Thank you, Love Notes PR & C.G. Murray, for the ARC of this lovely book.
Every so often, a book surprises you not because of its magic, but because of its humanity. Secrets & Spells by C.G. Murray is one of those stories. It’s an atmospheric paranormal romance that isn’t afraid to get its hands dirty with real emotion; trauma, grief, recovery, and the stubborn hope that love can heal what therapy can’t reach.
The story follows Jared Devlin, a London journalist still haunted by his abduction at the hands of a serial killer known as The Raven. He’s forced to take a year-long sabbatical- a polite way of being pushed out of the newsroom that gave his life meaning. Emotionally frayed and desperate for direction, Jared stumbles across a job ad for a small-town paper called The Chronicle. The town? Crystal Lake, a place that shouldn’t exist on any map, but does.
Meanwhile, in Crystal Lake, Selene, a moon witch, has been having recurring visions of a stranger - a tall, blonde man with haunted eyes. When Jared arrives, she realizes he’s the one she’s been seeing. What follows is a beautifully slow, tender, and sometimes aching exploration of two lonely souls finding a way back to life — and to each other — through trust, magic, and second chances.
Murray writes with a balance of grit and grace. The trauma elements feel grounded and honest; Jared’s panic attacks and anxious thought spirals are portrayed with sensitivity rather than spectacle. Selene’s world, in contrast, is soft, glowing, and steeped in enchantment — full of witchcraft, protection spells, and sisterhood. The two worlds collide in ways that feel fated yet entirely believable.
The romance itself is open-door but meaningful. The intimacy scenes never feel gratuitous — they deepen the emotional bond instead of replacing it. You can feel the author’s intent to show that vulnerability and desire can coexist with trauma and healing. That’s rare in romance, and Murray does it justice.
Crystal Lake deserves its own praise. It’s not just a backdrop but a living, breathing entity. From the enchanted clothing shop Threads of Magic to the warm glow of small-town cafés, it’s a place that hums with secrets. You can almost hear the echo of spells between the pages.
If there’s a small drawback, it’s that the first act moves a bit slowly. Jared’s introspection dominates early chapters, and while that gives us rich insight into his mind, it occasionally delays the central story’s momentum. But once the pieces click into place — when fate, magic, and emotion intertwine — it becomes unputdownable.
What makes Secrets & Spells special is that it’s not just a love story. It’s about finding yourself again after everything breaks, about the courage to believe in connection, and about the strange comfort of being truly seen by someone — whether they’re human or witch.
If you enjoy emotional paranormal romances like A Discovery of Witches, The Dead Romantics, or Payback’s a Witch, you’ll fall for this book. It’s the kind of story that stays with you — not for its twists, but for its quiet, resilient heart.
Beautifully written, emotionally mature, and deeply atmospheric. Murray doesn’t just craft a romance — she gives us a spell of her own.
