Stories are synonymous with nostalgia. To read or listen to a story is to go back in time when you would be sitting snuggled up in a quilt, listening to your grandmother telling you tales of seven wonders or Alibaba. Rarely are any kids who haven't heard of these names. Those who read these stories as children often go back to them, returning to seek not only the stories but their own childhood too.' The Mystery of the Haunted Tree' by Apoorva Sharma transports you back to those times.

So what is it about? In a small village in Rajasthan, everything is well as it should be in a small village but there is just one catch. Like most of the villages, it too has a haunted tree. And it happens to stand upon the route that's also a short cut to the school. But kids are prohibited to take it, well, because of the haunted tree. One day, a band of friends who call themselves The Fantastic Five decide to uncover the mystery of the haunted tree. What happens then? Is really there a ghost? Or is it just a figment of villagers' collective imagination. And what happen to the kids? So they succeed in their mission? Or fail because who can fight a ghost? Well, I am not going to tell you everything here. Pick up the book to find out more.

Sharma has written the book in a way that it's appealing to adults and not just kids. She has peppered the story with humour. Have a look:
"Oh no," Bunty groaned, "not this way again."
"Think about it," Aarav said, sitting up straighter.
"If we prove the tree isn't haunted, we can use the shortcut. If we use the shortcut, we save more than an hour every day. That's 30 extra minutes of sleep in the morning and 30 more in the evening!"
"That's... math I like," Rohan nodded."

The story carries as much nostalgia as the entertainment. Packed in a cute little book bundle, this is a terrific treat you can gift to your little ones this year. Introducing your young ones to the wondrous world of stories was never this easy. Told in beautiful, flowing prose, this book will enthrall your kids to no end.
Supported by eye-catching illustrations, the book not only makes for good bedtime stories but also for entertaining school reading sessions. I can easily see this book becoming part of kid's libraries all over the country. Sharma keeps a sense of adventure up during all the time. Have a look:
"For years, they had heard stories. Whispers of glowing cyes and eerie music. Warnings passed down like bedtime tales. But never had anyone tried to actually find the truth?.Maybe it was the heat. Maybe it was the boredom. Or maybe it was just that mix of curiosity and courage that only children seem to carry. That afternoon, the Fantastic Five made a silent decision-one that didn't need a vote or a show of hands. It was written in their eyes and the way they leaned in closer, as Aarav began outlining a rough plan on a piece of paper stained with mango pickle."

There are some stories whose charm isn't limited to the readers they are originally aimed at. And I strongly believe that sometimes all of us can learn some or the other thing from the tales we often brand as kiddie stories. There is something here for everyone. Sometimes it will make you laugh out loud, sometimes it will leave you with just the right amount of philosophy. Being true to the name of the book, Sharma keeps the spooky element up. Read this:

"They reached the spot where the tree came into view-and suddenly, everything felt still.
No wind. No sound. Just them... and the tree.
It stood tall, darker than night, its branches stretched wide like arms caught mid-scream. The bark looked rougher. Older. And somehow, angrier.
No one spoke.
Until Rohan whispered,"It looks... bigger at night.'
"I think it's breathing," Bunty said."

Go on. Pick it up and dive into your childhood once again.

Book Review: The Quaint Fear of Sambhar Village
The Mystery of the Haunted Tree by Apoorva Sharma
Rajasthan is a land rich in history and folklore, a place where legends of forts like Bhangarh and abandoned villages like Kuldhara still hold sway over the imagination. Author Apoorva Sharma beautifully taps into this atmosphere, moving past the grand narratives to focus on a quieter, yet equally compelling, mystery in the quaint village of Sambhar.
At the heart of Sambhar lies the central focus of this novella: a spectral fixture known only as the "Bhotwala ped"—the haunted tree. To the casual visitor, it is just an ancient sentinel, its roots sprawling, its branches reaching out like skeletal arms against the sky. But to the villagers, it’s a living monument to fear, a place where generations have been scared by sightings of a ghost singing creepy lullabies and echoes of laughter in the dead of night. It is said that no bird ever dares to perch on its mysterious limbs.
The Fantastic Five's Bold Expedition
Amidst this lingering fear is where Apoorva Sharma introduces us to the Fantastic Five, a group of five children whose boundless curiosity simply won't let a mystery lie. Convinced that the "Bhotwala ped" is just an old wives' tale, they embark on a bold expedition to prove the tree is not haunted.
The narrative, at just 45 pages long, is paced adequately, giving the short story a focused intensity. The author does a commendable job of making the reader immediately invested in the characters; they are well-etched, and their innocence of childhood and their endearing antics are guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
The story truly gains momentum when the Fantastic Five falter during their first expedition but bravely regroup to try again. This second attempt leads them to find something unusual. Did they encounter the spectral resident, or did they discover a rational explanation hiding beneath the folklore? I won't spoil the reveal, but Sharma manages to keep the pages turning with a genuine sense of childlike wonder and suspense.
Verdict
The Mystery of the Haunted Tree is a short, delightful dive into local folklore, viewed through the lens of childhood adventure. It’s a perfect read for those looking for a quick, feel-good mystery. Apoorva Sharma has crafted a charming piece that proves sometimes the most frightening stories are the ones rooted in the simplest settings.

