They never proved he killed his wife. Half the station still believes he did.

Twelve years ago, DI Ryan Hale's wife Jaime vanished without a trace. He was never charged, but the suspicion followed him all the way to London, where a brutal kidnapping left him scarred, inside and out.

Now he's back in Chesterfield, leading a new team and searching for answers about Jaime that no one else could find.

But before his feet are under the desk a pair of German backpackers find a gruesome pagan ritual at the Nine Ladies Stone Circle. Someone’s been taking trophies and arranging them as offerings to ancient gods.

As the body count rises and ritual symbols point to Derbyshire's pagan fringe, Ryan must earn the trust of a team who barely know him while half the station whispers "murderer" behind his back.

Then evidence from Jaime's case surfaces. Not by accident. Because the person who took her didn’t just want her gone. They wanted Ryan to suffer. And they're not finished.

Perfect for fans of JD Kirk, Rachel McLean and Elly Griffiths, Bury the Truth launches a gripping new crime thriller series featuring a detective who must solve the case that could destroy him, or finally set him free.

I received Bury The Truth as an ARC and was fully invested right from the very beginning. It is the first in the series featuring DI Ryan Hale and what a cracking start it is!
I love a good detective story and this one has all the great elements to it - detective haunted by his past returning home, a supportive team consisting of great bunch of characters, some old foes, and then the case, the case that's shocking and complex and fully absorbing. Not forgetting the dark past that Hale is still tormented by. Past that might well be catching up with him. And obviously mustn't forget Winston the dog who seems to steal every scene he appears in.
I loved it from the very first page and just flew through the whole book. R.K. Lynott writes with ease and competence, the story dark and gritty and yet Lynott manages to add the touch of humour in the form of banter between the team, her fully fledged cast is an interesting mix of characters, I was fully engaged and cannot wait to read book two in the series.

Thank you to the author and BookFunnel for selecting me to receive and ARC of this in exchange for a review.

DI Hale returns to Chesterfield after a long time working at the Met. His past still haunts him, with half of the station thinking he was involved in the mysterious disappearance of his wife and the trauma of his last case with the Met still fresh.

Day one on the job and a case tied up with a book club and Wiccan rituals set Hale and team on a curious path.

I really enjoyed this murder mystery with a healthy mix of personal trauma and crime scene investigator. I can't wait to see how the series develops as we learn more about DI Hale, his history and his wife's disappearance.

We were so excited when the author reached out to us personally and offered an ARC of her debut novel Bury the Truth in exchange for an honest review. As soon as we read the blurb, we knew this was exactly the kind of crime thriller we love — atmospheric, character-driven, and brimming with secrets. And honestly? It delivered on every count.

The pacing was fast, the chapters were short, and every single one ended in a way that made it impossible not to read “just one more.”

The story follows DI Ryan Hale, who returns to his hometown after twelve long years away, still living under the shadow of his wife’s mysterious disappearance. He barely has time to settle before he’s thrown straight into a grisly new murder case, working alongside his new team: Fiona, Cal, Sheri, and Digit. Each character has their own distinct personality and quirks, and their dynamic together really lifts the story.

For a debut, this book absolutely hits the mark. It drops intriguing hints about backstories yet to surface — and I’m very curious about what went down between Ryan and Fiona all those years ago. The plot kept me guessing, and I definitely didn’t see the twist coming. Instead of wrapping up neatly, the ending sets things up perfectly for book two, and now I’m fully invested in this series.

I didn’t think I had room for another detective series on our TBR… but clearly we were wrong! A solid 3.5 stars, and our only wish is that it was a little bit longer.

If you’re after a gripping new crime series with heart, pace, and plenty of mystery, this is one to watch. 📚✨

Twelve years after his wife Jaime vanished, DI Ryan Hale returns to Chesterfield still shadowed by the unproven suspicion that he killed her. Scarred from a recent London kidnapping case and distrusted by his new team, Ryan is immediately thrown into a chilling investigation when two German backpackers discover a pagan ritual site marked with trophies from multiple victims. As the killings escalate and point toward the region’s occult group, new evidence from Jaime’s disappearance emerges.

