Daniel Maunz, the Author of “The Story of You”has written an intense, suspenseful and emotional novel. The Genres for this well-written story are Family Life Fiction, Contemporary Literary Fiction, Para-Psychology, and Suspense. The Author vividly describes the plot, and the dramatic, colorful, dark, flawed, complex and complicated characters. The first time Will Banfield found joy in his life was when he marries Anne, and has a baby boy Quince. Tragically Anne passes away after giving birth, and Will is left to bring up Quince. Will adjusts his job, and tries his best to bring up Quince. When Quince is four years old, Will is called up to pre-school, because of certain problems that Quince has. Will employs a speech teacher to help Quince verbally communicate.
Will notices that Quince seems to visualize things that Will doesn’t see. He feels that Quince has precognitive and postcognitive abilities. Quince seems traumatized be seeing certain things, and Will seems to figure out that they are things that have happened in the past or that will happen in the future. When Will tries to help change certain things that could occur, Quince seems to get physically ill.
This is an exceptionally suspenseful, emotional, and thought-provoking book, that I highly recommend for other readers. This has twists and turns, and I appreciate how the author discusses the deep emotional family contact between father and son, love, and hope.

I’ve been a fan of Daniel Maunz ever since reading his debut novel, which is one of my top five favourite books of all time. One of the things I love most about his writing is that you can’t really pigeonhole his books into a single genre, and The Story of Us is no exception.
The novel follows Will, a single father whose young son, Quince, is showing signs of delayed speech development. In an effort to encourage Quince to communicate, Will takes him on small local adventures. He soon recognises that Quince is selective with words, but more unsettlingly, those words don’t always reflect reality. While most of Quince’s visions appear to be rooted in the past, others seem to foreshadow devastating future events. When Will attempts to intervene and change the outcome, it’s Quince who pays the price. Faced with the knowledge that the future cannot be altered, Will must confront his own mortality as an inevitable event approaches... one that will change both of their lives forever.
What I loved most about this novel was its uniqueness, particularly the seamless fusion of reality and paranormal. The story is brilliantly paced, with tension steadily building towards a powerful climax. The characters are richly developed and incredibly easy to love, to the point where my heart was racing as the looming events drew closer. The ever-present sense of foreboding and foreshadowing kept me turning the pages; even though I knew what was coming, I kept hoping for a different outcome.
There were also so many small, beautiful details that stayed with me: Will and Quince bonding over lego, their friendship with Nora, and the emotional hospital scene with Quince’s mum. These moments grounded the story and gave it real depth.
The Story of Us was easily my favourite book of 2025, and it’s one that will stay with me for years to come.

The only problem I have with a book by Daniel Maunz is that there aren't enough of them. So you can imagine my surprise when I got a notice from Amazon that an author I follow (Maunz) has a book coming out on November 18th that I could pre-order. Even better, I got another notice from Amazon that the book would be shipped even sooner. When it came yesterday, I put aside the book I was reading and enjoying (which is something I have never done) to read "The Story of You".
Maunz's books don't fit into any particular category. All you really know beforehand is that they will keep you interested and make you think about them long after you read the last page. The Story of You is about a fathers' love for his son and how the love of a good partner and his gentle son can bring even the most broken heart back to life.
If I had to put this book into a single category, I would have to say paranormal. I got a sense of Stephen King's The Shining, which will be obvious to all who read it. But it also reminded me of 11/22/63 in that the past, or in this case the future, does not want to be tampered with and will punish anyone that tries.
Will Banfield is a grumpy lawyer who only finds happiness when he meets his future wife, Anne. When Anne died having their son, Quince, Will takes it upon himself to raise Quince on his own. He thinks that is making him a better father, not realizing that it takes a village, or in this case his family, to raise a child. Will doesn't notice that Quince is having speech problems because Will had been living in silence for most of his life. When Quinces' pre-school teachers point out that Quince is not speaking at the same level as the other children, Will seeks the help of Nora Glaspie, a speech-language pathologist. On the half hour drives to and from Ms. Nora's office, Will discovers that Quince has visions that he never dreamed possible.
The Story of You kept me on the edge of my seat until the last page. It was easy to follow because it has only three main characters. However, that doesn't mean it isn't filled with suspense. I had no idea how it was going to end until I actually got to the end. This was a real page turner.
The Story of You came out at the best time for me, as it solves many of my holiday shopping problems. All my reading friends will be getting a copy as their gift.

The Story of You is about a single dad, Will, and his struggles and successes raising his 4-year-old son, Quince. Quince's preschool teacher mentions that he has some speech delays so they go to speech therapy with Ms. Nora.
One day Will notices something unusual in Quince. The story delves into this unique trait in Quince which drives the rest of the story. No spoilers, but I can tell you that it is so exciting that you're going to want to kerp reading, even if you have things to do (like sleep).
One thing I loved about the story was that I felt like I knew Will and Quince. Also, their character growth was immense and Ms. Nora helped them both more that tjey could ever have expected. The final scenes had me teary.
If you like your fiction with a touch of paranormalness, you will love this book as much as I did.

