James Auclair was just a young boy coming back from his fishing trip to the creek. He had his stringer of fine fish and was thinking about how fantastic a meal his mother would make with them. James had his pole and the family’s old double-barreled shotgun over his shoulder while making his way home. His mind was on supper when the sounds of gunfire shattered his peaceful day. James immediately knew his family was being attacked. This was raw new country, and people were aware of the dangers of living outside of civilization. Outlaws were the most dangerous problem, and they were here.
James burst into a horror story come to life when he ran into the yard of his family’s cabin. His brother and father were dead, and he watched his mother get murdered. James had to act fast to survive. He used his quick reflexes and his double-barreled shotgun to survive. James then had to deal with the awful aftermath of the murders and bury his entire family. After a day of grieving, James left the site of his nightmares with a few meager belongings and a heavy heart. He hitched up the old mare and took off to see the west his father had always dreamed of exploring. This was an extreme undertaking for a young boy who had just stepped into his teenage years. For James, it was the West or nothing, and no turning back.
A boy this young typically had no chance of survival in this wild land. James’s luck favored him when he saved a man named Driscol from being killed by a group of thugs. Driscol was a man who was quick with a gun, and he took James under his wing. This seasoned veteran of many battles knew this boy needed help and guidance if he was going to make it out here. Driscol invited James to come to his cabin, which was close by, since a major storm was brewing. James and Driscol became friends, and James stayed on at Driscol’s homestead through the winter. What surprised the older gunman was the aptitude that James had for gunplay. They bonded and had a few more adventures before James took to the road to fulfil his desire to venture westward.

A great story steeped in history.

An excellent read with really great characters. The story also shows the reader a more authentic west full of action and tragedy. I really enjoyed it and look forward to seeing what happens as the main characters keep traveling.
