My world shifted when I realized I wasn’t completely straight, all thanks to the crush I’ve developed on my professor. My girlfriend dumped me, and I had to move back in with my dad. Worst of all, the professor who awakened something in me now seems to despise me for it.
Isaac Kendall is brilliant and passionate and maybe a little mysterious if there’s any truth to the rumors about his dark past.
In a town like Viridian Falls, everyone has their secrets. But his are the ones that keep pulling me closer until I might just be leaning too far.
Isaac Kendall
For too long, I’ve carried the weight of mistakes this town refuses to let me forget. Rumors cling to me like shadows I can’t shake. My classroom is the one place where I still feel in control, at least until Jackson Ellis walks in.
He’s all bright eyes and temptation. Eager to learn. And far too curious about the parts of me I’ve spent years burying.
But desire is a dangerous thing in a town that feeds off whispers. The closer Jackson gets, the more I fear the past might come back to claim us both.
Hands Like Ours was originally a 22k word novella that first appeared in the We Shall Rise anthology. It has been revised and extended into the first full novel of the Viridian Falls series—a dark MM series where desire and danger blur, the shadows are always watching, and some secrets refuse to stay buried.
River Hale is a pseudonym, created because her mother once told her that she'll read everything she ever writes. She's a writer with a tea addiction and a love for everything dark, twisted, haunted, and beautiful. She's written and published more appropriate books that her mother is allowed to read under her real name, but she'll always have a special place in her heart for dark romance.
“‘ Hold my hand in yours, and we will not fear what hands like ours can do.’”
Starting 2026 with this book was such a... Wonderful gift 🤭💞💞💞. I honestly didn’t know what to expect when I picked it up but I quickly found myself completely absorbed. From the first few chapters the story pulled me in and before I knew it I was fully invested, emotionally, mentally, and occasionally yelling at the characters like they could hear me. There is an amazing balance between suspense, engaging plot twists, and those quieter, reflective moments that make the characters feel real and relatable.
What I loved most is that there is never a dull moment. Every chapter brings something new, an unexpected twist, a juicy revelation, or a tiny detail that makes you stop and think. The pacing keeps you on your toes but it is not just constant action; the story gives you space to care about the characters, to wonder about their choices, and to get excited for what might come next. The relationship between Isaac and Jackson was especially captivating. Isaac’s fear of being left alone and Jackson’s need to feel wanted fit together like two pieces of a puzzle. I loved them both but I couldn’t help feeling particularly attached to Jackson. His life, his struggles, and the way he stood up for himself throughout the whole book was incredibly refreshing and made his character SO SOO SOOO unforgettable.
I am already eager for the next book and cannot stop thinking about the side characters whose stories I hope we will see soon. This read was thoughtful, immersive, and surprisingly fun, with a depth that made it feel more than just a story, it felt like stepping into a world I did not want to leave. A beautiful, engaging, and slightly addictive way to start the year.
I sincerely hope the author will give us a book about Pierce. I care sooooo deeply about his story and would feel truly sad and incomplete if we never got to experience it. I have been eagerly longing to know what happens to him, to see his journey fully unfold, and my heart is DESPERATEEEEEEE for it. Even if his story is not paired with Bodie (though I NEEEED THAT) I hope we still get to have it, because Pierce deserves to have his story told. I can only imagine how wonderful it would be, and I hope with all my heart that we will get to follow him next 🥹🥹🥹💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗.
Jackson and Isaac go on quite a journey together. One that is filled with intrigue, mystery, and intense chemistry from their first interaction. This story focuses on the forbidden relationship between college professor Issac and his student Jackson, who face numerous obstacles to their relationship. However, throughout the course of this story, they prove to one another that they care deeply and will protect each other until their last breath.
Overall, I really enjoyed this dark romance where I was not fully sure where the story would take me, and I fell so hard for both Jackson and Isaac; they both of their own internal struggles, and I was so happy they were able to find one another and slowly move towards a resolution and overall HEA. This series looks promising, and I'm eager to return to this world and see where it goes.
*** I reviewed a complimentary copy of this story.***
I had the opportunity to ARC read this story in exchange for an honest review. Let’s get into my thoughts:
😍 What worked for ME 😍
• Jackson’s character - he pretty much stood true to who he was. He spoke up for himself, he knew when to shut up, he played situations with intelligence and never lost his fire. It was nice to see a character stay true to himself and not act out of character.
• Spice - Despite my feelings about the BDSM and lack of information (see below), when the scenes were playing out, they were delicious. The scenes were very well written which I never worry about with this author.
• Friendships - I loved to see the friendships that Jackson had with Bodie and Erin. I’m glad he had people in his corner, especially once he discovered that he was bisexual (good riddance Molly). Having a support system when your life feels like it’s falling apart is so important and I loved that Jackson had this.
