You know it's going to be an epic experience when you get a map and pronunciation guide! I come across the opportunity online and jumped on it immediately. I loved the cover, it is slightly simplistic, but somehow so captivating, the colors are absolutely gorgeous, I would love to see a copy on my shelf one day!

- Military school (academy setting)
- Dragons
- Slow burn (Romance is not the main focus)
- Humanity needs to kill the last dragon to survive
- Mystery (So many secrets)
What worked absolutely amazingly was the deep background. The land, the culture, the military setting is very deep and still easy to understand. You have plenty of help and slow build to be able to follow the structure and systems, you get so many glimpses into the life of the military and also a little bit into the average life.
The dragon and the history of dragons, their skills and abilities is very well thought out, they all feel unique and what I felt was best about them was how balanced they are. They are not just overpowered beasts, they have some weaknesses that you get to know slowly.
The action starts slowly, but after knowing the plot that absolutely makes sense and I wish I was a little less antsy about seeing some actions. I absolutely recommend going slow in the beginning, savor all those details, because it speeds up so fast. Things escalate, you have to watch left and right, you will be squeezing a handle as you read for sure.
Considering that this is a debut book, an epic fantasy debut I was mind-blown. The read feels so well worked on, there is absolutely space to improve as there will always be, but for a first book this was absolutely incredible and so much better than I expected. I got excitement, mystery, interesting plot twists, a little bit of heartache and I can't wait to see more from Monty K. Rue!
I will say here, if you do not like your reads to be somewhat similar to other ones, I wouldn't recommend picking up The Last Dragon. You would absolutely feel similarities to The Empyrean series, and would end up struggling. I think the differences were very exciting and the similarities between the books were subtle, few and they made enough sense for me to be able to enjoy this story incredibly much. It is absolutely okay if similar stories are not your thing, and also okay if you love that! :)
My favorite quote:
"There are rules you must follow, tasks you must complete, and protocol you have to keep. One misstep, one doubt, can be the end of you. The end of us all. But above everything else, there's only one rule you must never forget." He surveys the newcomers who eagerly await the Corps creed, his hands behind his back.
He straightens. "Do not doubt." The words linger in the air. Words that have been drilled in me ever since the start and have become the foundation of who I am today.

I've finished reading my ARC copy of 'The Last Dragon' written by Monty K. Rue. This is a Romantasy and her author debut. It's also the first book in the Great Burn Chronicles.
"If you let yourself feel- you doubt, if you doubt- you're dead."
I've been following Monty for quite some time and I've been looking forward to reading this book so much. I can say it was definitely worth it, this story is amazing and so incredibly unique. And the ending.. I'm looking forward to the second book a lot!
"I feel like I'm splintering. Like every part of me is being pulled in opposite directions--loyalty, guilt, vengeance. Love."
This story is about Kazelius (Kazele/Zel). The story is completely written from his pov, but it's also about Nida his (best) friend and the members from his unit. Zel is drilled to be the perfect soldier fighting the treat of de dragons. It cost him a lot and it gets worse when he finds out there is an even bigger enemy. Will humanity survive?
"If your deeds don't serve humanity's best interest, then you are the enemy of humanity-- a curse on the world, a stain on the Diviner's creation."
I love the way the story is written, it reads so easy, comfortable. It's a story that builds, it gives you the feeling it's working to a climax and lets you feel the tension along the way. Although the soldiers are drilled to not feel emotions, the characters you follow do actually have them. Deep emotions that will let you feel with them, root for them and hope for them. And even the dragons will surprise you!
"Now, instead of us hunting it, the dragon is hunting us."
Zel is on a journey that seems to not end well, depriving himself from anything that could make his 'destiny' harder. It makes this story about accepting, about prioritizing, about finding others more important and believing you don't deserve anything. It's among other things a journey of acceptance, grief, fear and a lot of strength. It made me enjoy the story even more. I give it five stars!

