Apocalypse #2

Alien Instinct: A Post-Apocalyptic Romance

Rate this book
In a world where trust can be deadly, they’ll cross enemy lines to find love

Months after aliens from planet Progg-Res invade Earth, Chloe Thorne has yet to encounter another human being. Haunted by loss, but driven by grit, she wanders city to city in search of survivors.

One night, she camps in a rundown trailer in a remote area. Upon awakening, she finds herself face-to-face with an armed alien. She expects to be vaporized, but he offers her a help him find his brother, and he’ll grant her freedom. She would rather die than assist one of the murderous invaders, but she’s counting on having a chance to escape.

Rok is a disgraced Progg soldier, alone and stranded on an unfamiliar world after a virulent plague wipes out his unit. When he finds Chloe, duty demands that he eliminate her, but something about her causes him to hesitate. Breaking all the rules, he coerces her assistance to locate his estranged brother, an important officer who may know what happened to the Progg forces.

From an uneasy alliance fraught with distrust, anger, and fear, each comes to see the other in an unexpected light. Chloe, fierce and stubborn, realizes the Progg soldier is nothing like the monsters who massacred her people, and for Rok, the very human Chloe awakens some very alien instincts.

On an Earth now divided by violence and vengeance, they’ll have to decide if they’re willing to risk a relationship or allow love to become the casualty in the fight for survival.

His alien race invaded and decimated her world, now they must find a way to survive in the post-apocalypse after. Cara Bristol’s writing is a favorite of mine and I knew she had talent, but she stretched it beyond sci-fi into a survival ‘enemies to lovers’ adventure romance that I found well-nigh unputdownable.

IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE?

The story is unique, and it is refreshing to read a book that is not copycatted like so many others on the market. The story takes place in a small town in America, Missouri, but the entire Earth has been affected. An alien species, Progg, has invaded and annihilated most humans and animals by vaporizing them. There were warnings, and only a small handful of human survivors remained. Then what happens when the aliens become ill? How will their DNA makeup handle a human illness?

The story will bring a lone human survivor, Chloe Thorne, traveling and finding three humans, Caleb, Zack, and Sandy, in St. Louis, Missouri. They invite her to join them in the home they have procured since the demise of a huge portion of the human race. But something is just off with them, and has Chloe concerned, deciding she will be moving on the following day, heading to Big Creek. Her instincts aren’t wrong, and she barely escapes with her life.

Progg soldier, Rok, is the only one left of his unit after the illness strikes, and believes himself a disgrace. He decides to head out and try and find his brother, Grav. What a surprise to find a human instead—one whose name is Chloe. Will Rok and Chloe team up, put their differences aside, and work together as they head to Big Creek and then on toward Springfield.

“Alien, human didn’t define people. Character did. Rok, a Progg, was a good person. Zack, Caleb, and Sandy weren’t. She’d almost died! No one was guaranteed a tomorrow, so she would make the most of today and what she did have—the love of a kind, sexy alien man.”

The story will detail the daily lives of Rok and Chloe as they learn to navigate the world of Earth. She teaches him to ride a bike, and they trek their way toward Springfield. Will they find Grav and Laurel? What about more humans—or even more Progg? The story revolves around survival, acceptance, and moving forward. It does make you think about life and what if? There is good and bad within life, and in these two stories, we experience that with both Progg and Humans.

“Every decision came with some degree of risk, and only time would reveal how much of a risk they’d taken. But gut instinct told her they’d made the right decision.”

Alien Instinct is the second book in the post apocalyptic romance series by Cara Bristol, when the book begins Chloe has been riding her bike for days hoping to find other humans when she runs up on Nick Cameron and Sandra in a parking lot. She’s so excited she almost thinks they’re a mirage but they’re real and soon invite her to stay with them at the mansion they picked to be their new home. it isn’t long before Chloe finds her new friends strange to say the least they lie about things and even have matching scars on their arm and soon she’s flying solo again after almost being killed thanks to her new friends just trying to make her way to her mom‘s friends hometown just for a lack of traveling aimlessly on her way there trying to steer clear of the aliens that wiped out the humans and humans who are in cahoots with the aliens. In Kentucky Prog alien Rock and his Captain Zennit are ill with the sickness that wiped out most of the Prague on earth and this is how Rock find himself traveling alone it’s been months since he’s had communication with other units and so he leaves in hopes of finding his brother Rog. after a weary day of traveling he finds a trailer home and decides to rest there not knowing due to the darkness he lies in the same bed as a human named Chloe. This is how the adventure and the romance of Chloe and Rock begin. I think Cara Bristol is a very talented author she really made it so believable the anger and then eventual affection Chloe experienced for Rock, an alien who represents the people that took everything she knew and loved away from her but soon through their love they will find Hope for an uncertain future and I cannot wait for book 3. I really love this author‘s books she tells really good swoony romance stories with very believable plots. She also doesn’t mention body parts 1 million times throughout the story she doesn’t make her characters think about how sexy the other is while in life or death situation I just love her book so much you really need to read the first book with Lillian and rock to appreciate this one and get the full story but it is so so worth it.

