Fantastic book. If you like ghosts, demons, and Native American folklore, this book is for you. I'll be reading the second book in series, so my review will be done in a few days...

t doesn't happen very often to me these days, but this was a read in one sitting book. I was engrossed from start to finish. Unique storyline, well developed awesome characters, and an author who knows how to play with pace and uses it well. July is an awesome female lead, a strong female role with realistic flaws and fears. Her character goes from strength to strength as the story progresses. Renn is a perfect slow burn book boyfriend type of guy that you want to see get with the girl, but after saying that this is not a romance story. The story is much stronger than that, in fact romance is right on the back burner in this installment. Instead you get ghosts, good helpful spirits like Ernie and the scary as hell versions too. Further down the line you get a great weaving of Native American folk lore and a handful of demons thrown in for an action packed finale. I think anyone who is a fan of YA, NA or adult fantasy would love this. Megan Applegate definitely has me hooked - the ending/ link to next book was perfect.

I'm a huge fan of Buffy the Vampire fan, so when I saw in the description that this book would be along the same lines I was very excited! I read the book very quickly because it was so interesting. I think the author did an amazing job developing all of the characters and they seemed very realistic to me. The scenery is also extremely vivid and had me feeling like I was right there in the middle of the action. July was my favorite character. I found her to be brave and unafraid. She won't stop at anything to save her friends and family from this paranormal. Megan Applegate was a new author for me and I'm glad that I decided to check out her work. This first book in the series was very impressive and I cannot wait for the series to continue. I am most definitely a fan.

I was totally ready to give up on this book in the beginning. I didn't particularly like the characters (rather shallow heroine & a stereotypical mysterious, magical Native American guy) but I stuck with it and in the end I think the plot involving evil Native American spirits and spirit guides made up for all its weaknesses. The heroine started getting on her head on straight by the end.

I think this writer has a lot of potential but until the books are edited again they will not be appealing to mainstream readers. If this is something you do for a living. you really need to proofread your work over and over or have friends help. I don't complain unless there are a lot of errors. There were errors in verb tenses, missing words, extra words and entire paragraphs that didn't make sense.
Usually I don't finish a book with this many errors, however the writer definitely has an interesting style of writing. There was appealing humor and plenty of action. The heroine of the story starts out very insipid but show growth. Nana seems to be a person worth knowing.
Other problems with the storyline - it starts out evoking a small one streetlight town which grows as the story progresses. Having worked several small town libraries I definitely envy their book collection. Also a local community college is mentioned - but only truckers ever go to the diner. Then there are two distinct story lines that never connect 1) the dumpster murders and 2) the story of a girl who sees and hears ghosts.
Included in this book was an excerpt of Fall into Fire, book 2. Within the first pages more errors. Edit, edit, edit!
Despite the obvious problems, the author has a good sense of how to connect with the reader. Her sense of style and humor were very enjoyable.

Just when it got good, the book ended. My favorite kind of book too: a quick read that hooked me and kept me involved until the end. I would buy other books by this author, but this must be her first, (which is always a good sign,) because I don't see any other books by her in the store. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

I'm not in the target group for this book. It was free and had good ratings. It was an quick and easy read, but pretty bland as many YA tends to be. Full of clichés. I didn't get how the murders along 80 fitted into the story.
