In this spellbinding debut fantasy, passion and peril entwine in a tale of curses, monsters, and forbidden desire. Perfect for fans of dark romance, this sweeping first installment introduces a heroine whose heart may be as dangerous as her power.

Born with the blood of a hell god in her veins, Helaina Ironblood has lived her life in secrecy, hidden from a realm already teetering on the edge of ruin. When tragedy shatters her family and the heir to the throne is lost, Helaina is cast into exile—her cursed power now a beacon to enemies who would see the world burn. Beyond the Ash Cliff Mountains, monsters stalk the land, and darker forces hunger for the weapon Helaina carries within her.

Seized by Theodon Wrenn, the feared captain of a mysterious legion, Helaina is thrust into a war that stretches far beyond her imagining. Ruthless, commanding, and bound by secrets of his own, Theodon believes she is the key to victory. Yet the more he tries to bend her to his will, the more he is drawn to her defiance—and to the dangerous fire in her blood. Unlocking her power requires the Bone Dagger, an ancient relic that binds gods, beasts, and mortals alike, but demands a price—Helaina’s mortal life.

Torn between the man who would sacrifice her and the destiny she never wanted, Helaina must decide whether her curse will bring salvation … or ruin.

“If you treat someone like they’re fragile, that’s what they become—easily broken like glass. If you treat someone like they’re steel…”

A powerful fantasy that weaves together gods, monsters, and the journey of turning pain into strength.

The Bone Dagger was a fast-paced read that completely pulled me in. The world is dark and magical, filled with deadly, morally gray characters. As a huge fan of mythology, I was especially intrigued by the lore surrounding the gods and the different bloodlines—this element really hooked me from the start. Helaina is a complex protagonist, weighed down by grief and guilt, staring into what feels like an endless tunnel. Yet as the story unfolds, her resilience shines through. She’s stubborn, fierce, and done tolerating what’s hurt her. I really appreciated the depth of her healing journey and the growth she experiences throughout the book. Theodan was exactly what she needed—someone who could challenge her while also offering something she lacked: a sense of home.

My only real critique is that the story somehow delivers both enemies-to-lovers and instalove. It wasn’t necessarily a negative, but the timeline felt compressed at times. Because everything seemed to happen over such a short span, their relationship occasionally felt like it could have used more development to fully land emotionally.

Overall, this is a very strong start to the series, and that cliffhanger has me especially eager for book two.

Tropes: gods x demigods, revenge arc, grief & healing, strong-willed FMC, sassy characters

Highly recommend for readers who enjoy fantasy with rich mythological elements. If you like romantasy with darker undertones, this one is definitely worth picking up.

WOW. What a stunning debut!! The Bone Dagger captivated me from the very first pages — there wasn’t a single moment I felt bored and I had the hardest time putting it down!! I need all of my Dark Romantasy lovers to add this to their TBR ASAPPP.

“Our darkest times birth our greatest strengths.”

Helaina — our neglected, cursed princess FMC has spent her entire life hidden away while her siblings thrived. Now that they’re gone (RIP), her family arranges a marriage on her behalf, so they can finally be rid of her 😭.

And then we meet our MMC, Theodon. Theo babyyy. Big daddy Theo. LOML. Newest book boyfriend. Okay, you get it 😂. He senses Helaina's magic and kidnaps her while she's en route to her fiancé 👀 and that's only the first few chapters!! Trust, you're gonna want to add this one to your TBR!!

“You don’t have to answer,” he pulled her in close. “I can smell it on you.”

The slow burn? Perfection. The twists and turns? Broke my neck. & the found family trope?? Executed flawlessly. Callum is a sweet angel bb and idc what anyone says. I will go to war for him 🥺. Although he wouldn’t need it 😂.

The last chapter gave me literal chills. Helaina is such a badass and I already know the wait for book two is going to be BRUTAL.

“No vast space, void, or army could keep me from hunting you down and slaughtering those who stood in my way.”

Be sure to check the trigger warnings — this story does explore heavier themes like grief and eating disorders.

Read if you enjoy:
-Dark Fantasy Romance
-Cursed FMC
-Beasts and monsters
-Magic
-Found family

The Bone Dagger was my very first fantasy book, and I did not expect to love it this much. It completely captivated me from the beginning and honestly may have turned me into a fantasy reader.