This page-turner provides food for thought, amidst the danger and romance. The Progg are an alien race that have eliminated most humans on Earth in a much too easy, cowardly way; they vaporized people in whole cities from space. Chloe has lost everyone she loved, and she is on her own looking for others. I find it brave of her to join up with other people, when it's hard to know if they are helping the Progg or if they are on the up and up. The circumstances under which she meets up with Rok are quite funny. He is a Progg who has lost his whole unit to illness. He never had the stomach for killing innocents so he cannot kill her. Instead they work together to find his brother, Grav, along with a cute dog named Kevin.
The author goes into some interesting detail about what society needs to be rebuilt. It's true that we take a lot for granted and they have a lot to do. I wonder if most people would tolerate these two gentle Progg who are helping the humans. This is an entertaining and well written story with some very interesting characters.

Starting Over . . .

Continuing with the story of an alien invasion launched by planet Progg-Res to destroy all life on Earth, we find their cruel and senseless intentions thwarted by the common cold and those who haven't yet succumbed scramble to leave Earth immediately (carrying the deadly "cold" with them). One of the Earth survivors, Chloe Thorne, is looking for survivors without much success. A few of the aliens have also been inadvertently left behind on Earth, not quite sure what has happened, as most of their people have quickly evacuated Earth to escape the deadly disease. Unfortunately, Chloe is discovered by one of the remaining aliens, and instead of killing her, he enlists her help to find his brother. Gradually their mistrust and hate turns into something else as they get to know each other. As difficult as it may be to learn to trust an alien, Chloe's life is further complicated by human survivors who have no problem betraying other humans for their own gain. Will Rok keep Chloe safe as the two of them try to navigate the dangerous world they are now facing, and is safety even possible anymore? What kind of future is left for them?

"What would it be like to be appreciated simply because you existed?"

Chloe has faced the reality of Aliens eliminating most of the Earth's population, and now, miraculously, she has found three other survivors. Life may still be far from perfect, but she's no longer alone, and she's among humans again! That's the hope, right?

Rok is an alien, a Progg who was raised to be the child his military parents could be proud of, but joining the second wave of the Earth campaign left him dissatisfied, and now, as he faces the reality of this conflict, and how it is playing out, he is realizing he spent so much time trying to be the person others wanted him to be he never discovered who he was at heart.

This kindle unlimited book is the second in the series, but stands solidly on its own. It focuses not just on a tale of survival and figuring out who to trust when everything is turned upside down, but recognizing how much of our current lives are dependent on consumables and items that simply aren't designed to last decades. In a world without power, the Internet or cellphone service paper maps become valuable once more.

Alien Instinct is the second book of the author’s apocalypse series and in this newest story we follow the adventure of MFC
Chloe Thorne one of the lone survivors of the alien Prog attack of Earth that had left little of its populace alive.
But for the aliens the tables soon turned when an unknown Earth virus began decimating their own ranks, and which they had also brought back to their home planet.
MMC Rok is one of many Prog soldiers now stranded on Earth after his military abandons their plans for Earth and leave.
When Rok and Chloe’s paths cross it could have ended badly for one of them but instead they form an alliance.
I enjoyed this newest entry in the story as the two enemies learn things about each other that soon leads them into crossing lines they didn’t anticipate.
Nicely written with well crafted characters this was an entertaining Sci-Fi Romance, and the last in the series that wraps up things with surprises, and an HEA.

