Rare Catch:

Rate this book
Is it coercion or is it love? What starts as a solo getaway at a lakeside cabin quickly spirals into the world of a dark, mythical creature. Kurt Russett is a blue-collar man who just wants to catch a few fish and then return to his mundane, lonely life. The last thing he expects to catch is feelings for a male siren lurking in the water. Kurt goes to great lengths to protect the creature. Deprived of social interactions, he rationalizes his infatuation with the siren as love.

This book is intended for readers aged 18+ and includes spicy scenes, gore, death, and potentially disturbing content.

It was a 3 star read until he cheated 😒

Also they don’t communicate with each other and don’t really try to find a way. Idk, that “relationship” just didn’t feel right. 😅 dude is really just out here having sex with a slutty fish.

It was an interesting read though, I read it in one sitting.

I really enjoyed this, but I'm gonna be honest here. This is not a romance (in my opinion) it is a horror novel about a relationship between a man and a siren. I say this because I don't want anyone to read this and automatically 1 star it because it wasn't what they were expecting. Because this book is NOT a 1 star. Anyone who gives it a 1 star clearly didn't give it a fair shot.
It is well-written, engaging, shocking, and intriguing all the way to the end. While I couldn't really get a grip on the romance between Kurt and the siren, thats because the romance is not the focus. The plot is. The book centers around their "romance" but tbh, I never found it very romantic. Its the events that happen that make the story. And as soon as I accepted that, I was able to appreciate how great this book is.

There were many times where my jaw dropped reading this. Every few chapters you'll get that one scene you didn't see coming. This happened like 6 times. And its not a long book. Lots of memorable moments here. Its bloody, graphic, gruesome, and at times unforgiving. One scene involving our MMCs mother will live in my head for a while. And thats all ill say about that. As soon as the book starts, Kurt's voice is very distinct and gripping. The whole cozy vibe you get from the book keeps it easy to read, and even more stunning when some crazy stuff happens, and it happens often. You'll see it with the first half especially. The mystery element had me by the neck, and I couldn't stop reading. The reveal itself is satisfying and happens much early on than I expected. This book is very well-paced. And the "courting" element between the siren and Kurt, was equally cute and unsettling. As it should be (it is a mythical water creature after all)
There is smutty stuff in here, but they occur so fast that you don't really get a satisfying connection between the siren and Kurt. The siren can't speak so inherently that makes it harder to portray a romance. But I never got a true bonding moment between the two. It doesn't help that Kurt constantly insists that he is "straight" and thinks that because the siren is "pretty" despite being male, somehow that makes it less gay? He even comments how much more turned on he would be if he had seen a female siren instead.
...you see what I mean when I say this isn't romantic?
I just wish we could have slowed things down a bit and gotten to know "Nessie" (the siren) more before all the other story beats. I wanted to root for these two. In the end though, I only ended up rooting for the plot. To see what would happen next. Not for the "romance".

However, if you're still interested, please give it a shot. This book is a wild ride I will never forget and I fully recommend it.

I don't know what to say...

I DNFd the book at 40% because, and It seems to me, that this book is just some weird type of monster horror/uncanny valley with a premise of dark romance... I don't get the motive or reason behind the Main Characters interest in the merman. And ... Lowkey... The merman SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME! Introducing a mute character by saying they leave severed heads as some type of gift... Gives me the heebie jeebies. And then you tell me this random neighbor gathers up the MCs ... semen... and uses it as BAIT for the merman AND CAPTURES HIM?? AND THEN THE MERMAN KILLS THE NEIGHBOR TOO??? COUNT ME OUTTT!!!

Maybe I'll pick up the book again... But for now... Nope. Not my cup of tea.