🙃 What didn’t work for ME 🙃
• Romance: where was it? I’m not really sure. It was definitely insta-lust, insta-attraction, but I can’t say I believed the romance. I feel like the author spent a lot of time doing this weird push and pull game, they had ONE moment in the office, and then we had to wait 2 months, and just believe they had growing feelings for one another. I’m the type of reader that needs to FEEL AND SEE the romance. I want to be able to say “yep they’re so in love” before the characters ever utter those words. That was lost for me here.
• The plot: It all felt SO rushed. You’re telling me that Jackson got dumped on him TWO MAJOR THINGS and….that was it? His dad dropped a huge secret and it was like “oh…okay well I don’t have a good relationship with you anyway so I need space.” Then Isaac’s secret was just something we didn’t even really acknowledge because Jackson wanted to get that man in bed more than anything else. Professor Grant being the weird, creepy, homophobic, old man who sexually assaulted everyone in Isaac’s life? He’s the villain in the story and again, there’s no context as to WHY.
WHY did he target Isaac specifically and his family? Why did he target Dylan or anyone Isaac cared about? What was the point? Grant meeting his end was also something that felt like an afterthought. A quick push off the bridge, but not before Jackson managed to catch a secret recording of Grant confessing to everything?? I really feel like this book would have benefited if the author elaborated more on the plot points and spent less time rushing through it and paying attention to the BDSM aspect of the relationship. The ending felt subpar and left me wanting.
• BSDM: how does a virgin (to men and this lifestyle) MC just jump head first into a BDSM relationship? This was very different than Isaac liking to take control, this was full dom/sub. I, personally (back off heathens), don’t like the concept of jumping into something this serious like Dom/sub with no consent, explanation, limits, etc. discussed. I feel like RH (the author) threw in “during the time we’ve reacquainted after 2 months of celibacy, we discussed limits, safe words, etc.” it felt like another afterthought. If BDSM is going to be a MAIN plot point, then I need those details to be part of the “meat and potatoes”. Jackson being “so smart” and already knowing his color was green in the office, was so unrealistic. The rest of the story felt like they didn’t communicate; they just wanted to eff each other’s brains out. I have no quarrels with that if it adds to the plot, which I felt inevitably did not. This type of relationship requires SO MUCH trust. As a reader, I didn’t see any of this. Why wasn’t the trust building on the page? Why did I just have to assume it was there? Again, things that wouldn’t bother me if BDSM wasn’t such a major plot point.
• Relationships: What in the world was the point of having an estranged relationship with his father that ultimately gets “fixed” or “accepted” by the end? Let me clarify, gets accepted in the end without us as the readers seeing the progression. His father cut him off for years (emotionally), was basically absent and they always fought. All of a sudden his father apologized (random even to Jackson) and it’s like his dad was…there. The implication that their relationship got better without actually seeing it, is another thing that rubbed me wrong. If Dad wasn’t a main character and the arc of their relationship wasn’t a major plot point, then I wouldn’t care. But when authors make certain things plot points, I really like when they follow through and make it, make sense. This relationship ultimately didn’t.
Ultimately, I liked the book. There were some major plot points I feel like either didn’t hit or were missed but it was a good story. I’m definitely intrigued and RH (the author) has my interest with what’s going on with Bodie and Jackson’s father. We will see where RH takes us next in Viridian falls. I wish them the best of luck during their upcoming release!
"I trace his mouth with my thumb, then kiss him like the world has finally stopped trying to break us. He tastes like hope, like everything I never believed I deserved."
Hands Like Ours is book 1 in the new Viridian Falls series by one of my faves, River Hale and it's Isaac and Jackson's story.
This one was originally a novella in an anthology, which I think explains why it doesn't have the usual pacing and spectacular plot-building that I am used to with River's books, and it definitely has a different, contemporary feel.
What To Expect:
🖤MM romance 🖤Dark themes 🖤Age gap 🖤Professor/student 🖤Bi-awakening 🖤First times 🖤Spice 🖤Secrets 🖤HEA
I love River Hale and will read basically anything by them. While their Far From series was my first introduction to them, I tend to like their completely original books more, so I'm glad that they just released another one.
This was originally a novella/short-story, so it might seem familiar to some but it was my first time to read anything with these characters.
I loved both Isaac and Jackson. They both needed hugs. I thought the development of their relationship and transition into the BDSM side of it was very good.
A lot of author's try to include twists in their stories, but I usually figure then out beforehand. However, this time I did not, at least not all of it.
If you like Hale's other books, definitely give this one a read. You won't be disappointed!
I actually liked that more than I thought I would!! It basically contained almost every trope I love: bi-awakening, age gap, forbidden, and a little hurt/comfort. There was just enough spice as there was a plot too. I loved the dominant but gentleness that Isaac brought into their relationship. I loved how easily Jackson saw the good parts in Isaac no one else looked for. He may have held onto the rumors a little but the moment after the bridge changed things for them, it quite literally bridged the gap that made them fully understand each other. The feeling of safety, comfortability, and trust Jackson felt around Isaac was beautiful and definitely had me choked up at dome points 🥹 The way Isaac spoke about him not only to himself and to Jackson, but Jackson’s dad too. That he would never ever hurt Jackson and would protect him to no end. He never knew what falling in love REALLY felt like until Jackson and I just 😭 He really said to himself he now understands why people right poetry about this, why they call it falling. He fell for Jackson in a way he didn’t know was possible.
