Goldie Flynn—witch, librarian, and professional sparkle enthusiast—has enough on her plate between her coven, her on-again-off-again boyfriend, festival planning, and life in a sentient apartment building. But when a powerful bureaucrat turns up dead at the Green Holdings, Goldie is dragged into a mystery rooted in very old magic.
Splice, the assistant to an ancient god, is unraveling. The Thornfather has been awake for too long, and the land is stirring in dangerous ways. Worse, a copper-haired witch keeps getting under his bark and into his thoughts. She shouldn’t matter. But she does.
When their paths collide, Goldie and Splice are pulled together by circumstance… and something far more dangerous. What begins as reluctant cooperation twists into fascination, obsession, and a slow-burn spark neither of them is equipped to handle.
Welcome back to Greymarket Towers, where the apartments have opinions, the cats judge your life choices, and love is just another kind of magic.
Perfect for fans of cozy magical mysteries, lush urban fantasy, slow-burn monster romance, and cryptids with feelings.
Another fun turn around Bellwether and Greymarket Towers that more people definitely need to be reading. Seriously, where is everybody? These books are well-written, weird, and spicy fun. I have read some really trendy, very bad books. These are so good! Where's a BookTok influencer when you need one? *shakes fist curmudgeonly*
This book does have a bit of a different bent to it than Claimed by the Mothman, which puts it in second place in the series for me merely down to personal preference (and I'm not sure any couple will unseat Nell and Sig as my best beloveds, let's be real). This book introduces a murder mystery element to the proceedings, as well as a lot of civic and magical bureaucracy, which are not necessarily things I seek out, but I couldn't NOT follow the Goldie as she continues to be a menace.
The writing continues to keep me rooted (har) in the awesome weirdness of the Greymarket Towers building, and Goldie's story gives us more to see of the city of Bellwether beyond that. The bureaucratic hijinks in Bellwether City Hall felt reminiscent of British humor (which I love). But even though this book was packed with a lot of stuff going on, the weirdness and wonder of the residents of Greymarket remain at the core and are still my absolute favorite parts.
In Goldie's story, we get to know the Thornfather in all his leafy glory, fall in love with Splice who manages to be sexy while having an internal existential crisis, and cackle at Maeve and Oberon saying what we all kinda figured cats have been thinking all along. Overall, this is easily another favorite for me that I will likely reread whenever I'm craving something green and exciting during the snow-crusted, quiet days of winter. This author is 2 for 2 with me, which means whatever comes next is going to be an instant pre-order. Please keep releasing your weird love stories into the world. They feed my strange little soul. ❤️
I absolutely adore this book! Bound by the Plant God tells the story of Goldie Flynn, BFF-extraordinaire to Nell Townsend, the FMC from Claimed by the Mothman, the first book by @kabowerwriter. If you haven't read it yet, this is your sign to get on it immediately. Both Mothman and Plant God get into your brain and make you ponder things from so many different directions, like spicy brain candy.
The Greymarket Towers world is whimsical and wonderful, a sort of paranormal Stars Hollow where fantastical magic blends seamlessly into regular life. Magical wards are commonplace, but so are municipal ordinances.
I defy you not to fall in love with the MMC, Splice aka The Assistant. He is strong, handsome and dedicated. He is also prone to anxiety, inexperienced and afraid of cats. And lets just say that he has vines, and he knows how to use them. 🔥🌶😉
I received an ARC and am leaving this review voluntarily I totally devoured Book 1- Claimed by the Mothman, so maybe my expectations were too high. This just dragged. I had a hard time staying interested in the main character Goldie, (who I thought was annoying in Mothman), and too much weird murder mystery/small town council government?! The elements that made Mothman so charming, were definitely missing from this book. Greymarket Towers is a big background character. Goldie is still annoying and never shows up to her job. I had no interest in any of these characters, other than Nell and Sig. The backstory/solved mystery was cheesy and uninteresting. Too bad since book 1 was so delightful, and I was looking forward to this!