The tension between the main characters is so well done — it keeps you hooked and wanting more. I also love that the trauma was portrayed in a way that felt raw and relatable.

If this is what fantasy is like, I’m officially in. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I got into reading as a way of escaping, so I’m big on details of character descriptions, locations, events, etc. There have been books that don’t give me enough to envision what’s going on that I quickly DNF cause my brain needs that information. Clara did a phenomenal job of providing enough detail that I can be a fly on the wall in Elkron, without this being a 1300 page book (I just don’t have a long enough attention span for that). The story is captivating and there was a pivotal point I was laying in my bed, kicking my feet and looked at the clock knowing I HAD to put the kindle down so I can be a productive member at work the next day (didn’t work).

At first I wasn’t sure I would be able to connect as well with Helaina as our grief was different. However, her feelings of being unwanted or pushed aside and just not feeling good enough really resonated, making her relatable to almost anyone whether you’ve dealt with grief or not. And the realization that finally you aren’t a burden or that SOMEONE actually wanted you gives hope that that is actual reality and can happen to us all. “Who takes care of you” and her not having an answer might’ve been one of my top five lines because it was around that time I was feeling like I am Helaina, she is me. She was a very likable FMC and her distrust/fight lasted a normal amount of time for someone in her position. I’ve read previous books that the royal main character is so annoying and unlikable based on attitude and actions repeatedly throughout and FINALLY that wasn’t the case with The Bone Dagger. Helaina said she never had a friend, well I want to be friends with this baddie.

Now, big daddy THEO 🤏🏽🤏🏽🤏🏽
“No vast space, void, or army could keep me from hunting you down and slaughtering those who stood in my way…. There is nowhere you could go that I wont follow.”
“Is she worth it? I would massacre entire kingdoms to keep you from her”
ARE YOU KIDDING ME. OKAY SIR, I AM SAT. THE YEARNING. Statements like this just really get me. Like I said before I was kicking my feet reading this! He’s big, he’s hot, fiercely protective and he WANTS her. How do I get an ancient being to call me his good girl?

Twists and turns made this SUCH a good story, I couldn’t put it down, I constantly needed to know what was going to happen next. My family constantly questioned why I was doing every day tasks and walking around the house with my kindle constantly in hand; simple, I couldn’t put this book down, I was captivated.

My only complaint? Having to wait for the next book 😩

Helaina is the cursed princess of Keles. She feels definitely feels cursed after both of her siblings have died and she’s being married off to someone far away. Theo is a commander of the divine milita that protects the realm. He senses Hels dark magic and knows it can be the thing that protects the mortals from the beasts that are constantly attacking. Hel gets some training from her comrades but is still terrified of her shadow magic. Hel must use the bone dagger to enter a trials to get access to her blood magic.

“From our darkest moments come our greatest strengths.”

Hel is a bit insufferable for most of the book but ultimately it makes sense with flashbacks. Though I still don’t understand why her siblings refused to tell her the truth. But the sinister personality that emerges in her shadow mommy phase is definitely something I’m going to keep my eye on. Book 2 will be a banger for sure.

Theo is a dark demon of a commander who’s got a lot of secrets but is devoutly loyal to his people. Can’t wait to see how far he will go for her.

This was really good but not great. I think I just didn’t vibe with Hel being so against Theo without a better reason. He never did anything to her besides save her.

This book completely pulled me in from the start. The world-building is vivid and expansive without feeling overwhelming—you can tell there’s history, politics, and culture beneath the surface of every scene. The characters are layered and complex, making their choices feel real and sometimes painfully relatable. The magic system stands out as something truly original—structured enough to feel grounded, yet imaginative enough to keep surprising me.

It wasn’t just hard to put down—I didn’t want to leave the story even when I had to. I caught myself thinking about it when I wasn’t reading, mentally stepping back into the world and anticipating what might come next. I cannot wait for the second book.

I’m not usually a fantasy lover, but Clara Rhodes has converted me! From the unending action, the tragic backstories, and the enemies to lovers tropes I was hooked from page one. The Bone Dagger completely sucked me in from the very first page. This was one of those reads where you’re on the edge of your seat, devouring chapters and telling yourself “just one more” because you need to know what happens next.

