As a writer, I’m always on the lookout for resources that help me craft characters who feel real—characters who don’t just exist on the page but breathe, think, and make choices that resonate with readers. I was fortunate to receive an advance reader copy (ARC) of Creating Compelling Characters, and it proved to be a smorgasbord of ideas for developing rich, multi-dimensional characters.

I found this book immensely helpful in my own novel, particularly in shaping characters who feel alive and authentic. The exercises throughout the book are a standout feature, providing practical ways to apply the concepts rather than just absorbing theory. Working through them made me reflect more deeply on my characters’ motivations, conflicts, and personalities, ultimately strengthening my writing.

While I personally found Amy Jones’ book on Character Arcs & Archetypes even more insightful, that one lacks exercises, which is where Creating Compelling Characters excels. This book is hands-on, making it ideal for writers who want to actively build and refine their characters as they go.

Whether you’re an aspiring writer or a seasoned novelist looking for fresh inspiration, Creating Compelling Characters offers plenty of tools to enhance your storytelling. If you want to develop characters who linger in the minds of readers long after they’ve finished your book, this is a great place to start.