The plot twists in this book I also didn’t see coming at all, especially Dylan being the half brother. I sort of caught on to the fact that Grant was the mastermind behind all of this but was still a little surprised by what happened in his office with Jackson and it made me SICK!!! That man honestly deserved more than to be thrown off a bridge… just saying. Then there was the Pierce apology and that made me convinced he would be the next book with Bodie and serve a bully/redemption trope. BUT, instead we see Bodie and Jackson’s dad??? That’s tea and I’m here for it honestly.
Anyway, I did love them! I really did enjoy the gentle dominance that Isaac had towards Jackson. The way he put his safety and comfort above all else. Our pure boy deserved the entire world and Isaac was able to provide that for him.
— quotes :)
“It’s entirely unfair how hot Professor Kendall looks in those damn suit vests. After about the eightieth time I caught myself staring at him and having that thought, I realized something. I have a crush on my professor.”
“At the first taste of him, I begin to come apart. Not breaking, but unraveling gently and willingly. The world loosens its hold on me, and I let it. I am undone, and all I want is more.”
“I’m weak, but I’m not careless. But, when it comes to Jackson, I fear I may be doomed no matter how careful I am.”
“His eyes—those sharp, searching green ones that sparkle just like emeralds when the light hits them—find mine from across the room, and for a second, I almost forget how to breathe.”
“Even if I don’t understand what we are, or what the hell just happened on this bridge… Right now, in his hands, in his kiss, I feel wanted. And God help me, I want him to never let go.”
“And then he whispers my name again, softer this time, like it’s something fragile he’s afraid to lose. “Isaac.”” — “It feels like forgiveness whispered against my lips.”
“I’ve only known Jackson for a semester. We’ve only kissed a handful of times. But there’s something about his soul that calls to mine, that makes me believe we’re both exactly where we’re meant to be.”
“”I love your hands,” I say, brushing my thumb along the length of his. “They fit so perfectly with mine.” — “He peers up at me, a brilliant, beautiful smile on his face, his emerald eyes sparkling. “I think we fit pretty perfectly too.”” — “So do I.”
“I kept waking up to check if you were still here.” — “I’m not going anywhere,” I tell him. “Not unless you send me away.” — Never.” (Yeah this made me CRY!!)
“Eventually, we’ll replace this clasp with a lock that only I’ll have a key to. Make it official that you’re mine forever. That you’re not allowed to leave.” — “I don’t need a collar for that, Isaac. I was always going to stay whether I’m wearing your collar or not.”
“There’s something impossibly freeing about giving myself to him, surrendering my body, about choosing to let go and trust his hands more than my own doubts. Like my body isn’t mine anymore. Not in a frightening way, but in a way that lets me breathe. Under his control, I’m not less. I’m exactly where I want to be.”
“I’m yours, Isaac,” I tell him easily. “I’m yours. I’m real. And I’m staying.”
“Moving his hand from my throat to cup my jaw, he presses his mouth to mine and whispers against my lips that I’m his. Don’t disappear. They’re not words spoken aloud, but I can hear them in his kiss. Don’t disappear. And in that fragile, tender second, I realize I’m not the only one who finally feels wanted.”
“He’s afraid I’ll leave. I’m afraid he’ll want me to leave. Maybe there’s a reason we found each other. Maybe we’re exactly what each other needed.”
“I need you, Isaac,” he says again. “I need you so fucking badly it hurts sometimes. But I don’t care how much it hurts. I’m not going anywhere. I’m not running away from it, not gonna let it scare me off. I want all of it. All of this. All of you. I’m staying because I… I love you.”
“I thought I had loved before, but this? For the first time, I understand why people write poetry about this. Why they ruin themselves for it. Why they call it falling. “I love you too, Jackson.”” — “More than I ever knew it was possible to love someone. And yet falling for you was the easiest thing I’ve ever done.” (Like stop😭)
“He’s here. He’s mine. Another word that hits me square in the chest. And I’m still trying to earn that, trying to be the man who deserves someone like him. He makes it easy to believe I can be. He reaches for me when he’s nervous or seems haunted by memories. He sleeps curled around me at night or me around him. He trusts me to be there when he needs me. He trusted me before anyone else did.”
“Hold my hand in yours, and we will not fear what hands like ours can do.’”
“He tastes like hope, like everything I never believed I deserved. Our hands find each other on instinct, holding tight—proof that we’re writing a different ending, one that’s finally ours. One where we both get to stay.”
“I love your brilliant mind and your compassionate heart. There’s no timeline in place for anything else. I want you now—right now, just the way you are—and I’ll want you forever.” — “Good. Because I want to belong to you forever.”