The story is a perfect roller coaster of action and slow-burn tension, layered with grief, loss, betrayal—and then hope. Clara Rhodes does an incredible job letting the emotional weight settle without ever slowing the momentum. The anticipation builds beautifully, and when the retribution comes, it’s so satisfying.

Some scenes were an absolute nurse’s dream (you’ll know what I mean), and the chemistry? Sexy, charged, and worth the wait.

I cannot wait for book 2!

Clara Rhodes hits the ground running in her debut fantasy, The Bone Dagger, the first installment in what promises to be an epic new dark romantasy series. Balancing high stakes, deadly magic, and an intense enemies-to-lovers romance, Rhodes delivers a sprawling, character-driven narrative. For readers who love deep world-building, dangerous secrets, and characters who have to fight tooth and nail for survival, this book is an excellent start to a new series.

The story follows Helaina Ironblood, a heroine carrying a terrifying secret: she has the blood of a hell god flowing through her veins. When a sudden family tragedy upends her world and shatters her family structure, Helaina is forced into exile beyond the Ash Cliff Mountains—a brutal landscape crawling with deadly monsters. However, her true peril begins when she is captured by Theodon "Theo" Wrenn, the commanding and ruthless captain of a mysterious legion. Theo is convinced that Helaina and her latent, cursed powers are the key to winning an impending war. The catch? Unlocking that power requires an ancient relic called the Bone Dagger, an item that demands a price no less than Helaina’s own mortal life.

At the center of this gripping narrative are the individual and intersecting character arcs of Helaina and Theo. Helaina's arc is a heavy exploration of grief, self-preservation, and hidden identity. Forced to hide who she truly is for her entire life, her initial defensive mechanism is defiance. To be frank, she starts the book acting incredibly obnoxious to almost everyone around her. However, as the layers of her trauma peel away, you begin to understand that her prickly attitude is a shield.

Part of what makes Helaina so grounded is the relationship she shares with her brother and sister. Rhodes handles their sibling dynamic with immense care and emotional depth, making the familial bond feel like the emotional anchor of Helaina's life. It is her love for her family that initially drives her, making her eventual isolation all the more impactful as she learns to transition from merely hiding her power to actively mastering it.

Theo’s arc runs parallel as a man driven entirely by duty, secrets, and a ruthless need for victory. When he kidnaps Helaina, his actions are incredibly frustrating. He treats her abduction as if he is doing her a grand favor, completely withholding vital explanations and acting with an infuriating sense of superiority. This initial friction makes the first chunk of their interaction tough to swallow, as both characters are trapped in their worst habits: he is arrogant and controlling, and she is bitter and combative.

Yet, the true magic of the book happens once they finally get over themselves. As the plot forces them onto common ground, the toxic friction melts into genuine, palpable tension. Their communication improves, and Theo’s rigid walls begin to crack as he is drawn to Helaina’s sheer defiance. Watching them slowly earn each other's trust and respect transforms the book into an absolute page-turner. You find yourself utterly hooked on finding out how they will navigate the impossible choice between his duty to the realm and her right to live.

By the time the final chapters roll around, Rhodes subverts expectations and amps up the stakes, culminating in a jaw-dropping ending. The Bone Dagger is a well done book one that sets up a massive world while keeping its characters deeply human and flawed. With a cliffhanger that leaves a massive impact, I am completely invested in Helaina and Theo's fates and will definitely be picking up the next book the second I can get my hands on it.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the copy in exchange for an honest review.

“I refuse to coddle you, to let you sink back into that place we found you in. You've been hidden and told to listen and obey for too fucking long.”

The Bone Dagger is the kind of debut that reminds you just how much potential a new fantasy series can have. This was SOOOO good. Even though it took me a little bit to settle into the world and all of its moving pieces, once everything clicked, I was completely hooked.

The strongest part of this book is easily Helaina’s journey. She’s introduced as someone weighed down by grief, fear, and the burden of a destiny she never chose, and watching her slowly reclaim ownership of her life was far more compelling than any battle scene. Her growth feels earned, transforming from someone who believes she’s a curse into someone determined to define herself on her own terms.

