even if mac is mafia, 1 of esther & maeve's bros, this is more about his & katie's story. from book 2, katie's escape was being with her rockstar bf. here, we get to know what a pos said bf is while mac watched from a distance. his attraction turned into obsession. it was only a matter of time til he broke & showed katie she deserved better. & when he did... ooof 🔥
🎧 the narrators performed their characters exquisitely in this duet narration. the way melissa maybeck voiced katie in chap 33 was something powerful♥️ & james joseph as mac... juz fab!! mac u dirty DIRTY sir!! the walking red flag id gladly let lure me in!! yezzirrr 🙌🏽

Holy shit what a wild ride this book was! I read it in one sitting, it was so freaking good! Did I have to take breaks to rehydrate…yeah, yeah I did 🥵🥵🥵 my gosh was this book HOT. Unhinged. Dark. Brutal. But hot! Each McGowan Mafia book gets better and better! Like, will I even survive reading the next two books!? Mac…yeah, you want to know this MMC.
Katie is dating Tommy, a straight up douch3 canoe. He’s a celebrity who thinks everything revolves around him and he “owns” Katie. He treats her like garbage and she puts up with it. She wanted some wildness and freedom after her dad was taken out of her life. Now she’s stuck. Katie just wants to be loved. She feels bad for having feelings/doing things while with Tommy, but he’s a sh!thead who has issues and doesn’t deserve her. She’s too sweet to deal with all of his BS.
My gosh Mac has a dirty mouth. 🫠 Watching Katie, leaving gifts, making her c**e, following her everywhere. There are so many ‘real life’ red flags, but holy sh!t, in this book they are ALL green flags! Gah. The possession he has over her, but in a way that he’s showing her what she deserves rather than just ‘owning’ her. Ahh. Mac = panty melting. The fact that he cares so much just makes him a dreamy MMC in my opinion.
I love Mac and Katie so much. The tension and chemistry between them is off the charts. You can feel it get more intense with each page you read. Not only do you get the tension and off the charts spice in this book, but the suspense. My gosh I couldn’t put this book down because there were so many things happening! Often suspense books take you until about three fourths of the way through until it picks up. Nope. Not Dark Obsessions! I mean you basically had it from the beginning, but the suspense was at least half of the book! And I loved every dark, depraved, and disturbing minute of it!
**Narration** I loved listening to this story! I loved it the first time, but having the deep tenor of James Joseph and the enthralling presence of Melissa Maybeck, just added another layer of spicy, depraved goodness to this story. I’ve only heard Joseph once before, but my gosh is he so deliciously talented! He was a perfect choice for Mac. This was my first time listening to Maybeck, but I was delightfully impressed with her performance. I definitely would listen to her again! These two did this book justice. This is my favorite book of the series, so as a listener and lover, I highly recommend the audiobook!

I was so excited for Katie and Mac after listening to Dark Enemies and they did not disappoint. They were teased very well by Effie leading up to their book.
Katie deserves so much more from a significant other than what she gets from Tommy. I really, really do not like that guy. I lost count of how many times I wanted to be able to throat punch that guy. He has all but extinguished Katie's light. Thankfully she finally gets some clarity and dumps him like the trash he is.
Mac, oh my goodness how much I love Mac. He has taken the top spot as my favorite. Are his ways of pursuing Katie traditional, not in the slightest....lol! He truly does love her though and is so fiercely protective. He is the man made for her, who will worship her and make her shine brighter than ever before.
I love how Effie builds their story. The chemistry is so good from the beginning. She gives readers plenty of teasing before Mac's truth is revealed. There are plenty of edge of your seat moments and lots of the siblings popping up throughout.
Melissa Maybeck and James Joseph bring life to the story in duet style. Much like the other female narrators in this series, Melissa was new to me and I love how she portrays Katie. James Joseph has very quickly became a favorite for me. I cannot get enough of his voice. I do not know what it is about his style but I am addicted and him as Mac....I could listen forever!

Effie Campbell brought the heat with this one! Mac was obsessed with Katie the moment he saw her but didn’t want to show it. Then when he started to notice her boyfriend Tommy isn’t treating her right he decided it was time to show her how she should be treated!!
Mac is the St@lker that you want in your wildest dreams! So hot! Love Katie’s spitfire as well. Another case of rival mafia family working out! Check the triggers with this one it is definitely darker than the other ones!
James Joseph did such a great job with this book voice multiple different Scottish accents! The growl and the good girls and the deg was fire!

I absolutely loved this audiobook. Having read the McGowan Mafia Series, hearing my favourite book in the series on audio, I was worried it would not do it justice, but man, was I wrong!!!
James Joseph, who is the narrator for our MMC, Mac McGowan, did an outstanding job, and my first time hearing Melissa Maybeck; she was the perfect Katie!
Mafia, stalker, masked man, danger, and a whole lot of heat... I am not sure what you're still doing here, reading this review.

Dark Obsessions barrels in with masked-man intrigue, stalker energy, and a heat level that rarely dips below simmer. It’s a swift, twisty read that whiplashes between anger and swoon—one chapter had me fuming, the next had me grinning like a fool.
The audio is a standout. James Joseph’s deep, rough-edged delivery (with multiple Scottish accents) gives Mac a visceral presence, while Melissa Maybeck’s performance captures Katie’s grit, vulnerability, and spark. The duet format amplifies intimacy and momentum, and several scenes genuinely popped because of their delivery.
Content-wise, this is darker than the previous installments and comes with meaningful trigger warnings. I appreciated the relentless pace, the obsessive-protective dynamic, and the atmospheric tension; I also found certain moral lines pushed hard enough to be polarizing. Overall, a dark, spicy, emotionally volatile ride that’s as much about fixation and power as it is about romance.

This series just continues to get better! Each book has been so different but keeps you seated in a mafia world that is easy to follow. While you can enjoy this one as a stand-alone, I would highly recommend starting with book one.
Katie thought she had her life together, but it keeps getting worse, with only her stalker keeping her grounded (and satisfied). Mac wants her and just feels rejected.
I consumed this one via audio, and it is hot as hell! Mac's deep tone just sinks in and takes you with it as only James Joseph can do. Melissa Maybeck as Katie is a perfect pairing. Their performances created quite a few bookmarks.
