Death at the Diner: A Seaside Small-Town Cozy Murder Mystery

Rate this book
Murder’s on the menu in Willowford—where the coffee’s hot, the gossip’s hotter, and revenge is served with a smile.

Between burnt toast, gossip refills, and a trainee who can’t tell salt from sugar, waitress Maggie Dawson figured her hardest job was keeping the coffee hot—until her aunt pressed a cool moonstone pendant into her hand and warned, “Keep it close. It knows more than you think.”

When the town’s most disliked businessman drops dead after Pie Night, the police call it sugar shock. The pendant disagrees—and so does the golden-eyed tabby who’s suddenly claimed Maggie as his own. Now she’s knee-deep in secrets, chasing clues as sharp as her wit and twice as dangerous.

Between flustered pie nights and midnight stakeouts, Maggie’s learning the hard way that small towns hide big secrets—a jealous baker, a cornered mechanic, and a moonstone secret in silver she’s only beginning to understand.

Fueled by caffeine, sarcasm, and one psychic cat, Maggie’s about to learn that in Willowford, curiosity can kill more than cats—and secrets never stay buried for long.

The Perfect Getaway:
Sometimes you just need a break from the chaos of reality, and Death at the Diner was exactly that for me. Set in the small town of Willowford, this story follows Maggie Dawson, a diner employee who finds herself trading coffee refills for clues when a murder shakes up the community. It’s cozy, it’s inviting, and it completely stole my heart.
Meet the Real Star: Mr. Crumbs
While I loved following Maggie’s investigation, I have to give a special shoutout to Mr. Crumbs. He is, without a doubt, one of the smartest and most charming cats I’ve ever encountered in a book. His presence added such a unique and "smart" dynamic to the mystery that I couldn't get enough of.
Why You Should Read This:
The Vibe: Imagine the smell of fresh breakfast and coffee mixed with a touch of the supernatural. The paranormal elements were perfectly woven into the plot, making it feel fresh and intriguing.
The Narrative: This was my first time reading Wren Ashwood, but it definitely won’t be my last. The writing is captivating, and the way the mystery unfolds kept me hooked until the very end.
The Ending: I walked away feeling incredibly satisfied. It’s one of those rare stories that leaves you with a warm feeling and a desire to return to that world immediately.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a solid 5-star read that serves as a beautiful escape, this is it. It’s a story about community, mystery, and heart. I’m already looking forward to seeing what else this author has in store for us!

A definite 5* book. The author has managed to write a truly suspenseful story while including detail that makes you feel as if you are right there in the diner. You feel the characters anxiety. There is a cat with suspicious abilities and our heroine's aunt gives her a necklace with a special stone on it that can tell if someone is being truthful or if a situation is dangerous. With the help of both she slowly solves the murder that happened behind the diner. I do not want to give away any details. Read the book, it is definitely worth your time.

The bulk of the mystery takes places within the diner itself with customers and suspects coming and going in a steady stream during the story. It seems to be the first of a new series so we just get to know the main characters briefly. Arching throughout are rather cryptic notes from her Aunt and a sense that the town hasn't finished with Maggie yet!

This is a quick read. I think this is a prequel to a series. Maggie owns a diner where a murder takes place in the alley. Maggie investigates it with the help of her cat , Mr. Crumbs and a mysterious pendant her aunt gave her. I like the characters and the pace of the plot. There is suspense. This is a nice magical mystery.

Maggie Dawson owns a very busy diner where sometimes keeping up with the gossip and coffee is almost too hard
When the towns most disliked business man returns only to drop dead on pie night, it’s up to Maggie and a mysterious golden eyed tabby to solve the mystery of his death.
This is an excellent afternoon read for all mystery lovers.