It started out slowly for me but I ended up truly enjoying this book. The writing style is impressive and the attention to detail is remarkable. You can tell the author put a great deal of research into it. The forensic elements and police procedures are clearly explained without ever becoming overwhelming. It taught me new things along the way.

DI Ryan, despite all his past baggage, is instantly likeable. He’s driven, passionate and determined to prove himself. The supporting cast is great too, each one plays an important role on the team. And I think I may have found my favourite side character ever. DI Digit!

Although it starts off slowly, the pacing is well maintained throughout. The finale doesn’t feel rushed and the buildup towards the next book in the series is well written.
The plot and the twist, though not particularly shocking, are surprisingly close to reality. I’ve watched a lot of true-crime documentaries and situations like that can definitely happen in real life.

After finishing this book, I am curious about DI Ryan’s past - his wife, his history and the other characters connected to him. This is my first time reading a detective crime series and I’m already fully invested. I’ll definitely continue following DI Ryan’s story.

If you love police procedurals and forensic investigations. If you’re new to the thriller genre and want something fun and easy to dive into. Or if you’re just craving a quick palate cleanser, this book is perfect for you!

I was delighted to receive an ARC of this book and even more pleased when, after a few chapters, it was right up my street!!
A pair of German backpackers stumble across a gruesome discovery at an ancient Stone Circle in Derbyshire and newly returned DI Ryan Hale is thrown in at the deep end on his first day back. Hale had left for the Met twelve years ago after being cleared of any involvement over the disappearance of his wife and although he's largely welcomed back, there are a couple of individuals that make it clear about how they feel!
So what we effectively have is the main story, with Hale's past in the background with occasional mentions especially regarding a local newspaper reporter. While the storyline in the first book of a series is vital, I think the characters are even more important as they will be the ongoing presence going forward and thankfully, there's a great set within Hale's small team from the Instagram obsessed Cal to (my favourite) Digit who is a cross of the computer genius of Ho (Slow Horses) and intelligence of Sheldon (Big Bang Theory) and i hope he gets more page time going forward.
There's also a welcome streak of humour among the often graphic descriptions and it rattles along at a brisk pace and it certainly didnt pan out the way I'd expected.
All told, a really promising start and I'll look forward to seeing how things progress with the characters.

This new crime series launches triumphantly with the introduction of DI Ryan Hale.
Returning to his old station 12 years after his wife's unsolved disappearance, Hale is immediately immersed in a gruesome murder investigation alongside his new team. The real joy of this book lies in the team dynamic and the brilliant, sharp banter between the unit members provides welcome relief during the dark case.
As the death count rises, the pace becomes relentless.
Hale is a superb, flawed protagonist, determined not to repeat past mistakes. The parallel mystery of his missing wife adds intriguing emotional depth and the ending is tied up as neatly as a box of gourmet sausage rolls wrapped in a bow.
An outstanding start that sets the stage for a compelling new saga. I can't wait for the sequel!
I received an advance copy of this book and this is my own opinion.

DI Ryan Hale moves from The Met to return to Chesterfield after a break away following the disappearance of his wife. Still unexplained, some of his colleagues thought he'd k*lled her but there was no evidence of that. Still haunting him, he see's his wife's face in many others, quick glance here and there but knows its in his imagination.

A m*urder spree has taken his attention, seemingly unlinked people going missing and m*rdered, eyes gouged out, coins in the place of eyes, pentagrams.. wiccan rituals, candles, full of mystery and intrigue.

I liked how quick these chapters were, making you want to read another straight away. We get to know Ryan along the book but he has an injured arm but we only get snippets to what happened to him.

There is obviously history there and between Fiona, his colleague. Hopefully we find out both in future books. A great first introduction to the series and DI Ryan Hale, look forward to more!

I received this book as an ARC, and by chapter three I was completely hooked. The story opens with DI Hale returning to Chesterfield—a place he fled 12 years earlier after being accused of murdering his wife. Now he must rebuild trust with a new team while enduring the lingering hostility of those still convinced of his guilt.

