A Destran pilot haunted by guilt. A scientist who’s never needed anyone in her life. A living spaceship who needs them bonded to survive.
Maya I was hired to do a planetary survey, not to awaken a ten-thousand-year-old sentient spaceship that fuses with my equipment and floods my mind with centuries of memories. Psychic overload will eventually kill me unless Rykar, a brooding Destran pilot with a haunted past, accepts his role as her symbiont and the title of Destran lord. I shouldn’t be noticing how his skin shifts color when I catch him staring, or how his rare smiles make my pulse race, because I have much bigger problems. My employer as sent a strike team to claim me and the Sola I woke up as their property. They claim I signed away my rights when I took this job. They plan to enslave the ancient being and me.
I keep to myself because the last time I was responsible for people I loved, they died. So when a Sola chooses me as her lord and floods a human geologist with psychic overload that only I can contain, my first instinct is to refuse. Except Maya Chen is stubborn, brilliant, and determined to save this Sola even if it destroys her. And despite my best efforts to stay detached, I can’t stop watching the way her eyes light up when she solves a problem, or how she argues with me like I’m worth arguing with, or the way she fits perfectly in my arms.
But accepting lordship means accepting responsibility for a living ship and those who would call her their home. It means trusting myself not to fail again. And now enemy forces are closing in, claiming Maya and the Sola as property to be seized, and I have to retreat into the safety of isolation, or accept a role I swore I’d never take Leader. Protector. Destran Lord.
Maps of Destiny is set in the Lords of Destra world. You do not have to read the Lords of Destra series to enjoy this series, but if you HAVE read the Lords of Destra, you'll see some familiar faces! I write what I love to read, so there are no cliffhangers or cheating, and there's always consent and a happy ending. Cheers!
This is much more like a "hard core" scifi story, as we used to call it. There's an overload of scientific terms, concepts, and actions.
The plot itself is mostly about the awakening of an ancient and sentient lifeforce that while organic, at first appears more monolithic than alive. There's also the evil corporate bad guys who take the stage.
The romance part is woven into the story. At the same time, it feels very secondary at best. Once the action gets started, there's no hugs and kisses happening.
I read the original series a long time ago. A new reader can get through this book without that. It's still a slightly challenging read if you haven't ever read hard scifi.
I'm kind of on the fence about this. As the first in a new series, you'd expect there to be alot of backstory and world building. That of course will overshadow a relationship and any spice. There is something kind of cold about this story, though. It feels like there's too much telling and not quite enough showing. There's also a feeling of rushing forward really fast that pushes aside the relationships. I would have liked more about the relationship between the Sola and the lord, and how the Sola became damaged. Maybe that's for future books.
I hope that future books have a warmer feeling as the world building continues.
When her geological survey mission accidentally links Maya to a mysterious, unknown Sola, she finds herself needing to rely on Ryker, a Destran pilot, for help.
Ryker has been chosen by the Sola to be her bonded lord, but something is wrong- and Ryker doesn’t believe he is fit for the role, but Maya’s life might just depend on it!
We back in the new Destran settlements, some eight years after the end of the original series. We do get to see some of the MCs from that series, but a new reader shouldn’t feel they need to read it (although it’s well worth it!).
This time though, the Destrans, humans, and Solas, might be a little different from our previous MCs. Ryker, isn’t already a Lord, and isn’t a warrior. Maya is a scientist working for a corporation, and the sola is a little different too!
It’s a fast paced, exciting read, that I thoroughly enjoyed. There are a couple of steamy scenes, but not too spicy, and those who enjoy more alien technology and politics at play, will probably love the book too.
This is perfect for fans of the original series, and the SFR fans who enjoy things that just aren’t normal on our own planet!
There just isn't a big enough *sigh* for Maps Of Destiny. Maya and Rykar are my favorite Destran couple, well for now anyway. Rykar is a broken Destran who is living with old pain from past tragedy, the Sola is a broken Sola who has been buried and alone for 1000's of years. And Maya is the human woman who is the Bridge that brings them together. I am not doing it justice at all. There is plenty of action, there is friendship, there is betrayal, there is steam and above all there is love and an HEA for all involved. The one thing I can always say and you can always count on with Ella Blake is that the book is going to be incredibly well written with characters who are warm and so real...even when they're aliens. The world building is seamless. I loved the book and can't wait for the next one! Something tells me Zara is going to give her Destran a run for his money!
This is book one of the Return to Destra series. I have read the original series and enjoyed those stories as well. The history of Destra is that they have special beings call Solas that have to bond with a Destran. The Destrans that can bond are called Lords. In this new series, a human scientist named Maya discovers an ancient Sola, who has been dormant. The being tries to bond with Maya but she is human and cannot fully make the connection. Then enters a pilot who is Destran but broken by the loss of his family. The Sola is very smart and works with both Maya and Rykar to make the required connection. There is a happy ending. Read On!
Thoughts of how this would go. Not expecting much of it. But I am not a writer (thankfully for many). Personally would have liked the ship part to be different. Felt like it was built up then just stopped. Felt like it could have lead to it finding other dormant ships and establishing other colonies. Would have loved their original mission of the rooted ships be to start changing inhospitable planets into ones where life can flourish then move on to do so for others.
This a return to Destra!! It begins after after the Solas have settled on their new planet. In discovering a new group of crystals that suddenly create what can only be called a big problem!!! In this book MS Blake takes on a wild trip of unbelievable things!! It is one of her best !! I read in ku then bought it!! My recommendation is buy it y'all it is a fantastic read !!
Gave this 3 stars because there is nothing inherently wrong with it, this is just a boring read. The plot, character, relationship development, even the steamy bits were all just pretty boring. This is the first book in the series I read so I thought the living ship concept was interesting but mentioning the Sola has ancient wisdom over and over with nothing to show for it really fell flat for me.
Sola, Destran—those words energize me! My favorite aliens are making a big comeback, this time with a new Destran Lord and an ancient Sola! The story kept me on the edge of my seat, eagerly flipping through the pages, excited to reach the climax. I loved reconnecting with old friends and can't wait to meet more!
Maya has "accidentally" found an ancient Sola. Rykar must bond with the Sola for the two females to live. LunarLinc has some explaining to do about the "accidentally". Enjoy
This is almost my first Destra novel. The only other I’ve read was Found by the Alien Lord - Lords of Destra #0.5. I found the concept of the Solas being sentient thought provoking. I think I’ve only run across this in movies and television shows (Hi Hal) The Destran's emotional responses by having their skin change color sure would make it hard to conceal one’s feelings.
Once again I’m a bit put off by beings from different species becoming bonded. Maya wasn’t even there as a prospective bride. What are the odds that an earthling fated mate would wind up on Destra? Is Fate omniscient?
Maya and Rykar’s romance didn’t have a lot of setbacks other than her employer deciding that she was their property. The motive behind this was pretty shady and added the most tension to their relationship, not to mention the Earth/Destra alliance. .
