The Bridge: A House of Prey Novel

Rate this book
A stalled car. A missing man. A haunted bridge that won’t let go.
Every town has its ghost stories.

They meant to keep driving. One night, no sleep, the road unwinding through the foothills. But when Emily and Kade’s Ford dies on an old, covered bridge, they stumble into a town full of ghost stories and whispered legends.
Locals call it Snakebite Bridge. Some say it’s haunted. Others claim the devil himself lives there. Only last month, a man vanished after his car stalled in the same place, and no one can agree on what really happened to him.
In the daylight, the bridge looks harmless. At night, it feels wrong—longer than it should be, shadows stretching, and voices rising from the muddy water below. Like a place caught between life and death. As Emily accidently begins piecing together the truth, while Kade revives their car, she quickly realizes some folktales are told to hide something worse.
Now she and Kade must decide. Do they keep running from the past or uncover what really happened on Snakebite Bridge—before it happens again.
The Bridge is a chilling psychological horror novella with a self-contained mystery, perfect for fans of ghost stories, cult thrillers, and slow-burn haunted romance.

About the author

April Boulware

15 books80 followers
April Boulware writes haunting psychological horror with a heartbeat.

She blends gothic atmosphere, slow-burn suspense, and raw emotional depth to explore what it means to survive the unimaginable – and still hope. Her work often centers on women reclaiming their stories after spiritual abuse, trauma, and isolation, with threads of found family and quiet romance woven through the dark.

April draws inspiration from her own past in a cult-like, abusive environment, and the long road of healing that followed. When she’s not writing or reading something ghostly, she’s probably reorganizing her planner, sipping strong coffee, or chasing a story idea down a rabbit hole.

She lives in rural South Carolina with her husband, three children, and a bunch of chickens, where she homeschools by day and writes by night.

This novella between books was just what I needed and I’m hoping the inkling I have for book 4 is correct. The journey Kade and Emily enter in this seemingly sleepy little town is hardly what they bargained for, but can Emily escape her past. They both share these supernatural powers as ghosts continue to follow them. Perhaps they know these two can help them. Excited for book 4 and the continuation of this relationship!

The book by itself, as a new series, I’d give 5 stars to, but it…well it felt like a whole different series. It seemed as though the plot and genre took enough of a change that it shouldn’t have followed the other 2 books. But, again, it would be 5 stars by itself or as a different one!