Beta Reader Book Review 🤍

Divines… This was soooo f*ckin’ good. It def gave ALL the AoT - Fourth Wing - Divergent vibes, but so unique from the different dragon breeds to the soldier rankings. So original in its own way. I was literally on the edge of my seat the whole read ‘cause when that “Colossal Titan” scene happens (I loved all the lil references & similarities), NOTHING is the same anymore… And if you know Aot, you knowww not to get attached to anyone ‘cause omfg. Monty will really put you through it. From the action packed scenes to the deeper mysteries & heartache, it literally pulls you in & hold you in its jaws. It was literally playing like an anime inside my head & I did NOT want this season to end ‘cause the questions I still have & how it left off?!
Oh yeah, I need you to run that second season Monty!!
So addictive. So intense. So captivating!!
I can’t even imagine what the polished & edited version will be like, but I’m so excited to find out 🤍

Thanks so much to Monty K Rue for sending me an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. As always all thoughts and opinions written in this review are my own.
I am reading an early copy of the book so things could change between the e-ARC and the final version - I am planning on rereading the book because it was honestly just that enjoyable and im very excited for whatever we get next from Rue.
This is a very strong debut book, I really loved getting to read this and its honestly just shy of a 5 star. I think the comps of AOT & GOT are prefect. While you can tell that the author was inspired by these works this book is also very distict from those stories. I think this book will definetely get a spot in my favorites of the year.
I loved the writing style, there were some really beautiful and heartfelt quotes littered throughout the book and I can't wait to get a final copy to annotate. I think the characters were also really well written, this is also the type of romantasy that I tend to enjoy where its more focused on the fantasy world and plot but there are strong relationships between the characters. I also really liked that eventhough its romantasy the book has only from Zel's POV (the male lead) which I feel is pretty unique in this genre and I personally really appreciated it. I am very excited for book 2 - this book definetely ends on such a high note.
My only complaint is that sometimes I struggled with the setting. The worldbuilding on a whole is really great with regards to the dragons & the societal structures, however it felt a bit arbitrary how far places were from eachother which in some ways also impacted the story. But honestly this is such a minor thing and these are all things that can be fixed in the final version of the book.

Not going to lie, I might have teared up when I got the ARC email 🥹♥️. This book holds such a special place in my heart, for more reasons than I can even put into words.
Anyways, the review. Bear with me, this is going to be an essay, lol.
What a ride!! What an absolute rollercoaster from start to finish! Though I was a beta reader and was awestruck even then, the finished product is just far too better!!! 🤍🤍
We're talking The Last remaining Dragon that has proven itself to be too notorious to kill and the Humanity hell bent on making it happen. But there's so much more to the story. The characters, the world building, the lore, the plot, everything is just brilliant! The world building alone tells you how much care was put into detailing the story. 💙
Told through the perspective of Kazelius Aaran, our male protagonist who’s kind of an unreliable narrator and a man constantly at war with himself.
What to believe? Things he's seeing, or the narrative he's built his entire life around?
Who to trust? His own instincts or the people around him who've given him everything and made him into who he is?
Every decision carries weight. Trusting himself plants dangerous seeds of doubt, while listening to his training screams that doubt will get him killed. Honestly, the push-and-pull between his conscious and subconscious is the heartbeat of the story. It keeps you on edge throughout.
Watching trust slowly mend, the found family come back together, and Zel's growth alongside Nida and the rest of the unit? Absolute perfection. Chef’s kiss. 🤌🏽
But here’s the real genius: Monty knows how to sustain tension. The suspense is nonstop but never overwhelming; you get hints and answers sprinkled in, just enough to keep you hooked, but never the full picture. The stakes stay sky-high, and you’ll be holding your breath without even realizing it.
Then we have the dragons. And wow. These are not your run-of-the-mill, four-legged, fire-breathing lizards. Monty gives them species-specific behaviours and personalities that make them feel alive. They’re majestic, terrifying, tender, predictably-unpredictable! Basically characters in their own right. This was actually what drew me to the book in the first place, and I’m still in awe of how well it’s done. Definitely the most unique part of the world building!
And let’s talk emotions: chapters 36 and 38. Those chapters!!! If you somehow managed to keep your composure up until then, good luck. They hit like a freight train! Never forgiving Monty for the emotional damage it caused me. 😭
As for favourites: Well, Alex. Always Alex. (Sorry Zel, I promise I love you too.) But God! there’s just something so magnetic about Alex's razor-sharp mind and even sharper tongue. He wears jewellery, has tattoos, plays with knifes, what's there NOT to love about him??? He’s layered, intriguing, and dare I say, even more mysterious than Grogol himself. I’m ridiculously excited to see how his character develops moving forward.
And the end? The end?! One of the most unexpected twists I’ve read in a long, long time. I was screaming with delight, lol.
I think it goes without saying that this was an epic tale and I need the next book like yesterday. Please. I’m on my knees. 🥹