“I give him pain because it brings him pleasure. Because it lets him let go, breathe, and feel free in a world that’s taken so much from him. Because with me, he never has to hide the way pain and pleasure twist together until they’re indistinguishable.”
“”I’ll take care of you.” I meant those words, and not just for tonight. I meant them forever. He’ll always be safe in my hands.”

The vibe is dark, heavy, and secretive, and River Hale really knows how to set a mood. Jackson was easily my favourite part of the book. He felt consistent and solid throughout — he knew when to speak up, when to hold back, and he never completely lost himself, even when things got messy. I really appreciated that about him. The attraction between Jackson and Isaac is instant and intense, and the spice… yeah, that worked 😅. Even though I have mixed feelings about the BDSM side of things, the scenes themselves are very well written and emotionally charged. That’s something I always trust this author to deliver. One thing I genuinely loved was Jackson’s friendships, especially with Bodie and Erin. Seeing him have people in his corner while figuring out his bisexuality made a big difference for me. That support system added some warmth to an otherwise pretty heavy story, and I wish we’d gotten even more of it. Where the book lost me a bit was the romance and pacing. The lust and attraction were obvious, but I struggled to really feel the emotional growth between them. There was a lot of push and pull and time passing off-page, and I was kind of expected to believe deeper feelings had developed without seeing much of it. I’m very much a “show me the romance” reader, and here it felt a little undercooked. The plot also felt rushed in places. Some big reveals — family stuff, secrets, and major conflicts — were dropped and then resolved very quickly, without much emotional fallout. The villain especially felt underdeveloped, and the ending of that arc came across more like an afterthought than something fully earned. The BDSM dynamic was another sticking point for me. I’m not against dark dynamics, but jumping so fast into a full dom/sub relationship — especially for a character completely new to that world and adding that it's his bi-awakening— didn’t sit right with me. Conversations about limits, consent, and trust felt more implied than shown, and for a relationship that depends so heavily on trust, I really needed to see that on the page. But don't get me wrong, the scenes were HOT AF!!!!! The same goes for Jackson’s relationship with his father. It’s set up as a big emotional issue, but the resolution happens mostly off-page, and we’re just meant to assume things got better. I wanted to actually see that growth happen. Overall, I did enjoy Hands Like Ours. The writing is strong, the atmosphere works, and Jackson is a great main character. Some emotional beats and plot points didn’t fully land for me, but I’m still very curious about what’s coming next — especially when it comes to Bodie and Jackson’s dad 👀. I’ll definitely keep reading, even if a bit cautiously.
I received a copy of this book from the author, and this is my honest review.

First and foremost, I want to thank the author for allowing me to be a part of her ARC team and review her work before its release. I truly appreciate her trust in my thoughts and feedback as a reader.
This story announces itself immediately as the work of River Hale. From the opening pages, the atmosphere is heavy and somber, drenched in gloom and quiet tension, yet punctuated by moments of sharp, dark humor that cut through the darkness without weakening it. That balance, oppressive yet self-aware is something the author does exceptionally well, and it grounds the story from the very beginning. The central dynamic between the characters unfolds with care and intention. Isaac, a professor shaped by abandonment and lingering loss, is not cruel or predatory, but hollowed out by the things he never allowed himself to grieve, still reaching for a reason to love. Jackson, his student, masks his vulnerability with rebellion, yet beneath the sharp edges lies an aching self-consciousness about his talent, his sexuality, and the crushing expectations placed on him by others. The story at its core is ultimately about trust, how fragile it is, how easily it fractures, and how desperately it is needed. Can Isaac trust Jackson? Can Jackson trust Isaac? Trust between dom and sub, between professor and student, and within a town where being different is treated as a moral failure. Rumors carry weight, whispers distort truth, and anonymous emails from ghosts haunt the present, forcing both men to question what, and who they can truly believe. Both characters are deeply wounded, carrying grief and loss that have left invisible scars. They come together not to save one another, but because they recognize something familiar in each other that calls to the other. Even as their demons loom large, the desire for connection persists, aching and unresolved, making every step forward feel both necessary and dangerous. The novel continuously toes the line between morality and ethics, challenging the reader to sit with discomfort rather than offering easy answers. It asks whether boundaries exist to protect, to control, or to absolve, and it refuses to simplify the consequences of crossing them. This tension is intimate, emotional, and ethical, and this is where the story truly thrives. And then comes the twist. The kind that makes you gasp, the kind you should see coming in hindsight, yet somehow don’t. It lands with devastating precision, reframing everything that came before and delivering a genuine, full-body shock. In the end, Hands Like Ours is a deeply affecting story about trust and forgiveness when it comes to others, but most importantly when it comes to oneself. It’s about releasing the weight of the past, learning to live in the present, and daring to imagine a future that feels uncertain but possible.
Hands Like Ours is book one in the Viridian Falls series. This MM dark romance story is about Jackson and Isaac.