The world itself is rich with gods, demigods, monsters, ancient magic, and bloodline politics without ever feeling impossibly difficult to follow. There are plenty of mysteries woven throughout the story, and every new revelation made me more curious about the larger mythology. It definitely feels like this is only scratching the surface of what’s to come, and I can tell you now I’ll definitely be continuing with this series.

The romance delivered exactly what I wanted in a dark romantasy. There was sharp banter, undeniable chemistry, and enough tension to keep me reading. Theo walks the line between ruthless commander and reluctant protector well, and I especially enjoyed how their relationship developed through constant clashes rather than instant trust. That said, I did find myself wishing some of the emotional beats had been given a little more room to breathe develop. The chemistry was there, but I just wanted a bit more time spent deepening the relationship before some of the bigger moments.

One of my favorite surprises was the found family. Found family will probably always be one of my favorite tropes, and it was done so well here. As Helaina slowly finds her people willing to stand beside her instead of simply using her, the story immediately brought me to tears. Those friendships balanced out the darker themes beautifully and ended up being just as memorable as the romance.

Be aware that this story doesn’t shy away from heavy topics, including grief, self-loathing, depression, and discussions of self-harm, so definitely check the content warnings before diving in. Overall, The Bone Dagger is an incredibly promising debut with an engaging FMC, addictive romantic tension, fascinating mythology, and an ending that practically demands you pick up the sequel. I’m excited to see this world expand because it feels like the best is still yet to come.

Thank you NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for this eARC!

⬦ Insta-Lust Enemies (?) to Lovers
⬦ Godly Bloodlines
⬦ Sibling Bonds
⬦ Revenge Arc
⬦ Multiple POVS

FMC is a princess locked away by her own family, essentially forbidden to leave due to her dark powers that could bring chaos to the world. But after the death of her brother and sister, she's seen as a burden by her surviving family and sent off to an arranged marriage. Just as she's prepared to end her life out of grief and despair, MMC essentially kidnaps her for his magical army that's the main force fighting against the evil unknown enemy invading their lands. MMC wants FMC to learn to use her powers so she can help fight the enemy instead of giving up hope, but his abrasive attitude has FMC infuriated with him.

Fans of insta-lust will be really into this, with the FMC and MMC being physically attracted to each other from the get go and quite a few steamy scenes 😳 Buuuut sorry 😭 I fell for a side character, Callum, instead! He's introduced as the bloodthirsty battlenut but ends up being quite sensitive, and I felt like FMC's relationship with Callum was much more developed by 75% of the story due to them Her character development by the end was pretty satisfying and once she gets her shadow powers, she's very powerful. However, I feel like the other reviews calling her Shadow Mommy may be a bit misleading because she doesn't actually become a powerful Shadow Mommy until the last ~5% of the story.

3.75 Stars. An enjoyable fantasy read. Insta-lust with a pretty quick romance if you're into that. But *not* dark romance as the synopsis might imply.

Thanks to NetGalley, Blackstone Publishing, and Clara Rhodes for the opportunity to read and review an advance e-arc of this book.

I really enjoyed the grim start to this book. It had me prepared for some dark themes and left me curious about how things arrived at that point. That curiosity continued through the story. It gave enough information to follow along while holding enough back to keep me wanting answers. The flashback chapters slowly filled in the gaps, and I often found myself eager to get through the present-day chapters just to get to the next flashback and see how it would eventually tie back to the opening and the remainder of the story.

Because of the nature of the story, we don't get to see much of the world. The magic wasn't anything particularly new, but it was incorporated well. I would have loved the chance to see more of the monsters that were described as wreaking havoc across the land. They sounded really interesting.

To be honest, I was disappointed with how the vibe of the book shifted as soon as the FMC, Helaina, and MMC, Theodon, met. The story started with a serious, darker tone, and the insta-lust and banter kind of cheapened, for lack of a better word, the reading experience. I really only felt this when Helaina and Theo were interacting with each other or thinking about one another. Otherwise, the quality of the story held up. Also, I would have preferred more time for the romance to develop. And, as I mentioned at the beginning of this review, the synopsis says it's "perfect for fans of dark romance," which felt pretty misleading. There were a few moments that suggested Helaina was aroused by pain/fear/danger, but nothing ever really came of it.

