86: Origins – Before AshBefore Ash, before hope, there was the darkness.
The Ashcroft family has long been haunted by a curse that feeds on sorrow, leaving a trail of broken lives in its wake. Number 86 isn’t just a mark—it’s a legacy of grief, a shadow that waits patiently for its next victim.
Follow Robert as he uncovers the secrets buried in his family’s past, struggles against forces he barely understands, and fights to protect the life that may yet break the cycle. But some curses are patient, and some shadows refuse to die.
86: Origins – Before Ash is a chilling tale of fear, resilience, and the cost of defying a fate written in blood. A prelude to the horror, it shows that before a flicker of hope can shine, darkness must first be faced.

86: Origins – Before Ash by Edward Bowers is a gripping supernatural thriller that kept me engaged from start to finish. Overall, I really enjoyed this read and am excited to continue the series, especially knowing there’s a second book.
One thing I found myself wishing for was a clearer timeline, particularly during the journal entries. At times, it was a bit difficult to track when certain events were taking place, and a more defined structure would have helped bring everything together more smoothly.
The story begins with Henry during the war, where he makes a pact with a dark, shadowy presence, something that follows him home and sets the stage for everything that unfolds. From there, the tension builds as we see how this curse attaches itself to his bloodline and it’s clearly hungry.
One of the most intriguing moments for me was when Henry and Margaret are in the orchard and discover names and dates spanning both the past and the future. It added a chilling layer of mystery and made me question just how deep this curse truly goes.
As the story progresses, we watch the curse pass down to Henry’s son, Robert, and follow his relationship with Clara. Clara’s loyalty stood out she remained by Robert’s side no matter how far he seemed to slip away. Their storyline added an emotional depth that balanced the darker elements of the book.
I also appreciated the hints about the origin of the curse. When Robert discovers his grandfather’s journal, we begin to see just how far back this may go. With references to 1943 and even earlier dates like 1886, I’m very curious to learn where and when this all truly began.
I’ll definitely be picking up Book 2 to see how this story continues.