Chloe has been traveling trying to find other survivors when she runs into another couple who offer her a safe place to stay. Chloe finds her new friends strange. She finds out they are colluding with the Progg. Escaping again after almost being killed after their betrayal.
She's trying to find her way to her mom‘s old friends hometown, to a secluded location for lack of any where safe.
Prog alien Rok is alone after a plague that wiped out most of the Progg on Earth and in their ships. Rok's traveling alone, it’s been months since he’s had communication with other Progg units. He's in hopes of finding his brother Grav. After a weary day of traveling he finds a trailer home and decides to rest there.
Awakening, he lies in the same bed as a human named Chloe. This is how the adventure between Chloe and Rok begins. Cara Bristol made it believable with the anger and eventual attraction Chloe experienced with Rok, an alien who helped destroy everything she knew and loved. Hope becomes joy, for an uncertain future with a small group of survivors.

Looking Beyond The Outside
After the invasion there is not much left in the form of Earth life. A human can fail to see another person for weeks or months. No pets, little wildlife, only a lot of vermin. Some in human form, the colluders. But the same goes even worse for the Prog, after a virus wiped most of them away. Fate brought human Chloe and Prog Rok together and they gave themselves time and opportunity to get to know the person beneath the skin. They learned to trust and appreciate each other, discovered fun and laughter. As with the first book in this duet, Rok, Grav’s brother, is not completely indoctrinated and finds some earth customs and morals much to his liking. This process is beautifully portrayed, with surrounding problems like prejudice, mistrust, inflexibility and pedantry to overcome. Humanity in its best and its worst form. Highly recommended!

Well written , full of drama, intrigue, aliens, war, death, adventure, anger, hate, suspense, distrust, fear, danger, pain, love and survival. Chloe is a human living on Earth when the Proggs invade and commit mass murder of the human race. Chloe somehow survives and tries to find other who have survived. So she starts out on her bike heading to her mom's friends hoping to find her mom and others. They offer her to stay yet something is just off about them and she moves on. Rok is one of the Proggs soldiers but some of them are dying due to some kind of virus. Rok is trying to find his brother , Graw, but needs the help of a human. He finds Chloe and uses his influence to get her to help him. As they help each other they get closer and closer and have lots of emotions between them. Chloe and Rok find that 2 different groups of people and aliens can be happy together. Would recommend to others.

I received a copy from Booksprout and I'm willingly leaving a review. Worth 3.5 stars, rounded up.
Rok and Chloe started with animosity, then understanding, respect, and lust. I didn't see the love but the respect and friendship is allover, and adding Kevin in the mix was a nice touch. When other planets knew Progg was untouchable, and then learned they were decimated, I'm wondering what they thought. Retribution probably. The way Rok described the craft room is probably the same way my children and husband describe mine in their mind. LMAO. I liked how Grav and Laurel organized the city, and helping the people. The haters were not a surprise but the alien was. Here too - like in book #1 - I'm not too sure which decision I would have made if I had faced them myself, especially the offer of help from strangers. Well-written, slow-paced at first, but still full of action. No triggers.

I really enjoyed Rok's emotional journey through this book. Even before he meets Chloe he is definitely thinking about what it actually means to be Progg. Chloe changes in how she thinks about Rok specifically, but she's pretty stable through the book which made for a nice backdrop to Rok and his self-discovery arc.

I am glad this is a two book series. It's not necessary to read book 1. It has good world-building and an HEA (or two), but the story felt nicely created and wrapped up. Though I cannot help wondering about the most random part of Rok's storyline.

If you read Survival Instinct by Cara Bristol, chances are excellent you were anxiously waiting for the sequel, like me. Another excellent book from Sci-fi author Cara Bristol follows in Alien Instinct. This duo is a departure from her usual work. Still, it features aliens, suspense, and danger, set on a post-apocalyptic Earth following an alien invasion by the Progg, who have obliterated the human race and nearly all the animals, birds, and insects. This story tracks a young woman, Chloe, who has watched everyone she knew being killed. Almost crushed by the devastation, she decides to look for survivors. Human survivors. But when she finds Rok, still sick from the illness that seemingly has wiped out the Progg race, Chloe despises him for what his people have done to hers. He needs her help to search for his brother and takes her captive. In working together, Chloe learns that Rok is nothing like the invaders who came to destroy her world, but can they find love and acceptance in the process?

Rok and Chloe have had to adapt to the new Earth, and the author has provided us with an excellent glimpse into what a post-apocalyptic Earth might be like. I loved it and would like to see the story continued.

The characters are so likable, and it was hard to put the book down. I loved it!