This was a fascinating read for me, not only because I’m a parent, but because both of my boys are in speech therapy, and if this had been the reason they needed it, I would have been as scared as Will! The story is a slow burn thriller with a family plot revolving around Will’s love for his son and wanting to do anything and everything to help him and figure out why he’s having these visions and to properly explain them to others. Whenever Will tried to help stop one of Quince’s visions from coming true, Quince was the one who had to pay, which had me emotional. As a mother, this was a tough read because it made me think “what if.” I highly recommend this one if you enjoy paranormal fiction!

Daniel Maunz writes so beautifully that I was immediately drawn into the story and found some elements extremely relatable. The fear of not doing or being enough as a neurodivergent parent, the desire to have your child just be okay when professionals tell you something is wrong, and the drive and determination to help them succeed no matter what.
There we start differ as Quince has disturbing visions and the chilling suspense builds. Nora is a remarkable character and her caring contributions to helping Quince and Will are wonderful. I loved that Will always recognized the light in Quince and did his best to be a good father to his son.
Delivered with perfect timing this incredible book will stay with me forever and makes me fall in love with working with children with special needs all over again. They are the true gifts to this world and I hope to always be able to view the magic of life through their eyes.

This story will absolutely make you run the gamut of emotions!
I was so captivated by the growth of not only Quince, but Will as well, that it was hard to put down to sleep most nights.
This story follows an introverted father, named Will, as he tries to help his son, Quince, find his voice. Will has to step out of his comfort zone just as much as Quince to help him do this as they both become more outgoing and venturing out into world.
While finding his voice, Quince also starts to voice other things he has kept hidden. Will and Quince navigate the changes, twists, and turns together and come out stronger in the end.
Overall an amazing book! I was so interesting to see the changes in both characters and be witness to the miraculous changes as Quince finds his voice and place in the world.

This one surprised me in the quietest way. The Story of You starts off as a gentle, emotional story about a father just trying to do right by his little boy and then, little by little, it turns into something unsettling and impossible to shake the more you think about it. Will is raising four year old Quince on his own after losing his wife, and at first it seems like Quince is simply struggling with speech. But soon it becomes clear he’s seeing things no child should see. Watching Will navigate balancing fear, hope, and fierce love was heartbreaking and deeply real.
The tension builds slowly and quietly until you suddenly realize how much it has you in its grip. The supernatural elements are subtle but chilling, the twists caught me completely off guard, and the father and son bond is truly the heart of the story. Emotional, eerie, and unexpectedly tender. I loved it.

I read this book in one sitting. It’s got magical realism and shows the love of a father. I thought this book was imaginative. It is page turning in a “I need to find out what happens” way.

The dialogue between father and son is fantastic. I love how each chapter has hindsight thoughts of Will and then a narrative of the events that happen.

As I read the prologue I connected with Will. I am not unfeeling, but I’ve felt like the odd woman out and that everyone else is seeing something I’m not. A feeling I’m sure we’ve all felt at some point in our lives.
And then his story. It’s emotional. It’s uncomfortable. It’s heartbreaking at times. But it’s also a powerful story of a man trying desperately to connect with his son and the personal sacrifice or burden he’s willing to endure to do so.
It was a captivating mystery, what Quince was seeing and the emotion struggle Will had not being a part of it.
Their story has stayed with me after finishing the book. And I’d guess will for a while.

The Story of You by Daniel Maunz is an excellent novel I really enjoyed reading.
The story follows Will, who is raising his 4-year-old son Quince after his wife passes away giving birth.
Quince had trouble communicating and hires a speech therapist to help Quince.
There are some supernatural elements that I really enjoyed.
There are some twists and turns I did not see coming at all.
A story about so many things, but ultimately the love between a father and son.

There are some supernatural elements that I really enjoyed.
There are some twists and turns I did not see coming at all.
A story about so many things, but ultimately the love between a father and son.

What a unique story about a single father and his young son who has a special ability (no spoilers). There are paranormal elements embedded in the story that work well and truly captivate. There’s also an underlying sense of suspense throughout that kept me turning the pages.
Overall, I found The Story of You unexpected and thoughtful; a powerful story of fathers and sons and the growth each can impart on the other. So special.

A family drama about a single father and his devotion to his son. When Will starts his four-year-old son in speech therapy, a lot more comes out as Quince opens up about the visions he has. This was suspenseful and thought-provoking. I was hooked right into this story. I loved the paranormal elements. This was emotional with many twist. I really enjoyed it.

What a beautiful story about the love and bond between a father and his son. Their journey didn't start smoothly and was definitely bumpy at times along the way, but it was most definitely worth reading. It was thought-provoking and timely, and will be unforgettable for me.

April 29, 2026The Story of You by Daniel Maunz is a superb read. The story of a single father and his son is both a simple love story and a complicated journey. The characters are sincere and relatable. I especially loved how each chapter opened with the dad thinking of his next steps to approach his son’s issues and his constant self-assessment of being a “good” dad. This book is powerfully because you feel the emotions that the characters are experiencing. From beginning to end you won’t want to put it down. I highly recommend reading this book and sharing it.