On his very first day back, he’s thrown into a strange, unsettling case where the crime scene has been staged as a ritual. A murder soon follows, tying back to that eerie setup and introducing even more compelling characters. Meanwhile, Emily—recently kidnapped—is fighting to escape. But will she?

The plot truly comes together in the final quarter, and just when you think you’ve figured it all out… think again. I would have loved more POV from Emily during her captivity, and the case being solved in under a week felt a bit unrealistic, but neither issue took away from my enjoyment.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end and didn’t want to put it down. I’m already excited for the second book in the series. R.K. Lynot is definitely an author to watch!

The story follows DI Ryan Hale, who is back working in Derbyshire after leaving 12 years earlier following his wife’s disappearance. On his first day back, a body is discovered by German backpackers in some kind of pagan ritual…

I really enjoyed the mystery surrounding the murder that appeared to link to other smaller crimes in the area and similar mo to other recent murders…

The chapters were short and snappy, which I liked, I felt it helped build the suspense and the twist near the end was great and I didn’t even see it coming! I thought the ending was clever- leaving us in suspense and leaving the story open to continue in the next book.

Thank you so much to the author for reaching out to me and sending me a digital arc to read. Opinions expressed here are my own.

Detective is blamed for his wife’s disappearance and murder leaves town and a decade later comes back to work with the same colleagues he didn’t trust and who didn’t trust him back then. First day on the job, doesn’t go so well, starts off with a serious crime. The suspects are pilling up, the people & information of the past keeps being brought up at the wrong time. Will the detective be able to focus to solve the current case and put his past case on hold, or will he get carried away which will cause him to miss important clues?

I loved the twists, the back & forth from his wife’s crime to the current. Just when you had the “who dun it” nope, sorry try again.

What a debut this is! Ryan is back in Chesterfield , returning from the Met in London. This is where he was originally based and where his wife disappeared many years ago. The suspicion of his involvement still permeates here. He is soon in the thick of it on his first day back with a gruesome discovery nearby. Cue a lot of satanic and wiccan and general pagan scenarios.

I loved it. I immediately took to Ryan and his sidekick Fiona. They already seem like a great duo. Some brutal deaths and a missing woman made things even more interesting and I was hooked all the way through. The reveal at the end was a surprise and the final ending had me reeling and wishing the next book was already out. I can't wait.

I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of this book in return for a review and let me tell you I do feel lucky!

The book was a real page turner. I finished it in less than a day and as well as a gripping main story there is a back mystery which I look forward to being explored in further titles.

The characters were all fantastic and I look forward to hearing more from them, although I did feel that the character of Digit was maybe a touch over exaggerated so sometimes came off more like an android than the team’s brilliant mathematician/statistician/technical mind - but every good team needs a Digit character!

In summary - I thought this was a fantastic debut to a new detective series and I’m looking forward to reading more.

I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of Bury The Truth in return for an honest review. Thankyou to RK Lynott for the opportunity. 💜

Twelve years after the disappearance of his wife, DI Ryan Hale is pulled into a chilling new case that echoes his past in unsettling ways.

Hale is a compelling lead. He is flawed, grieving, and determined, and his personal history adds real emotional weight to the investigation.

The procedural details throughout feel authentic without slowing the pace, and the tension builds steadily as the case begins to mirror Hale’s own long-buried trauma. I loved the mix of police procedural grit and psychological thriller atmosphere.

It is such a well written, fast paced read.
Every person in DI Hale’s world has their own individuality- their own voice and flaws-rather than just background filler for the plot. I look forward to these relationships develop as the DI Ryan Hale series continues.

This book is dark and full of suspense with an under current of sadness and desperation in Hales backstory- exactly what I want in a gritty, British crime thriller. The twists are clever and well-timed, and the final reveal genuinely surprised me. (Just when I thought I had it all worked out).