This is another fab addition to the series and I love how Chloe and Rock came together. Both are searching in the now fairly barren Earth and end up waking up beside each other in bed. Ha! She knew the camper was empty but he entered during the night, was super weary, and just crashed, not realizing he wasn't alone. He needs help to find his brother and Chloe finds herself agreeing. Thus starts their adventure that gives them the time to learn each other. What started off with animosity slowly evolves into understanding, respect, attraction and love. Of course, nothing is simple and I was there for the reading ride ;D Expect to get caught up in the action, drama, danger, prejudice and hot romance as these two work their way to an HEA. Good fun!

Alient Instinct by Cara Bristol is book 2, the final book in this series. I want more! Starting in St Louis, Chloe, a female dog groomer, finds herself face to face with Rok, a non-typical Progg soldier. They decide to team up to find his brother and other human survivors, adding a dog along the way. When they finally reach Springfield, they discover Grav, Rok's brother and his pregnant human female, the stars from Book 1. Over time others arrive and they begin the process of reinventing the world. The Alien Federation offers help to rebuild although there are some who are not thrilled with them. I'd love to read more.

Just as interesting as book 1 (Survival Instinct). Trust, hope, love: all of these were almost destroyed when the Progg came to Earth. But humanity has a way of surviving, and even an alien invasion can't keep down those who see the better side of the worst. Chloe and Rok travel a harsh road and along the way they come to an understanding and create a relationship that stands outside of the norm. Finding solace in each other, their discovery of family, found and by blood, shows that perseverance is the strength for which we all need to aspire.

Book 2 of the Apocalypse series. For maximum enjoyment read the books in series order.

'In a world where trust can be deadly, they’ll have to cross enemy lines to find love.'

The characters carried the storyline and they were very compelling and complex and complicated. Plot was intriguing and exciting and well paced. World building continues to excel and impress. All in all a great addition to the series. Enjoyed immensely and highly recommend.

The sequel to Survival Instinct has Grav's brother Rok's story. The Progg unit he belongs to have all died of the plague as he's now on a mission to find his brother.
Chloe is the sole survivor of her family and is on the move across cities looking for human survivors. When the two of them accidentally end up in bed together, it's difficult to see who is more worried and confused.
A very sweet story.

Resilience.

This was a great follow up to book 1. Alien invasion sort of gone wrong opened the door to many possibilities. I liked watching Rok and Chloe figure out how to navigate the present situation together. Overall this felt like a cautionary tale of what can happen to society when trust and support of community and each other are the keys to survival.

The first book in this series was good but this one is so much better. There is a full and interesting back story for both characters. I loved the interactions between Rok and Chloe. There are plenty of different elements to hold the reader's interest. This story is very well written and described. I received an advanced reader copy of this book and am leaving an honest review. “Alien Instinct” by Cara Bristol

-A gripping post-apocalyptic alien romance filled with survival, distrust, and unexpected connection. I received a free copy and am voluntarily sharing my honest thoughts.

Chloe and Rok’s journey from enemies to allies is emotional, tense, and surprisingly heartwarming. Unique worldbuilding, strong characters, and a hopeful message make this hard to put down.

If another Progg had to survive the plague, I’m glad it was Grav’s brother Rok. He and Chloe find each other by accident and work together to find Grav without knowing what will happen. Chloe showed her strength (or her will to live), and I loved all the little nuances of this story (without giving it away), and I hope that the ending leads to more books in the series.

Rok is such a sweetheart, despite being a top of his class military invader. The connection he has with Chloe has a gentler edge but no less chemistry and depth than a fated mate bond. I love how they grow together and choose each other in their new life. The supporting characters add great energy to the adventure.

The earth is now under attack from the Progg Res, they simply destroyed the earth, where they decimated certain areas but not in all areas. Chloe is trying to find humans, runs into some and they're going to give to the Progg. Chloe learns what they're doing and leaves. Coming across Rok who is Progg. He doesn't want to kill anyone so they make there way to finding Roks brother.

After Earth has been invaded by the Progg there are very few humans left. Chloe is one of them. She travels alone and keeps to herself. That is until one morning waking up in bed next to one of the Progg. He is the last of his group as illness has killed all the others. He is trying to find his brother and Chloe reluctantly agrees to help him. Good story.

Loved this Duology

This was a great story. I wish that there was a follow-up regarding the recovery of humanity.
I appreciate that this book didn't have pages and pages of bedroom scenes. The adventure was great. This story really made me think about how much we depend on the progress of medicine, manufacturing, and technology we've had in the past 300 years.

A low burn, high suspense read. You will get to see both the good and the bad side of the human race. The Progg are different in some ways but there are similarities as well. This is a simple story of finding a better way when all seems lost.
