of their daughter Lexi, he is oblivious of the secret they hold. A secret the 'good' Dr Henry Barnham discovers and has no issue exploiting. Fearful of losing the family she has, Bella agrees to Henry's outrageous proposal. But will making a deal beyond Bella’s comprehension to protect her greatest secret have more consequences than even she can fathom?
Henry has his own secret. Past indiscretions and neglect that previous feeble attempts to make up for have proven unsuccessful. This plan has to work. He now has the one thing he knows Grace will not refuse.
Two women’s lives are intertwined by a series of lies and secrets, that if revealed will shatter the very fabric of their lives.
But that’s only one side of the story. One perspective. There is always another. Possibly more.
How far would you go to protect your secrets and the ones you love?

Exploring the impact of infertility, family relationships, secrets, and the power dynamics between doctor and patience, Finding Solace, dives into the human condition and doesn't shy away from the darker side of humanity. If you enjoy domestic noir, domestic thrillers like The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth and A Beautiful Couple by Leslie Wolfe, or the darkness of psychological thrillers like The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides you might want to read Finding Solace.

TRIGGER WARNINGS - in addition to the above, Finding Solace also navigates the impacts of psychological and sexual abuse, coercive control, mental health, drug and suicidal themes. Reader discretion is advised.

I was given this book as an ARC by April May, and really enjoyed it (4.5/5).

Finding Solace follows Bella, a young woman tormented by mental health issues, married to Leigh and mother to Lexi.

Struggling to conceive a second child, they undergo IVF. Burdened by a secret from the past, Bella confides in her psychologist. Unfortunately, Dr Barnham has a plan of his own and manipulates Bella to help him achieve his goal.

Seeing no way out, and to protect her family, she begins a journey away from those who love her, under control of a sadistic man.

The relationship between Bella and Dr Barnham is at times very intense and I often felt like punching this manipulative man who could only see ‘good’ in his actions. Like he was the saviour to all involved.

The vast majority is viewed from Bella’s experience. Her tormented thoughts, feelings of being inadequate and undeserving, being controlled and abused,… as a reader, I really felt close to her.

Then different perspectives are given which complete the overall picture.

I had several moments where my mouth fell open in shock. Others, especially near the ending, left me in tears.

I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to those who enjoy noir crime stories.

Please, read the triggers as some scenes could be intense. I think of infertility, psychological and sexual abuse, mental health, drug abuse and suicidal themes.

DNF @ 50%. I had to drag myself to halfway before giving up, this was awful.

This book is awful. Not dark-awful, just boring-awful.

Nothing happens except the same thoughts on repeat. Endless internal monologue, zero escalation, zero payoff. It confuses repetition with depth and trauma with plot..

Also the grammar is genuinely bad. Clunky sentences, awkward phrasing, sloppy editing. It constantly pulled me out of the story and made an already dull book even harder to tolerate.