I will definitely be picking up the next book in the series. 👏🏼💜

A chilling tale with dry wit and stunning settings

Bury the Truth is a crime novel set in Derbyshire, England. Detective Inspector Hale returns to Derbyshire after working for the Metropolitan Police in London. On his first day back, he faces a gruesome discovery in a stone circle. Having lived in Derbyshire, I recognised the authentic dry wit of the locals, and the stunning settings. R.K. Lynott captures them so well, and with DI Hale’s mixed police squad, the investigation unearths pagan rituals, infidelity and an underground drug culture.

With his complex background, Hale’s return is not smooth sailing, and there are those who would undermine him. This is a well-written, fast-paced novel, with twists and turns to keep everyone happy. The conclusion is satisfying and opens up further developments in the next in the series. The chilling plot maintains the reader’s interest throughout. A great start to the series. Highly recommended.

I received a free ARC copy of the book, but my opinions are truly my own.

This is a fantastic debut novel! It's well written, well paced and full of interesting characters.

Ryan is an intriguing MMC, and what has happened to him recently was very fascinating. Plus the fact he's still having to deal with what's happened in the past... Phew, poor guy!

The other characters in this are awesome as well. Such a mixed bag. Especially his team..they are gold!

The writting in this flowed really well. At no point did I want to skip anything that was starting to hang up or drag on. It keep my interest and attention the whole time. At times it's funny and light, at times it's serious and dark, which makes for a great read.

I love a good plot twist that I don't see coming... and this delivered one! YESSSSS!

Looking forward to the rest of the books coming out in this series.

If like me, you love a GOOD police procedural, then add this one to your list.

I received this as an ARC.

I received a ARC free from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.
It was well written. The realistic characters pulled you in.
I gave 4 stars because of having to many unnecessary cuss words. That really spoiled it for me.
It was a great page turner. I couldn't put it down. I was glued to my seat.
I enjoyed it and would recommend to to others. You don't want to miss this one.

Bury the Truth, the first in a series, is a well written police procedural, set in the English countryside, outside of London. DI Ryan Hale returns to Chesterfield after 12 years, to take over an investigation into several crimes, including murders and the disappearance of a young woman. Hale originally left after his wife mysteriously disappeared, a case that was never solved and left a cloud of suspicion on Hale.

The pacing was fast, from beginning all the way through. While there were plenty of grisly details, there was also a lot of humorous banter between the characters and even Hale’s dog provided some levity - all in all, a fine balance of action and humanity. There were lots of characters to track and plenty of twists that kept me guessing ( I thought I had it figured out - I was wrong). I am happily anticipating the next book in the series!

Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.

OMFG!!!!
This is going to be my new favourite book series!
A superbly written and cleverly created British Police Procedural giving Ian Rankin vibes!!
With lovable (and some not so likeable) characters being developed, and the foreboding shadow of events past creating uncertainty around the present, the author manages to expertly pull together several intertwining story lines to deliver a thrilling conclusion, and place you firmly in DI Hale's corner.
I cannot wait for Book 2!!!

Received as a review copy from Booksirens, this is an honest review.

Bury the Truth was an intoxicating read, with its first chapter that's bone-chilling of how it sets up a woman named Emily and the dark, desperate situation she had fallen into. Them few chapters devoted to Emily's perspective only enhances the race against the clock DI Ryan Hale and his team face before the woman's abductor can fulfill his ultimate henious plan.

The characters we are introduced to felt so realistic: from Ryan Hale weighed down from his missing wife and his dogged search for what they hell happened and his previous job that left subtle and not subtle scars upon him. To sheri, Digit and Fiona that each brought their own colorful mannerisms to the team and unique skills and ways of seeing how the clues fit together to bring a murderer to justice and hope for a missing woman.

A great book to launch a series.

Definitely for fans of Alex Sigmore.

Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this one, I liked the setting, the characters and the storyline.
I found it to quite character driven and a very atmospheric read.
Fast paced and short chapters and so easy to do the whole one more chapter thing because of cliff hangers.
Curious about some of the characters backstories and I hope the author delves further into these in the rest of the series.