They’re majestic, terrifying, tender, predictably-unpredictable! Basically characters in their own right. This was actually what drew me to the book in the first place, and I’m still in awe of how well it’s done. Definitely the most unique part of the world building!
And let’s talk emotions: chapters 36 and 38. Those chapters!!! If you somehow managed to keep your composure up until then, good luck. They hit like a freight train! Never forgiving Monty for the emotional damage it caused me. 😭

I purchased this book because the instagam posts from the author and the synopsis were interesting. I liked seeing a male focused protagonist with a romantic plot line. I also have taken an acceptance to dragon related plot elements.
With this book, I liked it, but I found the book to have a lull portion right in the middle.
For an indie writer, this is not a bad book, and I am curious about book two. If you enjoy dragons and a male and female that are smart, you'll like this.

The last dragon is the first book in the series and OMG i really had a very great time reading this book .
The book has dragons 🐉 action 🏹, found family 😍and amazing world building ✨
I love every single character in this book .the writing style was very easy and at first i found the pacing a bit slow but as i read more the story got interesting and i was fully invested in it. I love how the author created a very amazing world of dragons and the tiny details she created is amazing 😍
The action scenes in this one is well written that it feels like i was standing there with the character 😍
The ending was so good that i craving more and it does end on a cliffhanger 🥹 so i am desperately want the second book in the series 😍
If you love high fantasy, dragons , action ,found family read this book ✨

What a ride!! What an absolute rollercoaster from start to finish! Though I was a beta reader and was awestruck even then, the finished product is just far too better!!! 🤍🤍
We're talking The Last remaining Dragon that has proven itself to be too notorious to kill and the Humanity hell bent on making it happen. But there's so much more to the story. The characters, the world building, the lore, the plot, everything is just brilliant! The world building alone tells you how much care was put into detailing the story. 💙
Told through the perspective of Kazelius Aaran, our male protagonist who’s kind of an unreliable narrator and a man constantly at war with himself.
What to believe? Things he's seeing, or the narrative he's built his entire life around?
Who to trust? His own instincts or the people around him who've given him everything and made him into who he is?
Every decision carries weight. Trusting himself plants dangerous seeds of doubt, while listening to his training screams that doubt will get him killed. Honestly, the push-and-pull between his conscious and subconscious is the heartbeat of the story. It keeps you on edge throughout.
Watching trust slowly mend, the found family come back together, and Zel's growth alongside Nida and the rest of the unit? Absolute perfection. Chef’s kiss. 🤌🏽
But here’s the real genius: Monty knows how to sustain tension. The suspense is nonstop but never overwhelming; you get hints and answers sprinkled in, just enough to keep you hooked, but never the full picture. The stakes stay sky-high, and you’ll be holding your breath without even realizing it.
Then we have the dragons. And wow. These are not your run-of-the-mill, four-legged, fire-breathing lizards. Monty gives them species-specific behaviours and personalities that make them feel alive. They’re majestic, terrifying, tender, predictably-unpredictable! Basically characters in their own right. This was actually what drew me to the book in the first place, and I’m still in awe of how well it’s done. Definitely the most unique part of the world building!
And let’s talk emotions: chapters 36 and 38. Those chapters!!! If you somehow managed to keep your composure up until then, good luck. They hit like a freight train! Never forgiving Monty for the emotional damage it caused me. 😭
As for favourites: Well, Alex. Always Alex. (Sorry Zel, I promise I love you too.) But God! there’s just something so magnetic about Alex's razor-sharp mind and even sharper tongue. He wears jewellery, has tattoos, plays with knifes, what's there NOT to love about him??? He’s layered, intriguing, and dare I say, even more mysterious than Grogol himself. I’m ridiculously excited to see how his character develops moving forward.
And the end? The end?! One of the most unexpected twists I’ve read in a long, long time. I was screaming with delight, lol.
I think it goes without saying that this was an epic tale and I need the next book like yesterday. Please. I’m on my knees. 🥹

First and foremost, this book was absolutely incredible. A six-star read for me, hands down. I have yet to read a book told entirely from the MMC’s point of view, and when I tell you I devoured it — I ate it like it was my last meal.
The plot, the twists and turns, the love, the lore, and not to mention ZEL. Where do I even begin? He is now the love of my life, and we’re having a June wedding. He is absolutely everything to me. The things I would do for this man are both unholy and will have me sent to the gallows. He is fierce, he is strong, he is everything I need in a MMC. His development, his lore, his soul… I simply love him, your honor.
NIDA. MY GIRL. She is one badass FMC. She is one of my all-time favorite FMCs now. I can’t live without her; she is tender, soft, but at the same time will kill you with a dagger in the blink of an eye. I loved her from the moment she was introduced in the book.