What threw me off a bit was the third POV, Callum. I didn't dislike having it, but I'm not quite sure *why* it was included. I expected that to be explained by the end of the book, but it wasn't. I did like his character, though, and I'd like to know more about why he was important enough to have his own chapters.

Overall, I liked the plot, appreciated the darker elements, enjoyed the writing, and liked the characters individually, even if the romance wasn't great.

I had the pleasure of reading this book about two months ago, and I'm still thinking about it to this day. Rate: 4.25/5.

For starters, I am not a typical "romantasy" reader. I frequently find myself only enjoying classics, historical fiction, romance, and more. The reason for this seems to be that I can never get past the world building of most fantasy books. I either believe it takes far too long and then the plot is never fleshed out, or the opposite, and it is much too short and I have no concept of imagery for how the world ought to be. With that being said, this book quickly became an exception. I lived for the world building, so much so that I finished this book in less than two days, and for fantasy, that's saying a lot for me. I thought it was just enough world building to get me hooked from the first few chapters.

Another reason I loved reading this book was for the romance. A lot of books are overflowing heavily with romance but this was the perfect mix. I found myself falling in love with the connection grown between Helaina and Theo. One of the things I'm looking forward to when it comes to romance and hopefully the next book in the series is a mate for Callum. I think he truly deserves one, and I found myself hoping that he would find his throughout this book, knowing that was probably an unrealistic ask. He was one of the few side characters that I absolutely fell in love with and adored.

Finally, the ending. I will not spoil it but the plot twist may have been one of the best I have read in my life. I was clutching my kindle as I read the last few chapters and praying it would never end. This book was filled with plot twists that I never saw coming. This is one of my biggest qualms with fantasy, knowing what's going to happen next. The hero lives, the villain dies, and the good people live happily ever after. But, this book was not like this. It was, dare I say, an original, unique. I loved the cliffhanger and it made me want to get my hands on the next book right away: devastated I could not. This book put me on a fantasy kick for almost a month, and I think it was the perfect mix of fantasy and romance. I can't wait for the next one and to see where this cliffhanger takes the readers!

The Bone Dagger
by Clara Rhodes

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Pub Date: July 21, 2026

First of all, thank you to Blackstone Publishing for the opportunity to ARC read The Bone Dagger.

Who needs a shadow Daddy when… shadow mommy has arrived.

I am going to need a minute because this book absolutely grabbed me by the throat and refused to let go.

The Bone Dagger is a dark fantasy romance filled with gods, monsters, magic, revenge, and characters who are walking around with enough trauma to fill an entire library. Naturally, I loved it.

Helaina’s journey was easily one of my favorite parts. She has spent so much of her life being treated as fragile, as something to hide away and protect, but watching her realize she was never weak was incredibly satisfying. She is angry, stubborn, powerful, and finally ready to stop letting other people decide who she is.

And then there is Theodon.

Theo, sir.

I understand why everyone is talking about you.

The dynamic between Helaina and Theodon was everything I wanted. The tension, the challenge, the way they push against each other while still seeing something in one another that no one else does—it was addictive. He doesn’t just protect her; he respects her strength, and that made their relationship so much more interesting.

The mythology in this book was also such a highlight. The gods, bloodlines, and magic system created a world that felt full of history and secrets, and I loved slowly piecing everything together. There was always the feeling that something bigger was happening beneath the surface.

My only complaint is that I wanted more time. The romance moves quickly, and while I enjoyed their chemistry, I would have loved a little more space for some of those emotional moments to develop.

That being said… this debut was SO much fun. The action kept me hooked, the characters had me invested, and that ending had me staring at the page like “excuse me, where is book two?”

If you love dark romantasy, powerful heroines, morally gray characters, mythology, monsters, and found family, The Bone Dagger needs to be on your radar.

I’ll be patiently (read: impatiently) waiting for the next book.

The Bone Dagger completely consumed me from start to finish. If you love dark fantasy romance with rich world-building and high stakes, this book delivers on every level.

The story follows a cursed princess, Helaina, whose fate has been twisted by the very gods meant to protect the world. Haunted by the deaths of her siblings and riddled with guilt, she believes her greatest sin was simply wanting to experience life and love. That longing for something more ultimately becomes the reason the gods curse her—and the weight of that guilt shapes every choice she makes.

