Conversational Commentaries

Ephesians: Life Together in Christ

Rate this book
An Accessible Verse-by-Verse Commentary of Ephesians

Choosing a Bible commentary can be a daunting prospect. With complex terms and dense exposition, many are tailored to scholarly theologians rather than everyday believers. And for those selecting resources in order to lead a small-group Bible study, speak at a women’s gathering, or simply grow in their knowledge of God’s Word, it can be hard to know where to start.

With warmth and clarity, Megan Hill makes in-depth Bible study accessible without diminishing the richness of God’s Word. Verse by verse, Hill guides readers through the full ESV text of Ephesians to aid their personal study, group discussion, teaching, and outreach. Ephesians teaches us about how God’s work of redemption makes us alive, why the church is so important, and what it means to live in Christ. Each volume in the Conversational Commentary series includes an engaging introduction, historical and cultural background, key themes, and suggestions for deeper study.

An accessible commentary for women on the book of Ephesians. I am so excited to read more from this series after finishing this one. Whether you are leading a Bible study and need a commentary to accompany your study, doing your own personal study time, or looking for a devotional, this book is perfect. It works through the book of Ephesians just like any commentary would, but it is conversational and not overwhelming. It isn’t exhaustive. It is easy to read and understand.
It is not dense or heavy, but instead feels like a thoughtful, conversational guide with helpful application. I am excited that this is part of a growing series and believe it will be a great blessing to women.

They are theologically deep and full of application. This is a really solid Bible study tool, as the author draws from John Stott, D. A. Carson, among others.

This book would pair beautifully with Lydia Brownback’s Bible study workbook from the Flourish series on the book of Ephesians.
The book of Ephesians is full of the transforming work of Christ in the believer’s life, the importance of the church, and rich practical application.
One of my favorite quotes:

“What might it look like to emulate Paul’s submission to God’s providence? You’re not simply a patient at the cancer center; you’re Christ’s patient. You’re not answering ultimately to a difficult boss; you’re working for Christ. You’re not at the mercy of a negligent landlord; you live in Christ’s kingdom. He is with you, He has good purposes for you, and He will bring you out of your hard situation at just the right time.”

I will be referencing this wonderful Bible study resource more in the future and am so thankful to have it in my library.

*I received a copy of this book for my honest thoughts.

I loved tracing the line of Paul’s thought through his letter to the Ephesians in Megan Hill’s conversational commentary. She tells the story of his unfolding teaching and instruction in a clear way, and I’m coming away from this book with a stronger grasp of the epistle as a whole. I also learned a handful of new things along the way.

This book served as a Sabbath meditation for me—the commentary is readable in a day, and it served that purpose very well.

Of course, I have a few quibbles—such as not agreeing that Satan is presently bound (!). But on the whole, and in nearly all its particulars, this was an enjoyable and edifying read.

One of the commentaries I consulted each week as I preached through Ephesians. This one surprised me as possibly my favorite resource to consult each week. Written as an accessible commentary for women as they read and study the Bible, I found Hill’s approach to Paul’s argument and exposition of the text faithful and helpful each week. I rarely read it without gleaning something new I hadn’t considered, even if it was just a different angle of application. In fact, I particularly appreciated her unique applications for each passage to women or Christian’s in general and her focus on the centrality of the local church. I’m now interested in other volumes in this series.