Do you know, I love dragons and I love love... this book has both 😁 It's making me a happy girl.
It was like almost a year I asked to be on the authors arc-team and guess what, lol, it happened like a few weeks ago. Last few days I have devoured this book in between real life stuff. I must say, in the beginning I foind it a bit slow to get into this lne but after a few more chapters I was addicted. There's a lot of tension, and I also shed some tears. There is a pinch of love but it has to grow so it's a slow burn.
But overall I'm super enthousiastic and ready to pre-order this book! For me it's a 4,5 star 🌟 read and like I said, can't wait for the sequel! So hurry up @montykayrue! 🥰🥰🥰🥰

What stood out most to me was experiencing the story through a male perspective. The chemistry between characters is equally compelling, not just in romance but in friendships, tensions, and shifting loyalties.

I really enjoyed *The Last Dragon*! 🐉 The first half is a bit slow, but that time is well spent on worldbuilding, getting to know the characters, the Corps, and the fascinating history of dragons. Then the second half takes off—so much happens, it even had me in tears 😭.
And that ending… ⛰️ I can’t wait for book two!
Only downside: I spotted a handful of typos (about 5), which pulled me out for a moment. Not a dealbreaker though.
Also, if you *need* spice in your reads, this isn’t it—romance is a subplot and Monty K. Rue writes zero-spice books. 💔🔥🚫

I really liked The Last Dragon! The idea of humanity against dragons immediately drew me in, and while it took a little time for the story to fully hook me, it ended up delivering great plot development and plenty of surprises.
It’s told from a male POV, which is refreshing for the fantasy romance genre. The protagonist starts as a soldier hardened by grueling training and battles, but as the story unfolds, we see more of the man beneath the armor. His emotional growth is one of the best parts of the book. The human finally peeks through the soldier, even if only for a moment before the next twist hits.
A strong debut with heart, action, and depth. 👏👏👏

Although I cannot say too much about this one...It was definitely one of my favorites so far this year and IT'S A BETA READ. I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE THE FINISHED VERSION.
The Last Dragon hooks you immediately in the beginning and does not loosen its claws. Monty K. Rue is a great writer who pulls you along on this adventure and introduces captivating characters and conflicts that you'll be excited to try and figure out before the MC can.
There's some romance that hopefully will grow in the future and the epic fantasy vibes with the dragons are unforgettable.
More to come later...but I cannot wait for you all to go on this dragon fantastical adventure with us!!

Okay I absolutely LOVED this book! It’s such a great slow burn, high stakes dragon fighter Romantasy. You get a strong military leader MMC who is a legend among the base, but is also struggling with PTSD from previous battles and loss. The depth of this MMC and him having such a big heart in a broke soul… chefs kiss perfection. He may be my favorite MMC now. A strong FMC who is caring but also determined and brave. I love the big emotions and care between the MCs, even in the despair of unlikely hope. That slowwww burn comes with deep true sacrificial love that felt earned. Found family is perfection in this. Being there, trusting, relying, having a home in people.

Adoro lo protectora que es con Zel y la manera en que ambos se cuidan. Su romance es un slow burn, de una vez te aviso. Pero la tensión de friends-to-lovers es deliciosa. Zel integra a Nida en su vida de manera tan sutil que, si no prestas atención, podrías pensar que no pasa nada. Sin embargo, entre líneas, ella se convierte en su todo. Su dinámica, especialmente hacia el final, es simplemente hermosa.

