LOL I actually finished reading this at like 12:17 AM but GR won't let me put 10/31 as the read date so 🤷🏻‍♀️😇 (Also if I hadn't futzed around on my computer so long trying to find next reads I would've finished it in basically a day...)

It's got a very typical annoying start - but I figured like "dude has an unspeakable tragic backstory" which ... literally the case here - fucking shitass stupid evil fuck emperor made mess and forbid him from ever speaking of it again. And maybe there's like cultural differences etc cuz I'm like "at the point where the emperor died ... why ... adhere to it so strictly at least to FL?" granted when they first meet again things are FROSTY. Which ... yeah he had good reason for doing everything he did. *sigh* And I can't even be mad at him for not explaining because he literally couldn't.
AND I don't blame him for not just staying in his family, and instead giving up basically his whole life to ~exile himself to Youzhou and save the court. He wanted to bring his army back.

And when everything happened I cried. I also though "man - if this is ever adapted to a cdrama - and honestly it should be; it's much better than a lot of other books that have been chosen that I've seen recently ..." ANYWAY. "this scene will be so impactful and there will be massive waterworks."
ML won me over faster than I expected; I was ready to settle in and hate him for a long ass time. In fact I even got mad at FL for freezing him out. [Chick HE SAVED YOUR LIFE A BUNCH.] I liked her eldest cousin a lot; tbh I wish he'd gotten way more screen time than her annoying 2nd cousin. Like, author, do better with your SMLs or just don't bother. He was an annoying sad sack. Felt like a petty bitch baby too.

That being said, once you get over the annoying [which isn't that long, tbh - esp for a cnovel], the rest of the story is so good. Even the stuff that makes you "grr."
I was a bit annoyed with the "baddie" like ugh - how could he be so relentlessly powerful. But this is also a little bit of a turn your brain off read. Not SILLY by any means. Just ... not a SO VERY SRS book.
But clearly I enjoyed it a good bit.

Definitely a B-, maybe a straight B.
I'm already going to look for other books by this author.

❌ Marriage first, love later? Nah.
✅✅✅✅✅ DIVORCE FIRST, LOVE LATER? YES!

This basically sums it up. Just after 6 months of marriage, what greeted Changsun Shenrong was a divorce letter instead of her actual husband, Shan Zong. Three years later, due to some circumstances, Shenrong met him again in a military post. Gone was the illustrious and noble eldest young master of the prestigious Shan Family, what she before her now was a roguish and arrogant Youzhou military commander who was isolated from everybody else, even to his own family.

I honestly love their dynamics. Since they were a divorced couple, their interactions were actually full of banters and teasing, but also you would notice how Shan Zong was really indulging her every single time. I also love that you really need to read between the lines when it came to these two. Shan Zong was ordered to go to war the night of his marriage and then 6 months after, he divorced her. They didn’t know each other before marriage, so they were basically strangers. But still, apparently, when his soldiers asked Shan Zong what he thought of his newly-married wife, he said “I’m lucky.�� And he was clearly looking-forward to their married life. But fate and that freaking old emperor were so cruel to him, he had to divorce her and isolate himself — Forever in Youzhou, never to leave Youzhou. That was his oath.

When they met again, it was pretty fun and entertaining how they learned more of each other and actually understand each other more than anybody else. He was the local lord in the land, nobody could decipher him, BUT HER. She was the most pampered darling of her family, nobody could understand her, BUT HIM. He said in his divorce later that they were not fated and was destined to not be together, but oh boy, was he wrong. They were a match made in heaven, and no matter how long it took, they would still find their way to each other.

I also love that they were both smart and cunning, and the author actually showed us that. Changsun Shenrong and Shan Zong were two individuals who had deep minds — they were able to see through people. I love that they didn’t really have any problems with each other aside from that premise that he divorced her.

“Shan Zong, Youzhou militia commander, wishes to request marriage to Changsun Shen Rong, noble lady of the Duke of Zhao’s mansion in Chang’an.”

His heartfelt proposal, after actually knowing each other, and this was even his last chance to do so as she was already leaving. He should not have come by the way, but he still did. If there is one thing about Shan Zong, he was the epitome of “If he wanted to, he would.”

He knew it was his fault. He knew that it was audacious of him to even ask the second time around. But, he still desperately did. He knew that he would be rejected as it was probably just revenge on her part, but he still tried. He was so close to feeling depressed or was depressed already, feeling utterly useless in front of her, so much for a fearsome military commander. He deserved to grovel and just did so. He even had to prepare himself get rejected when she told him that she would finally give him her answer. He said, “There are many things one must try, even knowing they’re hopeless. Regretlessness can only be claimed after one has done it.”

“Plead with me, and I might consider becoming husband and wife with you again.”

Changsun Shenrong’s answer was just soooo her and I loved it so much. She deserved to be treated rightfully and she made sure that he would do just that, and yes, he did just that this time around. I honestly loved that she was willing to try again. Even if they were just strangers before when they got married, the feelings were already there as they had expected to be with each from then on. So, her disappointment, anger, and disdain towards him was all rightfully valid. There was a reason, but she was still a victim in the end. Her wanting her revenge and making him feel regret were all valid at this point. Honestly, to trust a person and love him again took a lot of courage. Shenrong was indeed a strong and bold woman.

Another thing I love about this couple, they knew the worth of each other and they were never shy about it. This novel is such a gem. The battle scenes were also amazing! The climax of the story was so heartbreakingly beautiful, it made me cry so hard.

Also! I LOVE THE SIDE COUPLE — CHANGSUN XIN AND SHAN YING. When Changsun Xin first mentioned Shan Ying, I immediately felt the chemistry. He was a scholarly gentleman, she was a general. They were so fitting! I love their dynamics too. 🙂‍↔️