A fab debut book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this debut novel and am very pleased to find a new author, especially one who already has two more books in the series going to be published soon.
I’m finding myself invested in the main characters already. I think they’re believable and interesting.
The plot had some good twists and turns. I like to be surprised and this book worked in that area for me.
And I also like that there are some unanswered questions… I look forward to Book 2’s release…

I was kindly sent an ARC, and what a fantastic debut novel. It certainly didn’t disappoint. Sign me up for book two!

This book had a little bit of everything: humor, suspense, grief, “oh my!” moments, and even a cheeky Corgi who steals more than hearts.

The pacing was perfect, fast, engaging, and a true page-turner. By the end of Chapter Two, I was completely hooked. I loved the characters and can’t wait to learn more about them and their backstories as the series unfolds.

If you’re looking for a debut that delivers heart, intrigue, and a good twist, this one’s a must!

My Rating: 2.5 stars out of 5
For the most part, I enjoyed this story, although there were definitely moments where the characters made absolutely no sense. I mean one of the members of the police has an active social media account, which is fine, I don’t mind that on principle and it’s even encouraged because he’s “inspiring future generations.” Cute idea, sure. But then he decides it’s totally appropriate to climb a rock formation on the way to a crime scene and ask his boss to take a photo of him? I’m sorry, what? That’s not quirky; that’s just weird and unprofessional. And unfortunately, this wasn’t the only instance where someone acted, or spoke, in a way that didn’t feel natural. Every now and then I would find myself pulled out of the story, thinking, “People don’t behave like this.”

Now let's talk about DI Hale himself. And goodness, I really didn’t care for him. Here’s the thing: this is our first introduction to him, and yet we’re handed not one, but two major tragic backstories with zero real payoff. First, we’re told his wife disappeared and he was a suspect (though nothing was proven). Then we’re informed during another case he was working on he somehow wound up with extensive scarring on his face and such severe nerve damage in one of his hands that he can barely use it. Add in the fact that he has complicated history with at least one teammate and two superior officers, and suddenly he’s carrying enough emotional baggage to fill a checked-luggage carousel. But since this is the first book in a new series, we get none of the answers. Honestly, I wish book one had focused on one of these tragedies, preferably the disappearance of his wife, and then book two could’ve explored how he ended up scarred. As it is, everything feels piled on without the depth that was needed to really make the reader care.

Of course, the pacing didn’t help matters either. In fact, in my opinion, the middle section dragged far longer than it needed to. If anything, I would have preferred the murders to be spaced out more. Imagine if the trophies had been taken at different times and preserved beforehand; it would’ve added a deeper, more chilling layer to the story and kept the plot moving instead of stalling.

I also wish the author had leaned more into the pagan angle. There was so much potential there, enough to really steer the reader down a specific path, and it never fully materialized. Instead of becoming a rich, atmospheric thread, it just kind of... existed in the background.

That said, the ending, clearly designed to hook readers into the next installment, actually worked on me. Despite the issues, I enjoyed this one enough to see where the series goes from here. I just hope book two fills in the gaps book one left wide open.

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

A DI with a complicated past. A ragtag team of investigators. A vicious killer. An adorable, food-obsessed corgi.

Bury the Truth is a contemporary police procedural/crime thriller set in Chesterfield, England. It follows DI Ryan Hale's first case in Chesterfield in 12 years, as he returns from London and is thrown headfirst into a ritualistic murder case with a new team of investigators under his command.

Ryan Hale is a man with a dark past. 12 years ago, Ryan's wife mysteriously disappeared. Her case was never solved, and Ryan transferred to London soon after. Now he is back in Chesterfield, physically scarred from a brutal case that nearly left him dead and emotionally haunted by his own perceived failings. Ryan is not, however, the kind of man who gives up or gives in to the darkness inside him. And he is not alone.

Ryan's second in command is his old friend and ally Fiona Bennet, a reliable and sympathetic character who serves as a softer, gentler counterpart to Ryan's occasional dark thoughts and cynicism. DC Mathis "Digit" Asare lends some comedic relief with his extreme logical and analytical nature, and Ryan's Corgi Winston offers some moments of pure fun and cuteness, lightening the mood in the book considerably whenever he appears.