When a ruthless warrior kidnaps her, it seems like the beginning of another nightmare—but instead it becomes the catalyst for her awakening. Theon is relentless in his belief that she is far more powerful than she allows herself to be. The tension between them is intense and emotional, especially knowing he is the kind of man who would burn the world down for her without hesitation.

The world-building is immaculate. The lore surrounding the gods, the curse, and the fragile state of the world feels deep and immersive, making every revelation hit harder. Nothing feels surface-level; every detail adds to the sense that something ancient and dangerous is unfolding.

Another highlight is the cast of side characters who bring so much life to the story. They’re loyal, funny, and incredibly lovable, adding moments of warmth and humor that balance the darker elements of the plot.

Watching the princess evolve from someone consumed by guilt and fear into someone who might be powerful enough to challenge the gods themselves is incredibly satisfying. And the warrior? Fierce, devoted, and perfectly morally gray.

This book is dark, emotional, and impossible to put down. If you love cursed heroines, fated mates, powerful gods, found family, and a warrior who would burn the world for the woman he loves, The Bone Dagger is absolutely a must-read.

Thank you to NetGally, Clara Rhodes and Blackstone Publishing for allowing me to arc this epic fantasy.

The Bone Dagger by Clara Rhodes is a gripping read that had me hooked from start to finish. The story opens right in the middle of the action, which immediately pulled me in and had me questioning everything—from the characters’ motives to how events would unfold. That intriguing start made it hard to put the book down because I just needed answers.
One of the standout elements for me was the “enemies to lovers” trope, which was executed really well—it felt natural, tense, and genuinely engaging rather than forced. There is comical relief and hot tension! The dynamic between the characters kept me invested the entire time.
The worldbuilding is another strong point, especially with the inclusion of magic, demigods, and shadow wielding. These elements added a rich, layered feel to the story and made the fantasy aspects especially engaging without becoming overwhelming or confusing.
As someone who has read many fantasy/romance books, I can confidently say this one falls among the top few I’ve experienced. Rhodes’ writing style is another highlight—it’s smooth and immersive without being overly complicated, making the story easy to get lost in. While I sometimes struggle with shifts between past and present tense, it actually worked well here and didn’t pull me out of the story. The pacing felt just right, and I especially appreciated the length of the book—it didn’t drag, but it also didn’t feel rushed.
The book also touches on some darker themes and scenes, but they were handled perfectly. They added depth and intensity to the story without feeling overwhelming or making it difficult to continue reading, which I really appreciated.
And that ending… can we talk about a cliffhanger!! It was fantastic. It left me with so many questions and just enough tension that I immediately wanted to dive into the next book!
Overall, this was a highly enjoyable read that I would highly recommend to both new and seasoned readers, especially if you’re a fan of character-driven fantasy with compelling romantic tension.

3.5⭐️

This has all the basic and popular tropes of a baseline romantasy:

> Enemies to Lovers
> Gods & Demi-Gods
> Cursed MC
> Unique Magic
> Who Did This to You?
> Found Family

I was finding myself more interested in the characters and their interactions. The found family aspect, as there are numerous characters with their own unique powers and backstories. However, the FMC felt a bit too inconsistent - sometimes she is fearless wanting death, sometimes she is too scared to die, sometimes she is brave, sometimes she’s an absolute coward. The back and forth was grinding on my gears a bit. She felt very reckless and impulsive. I’m hoping to see more character development from her! However, I did really like her backstory (my weakness is characters with trauma and emotional baggage).

The world building is very weak. Most of the effort spent into giving names to a variety of gods but not much to the land and area itself. The writing feels very simple - it was a very easy and digestible read. A lot of just giving information to the reader rather than letting us infer things. This is a very easy read for someone just entering the romantasy genre but too easy for someone who is well read in this genre.

My last hot take is that the romance was RUSHED!! Too much insta lust. Dropping hints of a possible fated mates romance but not actually addressing those feelings? VERY quick to get intimate without enough tension, relationship building, or character building.

I feel that this is a solid and baseline effort into a new romantasy series. HOWEVER, I do not feel that this book series could make it out of the 3-4⭐️ range without working on writing development. More world building! Better romance! Now that the characters have hooked up in book 1, what more do I even have to look forward to?

