A grumpy but sweetheart hero and a feral daughter. Seriously what’s not to love? This story is downright sugar-coated yummies. The writing is fantastic and the characters phenomenal, this author has a great way with words and is going places. I enjoyed the book. I appreciated the authors well done research and overall knowledge of the times and historical importance of the Southern states and the western frontier. Everything right down to the wildflowers found on the bedside table rang factual and true to the times.
There were laugh out loud moments, a couple of my favorites definitely worth mentioning was Susie’s frog court rumpus. Little miss Susie seeing her Miss frog getting justice for being criminally sat upon had me in stitches.
I also loved some bits here and there like the men risking gut injuries moving the martial bed toward the end of the book and also Dan telling Jake that doing his paperwork helped his “colorful vocabulary” - both of which had me laughing.
I loved the sense of community and how everyone comes together to protect Miss Lilly.
I adored all three main characters, Dan, Lilly, and little Susie.
I loved the Southern bits mixed in with the more difficult lifestyle of the West. I really liked Bighorn Gap.
The town was complete with a busybody, some fleeing outlaws to chase down, a couple mysteries to solve, a classical romance, a family found.
If you like romance books then I can say with all certainty that you will love The Widowmaker’s Bride.
There were laugh out loud moments, a couple of my favorites definitely worth mentioning was Susie’s frog court rumpus. Little miss Susie seeing her Miss frog getting justice for being criminally sat upon had me in stitches.

The Widowmaker’s Bride is an amazing, clean historical western set in 1874. Deputy U.S. Marshal Dan Crawford is a widower with an inquisitive, barely six-year-old daughter, Susie, who is a tomboy, and needs a mother to help guide her. Dan isn’t looking for love, but a marriage of convenience to help him with the home front and his daughter. Because of his job as a marshal, and being called away at a moment's notice, that leaves Mrs. Fergeson to step in while he is gone. His wife, Sarah, along with their son, died three years prior.
“I’m not looking for love anyway. I just need someone practical who won’t break Susie’s spirit or expect more from me than I can give. Sarah’s been gone three years. I’m not looking to replace her, I can’t—I won’t go through that again. This is about Susie needing a mother and me needing help. Nothing more.”
Mary Lillian ‘Lily’ Bishop of Raleigh, North Carolina, knows loss. She has lost her mother, both brothers due to the war, and then her father. A friend and church elder would often visit the Bishop's home, and after the death of Mr. Bishop, continued to come to offer support, guidance, and prayer with Mary Lillian. But he is a man who knows the art of control and uses that against her. She will be sent from Raleigh by relatives to her great-aunt in Charleston, South Carolina, to try and prevent a scandal. While in Charleston, Lily Bishop evolves, leaving Mary Lillian behind. She starts corresponding with a Marshal in Colorado Territory to become a mail-order bride.
“I’ll never let you go, Mary Lillian. You belong to me now.”
Dan: Miss Bishop, I want to be certain we understand each other, now that we’re face-to-face. What we’ll be getting into.

What an amazing page-turning story. I loved the main characters of Dan, Lily, and Susie, and many of the secondary characters. The story has the good, the bad, and the evil in people. Not just the ones who harm physically, but the harm caused by the gossipers of town who feel it is their right to know other people’s business, and in turn, cause harm and slander against them. People who are so quick to believe a total stranger who uses his church status and acts pious, while he is no more than a lowly snake. But pride comes before the fall, and justice will prevail, the victim will be exonerated, and a family will heal together. The story has angst, drama, a second-chance romance, secrets, life, and death danger, and yes, romance and a happy ending.

Really enjoyed this book, read it twice and the second time was as enjoyable as the first. Loved the characters and their interactions. Some characters from the town were less likable but they were eventually addressed. Many towns people were easily lead astray even though what they were told didn’t jive with what they saw or knew to be true. The h is a mail order bride from the south. When she arrived she created quite a stir because of her beauty and poise. The H’s breath was taken away and he knew he was in trouble because he only wanted a wife to raise his daughter and take care of his home. He didn’t want a true marriage because he didn’t want to fall in love and possibly lose her like his first wife. The H was a US marshal, well known for his skills, and abilities, and well respected by everyone. As agreed they were married. The daughter fell in love with her new mother immediately. And her behavior changed immediately due to that love. The h also fell in love with her new daughter immediately. A few women in town were jealous of her and caused her problems but in the end she earned the respect of the towns people. Also the H and h confessed their love for each other and decide to make their marriage real. Before they can do so the H is called away for business. When the man who abused her back home showed up he caused a lot of trouble. He arrived when the marshal was gone for his job, to bring down a notorious gang which he was very successful at. He then rushes home to address the problem there. His boss and the territory’s chief magistrate address the problem legally and the man from her past is found guilty and sent to prison. The H and h get their HEA. Recommend this book to everyone who loves a sweet western love story. Hopefully you will enjoy it as much as I did. Enjoy!