The novel balances dark and light elements very nicely. Ryan is traumatised but not completely broken. The murders, and there are several, are serious and chilling but not overly graphic or disturbing. The mystery is solid and well presented, but to me the highlight of this novel is the characters. Ryan and his team of investigators are all very different, they are interesting, slightly flawed and feel very real and human.

Bury the Truth releases today, December 9th. Pick it up if you want a police procedural/crime thriller with clear, descriptive writing, an interesting mystery and well-crafted characters.

Thank you so much to R. K. Lynott for this ARC.

I was extremely fortunate to get an advanced copy of this book from the author and I'm delighted that I did as it turned out to be a 5 star read. This is a wonderfully written, British police procedural crime thriller that ticked all the right boxes for me.
The opening immediately hooked me in with the discovery of human remains by two German backpackers on Stanton Moor in Derbyshire, meanwhile we learn that that a young woman has been abducted and held captive. Enter D I Ryan Hale, a detective with a dark past, trust issues and a missing wife .. what's not to like ?
Ryan Hale is one of those characters that you cannot fail to engage with, there is a real authenticity about him and he is incredibly likeable. I enjoyed the camaraderie and closeness of the team and their witty banter, I also loved the fact that the family lives of the police officers are skilfully woven into the story, which adds perspective.
From page one this story grabs you with a chilling case and a detective so real you forget they're fictional. The storyline moves at a cracking pace, has plenty of misdirection and the writing is of the calibre of a seasoned crime novelist.
Red herrings are an integral part of crime novels, and whilst there were plenty, they were planted quite subtly and enhanced the storytelling. The tension was just right and the build up to that final, ingenious ending, really hit the spot.
The finale is perfectly set up for the next instalment of D I Ryan Hale and his team, and I'm seriously looking forward to it. I am very happy to have discovered a new author and a new detective series to enjoy. Highly recommended !!
Thank you to RK Lynott for the advanced copy.

Just when you think you have read or have a TBR list of most of the detective crime thrillers out there, the ones worth reading anyways, along comes another that once again captures your reading focus and leaves you desperately hoping the author has plans for a lengthy series.

Having read Bury The Truth, book one in the DI Ryan series, I have another author who has captured my attention with a story that combined intrigue, credible characters, super scene setting and enough humour to avoid it becoming too brutal to read given the macabre murders.

The lead detective, Ryan, has returned to a world that he left under suspicion of a crime against his wife. He was never charged but that doesn’t stop many believing he was guilty. Only to himself does he initially admit the reasoning for his return – to establish finally what happened to Jaime – but as he gets to know his team, it becomes hard to hide his intentions from them all.

But what I found so engaging was the way the author so cleverly created a powerful story combing Ryan’s personal investigation, whilst in parallel pulling together a complex web of intrigue related to a series of murderers linked with pagan rituals. Added to this was the slow building of full formed characters in the team of detectives and how their relationships grow with the unfolding of the plot.

Gosh how I hope RK Lynott is about to press submit on book 2. It just can’t come soon enough.

Thank you so much R.K. Lynott for providing me with a free Advance Reader Copy. I’m posting this review voluntarily, and it reflects my honest opinion.

Do you love a police procedural book? I do and I really enjoyed this one. So glad this is the start of a series.

The characters are really well written. DI Ryan Hale is the male main character. His back story is really fascinating and I really want to learn more about him. We get snippets of information about him, his flaws, his motives, his tenacity, little teasers that really pull you in to his character. The supporting characters are also brilliant and completely relatable. There was a great mix of humour, and banter, that really helped lighten the dark and gripping murders going on around them. The characters felt authentic.

The story was intriguing with shocking crime scenes, where rituals, and paganism are explored.
I loved the setting in Derbyshire. I really enjoy when settings and locations almost play a character role in books. I really felt that I was there with DI Hale, and his team investigating the crimes with them.

Overall, Bury The Truth is engaging, and thoroughly enjoyable. I’m already looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I have a feeling this series is going to become my new obsession.
