Detective Matthias Honeywell, Erie City Police #5

Matthias and his girlfriend photographer Emma, who is recovering from being shot, are en route to Emma’s home turf of Washington County, Pennsylvania, to visit her old friend Eric and her troubled sister Nell. When they arrive at Eric’s property both are nowhere to be found and they go in search. In the process they meet up with Sonny Jones, a developer who has been trying to acquire Emma and Nell’s family land. It seems he has gained Nell’s agreement much to Emmas’s dismay. The following day Sonny is found dead, Nell is still missing but both Eric and Emma are in the frame for the murder. Although Matthias is out of his jurisdiction and has a difficult relationship with the lead detective who he’s previously worked with in Erie, he feels duty bound to keep an eye on the investigation to protect the woman he loves and safeguard Nell and Eric.

I like the idea of this latest novel in the series as there are loose ends that need following up after the last book, but I greatly miss the atmosphere of Lake Erie which is a big feature of the series. Sadly, this one lacks that element. The investigation is a personal one for Matthias and Emma as they search for Nell and try to get the help she’s so desperately needs. There’s a lot of running around hither and thither as well as pain and heartache which the author conveys well. There are some good plot twists and the ending is a suspenseful as well as sad.

It’s quite slow compared to the other books and because Matthias isn’t the lead officer as it’s not his jurisdiction, it doesn’t work quite so well for me. I think you can only carry the incompetence of Honeywell’s former colleague so far before it enters unbelievable territory especially with a mounting body count. There’s an awful lot going on, perhaps a bit too much for my taste.

However, I still want to continue the series if that’s the author’s intention as I really like the lead characters and I would like to know what happens next. Being back in Lake Erie would be good too!

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to HarperCollins, One More Chapter for the much appreciated early copy in return for an honest review.

At this point, just go back and read my previous reviews of Annette Dashofy’s Matthias Honeywell series, copy and paste. I keep thinking, “Okay. She’s going to write something that I’m not going to like or at least not love as much as the previous books. Then I will finally give her something less than a 5-star review.” This is not that book.

What I loved even more about this book was this had a completely different feeling to it. It was not the standard “the police have a case” novel. Instead, Dashofy has written a more personal mystery. Detective Honeywell isn’t looking for a murder mystery. He just wants to help his girlfriend’s sister that is battling with addiction. That is heavy enough. But the bodies keep piling up. If they don’t want Matthias involved, they should stop blaming people he loves for the deaths.

There is someone from Matthias’ past that complicates matters. Just as you think they are moving past things, one simple sentence changes the dynamics yet again.

And in the midst of all of this, Ms. Dashofy has us deal with what it is like having someone you care about dealing with alcohol and drug addiction. I have several people that I know and love that have or are currently going through this. My wife’s family has lost a family member to addiction. This novel had a personal side that was underlying throughout the entire book. It was handled beautifully. The fears. The emotions. All so well written.

Two books ago in the series, I declared Annette Dashofy as the Queen of Mystery/Thrillers. With her last book in the series, I declared her the entire Monarchy of Mystery/Thrillers. With the emotions and subject matters in this book, the 5th book in the series, I am declaring her the Queen of all Fiction. Not just mysteries.

If you have not read Annette Dashofy, what are you doing with your life? Seriously.

I received this ARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an unbiased review.

Buckle up, it's a wild ride! A week or so after Emma and Cassie are shot and Emma ends up with a serious concussion, she gets a call from her lifelong best friend, Eric. Her sister Nell is back, staying with him. She and Matthias head off to her hometown to find Nell and Eric missing and Eric's phone still in his house. The more they dig around the more concerned Emma becomes. Just after a body is found near Emma and Nell's family homestead, she gets a call from Eric, but they need to stay until the local police allow them to leave. This is not Detective Matthias Honeywell's jurisdiction, but since he and Emma come under suspicion, then Eric is arrested and Nell goes AWOL again, they must, of course investigate. As the bodies pile up and the lead investigator, a former Erie County detective with a history with Matthias butt heads, concern for Nell and Eric increase until we come to crashing crescendo. No spoilers, but my heart was beating out of my chest and I think I held my breath for a chapter or three!
This is not the typical fast-paced Detective Honeywell adventure, it builds somewhat slower because Matthias is out of his jurisdiction, but in my opinion it is richer as a result. We see Matthias and Emma's relationship grow in a different way as this is more Emma's story, with him playing a supporting, but central role. I love how the geography of the area plays such an important part of the story. I will be happy to see them back in Erie for the next book, but this journey was so critical to really helping readers connect to Emma and understand her in a deeper way.
In case you missed it, I loved this book. I thought it was excellent, dark and gripping, yet hopeful.

3.5* The author didn't do the best job with her killer, unfortunately. It was pretty obvious by how little they were on the cops' radar.

This book follows on from the previous one with the vet shot up at his clinic, whose wife is a cop. She makes cameo appearances here, and the civilian who helped her in the previous book is the female lead here, and the male lead is her former work partner. And he's out of his jurisdiction.

So, an on-the-surface successful guy is found offed. Who inherits his business? His wife? His secretary? His foreman? Who's a suspect? You'd think the usual suspects, right? Kind of, but the investigating cop is a bit of a plonker and has history with the out-of-his-jurisdiction cop and the bee in his bonnet means his brain isn't always working. So, not a lot of progress is made and bodies conveniently pile up. Still the bee means that he's blinkered. Yawn.

The tale gets there, but it felt a bit too unbelievable.

Another good novel in the Detective Matthias Honeywell series set in Pennsylvania. Honeywell travels to his girlfriend's home town looking for Emma's sister. Nell has a drug habit and is using again. But the pair get caught up in a murder investigation run b ya Trooper with whom Matthias has a history.

The case has several suspects, including Emma's childhood friend Eric, so Matthias gets involved unofficially. It doesn't go as expected, and conflicts occur.

Hell Hath No Fury is fast paced and full of action. We learn more about Emma's past as her relationship with Matthias deepens, although the backdrop of both a murder case and her sister's issues make things complex. The ending is a shocker ...

HELL HATH NO FURY Annette Dashofy

My head is spinning from all the twists and turns, as Emma and Matthias try to save her sister Nell from herself. They are also trying to solve the murder of a land developer, for which her friend Eric has been arrested. The list of suspects grows, hard to sort through so much distrust, anger, greed, and addiction . . . even more difficult when old grudges make it hard for law enforcement to work together.
Solutions found, lessons learned, heartbreak, and hope. This will be a hard book to follow, but I do hope for more.

Coming in August. There’s time to read others in the series if you want.