Thank you to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for an arc! This is my honest review.

I ATE this up. I had hooked from the start and truly didn't want to put it down.

Shadow Mommy ✅
Demon Daddy ✅

Helaina Ironblood is a cursed princess and has been hidden from the world her entire life. After both her siblings die, she's exiled by her family. Hiding her began as a way to keep her safe and now her family has given up on her and her curse. They're sending her as far away as they possibly can to marry an unknown prince. Along the way, Helaina is captured by Theodon Wrenn. Theo believes Helaina and her curse are exactly what he and the demigod army he leads need to save the realm. They need to unlock Helaina's powers before it's too late and the Hell Gods get their hands on her. But to do so, Helaina must sacrifice her mortal life.

Helaina is such a fierce FMC. Life has been brutal to her. I could FEEL how suffocating her childhood and adolescence was. I could feel the sparks of hope and love she developed, the despair and hopelessness after her siblings died. And I could feel and understood her eventual resignation that nothing would ever be better.

When Theo plucked her from that life, she fought. She was depressed and physically weak, but she never once rolled over. I appreciated how much she fought back against Theo. She had been controlled to the max her entire life & wasn't gonna let some MAN control her again. Hell yeah, girl.

Throughout, I could feel her rage and determination to never go back to the way things had been. She never gave up, despite how tempting it seemed at times. Theo never once treated her like she's always been treated - fragile. He pushed and pushed and she kept going. I loved seeing her be treated like the badass she is. Did she hate him for it, sure did. But she needed it.

As much as I loved the main characters, the side characters were also endearing and impactful. This really had so many things I love - found family, female rage, strong FMC, intense sibling love.

The ending had me screaming for more.

Thank you NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for a copy of this ARC. All opinions are my own.

4.25🌟

I flew through the first 40% of this book without even realizing it.

Our FMC Helaina is a shadow-mommy who doesn't understand her powers. All she knows is that she was cursed by a God to destroy the world and has been hidden away by her parents her entire life for the safety of everyone. If she cannot be found, then she cannot be used to make the prophecy come true. She is buried beneath grief, guilt, shame and emptiness. The feels just leap from the page straight to the heart.

Theo is the commander of the Divine Allura, the militia fighting against the dark monsters that are trying to break down their wall. He knows of the prophecy and her power and abducts her to bring her back to their stronghold in Elkron. He has to convince her to train so she can work with his forces.

As soon as she is in Elkron, she is being hunted by dark enemies who want her power for nefarious things and she has to work with Theo and his people to stay alive. I wouldn't say this is enemies to lovers, but it's definitely.... animosity to lovers. I wish there had been more of a slow burn because the tension was great.

My favorite character though had to be Callum. He is one of the Troika (Theo and his 2nd and 3rd in command) and we get his POV as well as Helaina and Theo. He's murdery but huggable at the same time.

Now we wait for book 2.

Quotes from the ARC (final version may differ):

'She huffed a sarcastic laugh. That's how far things had gone, being abducted was a welcome alternative to the life she led.'
---

"If you treat someone like they're fragile, that's what they become, easily broken like glass."
---

"No vast space, void, or any army could keep me from hunting you down and slaughtering those who stood in my way."

There were a lot of things I really liked about The Bone Dagger. I absolutely devoured it in less than 24 hours. The magic system felt genuinely unique, which is saying something in an era where a lot of romantasy is starting to blend together in my brain like one long montage of shadow daddies and glowing hands. This one stood out.

I also really liked how the time hops were handled. Instead of info-dumping Heli’s tragic backstory in one dramatic monologue, it was peeled back in layers. We got crumbs. We got tension. We got slow reveals. Even though I clocked a certain villain pretty early (respectfully… that one I think we'll all see coming), I still enjoyed the ride.

Heli and Theo both felt layered and trauma-seasoned in ways that made them compelling. Heli’s depression especially was handled with care. She’s been through A LOT and still manages to be feisty and headstrong without being super annoying which is a delicate balance. Theo, on the other hand, took me a little longer to fully buy into and their relationship leaned a bit insta-lusty for my personal taste.

