He’s younger.
Richer. Hot AF.
And about to learn how to beg.

When Xander Stone proposed a fake marriage to save my failing business, I wanted to refuse.
I should have.

He’s younger.
Filthy rich.
Entitled.

Trouble in every conceivable way, but desperation won, and I took his deal.

It’s supposed to be simple. A business transaction. A marriage on paper only.

The problem is the raw attraction. The burning heat. The all-consuming pull that makes nothing about him feel fake.

Xander Stone is good. Too good. He makes me feel seen. Like I matter.
He teaches me to respect myself—but his love language is control disguised as devotion.

And the real danger isn’t falling for my fake husband. It’s realizing that from the very beginning,
Xander never intended to keep our deal.

He intended to keep me.

Even if I’m the one who tries to walk away.

A TAINTED PROPOSAL is a spicy standalone billionaire romance featuring a fake marriage, age gap, forced proximity, sharp banter, a possessive hero who falls first, “my wife,” and a guaranteed HEA.

Cora and Xander’s story was a really good read. The banter with these two was at an all time high and I’m here for it!

🩶Reverse age gap
🩶Billionaire romance
🩶Fake marriage
🩶He falls first
🩶”My wife”

Xander is the typical billionaire playboy. He works hard and plays harder. And when Cora is who he has his sights on, he quickly realizes that she’s different than the rest. And he is going to do everything possible to capture her interest.

Cora is a great character whose life just keeps getting more and more hits. Xander comes in like a knight in shining armor and saves the day. But is all what it seems?

The banter was top notch, and the spice was SPICY! I loved the reverse age gap dynamic that these two had.

Oh my, this one hit me hard, right in the feels!

I'm still fairly new to Maxine Henri, but A Tainted Proposal is stunningly well written... it is an excellent read, filled with resistance, capitulation, infatuation, betrayal and grovelling, and ultimately, one of the best HEAs I've read! I got to read book three, A Convenient Secret (of the Merged series) as an ARC, and now book four too.

The book starts off like most romances, fun, relatively light, with the certainty that these two belong together. But it's not predictable at all. It's a beautiful book filled with longing and regret. The grief is palpable and the changes that both Xander and Coraline experience is both heartbreaking and redemptive, but ultimately brings them together as two whole people who are so crazy in love, it's worth every emotion. This is an age gap romance, but reverse and reminds me of the book The Idea of You, but with an HEA (like the movie, thank goodness).

Oh my goodness, so good! I felt everything. I love Xander's lighthearted boyness, but when he loves, he loves fully. And Coraline, who trusts no one, is so afraid to love, but she does, and boy howdy, do they love each other!

The trouble with ARC reading is I don't want to spoil it for you, but I hope you'll trust me when I say that this is worth a read and I hope you get as much from it as I did. Do not pass go... head straight to the Kindle Store and pre-order! I did too, because this one I will read again and again.

A Tainted Proposal by Maxine Henri
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Marriage of convenience, obsessed billionaire romances will always get me, and this one was so addictive.

Xander and Cora’s chemistry is off the charts—full of yearning, tension, and drama. They challenge and compliment each other in unexpected ways, making their relationship impossible to look away from.

Cora is strong, resilient, and reliable, while Xander is young, rich, possessive, and ridiculously charming. Watching the “fake” start to feel real was everything.

And Xander… whew. He’s young, possessive, charming, and completely undone by her in the best way. The way he yearns? The way he claims? The way the lines blur between pretend and real? Obsessed.

The slow-burn tension builds so perfectly, the drama keeps you turning pages, and yes… the spice hits just right 🌶️

If you love a romance packed with emotional intensity, fake vows turning into real feelings, then A Tainted Proposal is a must read!

✨ ARC Review: A Tainted Proposal
Author: Maxine Henri
Release Date: Today, February 6, 2026

A Tainted Proposal delivers on every promise a spicy billionaire romance should make, tension, drama, banter, and a hero who would absolutely burn the world down for the woman he wants.

From the moment Cora and Xander agree to their fake marriage deal, the story had me hooked. The emotional tension and chemistry just keep building, and things start feeling way too real way too fast in the best way.

Cora is incredibly strong and relatable, carrying the kind of emotional weight that makes you root for her from page one. She’s been through a lot, and you feel it but her resilience is inspiring, and her growth by the end is one of the highlights of the book.

Xander, younger yet commanding in every scene, balances charm with a possessive devotion that’s intense in all the right ways. Watching him fall (hard and fast) is addictive.

