Annie Douglass Lima considers herself fortunate to have traveled in twenty different countries and lived in four of them. A fifth-grade teacher in her “other” life, she loves reading to her students and sparking their imaginations. Her books include science fiction, fantasy, YA action and adventure novels, a puppet script, poetry, a Bible verse coloring and activity book, and a cookbook. When she isn’t teaching or writing, Annie can often be found sipping spiced chai or pomegranate green tea in exotic locations, some of which exist in this world.
An excellent cookbook loaded with interesting and healthy recipes as well as basic nutritional information. My favorite is the avocado chicken salad. To save time, I sometimes use canned chicken. I'm looking forward to trying several more, but will have to stock up on some things that I don't normally have on hand in the pantry.
If you're used to the usual ingredients in most recipes, you're likely to encounter a few things you've never heard of in this book. This is a good thing, since the entire point of the book is to eat healthy, but it would have been helpful if it included some introductions, definitions, and hints for anyone new to them, which is likely to be the case for someone changing their diet for health reasons.
For example, you may not have ever heard of or used quinoa (pronounced keen-wah). I loved the use of maple syrup as a sweetener in many of the recipes. Make sure that it's authentic maple syrup, and not the artificially flavored version typically found in grocery stores. That would be entirely counter-productive as far as health is concerned. I assume "coconut amino" is coconut oil. If it's something different, it would have been helpful to include that.
If your grocery store doesn't carry some of these more unusual items, check online. And it goes without saying that organic is best. It probably would have been helpful to include a list of unhealthy things lurking in your pantry that you should throw away, too. The typical American diet is horribly unhealthy between processed food and all the chemical additives, which is why there are so many chronic diseases these days. Changing your eating habits isn't easy, but this book can be a tremendous help for finding healthy alternatives.
If you're already familiar with this type of healthy cooking-from-scratch then you'll love these creative, delicious, recipes and the wonderful variety along with several mouth-watering illustrations. We can all get stuck in what we eat and you never know if your favorite recipe may be right there, just waiting for you to give it a try. Just be sure to plan ahead and make sure you have everything you need on-hand to avoid last-minute trips to the grocery store in the height of commuter traffic.
Healthy Liver, Happy Heart by Annie Douglass Lima is a great cookbook focused on delicious, healthy recipes, especially for those who struggle with heart or liver problems. It contains a thorough list of recipes for every occasion, including breakfasts, drinks, and desserts.
The book contains instructions on best usage, which includes a handy symbol guide that shows which recipes are gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, nut-free, quick and easy, and one pot/easy cleanup. The table of contents makes it easy to find whatever you need, and the symbols appear next to every entry.
Because many store-bought ingredients in her recipes include large amounts of sodium, preservatives, and other substances that do not promote a healthy heart and liver, Annie also includes recipes about how to make some basic ingredients, including yogurt, broth, pumpkin puree, condiments, and salad dressings. They make it super easy to ensure even your base ingredients are heart and liver healthy as well as the meals you make from them.
This cookbook is very well laid out for easy use and contains appealing pictures scattered throughout. The recipes are designed to be delicious as well as healthy, and I look forward to trying many of them.
I have received a free copy of this book. All opinions are my own, and I was not compensated for sharing them.
This cookbook is well thought out and organized, with notes included with healthy tidbits about the various ingredients used in the recipes, as well as some variations that can be used to tailor them to your individual needs. The images also give a tasty idea of what to expect.
The way it is organized makes it fairly easy to find what you're looking for. And I definitely appreciated that there were recipes for items that can be used solo, or as ingredients in other recipes, such as yogurt, various sauces and seasonings, as well as basic staples such as chicken stock.
I tried a few recipes that are more suited to my family. We particularly enjoyed the Black Bean Soup. It was simple and easy to make, with ingredients everyone is sure to recognize. And the taste was pretty darn amazing. We'll definitely be making it again, though we'll likely add a pinch or two of salt ;)
We also tried the Chicken Chow Mein, which was both tasty and pleasing to the palette. There are quite a few other recipes I wanted to try before posting this, but there are too many good ones, and I appreciate the various spice mix recipes included. I've been looking for some good, low to no sodium spice mixes and know these will serve my family well.
