Disguises of the Divine

Rate this book
We were enemies long before magic chained us together.

Dorian Blackwell is every inch the war-scarred, emotionally unavailable genius I don’t need in my life.

Cold eyes. Sharp tongue. Absolute nightmare in a dueling circle.

So of course the academy pairs me with him the minute my magic explodes into existence.

Now we’re bound by a cursed artifact, forced into late-night missions, secret libraries, and whispered spells that feel too much like foreplay.

He’s infuriating—until he saves me. Trains me. Bleeds for me.

Until his voice is the only one that calms the storm inside me.

But the prophecy doesn’t just tie our magic together—it promises we’ll destroy each other.

And just when I’m sure I’ve fallen for him—

I find out I’m the key to destroying everything he’s sworn to protect.

And I can’t tell if breaking it will save us—or finish what fate started.

First off, I really enjoyed the concept of this book. I thought the idea of it was great. The story was great at first and then it was just confusing as there was no set time line or story building with certain aspects.

So the first chapter starts off with Callie getting her magic. The second comes from Dorian's perspective on how he has to now train her. The next chapter they go into a mirror maze to find the artifact. while in there, there is a tug of the power between Callie and Dorian and they end up in a spicy scene. Ok, I can get behind this... Magic causing some "pulls", I can get down with that. But here is my thing, how long since her magic came about to finding the artifact did she train? Then we meet another character and he uses his observations to get what he wants. They are on a mission to find all the artifacts/links and figure out what is going on. We have a villain of course and the pull of magic still between out MFC and MMC where there are multiple "spicy" moments through the book. Some of them fit, while others are out of place I felt for the story. Then toward the end, there is a major battle scene but the MFC and MMC end up being "spicy" while in another dimension and their clothes are gone but then get back to the regular dimension with clothes??? HOW?

I felt that this book could have used more story telling on some of the charters that play a role in the story line. Like why are they evil? And there is a spot between the MFC and MMC at the end that I would have expected to have happened long before I had thought in my head that it happened but wasn't on paper. I really liked the idea of this book and it has such great potential. Some areas are fantastic and I couldn't put it down, while others had me re-reading to see if I missed something as there are gaps with the way the story flowed.

Overall, it wasn't a bad book and I was happy the author provided me with a copy to read.

2.5 stars rounded up

I signed up for this ARC because the blurb really hooked me, as did the tags. Enemies to lovers, slow burn, steamy, dark romantasy? Yes please!

Sadly, it didn't live up to the promises. I have SO MANY questions left unanswered. I really wanted to love this book and I appreciate being able to review the ARC via Booksprout because I know how hard the whole process is. Unfortunately, it all feels a bit rushed, with a lot of missing info and things suddenly happening that don't entirely make sense.

This is a fast burn, fast-paced, spicy fantasy adventure that tended to lose me along the convoluted path, with new surprises jumping out like phantoms and wraiths, trying to trip the reader up. I didn't feel like Callie and Dorian were enemies at all - it seemed like he was a total stranger, aloof and very reluctant at first. But it's definitely a fast burn as they're already intimate by chapter 3, and magically bound to one another not too much later in the book. It was definitely steamy with a lot of action on and off the battlefields!

I think there is a LOT of potential here, but it's very much still a diamond in the rough.

"I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.” Disguises of the divine. The protagonists begin as adversaries long before fate and magic bind them together. Dorian Blackwell embodies every trait the narrator wishes to avoid: a battle hardened, emotionally distant prodigy whose cold precision and sharp temperament make him a formidable, if exasperating, presence. Naturally, the academy assigns him as her partner the moment her own volatile magic awakens.
Linked by a cursed artifact, they are thrust into clandestine missions, hidden archives, and spellwork charged with dangerous tension. Though Dorian’s demeanor is infuriating, his loyalty and sacrifice gradually reveal a different side one that becomes her anchor when her powers threaten to spiral out of control.
Yet the prophecy entwining their magic carries a darker warning: not only does it bind them, it foretells their mutual destruction. Just as she realizes her feelings for him, she learns she may be the catalyst for the downfall of everything he is sworn to protect. Now she must decide whether breaking their bond will save them or fulfill the destiny that has been set in motion. A must read series!💛

A beautiful fantasy of love and magic!

This is the story of two young people in an Academy. Callie and Dorian. Callie has always been invisible, barely any magic, so when it finally hits, boy does it ever! That’s when she ends up being trained by Dorian, someone very well practiced in the art of magic. The characters are very different. Callie tends to be very brash, whereas Dorian is very collected. I really enjoyed reading this and was sad when I finished it. This has a very engaging plot, the characters all grow, well, the students anyway. And of course, we have the heartfelt sigh at the end.

I was into the story at first but then the timeline didn’t make sense.
Did they pass their 7 day trial?
How many days passed in the story?
Some parts I enjoyed and the rest was confusing, would have liked to have more reason to dislike the mean girl and know what her motive was for causing everything to fall apart.
If the timeline made sense and some parts didn’t feel off then I would rate it higher but 2 it is for now.
Thank you for the opportunity to read the story, even if some parts didn’t make sense to me.

I really had a hard time putting this book down. I had to know what happened. I loved that Callie's powers finally awoke and that she became the key to breaking the curse. She was the Chosen and Dorian was her Protector and together they saved the world, freeing their fellow students. Great read!

I really fell in love with this book. It pulled you in from chapter one. Thinking expecting guessing wrongly. This is most definitely a very quick enemies to lovers. Ani mean quick 😂 but I have to say this world building is so so good. You just can’t help but love the characters.

Magical Bond
Callie and Dorian. A force that defies logic when their magic comes together. Their bond isn’t just from the heart, it’s from the way their magic melds together. They are a force to be reckoned with and evil should fear what they’ve become.