I am once again begging the romantasy community for a TRUE slow burn. I want YEARNING. I want prolonged eye contact across battlefields. I want tension so thick it needs a knife to cut. Please let these people pine for more than 300 pages before we get to the horizontal mambo. Maybe even make them wait until book two? Just a thought.

That said, I did enjoy them together, and I’m invested. My only lingering confusion is around the big bad’s motivation, I’m not entirely sure I grasp it yet, but I’m assuming (and hoping) that will unravel in the next book.

Nitpicks aside, I had a genuinely great time with this one and will absolutely be picking up the sequel.

The Bone Dagger is a strong debut fantasy that lays the groundwork for what promises to be an exciting series. Clara Rhodes creates an intriguing world filled with curses, monsters, ancient magic, and just enough mystery to keep you turning the pages.

Helaina has spent her entire life hidden away, knowing she was different but never truly understanding why. Feeling more like a prisoner than someone being protected, it's easy to understand why she resented those closest to her. When tragedy takes everything from her, she loses the will to keep going—until Theo enters her life and forces her to make a choice: live for something or die for nothing.

I won't lie—some of Helaina's interactions with Theo gave me a bit of whiplash. Her feelings and reactions toward him shifted so quickly at times that it pulled me out of the story and left me a little frustrated. That said, I really enjoyed Theo's role in challenging Helaina to stop seeing herself as a victim and realize that her loved ones didn't die in vain. Watching her slowly discover a purpose beyond her grief was one of my favorite parts of the book.

I also loved the dual timeline. The glimpses into the past gradually unraveled Helaina's history while adding emotional depth to everything happening in the present. It was a clever way to reveal secrets without slowing the momentum of the story.

Overall, The Bone Dagger delivers an engaging blend of fantasy, danger, and slow-building romance. While Helaina's character took some getting used to, the worldbuilding, unfolding mysteries, and compelling setup have me eager to see where this series goes next.

More reviews (and no fluff) on the blog http://surrealtalvi.wordpress.com/

This was an overall decent read. Yes, it fell into some romantasy clichés but in all there was some good character growth and a twist at the cliffhanger ending of this first book in the series.

Story: Princess Helaina has been hidden away most of her life after a Fae prince shared a fearsome prophecy about her future. But an error in judgement brings devastating repercussions, destroying her family in the process. Now, betrothed to a foreign prince, she is not expected to survive the journey to his kingdom. For there are those hunting her for the prophecy - including a cadre of dragon shifters.

The blurb above makes the book sound simplistic but there is a fair amount of complexity. Helaina is breaking under the burden of heartache at the beginning and through the book will find strength and a purpose. The scenes with her love interest are fairly cringeworthy but otherwise I did enjoy her character arc.

The side characters are ok - one gets a POV and I have to wonder if he will have a romance in the next book as a result since his scenes didn't really contribute to the story. The plot moves at a decent pace through there are a lot of training/leveling up scenes to get through before the climactic end. This is a book with an emphasis on emotion over action.

In all, I am looking forward to the next book in the series. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

The Bone Dagger brings you a forbidden desire, hope, and high stakes moment of an Ironblood born princess whose blood runs through a death god. Her power is a weapon, the key to stopping a divine that has lasted for years.

The dynamic of each character and epic world building was something I throughly enjoyed especially getting to know the history behind the demigods and what power they posses. Clara brings you a vision, keeping you invested into these characters and introducing you to a world that feels sharp and secrecy ready to explode of what this curse will bring to the table. It’s either going to be a salvation or ruin for all.

Theo is definitely going to be your next book bf and I absolutely loved him! The way he studies Helaina from head to toe, wondering if he has the strength to not get too close to her but the way he is willing to sacrifice for her was 🔥 and the “who did this to you” trope always gets to me 😩 and the way he always called her “little hellion” 🤭 hehe!

“He resembled what she thought angels might look like, the beautiful servants of the gods who welcomed dead souls into the ether.”

As you get closer to the end, you can feel each word and paragraph getting more tense and tense awaiting for more twist and turns that felt spine chilling! Clara is now a new favorite fantasy author of mine and I’m so looking forward to the 2nd book because I’m so anxious of where we are headed now!

Big thank you to Blackstone Publishing and Clara for the early copy! I look forward to the next! 🤍