The Mystery of the Haunted Tree is a delightful children’s adventure that skillfully blends folklore, humor, and friendship into a story that is both engaging and meaningful.

Set in the village of Sambhar, the book draws readers immediately into a familiar yet intriguing world—one where whispered warnings and childhood fears revolve around the ominous Bhootwala Ped, a haunted tree said to guard a forbidden shortcut to school.

One of the book’s strongest first impressions comes from its appealing cover page and lively illustrations. The cover is visually inviting, capturing the playful eeriness of the story without tipping into genuine horror—an important balance for young readers.

The illustrations inside further enrich the narrative, adding warmth, humor, and clarity to the scenes. They are not merely decorative but actively support the storytelling, making the book especially accessible for early and middle-grade readers.

Apoorva Sharma excels at portraying childhood curiosity. The five friends at the heart of the story are believable and relatable; their banter, bravery, and occasional foolishness feel authentic rather than staged.

When they decide to uncover the truth behind the haunted tree, the plot unfolds with a series of midnight escapades, comic blunders, and unexpected discoveries that keep the pacing brisk and entertaining.

In conclusion, The Mystery of the Haunted Tree is a charming, well-illustrated adventure that celebrates friendship, curiosity, and the joy of uncovering truth. With its candid language, humorous twists, and thoughtful message, the book proves that sometimes the scariest stories really do hide the funniest moments—and the brightest treasures.

It is a worthy addition to any child’s bookshelf and an enjoyable read for adults revisiting the magic of childhood imagination.

"The Mystery of the Haunted Tree" by Apoorva Sharma is a fun and exciting story set in the small village of Sambhar.

The villagers are scared of the “Bhootwala Ped,” a tree believed to be haunted, which blocks the shortcut to school.

Five brave friends - Aarav, Riya, Rohan, Chintu, and Bunty - decide to solve the mystery.

As Arthur Conan Doyle wisely said, “The world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observes,” and the children prove this by looking closely at what others are too afraid to question.

What starts as a ghost hunt soon turns into a series of funny and thrilling adventures.

The story is full of humor, friendship, and suspense.

One of the funniest moments is when the children dress up in strange “stealth mode” outfits for their midnight mission.

The simple language and lively dialogues make the book easy and enjoyable to read.

The suspense keeps readers guessing, reminding us of Agatha Christie’s famous words, “The best time to plan a book is while you’re doing the dishes,” as the mystery unfolds through clever clues and unexpected twists.

This book teaches us to be brave, curious, and to question our fears.

It captures the true spirit of adventure, much like Robert Louis Stevenson’s line, “There is no duty we so much underrate as the duty of being happy,” which reflects the joy and excitement the friends find even in dangerous situations.

With cute illustrations and an engaging plot, it is perfect for young readers.

I highly recommend it to every child who loves mystery and adventure stories. Happy Reading, Happy Learning.

There is something deeply nostalgic about the neighborhood mystery, that one local landmark every kid whispered about. It’s a classic trope for a reason. This book captures that magic perfectly.

The story follows the Fantastic Five , a group of village children who are imperfect on their own but complement each other’s strengths. While I loved the nostalgia of the folklore, my daughter was completely hooked on the suspense, constantly asking whether the tree was truly haunted. It’s written in simple, accessible language that makes it perfect for young readers.
In the end, the process of unraveling the mystery is far more powerful than the secret itself. It’s in the seeking that the 'Fantastic Five' truly find themselves, this story bridges the gap between folklore and a child's first step into bravery.

A fantastic read for any child who loves a good mystery.

it took me straight back to those childhood summers filled with urban legends and "forbidden" spots.
Set in a dusty village in Rajasthan, the story follows The Fantastic Five as they try to debunk the myth of the Bhootwala Ped. Is it actually a ghost, or just the wind playing tricks on the Banyan roots? 🧐
I loved the blend of traditional Indian folklore with that classic "Enid Blyton" adventure energy. It’s a quick, nostalgic read that reminds you exactly what it felt like to be ten years old and "brave" enough to take the shortcut home.

Adventurous and engaging for young readers, this book taps perfectly into childhood curiosity. I read this with my 5 year old and it was such a joy seeing her get immersed in the story and keen on knowing what happens next, asking questions, imagining possibilities.
The narrative moves at a pace that is comfortable for kids to grab the story and characters without being overwhelming

What stood out for me was the learning of courage rather than fear which is especially important for young readers to inculcate.
