3.5 stars. But I really liked this. Micro history and hermeneutic methods in history research usually go over well with me, I think there's a lot of important insight to be gained there. Complementing the big picture with the small and all that. I liked the idea of this book: tracking a few different individual stories in and around Linköping in the early 1600s with court records as the main source, and then explain the surrounding historical context as it comes up and give potential versions of these people's motivations, thoughts and relations. The author set out to try and understand the people of that time period and to test whether they really were as different from the people of more modern eras, and I think she does that pretty well, the reasoning is really sound and her sources extensive, at least as extensive as can be considering the lack of material that remains. Also it was accessible without being too light, and really well written so all in all a very good time. I want to check out her dissertations now.