Aquí el worldbuilding es sorprendente. ¡Especialmente los dragones! Monty debuta con esta novela y, como lector, te aconsejo tomar en cuenta esto, al final de cuentas los escritores llevan un proceso y esta primera novela no está exenta de los pequeños detalles que todo autor mejora con el tiempo y la experiencia. Eso sí, supera a muchos que con más de una novela no han logrado lo que Monty sí. Puedo ver el enorme potencial que tiene su pluma, es una autora a la te aconsejo seguir y apoyar, porque habrá un día en que sus historias nos sorprenderán aún más.
Hace exactamente un año yo estaba haciendo lectura beta del segundo borrador de esta novela, en aquel entonces estaba fascinada por la historia y no podía esperar a ver el resultado. Hoy puedo decir que termino este libro con una lágrima de orgullo y muchas ganas de leer el segundo libro (que ahora mismo está en proceso). La novela no está disponible en español, pero si tienes cierta experiencia leyendo en inglés te aseguro que la historia es bastante amigable para quienes no tenemos el inglés como primera lengua.

Zel is our protagonist, and I loved that the entire story is told solely from his perspective. A soldier on the verge of death, his mission is to secure peace for a world scarred by endless war.

Haunted by fear and guilt, Zel’s journey becomes compelling as we witness him deconstructing his own notions of the world and himself. We wonder about his imminent death, his past, his fears, and the consequences of his choices. And then there’s Nida, slowly becoming part of his life.

One of my absolute favorite aspects of this book: Nida.

Nida is a queen! She is everything I’ve wanted in a female character—versatile, tender, kind, yet fierce when needed. I adore how protective she is of Zel and the way they care for each other. Their romance is a slow burn, but the friends-to-lovers tension is delicious. Zel integrates Nida into his life so subtly that if you’re not paying attention, you might miss it. Yet between the lines, she becomes his everything. Their dynamic, especially near the end, is simply beautiful.

The dragons are astonishingly well-crafted—each species with unique strengths, weaknesses, and behaviors. Even their biology differs in fascinating ways. Pay close attention to the geographical and historical details in the early chapters; they enrich the experience immensely.
📚 Final Thoughts
Monty debuts as a writer with this novel and, as a reader, I advise you to keep this in mind—after all, writers go through a process, and this first novel is not exempt from the small details that every author improves with time and experience. That said, she surpasses many who, even with more than one novel, haven’t achieved what Monty has. I can see the enormous potential in her writing; she’s an author I recommend you follow and support, because there will come a day when her stories will surprise us even more.
A year ago, I beta-read the second draft of this story, and I was captivated then. Today, I finish the published book with tears of pride and an eagerness to dive into the sequel (currently in progress). Though the novel isn’t available in Spanish, if you have some experience reading in English, you’ll find the story very approachable.

The characters are amazingly developed, and you can really tell how much time and thought went into their relations. I feel like Monty has a big pinboard covered in string just to keep track of things while she writes. They all have complex but understandable relations. I absolutely love how the characters are not just driven and grow for the plot. Still, our MC also grows to accommodate the needs of the situation of the characters he has relationships with. Personally, I find it very impressive how well it is done, and it takes a literary master to form all of that character depth.
The plot varies a lot depending on what part of the story you are in. It only lost my attention once, which is very impressive because I am beyond the attention span of a goldfish; I am a potato. There is a ton to this story, and I did predict a lot of it, but the characters had me guessing every move. I built little profiles in my mind for everyone, trying to piece together who each person is and their goals in such a broken world. Because of the story, my opinions on the characters definitely changed by the end, and it definitely had me in shock at multiple points. There is also so much world lore over the dragons and history, making me crave a prequel or five.
This story is a long emotional ride, and I will not forget it. This world is cemented into my brain. It took just enough from other stories to give that beautiful fantasy feel and story you’re ever so familiar with to be very unique in its own right too. The characters are amazingly developed, and you can really tell how much time and thought went into their relations. I feel like Monty has a big pinboard covered in string just to keep track of things while she writes. They all have complex but understandable relations. I absolutely love how the characters are not just driven and grow for the plot. Still, our MC also grows to accommodate the needs of the situation of the characters he has relationships with. Personally, I find it very impressive how well it is done, and it takes a literary master to form all of that character depth.
The plot varies a lot depending on what part of the story you are in. It only lost my attention once, which is very impressive because I am beyond the attention span of a goldfish; I am a potato. There is a ton to this story, and I did predict a lot of it, but the characters had me guessing every move. I built little profiles in my mind for everyone, trying to piece together who each person is and their goals in such a broken world. Because of the story, my opinions on the characters definitely changed by the end, and it definitely had me in shock at multiple points. There is also so much world lore over the dragons and history, making me crave a prequel or five.
This story is a long emotional ride, and I will not forget it. This world is cemented into my brain. Trials abound. Hardships toughen resolve. Characters remind you why humanity is the end-all-be-all to any fantasy read.
The story that Monty K. Rue has created with 'The Last Dragon' is built in a warrior class that has the reader choosing divisions and wondering which faction they would reside in were they to traverse the hallowed footsteps of the Corps leaders before them. The twists have you hunting for plot clues as you follow along the MMC's story line, and without a doubt, wondering if you too would survive the hardships that he (and those around him) suffers along the way.
Would I recommend? : Easily yes. With surprising twists and action-packed sequences, fans of The Hunger Games, the 100, and Fourth Wing will find similar delights in the pages of this story. I found plenty of references to the 100 that had me remembering why the end of the world/deadly trials tropes are some of my favorite reads!