Jackson is in his last year of undergrads at Viridian Falls University when he develops a crush on Professor Isaac Kendall. He had always considered himself straight, but this crush made Jackson realize he is bisexual. Isaac is a brilliant and passionate professor of world literature at Viridian Falls University. In addition to being one of the youngest professors on campus, he is also one of the most intimidating. Isaac has a past that continues to haunt him. There are dark rumors about him that would make some people leave town, but he has his reasons as to why he stays.
As Jackson starts speaking up more during Isaac’s lectures, he proves to Isaac he has a brilliant mind. I loved seeing these two connect and share their love of literature. Soon we see how Isaac tries to fight off his budding attraction for Jackson.
Because of what happened in Isaac’s past, he is on a short leash with the university. He made a promise that he’d never do anything else that would threaten the reputation of the school. Therefore Isaac had to make sure to keep himself inline and had to hold back his feelings when it came to Jackson. But Isaac eventually does give in to Jackson. They go through some ups and downs and have challenges to overcome to be together. Isaac and Jackson were just what each other needed. They had a Dom/Sub dynamic, and although Jackson was new to it, he seemed to be a natural.
This book wasn’t as dark as I thought it would be. It was full of secrets and mysteries, and there was one twist I was not expecting. I do have to say I struggled a bit with Isaac. I understand he had issues because of his past, but I don’t know if I felt he was over everything that happened, especially with his previous lover. It was hard for me not to think that Jackson was just a replacement.
Overall, I did enjoy this story and I am interested to see what will come next in this series.
I received an advanced copy of this book, and this is my honest review.
I was very lucky to have to opportunity to read this ARC before release (which is tomorrow so if you haven't already go pre order!!!)
I loved every book form this authors far (expecially the far from series omg) so of course I jumped at the opportunity to read one of her new releases!
Hands Like Ours is one of those books that quietly grips you—and then refuses to let go. From the very first pages, River Hale establishes a moody, intimate atmosphere that feels both grounded and emotionally charged, setting the tone for what becomes a deeply affecting read. The writing is elegant without being overwrought: emotions are shown rather than explained, and small, seemingly ordinary moments carry a surprising amount of weight.
The characters feel achingly human—flawed, guarded, and shaped by past choices in ways that feel authentic rather than dramatic for drama’s sake. Their inner lives are rich, and the slow unveiling of their vulnerabilities is one of the novel’s greatest strengths.
What truly elevates this book is the emotional tension. The connections between characters are layered and nuanced, built on shared history, unspoken feelings, and moments of quiet intensity. The pacing is deliberate, but never dull; instead, it allows the relationships to breathe and develop naturally. When the story hits its emotional peaks, they feel earned—and they linger.
I also loved the little mystery nuances in this book they gave the whole story this eerily beauty that I really loved.
Overall, Hands Like Ours is a poignant, atmospheric, and emotionally resonant story that stays with you long after the final page. A strong start to the Viridian Falls series and an easy recommendation for readers who love character-driven romance with depth and heart.
Picking up this book it took me a minute to remember that I had in fact read a shorter version of it before. So if the story sounds familiar to you, that is why! The story has been expanded which once I familiarized myself with what I originally read, I was excited to see more details given to the story. Everything changes for Jackson when he realizes he is in fact not straight. And it starts with a crush on a professor. But too bad for Jackson, acknowledging that meant that his girlfriend dumps him and then the whole campus finds out. And no one is treating him that great except his two best friends. Even Professor Kendall. The man not only Jackson has a crush on but the one who Jackson had a great connection in class. But even he is treating him different. Isaac knows he has to keep his distance from Jackson. Rumors have spiraled about him in the past when his last relationship with a student ended when the student disappeared without a word on why he left. With threats to his job, Isaac has kept in line. But Jackson threatens Isaac’s control. And with the chemistry between them, well, it makes it harder and harder to keep it. As they try to navigate this growing things between them, there are outside threats of not only about them but the threat of history repeating itself. Can Jackson and Isaac stop that from happening? This had such a good suspense feel to it on top of being a romance. It made it so easy to get lost in the story and fuel your need to find out what happens next. I’m interested in seeing where this series goes and I have a feeling on who is up next!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book wrapped itself around my heart and refused to let go. Jackson’s unraveling—his longing to be seen, to be cared for, to finally feel safe in wanting what he wants—felt achingly real, and watching him open so gently and naturally for Isaac was nothing short of beautiful. And Isaac… sweet, broken, misunderstood Isaac, carrying the weight of a town’s cruelty while still offering tenderness, patience, and devotion where no one else ever truly dared. Their connection blooms in the kind of way that feels less like falling and more like coming home.💚
Their love is forbidden…. but it is emotional, reverent, and deeply earned, with intimacy that feels purposeful rather than gratuitous. And yes—the spice was beautiful. I am, respectfully, a whore for a good boy, and Jackson is the softest, most earnest good boy, while Isaac is a relentless, sadistic sir who always delivers on every promise he makes. A giver in every sense of the word.😏
I also ATE UP the mystery threaded through the story, that constant hum of why??🤨
It Kept me turning pages. I spent the entire book guessing, theorizing, and second-guessing myself, and when everything finally clicked into place, I felt that delicious satisfaction of I knew it. It made the emotional payoff hit even harder.😫
Thank you, River, for trusting me enough to let me be part of your journey, for letting me scream in your DMs, and for creating something that clearly came from the heart. This story is tender, dark, sexy, and full of soul. I love you, friend—never give up, and please keep writing stories like this one. I’ll be here, ready to fall apart all over again.💚
I am a HUGE RH fan! Like huge. I’ll read anything River writes, so of course I had to jump on this one for the holidays ! (It’s not a Christmas book, but does have a wintery theme that I absolutely loved!)