I really enjoyed The Widowmaker’s Bride! I’m a sucker for a good small-town romance, and the combination of a mail-order bride, a single dad, and a wounded hero made this one especially enjoyable.
Dan and Lily both have their own painful pasts to overcome, and I liked watching their relationship develop from a marriage of convenience into something much deeper. Lily is a strong and likable heroine, and Dan’s relationship with his six-year-old daughter added an extra layer of sweetness to the story. The little girl’s personality definitely brought some fun moments to the book!
I also enjoyed the setting in Buckhorn Gap. The small-town gossip, frontier atmosphere, and sense of community gave the story that cozy western feel, while Lily’s past brought enough danger and suspense to keep things moving.
I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator was fantastic! The narration really brought the characters and emotions to life and made the story even more enjoyable to listen to. The pacing and delivery kept me engaged from beginning to end.

Dan and Lily were both wonderfully written characters. Each carried wounds from their past that shaped their outlook on life, and I appreciated how realistically those struggles were portrayed. Rather than relying on misunderstandings or unnecessary drama, the story focused on personal growth, trust, and learning to move forward.
One of my favorite aspects of this audiobook was watching the relationship between Dan and Lily blossom. Their connection felt genuine, and seeing them slowly open their hearts to one another made for a very satisfying listen. Diana Reyes did an excellent job developing both characters and making me care about their journey.

I give this 4 1/2 Stars!
I want to start by saying I received an ARC of this book. This is a fade to black historical romance book. The main characters are Dan and Lily. Dan is a U.S. Marshall and a single dad. Lily is on the run from a man. Dan gives in and decides to get a mail-order bride so his daughter can have a stable family. Lily ends up agreeing to the marriage arrangement. Neither of them expected love. The more time they spend together the more they fall in love. When danger arrives will their love be enough? Will they be able to keep each other safe? I loved Dan and Lily. They both have gone through bad things so they deserved to be happy together. I loved Dan’s daughter Susannah. Dan is a great dad and Lily ends up being a great mother to Susannah. I also love the town where they live and the people in it. This book had some of my favorite tropes in it. I have come to love mail-order bride books so I was excited this was one. I was curious how a fade to black mail-order bride book would be as all of the mail-order bride books I have read are clean. I bought this book because I thought it would be like the Little House on the Prairie series, which I love, but I found something a little different, good, but different. The characters are lovely, especially Susie, who, without caring about danger, is always trying to help her father. I thought I would be more empathetic with Lily’s character, but I ended up preferring the grumpy Dan instead. He has much more humorous dialogue and behavior, like only real men can have, yet he still shows a sweet side sometimes. There’s room for romantic moments too, hidden among the clouds covering the sun as the past of both characters catches up with them in a very good final part of the book. The relationship between Susie and Lily almost made me cry from sweetness.

This was a cute read. I personally enjoyed the western and small town vibes. It drew me in with suspense that had me invested halfway. I personally enjoy mail order bride romances, so I was excited to pick this one up.
There was some plot twists I didn’t see coming and an ending that was satisfying. There was some sensitive topics like sexual assault that was handled with care.
Though I enjoyed the story, it was a bit frustrating to read because there were so many head hops, and I was confused with whose point of view I was in. When Lily arrived, I was in Dan’s point of view, then suddenly in Mrs. Ferguson‘s point of view and later on, I was getting points of view from people that I did not expect like Mrs. Simmons. I like having mystery in a book and showing and telling through another character’s eyes.