And catching this elusive dragon is anything but easy for the Corps and their cadets.
While the idea of humanity vs the dragons that desecrated their lands seems to be a simple trope, readers will find the story is much deeper than an easy fantasy plotline. La Rue describes the world of Karalia in vivid imagery and crafts characters meant to harden your heart and break your resolve through trials tested and villains aplenty.
When Nida enters back into Zel's life, his world in the Corps and his place in it, is tossed upside down. The chemistry between the characters is built on a two-sided coin of a past friendship with past heartaches and rekindling old flames into new uncharted territory.
But more than the MMC/FMC chemistry, The Last Dragon has found family APLENTY. Every unit of the Corps carries within it characters meant to be more than side pieces on a page. They're well-crafted, placed perfectly for their purpose, and made to ensnare and lock in the reader.
I found this book to be enjoyable from the very first page. Places like the training grounds were written that you felt the dirt on your feet or heard the sound of blades colliding. The Market was crafted with exotic vendors and noises that had you traversing the wares and smelling the food as Zel and Nida traversed from cart to cart. And the characters had me rooting for their heroic arcs or sinking for their downfalls.
Everything about this story was so well done for a debut in a series, and I'm highly grateful I got to read it! Stars speed to all the readers to come but remember - NEVER LET YOUR GUARD DOWN.

*I received an ARC of this and in no way has that influenced my opinion of this book*
I was originally going to rate this 4 stars, however the ending amped it up to a 5. It took me a little to get into the story but as soon as those little seeds of doubt started to show up, I was more eager to continue.
I will try to review without spoiling this but everything I want to write is a spoiler.
I will start by say this for me is unlike like any other fantasy romance I've read. From what I've been seeing, yes, this does have a few similarities to fourth wing as I'm sure many other military based dragon books would have. But I personally wouldn't compared to two. In saying that, this does give similar vibes to Divergent, Attack on Titian, Hunger Games, and How to Train your Dragon.
This story has quite a few layers. It is detailed, well thought out and planned. The fighting scenes are great. At points, some of the world building did confuse me a bit, but the story was easy to follow. There is deceit, yearning, betrayal, lose, growth, reluctant acceptance, forgiveness, uncertainty and secrets.
You can see/feel the amount of time and effort that went into writing this. The sheer amount of detail and planning is evident in the pages of written words. Not to mention the dedication to the characters and the story.
I love the Dragons. Before reading, based on information obtained by Monty, my fav was Stonetails, with Silverscales being a close second, however, after having read a specific chapter (iykyk), umm....no thanks, I will upgrade my favorite to Silverscale.
Loved that the slow burn romance between Zel and Nida was in fact slow. The yearning and tension between them two was well planned. A childhood friendship turned to more....
I love all the characters in unit seventeen: Zel, Nida, Eryca, Ilian, Raumen, Alex, Sam. They're all so different but they play off each other really well. The banter, fights, collective agreements and disagreements, wariness, support, comes off as natural.
I do want to mention Alex though. He comes off as a self-absorbed entitled cocky bastard who would throw you under the bus if it saved his own skin, but I really liked him. I feel there is so much more to his story and why he is the way he is. It hurt to see him being left out, even if it was his fault...
I enjoyed reading this book. The ending left me wanting more, and I have many questions.
I really appreciate this having a glossary, lore and pronunciation guide, otherwise I would have struggled. especially with the names.
I recommend this book and I can't wait for book 2.