The amount of secrets I could share with you.. but I’m not going to. I can’t. It would spoil the whole thing.. so I’ll say this. Not everything is what it seems! And doesn’t Isaac know it 😏
Very early on in the book Jackson has a big revelation. He’s had a bit of a bi-awakening moment that leads him into one of the worst months of his life.. he’s lost everything. Everyone. And he’s moved back home to live with his dad who he hasn’t really spent much time with for years.. it couldn’t get any worse.
We’re talking forbidden romance here right? Like absolutely, 100%, DO NOT fall for your teacher forbidden.. but these two?! Well there’s just something pulling them together, something they can’t fight. Even if everything is telling them they should.
The spice was HOT, as usual. It does focus on a BDSM relationship, so make sure you’re okay with all that comes with that. I always love a Dom/Sub dynamic, and these two perfected it. It was beautiful.
As their secrets come out, their relationship grows, and their feelings become too much to fight.. the plot THICKENS even more. And I just had such a great time with these two. They were hot, fun, easy, and suspenseful. I can’t wait for the following books in the series, because 👀 I HAVE GOT TO KNOW that happens with two characters that were mentioned near the end. Colour me curious !
This is a Dark Romance so make sure you check the TWs before heading in. This does have a HEA but it's definitely hard earned so hang in there!
🌶🌶🌶
Ok guys this story has secrets on top of secrets on top of lies on top of secrets so I'm going to give you a bare bones Review to avoid spoilers.
Jackson has a slight crush on his new Professor. This is shocking for 2 reasons...1 Jackson has never had an interest in another man before and 2 Professor Kendall has a well known dark history that follows him around their small town. This doesn't stop Jackson though when opportunity knocks...he takes the chance. Due to this said dark past no one really takes the chance on Isaac Kendall anymore so when Jackson pops up Isaac is immediately on the defense and suspicious of his intentions. They both have to work on trusting eachother as the abandonment issues run deep here. Of course all to soon that dark past comes rushing back and even though Jackson is unaware he might actually be closer to this then he thinks. These two broken boys just needed someone in their corner who wasn't going to leave and they became that for each other 🥹 The plot here.. !!!!!! ...just grabs you from the beginning and doesn't let you go right up until the end! Just plot twist after plot twist! If this isn't on your TBR List it really should be!
River Hale does such an outstanding job of mixing dark with sweet and suspenseful, and this book is no exception!
Hand Like Ours certainly isn't their darker works but the entire setting, the plot, the dynamic between characters gives it all an eerie vibe in the best of ways 🤩.
Isaac & Jackson's journey throughout this book is phenomenal! It's surrounded by mystery, forbidden aspects of a teacher and student, as well as some seriously hot BDSM elements that have you thirsting for more 🥵😘.
There were times I wanted to shake Isaac, but he redeems himself and it also shows Jackson's resiliency and ability to take care of himself. Jackson may be young, naive, and submissive but has a backbone made of steel and goes for what he wants in life. Thankfully, what he wants is Isaac 😈. Honestly this book was perfection in my eyes 😍.
If you're looking for something edgy, and beautiful, with MC's with complex emotions and actions as well as some white hot tension between both of them then look no further! The story is compelling, and the spice is divine 🥵🔥.
I seriously hope River decides to write more of these characters! I am invested. I NEED to know more about Jackson's Dad & Brodie, as well as missing characters 👀... Isn't that the tell of amazing storytelling? Leaving you wanting more and to learn all the secrets 💜🫶.
I loved this book. Issac and Jackson were just perfection. I don't know if I expected it to be darker given the themes, but it was wasn't as dark as I expected. Not that this was a problem it didn't need to be.
The characters were so loveable. The Dom/sub relationship is not always portrayed in the most healthy way in books, I mean I do love darker books and NC/CNC tropes, but there is something so unbelievably hot about a natural Sub and a Dom that takes pleasure in it. Jackson being so needy and finding his freedom, while Issac gives everything of himself.
The development of the relationship between Jackson and Issac, the build of the shared interests. It was so nerdy and cute.
I enjoyed that it was a plot driven book, rather than spice driven. Again I love a spicy book, but I want to stay for the plot and get to know the characters.
The plot had me turning page after page, there were so many turns and twists, and secrets and mysteries to uncover; I was completely gripped.