This is an innovative, refreshingly unique cookbook that brings together an exciting fusion of Asian, African, Pacific, and European flavours. The recipes are good, honest, and beautifully balanced, proof that “healthy” and “delicious” can absolutely coexist.
Each recipe is thoughtfully explained, clearly tested, and supported by smart suggestions for swapping ingredients to suit different dietary needs; vegan, gluten-free, or nut-free. I especially love the handy visual icons that make it easy to find what suits your goals at a glance.
There’s genuinely something for everyone here, from high-protein breakfasts and high-fibre snacks to wholesome mains, sweet treats, and clever ideas for preparing healthy staples like lean meats, tofu, and grains.
Whether you’re eating the rainbow, managing your weight, planning a plant-based week, or just looking for fresh, nutritious inspiration, Healthy Liver, Happy Heart is a joy to cook from; practical, inclusive, and full of flavour. A must-have for anyone who wants to balance great taste and great health outcomes.
This is a cookbook that should be in everyone’s kitchen. Frankly, with the news headlines sounding out about health issues, this is the book to have. It will help reshape your eating habits and improve your health. Good for the younger folks to get a headstart on these things before the aging process creeps up on you. Since my wife and I have seen over seven decades on this planet we are now having to watch our diet and health more closely. This cookbook is a blessing in this time of our life. We are definitely going to try as may of these receipts as possible. There is one we really enjoy – Grain-Free Nut Granola. This one has replaced the candies we snack on at night while we watch the TV. Very good and healthy. Make sure you get this new cookbook by Annie Douglass Lima and start a wonderful adventure eating healthy and being happy.
With pre-processed foods being so quick and easy, folks don’t realize how much nutrition they lack, or how unhealthy they are for you. These recipes all made from scratch, might take a little longer to make, but the health benefits and flavor difference is amazing. I wasn’t able to make some due to my own diet restrictions, but, oh, my, the ones I did! Reminds me of being in my Grandmas kitchen helping as a child. The tastes and smells alone make the effort worthwhile. Knowing they are healthy, too, is the complete package for me. I will keep exploring these recipes for a long time to come.
In full disclosure, I was gifted a pre-published copy of this cookbook, but my review is a true and honest representation of my thoughts concerning the material.
I found the cookbook easy to use and thoughtfully laid out. The recipes covered a variety of tastes and health concerns. The instructions were easy to follow and simple, while not insulting. There were several new dishes, and I am eagerly looking forward to trying the Sticky Japanese Salmon.
Great for those who want healthy, hearty foods! I love recipes that use whole foods/healthy ingredients. Plus, some recipes, like the blueberry muffins, took only minutes to whip up. I am looking forward to enjoying a fresh batch this week. I also really loved the chicken broth. It's fabulous in soups or even drunk from a nice, warm mug. (Yes, I like drinking broth.) I am looking forward to trying more of the recipes. Would definitely recommend this cookbook.
This cookbook has a nice variety of easy to make recipes that really pack in the flavor! I sampled at least one of each section and found them all to be user friendly and simple to both make and adjust to my families taste! I’m a fan of cooking from scratch and love finding healthy alternatives so this cookbook was right up my alley!
I haven't had a chance to try these recipes yet but they look delicious and appear to have easy healthy adaptations. They sound delicious and my husband was just looking for some new bread recipes so we're anxious to give them a try.
I haven't had the opportunity to use many of the recipes, but am looking forward to trying more of them. One thing that I really like is Annie has included the nutritional information that is so important to my husbands diet. It definitely comes in handy when planning meals.
"Healthy Liver, Happy Heart" is full of great recipes for anyone who loves to cook delicious meals from scratch to avoid unhealthy foods that are rich in carbs, high in caloric intake, and contain ingredients that often cause allergies. The variety of recipes is excellent. I particularly loved the baked chicken with zucchini.
My daughter has many food allergies, and I plan on buying her "Healthy, Liver, Happy Heart" as a Christmas gift. Just glancing through the recipes, I saw several that I know she would enjoy because many of the recipes use substitute ingredients, e.g., dairy milk.
Annie also includes an easy-to-use chart for those who have specific food requirements.
I highly recommend "Healthy Liver, Happy Heart" for those with liver and heart issues, as well as anyone who wants to eat healthier and avoid processed foods as much as possible. I look forward to enjoying more of Annie’s original recipes.