Their dynamic is a true slow burn, full of sharp banter and charged moments that kept me flipping pages. There are a few twists and turns along the way that added depth and kept my interest, along with touches of sadness that grounded the romance emotionally. Both characters learn different lessons they desperately needed, and the way they bring out new parts of each other made their connection feel earned.

There were a few moments that felt a bit repetitive, but it didn’t take away from the overall experience. The tension, the groveling, the emotional chase—everything worked together to create an engaging, drama filled romance that was easy to devour.

If you love fake marriages, angsty longing, billionaire energy, and a hero obsessed from the start, this one will definitely scratch that itch.

Tropes:
• Fake marriage
• Reverse age gap
• Billionaire romance
• Forced proximity
• Hero falls first (and obsessively)
• Slow burn with spice
• Guaranteed HEA

I'm giving this a 3.5 ⭐️! I love the concept for A Tainted Proposal! Reverse age gap is one of those things that can be hit or miss for me and I feel like the dynamic is done really well here.

Cora is a 40 year old woman running her father's small bistro. She has her own story with devastating consequences and keeps herself extremely closed off. Her character takes time to grow, and she tends to hold herself back due to this sense of duty to her family.

And Xander, the 30 year old billionaire running his co owned business Merged. He is obsessed with Cora from the moment he meets her and I will give him his dedication to trying to get her attention. He's unapologetically himself and goes for what he wants without reprieve.

I really wanted more of this story to feel fleshed out. There were instances plot wise that felt unfinished and rushed for me. I found myself asking, "wait, but what happened in the aftermath of x, y, and z?" For me, I had a hard time finding connection to the story and characters because of this.

I do however, think the premise of this story has great bones and has a lot to be loved! The banter between these two characters is so fun, their character growth is wonderful individually and together, and the side characters bring a lot of valuable input to their story!

If you're looking for a billionaire romance with an obsessed MMC, independent FMC, and slow burn with tension, then this is the perfect read for you!

This is an ARC review I am leaving voluntarily and all thoughts are my own.

DNF at 30% (ARC)

Thank you to Maxine Henri for the opportunity to read and review an advanced copy of this book.

I made the decision to DNF at 30%. For me, the pacing felt repetitive, with extended back-and-forth between the characters that didn’t move the plot forward in a meaningful way. I found myself waiting for the story to fully develop, but it never quite gained momentum.

There is potential in the premise, and I can see how the core concept could work well with further development and tightening of the narrative. Unfortunately, it just didn’t hold my attention long enough to continue.

As always, this is simply my personal reading experience. Other readers may connect with it differently.

Okay so I love how this book starts in the middle of Lily's story after the gala, wish I love so much because you're seeing what's happening in two books and one but from different point of views kind of. Mind you don't hear too much of Lily, but you hear of the aftermath of what happens. But boy did I love this one just as much as the rest. Ugh Cora and Xander story was just so different, because Cora was the woman to be! This story has so much heartbreak, depressing moments, and pure happiness. You learn so much about Cora and her backstory and then Xander and his. But the betrayal is so bad and sad in this story. I was literally shocked when I read it. But it fits so perfectly and makes you understand and see everything. After all four books I needed this one. Loved this series so much!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ !!

A swoony, banter-packed, drama-layered addition to the Merged Series by Maxine Henri. I couldn’t put this book down — the emotions, past heartbreaks, and the chase for love kept me turning page after page.

Cora and Xander run in the same friend group but live in totally different worlds. Xander is a billionaire with a playboy image, entitled, and noncommittal, while Cora is sassy, independent, risk-adverse, and is barely holding it together trying to save her dad’s struggling bistro. What happens when a fake marriage helps both of their problems, but it starts to feel anything but fake? We get a front row seat to the slow-burn chemistry that jumps off the page. Maxine Henri fills the pages with witty banter, surprise turns, emotional growth, and reminds us that saying sorry is not a weakness. Will Cora and Xander's love survive secrets, lies, and betrayal? Read to find out! 📖

BLURB: When Xander Stone proposed to marry me and save my business, I wanted to refuse. I should have.

He’s younger. Filthy rich. Entitled. Trouble in every single way… but desperation won and I took his deal. It’s supposed to be a fake marriage. A business transaction. The challenge is the raw attraction, the burning heat, the all-consuming pull.

The man is good. Too good. He makes me feel like I matter. He teaches me to respect myself—but his love language is manipulation. And the biggest problem with our deal is that Xander Stone never intended to keep it. Instead, right from the start, he intended to keep me… even if I’m the one who tries to walk away.

