Clive Staples Lewis was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably one of the most influential writers of his day. He was a Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Oxford University until 1954. He was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement. He wrote more than thirty books, allowing him to reach a vast audience, and his works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year. 1979 and the teacher said, I'm sending this letter home for your parents to let you watch this special coming on TV. That letter changed my life. I watched the cartoon primetime special and fell in love with Aslan, Lucy, and Mr. Tumnus. Imagine my joy in discovering it was a book...Actually a series of books and that this wasn't even the 1st one in the series. I will ALWAYS find time to re-read this book once or twice a year.

Reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as an adult felt completely different from reading it as a child, and I think that is what makes this book so special. It is such a beautiful story, simple on the surface but filled with so much heart, hope, courage, and wonder. There is something magical about stepping through a wardrobe and entering Narnia that still feels exciting no matter how old you are. C.S. Lewis writes with so much warmth that every page feels comforting, and I found myself slowing down just to enjoy the journey. I also loved the illustrations in this edition. They added so much charm and made Narnia feel even more alive without taking away from my own imagination. Sometimes a single illustration captured the feeling of a chapter better than words could. This book reminded me why children’s classics become classics in the first place. They are written for children, but they never underestimate the reader, and as an adult I noticed themes about sacrifice, forgiveness, family, and faith that I definitely would not have appreciated when I was younger. There is something really nostalgic and comforting about returning to a story from childhood and discovering it again with adult eyes. It felt like visiting an old place that somehow still has new corners to explore. I will definitely be reading the rest of The Chronicles of Narnia, and I already understand why these books have remained beloved for generations.

Re-read this classic after reading Becoming Mrs. Lewis and Once Upon a Wardrobe -- historical fiction about the life of C.S. Lewis by Patti Callahan. As a child, I was enthralled by the Chronicles of Narnia. This read? Not so much. And am surprised and disappointed by that. Especially with the great run up of the story from the details of its origin story writing in Once a Wardrobe. Surprised at the amount of violence in it. I hadn't remembered that first time around. All in, it is still a fantastic premise and it was a joy to see the original color illustrations by Pauline Baynes in this deluxe hardback edition. Glad I purchased this edition.

Narnia has always been one of my favorite movies as a child. I've always wanted to read the original book one day. The release of this gorgeous special edition was the push I needed!
It's a children's book so obviously the story wasn't super deep and it was rather fast paced, but it was fun to read. I also enjoyed the old English!
Didn't think Edmund would be even more of a dipshit in the book though. Lucy was an absolute delight however. Peter and Susan were fun, though I liked Peter better in the movies. He feels quite flat in the book.

The school librarian of Hayfield Elementary recommended this book to me when I was 7 years old. I just read aloud to my 7yo; we both loved it.
