Very good and comprehensive discussion on how the Orthodox person should view various aspects of bioethics through the lens of Scripture and Holy Tradition. Blending science and theology, this book discusses a variety of hot topic issues such as marriage and sexuality, abortion, stem-cell research, addictions, euthanasia, and quality of life care. It's somewhat technical at times, but the insights it gives, especially regarding life (it's beginning, meaning, and composition), the soul, and life-after-death are especially thought-provoking and helpful in defining how we should look at the world and people around us.
I think this is a gentle yet convicting read. I appreciated the stance it takes that bioethics should concern not just birth and death but all of life. I appreciated how scientifically informed it was, yet how balanced it remained in being sure we're informing science with theology and vice-versa. I especially liked the chapter on the soul. That was exceptionally different to how I was raised to think of the soul and body in my Protestant upbringing. That chapter alone was worth the time to read, yet the whole book was very thought-provoking and grace-filled.
It is definitely fully Orthodox and assumes its reader will be at least nominally aware of Orthodoxy, but I think most Christians would benefit from reading this. It gives clear, biblical guidelines on how we should arrange our lives and view life amidst all the concerns and technologies of the day. It is slightly dated (2005). It would be great to see a revised version that takes into account more recent discoveries and cultural changes. Definitely a holistic pro-life approach that actually defines pro-life as being about more than just abortion, which I appreciate.

I was thoroughly impressed with how the Brecks discussed such difficult subject matter-straightforward but with infinite compassion. While the references come from Orthodox materials, I did not find anything that would differ from any other Christian perspective. Having been referred to the book from a respected Catholic priest, I quickly understood why it was so highly recommended. This book is both excellent resource and sympathetic guide for anyone undergoing these complicated issues.