I really hope there is going to be more books coming in this series, because I really want to know more about some of the characters and the twists and turns.
Ahhh I just loved this! Read it in two sittings because I couldn't put this one down.
If you're looking for a darker romance set in a small town, with great bi-awakening rep, with a bit of the forbidden - since Isaac and Jackson are teacher/student for a semester, then this is one you cannot miss.
The chemistry between Issac and Jackson is just delicious. As the two grow closer, despite knowing that they must resist since Jackson is a student in Isaac's class, they can't ignore that chemistry. I loved them.
At the same time, there is the mystery of what happened to a previous student with connections to Isaac, a mysterious person messaging Jackson, and a threat to Isaac's job from another tenured professor. There is plenty of story mixed in with the romance, and I for one really loved this.
I love River's writing style and their brand of darker romance. I cannot wait for more in this series - definitely excited for what is being set up as the next book! (Seriously, there were like 2 lines and I was immediately *side eye* - I see hat's going on here lol)
I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.
This was such an amazing read. Full of mystery and secrets that kept me intrigued throughout the book. And the forbidden relationship between a professor and student was everything I needed; love it.
Jackson is a college student who is passionate about English literature, and one of the classes he has to attend is World Literature, taught by none other than Isaac.
I love how the interest in each other started, like they both really enjoy discussing in class, and the sparks forming between them from those interactions just seem to deepen that curiosity about each other. Secrets and rumors surround Isaac, something that Jackson is aware of and is very curious about, whether they are real or not.
These two are dealing with a lot in their personal lives, and adding that forbidden attraction doesn’t help but makes them realize how much they keep trying to restrain themselves from things that are inevitably going to happen sooner or later.
Despite all the obstacles they had to overcome, they fall into a pretty sweet relationship, and the BDSM aspect of it really allows them to be who they are, especially Jackson, who is exploring himself, and with Isaac helping him, it is just so amazing and heartwarming. Love these two so much!!!
I’ve gotten into this strange habit of not reading the blurb for a book - or if I do, I promptly forget what I’ve read and have no idea what I’m getting into when I begin a book. With that said, I very much enjoyed the H3LL out of this book! Jackson’s bi-awakening was rough. What he thought would be an accepting moment between him and his girlfriend ended their year-long relationship, forcing him to move back in with his father. On top of all that, the professor who triggered the awakening seems to have it out for him.
Isaac, Jackson’s professor who triggered his bi-awakening, has secrets he’d rather not see the light of day, but when he meets Jackson, his world begins to tilt. Isaac is paranoid that Jackson has been sent to be his ruin, and what’s worse, he fears he may succumb to that ruin.
I really loved the way their relationship developed. The anticipation of not doing anything while they were still teacher and student, the dam breaking when they no longer held that dynamic, and the secrets and drama… I was locked in and on the edge of my seat!
This book had me feeling everything at once, but what really stuck with me was the constant tension and that slow, unsettling feeling that something dark was always nearby. It felt eerie and intense in the best way, and I genuinely couldn’t put it down. The mystery surrounding Isaac kept pulling me in, and the forbidden professor x student dynamic added so much weight to every interaction.
I loved how Jackson and Isaac’s connection started quietly through class discussions. Those moments felt charged, like there was always more being said beneath the surface. Both of them are dealing with their own personal struggles, which made their attraction feel heavier and more complicated, not just something they could ignore or brush off.
When they finally gave in, the relationship felt surprisingly tender and emotional. Watching Jackson explore himself with Isaac’s guidance was powerful and heartfelt, and it made their bond feel deep and real rather than just forbidden. I was completely invested in them and their story.
This is the first book in the new Viridian Falls series and it’s giving us dark MM forbidden romance, professor x student, age gap, bi awakening, praise & kink awakening, bd$m exploration and a touch of suspense to round out the story. It was originally a novella in the We Shall Rise anthology that has since been developed into a full length novel. The secrets and mystery brought another level to the romance and spice and I’m excited to see what comes next.
Jackson always believed he was straight but something within him changes when he meets his new professor. After his girlfriend dumps him, things only get worse when it seems his new crush also has it out for him. Isaac has rumours that cling to him and in a town like Veridian Falls they never let him forget it. His world is shaken up further when he meets his new student Jackson. Isaac tries to keep him at arms length because desire is a dangerous thing in a town that feeds off whispers. The closer Jackson gets, the more Isaac fears the past might come back to claim them both.
Dark Romance Like to Hate to Love Professor/ Student Age gap Pining Secrets BDSM / Praise
“To those who carry shadows they never asked for and are brave enough to let someone see them anyway.”
This was great. I really enjoyed this. The angst, tension, mystery, intrigue… kept the book going.
Jackson, a student at Viridian Falls University, swallowing in his family's footsteps, ends up having a class with Professor Kendall, Isaac.
These two had instant chemistry. They are related to each other intellectually as well. Isaac becomes Jacksons, bi-awakening, so much so his girlfriend breaks up with him once she finds out he is bi.