I really, really enjoyed this book and I will be buying the physical copy when it’s released (in just two days!!). I honestly can’t wait for book no. 2!
It’s been quite some time since I read a book from a male POV, but I really liked it. The dragons in this book also struck a chord with me, I love dragons and always have. So, reading a book about humans killing all of them made me a tiny bit angry to be honest.
The way Monty cleverly makes you doubt Kazelius as a narrator is *chefs kiss* because you get his pov, his thoughts, his history. But when you really start to look and think about his world and what is said and done by the other’s, you start to realize that he is not to be trusted. Was I sometimes a little fed up with him? Yes, Did I still love the characters and the story? Also, yes. Then you get some answers but not the full picture and that my friends is what keeps you hooked!
The yearning the poor Kaz has for the mfc really captured me and sat there muttering to my phone “kiss already!!!!"
This book didn’t quite capture me in the beginning as I thought it would, since I’m such a big fan of dragons! But that is probably more on me, as I’ve been in a horrible reading slump lately.. But boy oh boy, did this book second half make up for its slightly slow start!
I do have some minor complaints and that’s that it was a little bit slow in the beginning. At times I also found it hard to navigate where everything was and how far apart the different locations were. But that is honestly not a big thing, and the map will be helpful! Other than that, the world building is really great, and the characters were very well written.
If you love fantasy, dragons, action, found family and romance - without actually being in the bedroom with the characters (if you know what I mean) then this book is for you!!

The Last Dragon by Montey K. Rue is full of plot twists, betrayal, deceit, and (most importantly) hope in a time of uncertainty. It follows Kazel, our MMC who's POV we read throughout the entire novel, as he learns that nothing is as it seems in his life as he is dying from dragon poison after surviving an attack that took his mother's life and destroyed his village. The beginning provides the foundation to the entire story with world building as we navigate a school for war that teaches its recruitments how to battle, and hopefully survive, against their greatest enemy: dragons. While slower to start, it provides crucial details in understanding the cause of the war on dragons and establishes the land we are in. Monty K. Rue does an excellent job of bringing the setting to life in a way that makes so the reader can walk alongside the characters in their journey. As the story progresses, we are faced with heavy themes of loss and deceit, because what else would one find in the middle of a war that threatens the fate of humanity? Oh, and don't even get me started on the | destruction that chapter 36 reaped on my heart. I had goosebumps! | cried! I'd definitely. say this was more of a fantasy with romance versus a full on romantasy as the slow burn was very slowly burning, but once the feelings hit, oh my... "I thought I had forgotten my old life, but Nida gave me something a dying man should never have-hope. Even if she is-if she is poison-then I don't want the antidote." MY HEART! And with the plot twists, just when I thought I had things figured out, the story went into an entirely different direction! If you enjoyed Fourth Wing and Attack on Titan, this book would give you all the vibes!

The Last Dragon is set in a dark and dangerous world where dragons have brought humanity to the brink of extinction. Our main character, Kazelius Aaran (Zel for short) has lost his home and his family, and is slowly dy*ng from a dragon’s poison when the story starts. All he has left is the Corps, which has trained him never to doubt, never to feel, because they’re the only ones standing between the enemy and the end of everything.
I think anyone can relate to the walls Zel has had to put up in order to survive some truly brutal things, and the conflict he faces as those walls slowly come down is heartbreaking and real. There’s a loveable (some more than others…*cough* Alex *cough*) cast of side characters that help make that happen, and of course the romantic interest, Nida. She is the catalyst for so much of the story; I loved her inquisitiveness, gentle heart, and optimism even in this cruel setting.
The unfolding mystery was my favorite part of the story. We get the sense early on that things are not quite as we’ve been told, and uncovering those clues and seeing how they fit together was so satisfying. The world building really shines here, especially the detail put into the different kinds of dragons, their behaviors, and appearances. Pay attention cuz it’s all connected!! The ending really pops off and I cannot wait to see what happens in the sequel.
This was a beautiful story about breaking free—from corruption, manipulation, and the lies we tell ourselves because they feel necessary to survive—and realizing what we truly live for. If you’re a fan of Attack on Titan and Fourth Wing, you don’t want to miss it!