K.A. has done it again with Bound By The Plant God! This is the second in her Greymarket Towers series, but it quickly took the #1 spot in my heart. Who doesn’t love two sassy cat familiars, a meddling sentient apartment building with jokes, and a literal god made out of plants!?
Marigold, or Goldie to pretty much everyone, is a sparkly (no, really… she loves to make herself sparkle) witch living in Greymarket Towers with her two cat familiars. She spends her days working in the library with her best friend, Nell, who we met in Claimed By The Mothman. Goldie seemingly has everything, but she isn’t as happy and carefree as she acts. When given a new position within the coven, she quickly gets to work on making it the best festival she can. However, she quickly runs into several roadblocks, and finally stumbles upon a terrible mystery in the Grove. The land is hurting and acting out (as sentient land does) from pain. Goldie must join the Assistant to the Thornfather to unravel this mystery before it’s too late for her small town.
Overall, I very much enjoyed the mystery aspect of this book. I felt like it added a nice progression to the storyline & gave an organic opportunity to see the characters grow. It was refreshing to see an older, more established FMC in a story like this. I felt like I could truly identify with her and the stage of life she was in. Paranormal Romance is a somewhat tricky genre to tackle and maintain a serious plot, but K.A. did a fantastic job with it! The spice WAS spicing in this one, and I even blushed at a few different scenes - even as a seasoned reader. I feel like the pacing was one of the only things that lowered my rating. In some spots it seemed to drag a little too much and became a little too repetitive. In other scenes, it was over before I could even fully comprehend what was happening. That being said, it’s still a very strong 4-Star read for me! I’m excited to see where Book 3 takes us.
I received an ARC of this book for free, and I’m leaving this review voluntarily.
I loved this book. From the start, it just had me and dropped me back into this charming world and somehow made it all feel effortless. Goldie Flynn is such a fun character. Shes a witch, librarian, sparkle enthusiast but there’s so much more going on underneath. Between her coven, her messy relationship situation, festival planning, and living in a sentient apartment building, she’s constantly juggling everything… and smiling through it.
But what really got me was how much the story focuses on Goldie wanting to be seen for who she actually is, not just the bright, glittery version she shows everyone else. That hit harder than I expected, and watching her finally get her HEA felt so deserved.
And Splice. Honestly, no notes. He was perfect. Every chapter with him had me smiling. Watching him slowly unravel as the Thornfather stays awake too long, and Goldie starts creeping into his thoughts just made it a great slow burn. Their connection builds quietly, then deeply, and it felt natural the whole way through. The spice was really well balanced too and never took over the story. But man was it hot when it happened!
The mystery element kept things moving, and that plot twist? Completely blindsided me. I did not see it coming at all. I also loved getting to see Sig and Nel again, those moments felt like a little gift and I couldn't get enough.
I could honestly talk about this book for way longer, but I’ll stop here and just say this: if you like witchy stories, ancient gods, emotional depth, and a romance that sneaks up on you and refuses to let go, you should absolutely read this one yourself 🌱📖
It felt a little slow to start (which may have just been me as I had other stuff going on) but sticking with it was 100% worth it. The characters were compelling and interesting, the mystery was well-structured and logical while being ambiguous enough to be interesting, and the romance was good. Goldie's exploration of public face versus private self and having that private self loved was extremely satisfying, but I also loved Splice's exploration of what it was to become an individual.
There is: Murder Mystery 💀 Spice 🌶 Supernatural 😈 Immersive World Building 🌍
If you haven't read this yet, you need to get this now! Everything is so well structured from the world building to the murder mystery. It will have you wrapped up into the story within a minute into reading it. There was one 🌶 scene that had me reading it with my mouth wide open lol 😆
I actually only give this one a 3.75. I like it less than the first, but it was still good! Once again, Sig is precious, the way he cares for Goldie as Nell's friend. Splice learning how to be himself as a separate being from his God showed hella growth (hehe plant jokes). Definitely saw the bad guys coming a mile away but that's okay. This was a good, cozy book... and still decently written despite being heavy on the smut.