4.5 stars: This book was so good! This is a historical romance about Lily, a woman who, after facing grief and trouble at home, agrees to travel to the frontier to marry a widower, Dan, who needs a stepmother for his exuberant six-year-old daughter. What starts as convenience grows to something more, but it is complicated by both of their pasts, practically and emotionally. I thought the pacing was done well overall; my favorite moment was how happy she was to be included by playing piano for the church. I did think the subplot about getting revenge on her former abuser was a little out of proportion, and some dialogue, especially with Susie, the daughter, was really convenient or somewhat repetitive. This was a gorgeous romance; I especially loved the little sweet details like his insistence on her having her lavender soap because he associated her with the smell.

I loved this book and could hardly put it down to do my chores or even to go birding, which is my favorite thing. The author created engaging characters that fit the period and were believable and approachable...downright likeable, except of course the villains. The plot was downright gripping and I found myself speed reading to make sure everything turned out all right.
Reading about the post-Civil War period in what was then a territory, and of how the justice system worked in that time frame was informative and enjoyable.
I was astonished to learn that this was a first novel as it was polished and very readable. I hope the author will write many more.

Extremely well-written book that brought the reader into the life and experiences of the main character Lily, a young woman who lost everything from the Civil War who was attempting to escape an abusive stalking situation. Becoming a mail-order bride to a marshal who needed someone for his young daughter in Colorado, he wasn't expecting a lovely young lady from the South. Mostly gone on assignments, he wasn't aware at first that the stalker followed Lily, spreading lies to destroy her reputation. Loved by his daughter and falling for her, he needed to legally thwart this stalker through the legal system for a future together. Enjoyed the story from beginning to end.

Audiobook: This was my first experience with this author's work, and I was entertained. I thought the author presented the best and worst things about a small-town setting. I liked Lily and Dan as the characters were realistic and personable. I felt for them as they faced their trials and tribulations. Although I thought Andrew Post's narration was good, I had to increase the playback speed as his delivery was a little slow for me; however, I appreciated the various voices he used for the different characters. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.

Wow! This was an awesome story - This is the story of Dan, a town Marshal, and his little girl Susie, who desperately needs a mother, and their search for the perfect Mail Order Bride. Lily is the lady who answers the ad and comes to take her place in both Dan and Susie's lives. The transition is not an easy one and we find out that Lily is running from a past that won't stay away. I must say Reyes does a masterful job of allowing you to feel the pain and joy that each person in the family experiences and creates characters that you want to win.

The Widow maker's Bride is Book 1 in the Brides of Buck horn Gap by Diana Reyes. I believe that the author tackled a hard subject… human trafficking. Women in the late 1800s had little rights and when things like special assault happened, many times the women is blamed. Lily is A wonderful character and perfect for Marshal Dan and his 6 year old daughter. The past comes back to bite Lily and I thought the ending was perfect. This us a very good nook and a outstanding beginning to a new series. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

Enjoyable story!
Dan, A Marshall, has been raising his daughter of six for the last three years on his own. His wife died and left him not wanting to find love again. He needed a housewife and someone to help with his daughter. He put an ad for a wife and got a number of takers. Lily seemed to be the best fit. Now I leave the rest for you to read. You will definitely enjoy this story.

This is such a wonderful, clean historical story of the old west. U. S. Marshall Dan Crawford is at his wits end with his precocious little girl who is more of a wild child tomboy. He needs help in the worst way so he sends for a mail order bride. Lily is running from a scandal and a man who seems obsessed with her. I recommend you read the book.

This was an excellent book. An underlying heartbreak with a rejected predator hold her life in fear as Lily Crawford tries to form a lasting connection with a U.S. Marshall. His six year old daughter brings joy and trouble to Lily in the innocent way only children have with their honesty. I hated to see it end

This was one of the better Mail Order Bride books I have read. It is written just a little bit better, has a plot, isn't deep enough to have been stolen from an autobiography. This had deep emotions, no goody goody types everywhere, & was real for the time period. One other thing that made this book special was laughter, in unexpected times. This is completely sweet, no steamy at all.

I loved this book! It start started out just total enjoyment and entertainment. Six year old Suzie is quite a little character. Then things started happening and mysteries began to unfold and I began to be on the edge of my chair. Also small town gossips are always maddening. A very enjoyable read.

The “widowmaker” cares for woman more than many of the men in his age. The marshal and many other law men and judges see the value of woman and protect them with the full extent of the law! A wonderful book and a great love story!