I think this is the catalyst for Isaac and Jacksons hookup, although it feels so much more than a hookup. Early on, we can see Isaac gives Jackson what he needs. Their dynamic works so well for them.
Aside from Isaac and Jackson, we have a lot of mystery and secrets floating around the school, we also have some nasty players trying to sabotage things.
This kept me going, the plot twists had me gasping, I was not expecting that at all.
Jackson and Isaac were so hot together, sheesh.
Loved how Jackson wanted to save the day and blow all the secrets up to save his man.
This book was so good I read it in one sitting. Before I realized it, I had already finished it.
At first, I was a bit skeptical about this story. I loved Jackson from the start, but it took me longer to warm up to Isaac. He kept pushing Jackson away in a way that felt a bit wrong. However, once I found out why he was acting this way, it didn't take me long to love him as well.
Isaac is vulnerable in a way Jackson isn't. He's so afraid of people he loves abandoning him that it took him a while to truly trust that Jackson was there to stay. There's no mention of him having friends or anyone in his corner, so no one had been there for him for years.
Once Jackson and Isaac truly start to be together and communicate, it was perfect. They were so sweet together. The BDSM was just another way for them to let go and connect.
There are some loose ends that I hope the next books will fill, so I'll definitely read them.
This book was exactly what I needed to close out 2025! Dark, mysterious, and steeped in forbidden MM romance. Jackson and Isaac are two broken souls in very different ways, and when their worlds collide, the chemistry is undeniable. One fears being alone; the other feels unwanted.
Isaac’s lore captivated me from the very beginning, and I was a little worried for my sweet muffin, Jackson. However, Isaac surprised me with his tenderness and compassion toward him, which added an unexpected emotional depth to their relationship.
Jackson is dealing with a lot: a recent breakup, moving back in with a father he has a strained relationship with after his mother’s passing, and coming to terms with his attraction to his professor !! Isaac.
There’s so much to unpack in this story, with major moments that set the stage for what’s to come. I’m already excited to see which characters will be in book two.
Forbidden always hits for me. I couldn’t put this down as the mysterious town of Viridian Falls dragged me in.
Isaac and Jackson were delicious together. The forbidden nature of their relationship as professor and student, the chemistry shown through it their debates and they way they couldn’t keep their eyes off of each other, the tension as they fought the pull between them, and the way they came together and fit each other perfectly. They fought it, especially Isaac, but there was no denying the tether between them. These two beautiful and broken men had me in a chokehold.
And it wasn’t just them. Everything about this hit. Viridian Falls is filled with dangerous secrets, some of which had my jaw dropping in surprise when they were revealed. And I’m so ready to dive into even more of them.
I got an advanced copy and this is my voluntary review.
I am a sucker for age gap - forbidden romances. And this one was that and more.
A student and a professor… but add mysteries, lies, and a lot of tension to it.
Isaac, the broken professor who’s lost almost everyone he ever cared about. Jackson, realising he’s bi and has a crush on his professor , Isaac.
But there’s more to it then just a crush. These feelings, the tension, and the fact that the Hole town thinks that Isaac killed his former lover, Dylan, who was also a student…
I really loved this story. The mysterie, the twists and turns ( i did not see that coming!)
The dom-sub relationship Isaac and Jackson have together. That was HOT.
Can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
5 stars! I received an arc copy and this is my honest review.
Is it hot in here? It's just me? It won't be after you read Hands Like Ours by River Hale!
Jackson and Isaac's story is cloaked in a mystery from the beginning. There are twists and turns that keep you guessing, while you devour the pages to see if they will ever get on the same page.
This bi-awakening, BDSM, friends to enemies to lovers, taboo student/professor steamy story was impossible to put down! My heart was with Jackson as he navigated his journey and figured out what he wanted and needed. Isaac was shrouded in mystery and turmoil struggling to find his happiness. Little did they realize they were the lock and key to each other's HEA.
There are dark elements to their story so please check your triggers before diving in. Once you do, you won't want to stop.
Amazing! I was hooked from the first chapter. I love when you start a new series and, before you’ve even finished the first book, you’re already impatiently wanting the next one in the series—that’s what this book was for me. The second book can’t come quick enough. That’s how I knew this was a great read. The story is filled with mystery and secrets, making it a page turner. Each chapter pulled me deeper into the plot, and I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next. I loved the backstories of Isaac and Jackson and watching their relationship develop. Their connection formed quickly and felt natural. I became so immersed in the story that I genuinely didn’t want the book to end. I can’t wait to continue the series.
Another great read from the lovely River Hale! I did not like Issac at first. He was kind of an arse; but that's when an author knows they are doin' it right, right? I am glad Issac turned himself around and let himself love and trust again. I loved that Jackson just went right in being Bisexual, no questions and no conflicts. The story was definitely suspenseful and had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. There were a lot of questions you wanted answers too. There is closure, but I still have questions. I can't wait to see the rest of the series. Amazing job as always!
