Doctor The Making of a Television Series is a celebration of a series that now has almost 100 million regular viewers around the world. It is also a fascinating account of the co-operative effort required to put the intrepid Doctor in orbit each week! A thoroughly detailed look at all aspects of behind the scenes of Doctor Who, in particular the making of The Visitation.
I remember when this was first published, it was so exciting; a book on the making of Doctor Who. There was so little published about the making of television and film in general and Who in particular back then, and I was so keen to learn more. Reading it again so many years later, it is not so exciting. It is a book for children, giving them a very basic introduction to the making of a television program, with so much more available today in books, on line and broadcast.. It is still a good first look at some of the areas involved, although technology has moved on since then. There are some great pictures.
To a 5th Doctor/Peter Davison fan such as myself, this was a gift from the gods. My 11 year old self devoured this book with all the ferocity of a starving lion. I realize it's rather light compared to the heftier, deeper non-fiction works available today...but to my younger self, this behind-the-scenes glimpse into my favourite program was nothing short of heavenly. I cherish my memory of it to this day...
Although it centres on a lesser DW adventure ("The Visitation"), it's actually a pretty complete "making-of" book, giving insight into the process of making the show from conception to answering the fan mail. As a kid, I thought the picture of Superfan David Saunders' Doctor Who room (p. 55) was a thing of awe and majesty. I'll admit that I still do.
