John Richard Wimber was a musician, charismatic pastor and one of the founding leaders of the Vineyard Movement, a neocharismatic Evangelical Christian denomination which began in the USA and has now spread to many countries world-wide.
This volume contains 24 short articles by the conference presenters. All are impressive and written in a easy-to-read summary style.
John Wimber in the section on prayer looks at intimacy under four headings: self-disclosure, being known by God, continual obedience to God and knowing God.
Douglas Groothuis discusses counterfeit spirituality. He points out that Shirley MacLaine in Dancing in the Light asserts, "I know that I exist, therefore I AM. I know that the God-source exists, therefore IT IS. Since I am part of that force, then I AM THAT I AM." She depersonalises God while deifying herself. Instead of recognising the distinction between God and creation, New Age spirituality claims, "All is one." This is monism. We can create our own reality. Groothuis states that in spiritual warfare with the New Age movement and the spirits behind it, "power encounters" should ensure.
John White states that many believers pursue prophets with the same motives as the world in seeking horoscopes. A prophet's main job is to announce the messages of God to sinful societies and to warn of what will happen if repentance does not take place. The messages are of warning, of instruction in righteousness and of hope.