REVIEW: A Tainted Proposal by Maxine Henri is book four in the Merged series and can be read as a standalone. It is a slow burn, billionaire romance with a reverse age gap, fake marriage, "my wife" situationship where he falls first. There is plenty of drama with their attraction, infatuation, disappointments, groveling and finally a hard fought HEA that is top tier.

Xander (30-ish) is the stereotypical billionaire raised with a golden spoon in his mouth, unable to relate to the mundane and very real day-to-day challenges Cora (40 years old) navigates as she tries to save her family's bistro. Xander knows he craves the authenticity and vulnerability that Cora brings to his glamorous life but isn't sure how to pull her in. Cora is a struggling, hardworking, strong-willed FMC who can't seem to catch a break or get ahead, no matter how hard she works. Her dysfunctional, but loving, family is little help. These two have overlapping friend groups but their lives couldn't be any more different. Eventually, Cora is desperate enough to agree to a marriage of convenience with Xander. Queue a myriad of overflowing feelings: mad attraction, slow burn lu$t, palpable grief, heartbreaking changes, redemptive love.

A Tainted Proposal has amazing banter and fabulous sp!cy scenes (once the MCs get over a few bumps in the road.) The medium pacing keeps you engaged and excited to read about what happens next. Each MC has lessons they need to learn as they navigate their situationship.

Overall A Tainted Proposal by Maxine Henri delivers another great read from the Merged series. The arrogant but boyishly charming MMC is swoon worthy, especially when he's trying to care for the stubborn and independent FMC who is not used to asking for or accepting assistance. I found this book easy to devour and will always cheer on a billionaire hero who is obsessed with winning the woman that was made for him. If you love a story full of yearning, drama, tension, and off the charts chemistry, then A Tainted Proposal is for you.

A huge thank you to @ Maxine Henri and @ The Author Agency for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

3.25⭐️

Overall I liked the story. I like the reverse age gap. Cora is a 40 y/o woman working herself to the bone trying to keep her fathers bistro afloat for him, even though he will never be able to run the business himself again. Xander is a 30 y/o playboy who co owns a business with his 3 friends, he was born wealthy, money has never been an issue. He wants Cora, Cora is attracted to him but is reluctant because she doesn’t see how a rich, younger, Devil may care playboy could want more
from her than anything physical. She also has previous baggage and just want to stay in her comfortable misery because it’s safer than the unknown.

That said for me it didn’t hold my attention and at times I found some things hard to follow. I also felt there was a lot going on.

Some of the things that just didn’t click with me:
*Cora is stubborn to a fault. She makes herself miserable and then is upset that she is miserable.
*She is very attracted to Xander but refuses to date him, but allows her friends to set her up on dates with other wealthy men.
*I don’t see what Xander sees in her initially outside her looks to make him obsess over her when she is borderline purposefully dismissive of him.
* at times I had a hard time following the tone of conversations. Like I don’t know if they were supposed to be arguing angrily, or banter. Especially between her and her sister.
*Her sister gets divorced and has children and you basically never hear about the children ever again.
*Cora falsely accuses Xanders dad of something because Xander lead her to believe it but then nothing happens with his family after that. No reaction from them, Xander never mentions it.

What I did like is both MCs have great emotional growth, acknowledging their own faults and taking steps to try and improve themselves either through action or reflection. Xander does a great job and understanding where Cora is coming from and the things that he did wrong by her, but also in moving forward and trying to woo her back and not make the same missteps he did initially. Cora does a lot of self reflection at the previous relationships in her life and to see how it affected her.

The book seemed longer than necessary, but honestly that’s just a writing style that a lot of people enjoy. There’s a lot of description a lot of reflection a lot of internal monologue while they were working through their feelings. And I can understand that a lot of people enjoy that type of writing.

Overall, it’s a good book, good story. The writing is solid, a lot of of side characters with constructive input into the relationship and support of their friends and or relatives. I would recommend this book,

(I received an ARC for this book)

trigger warnings will be at the bottom of this review, to avoid spoilers
loss of a loved one discussed on page, discussions of cheating and separation, manipulation, self doubt

Xander and Cora were meant to be in each other’s orbits. Her friends are in love with his friends, so really they had no choice. Talk about opposites attract! He’s the rich guy that she can’t exactly stand. Mostly because she sees him as the stereotypical billionaire. And to be fair, she’s not wrong. But being in her presence gives him the breath of fresh air he needed, wanted. Unfortunately, old habits die hard. There’s some faking, some white lies, and plenty of unexpected vulnerability. Cora doesn’t want his help, rightfully so. She’s an older, independent woman. Xander tries to help her…by having control. And not in the fun and sexy way. (But…that does happen.) Cora can’t understand why she could ever be by his side. And Xander can’t imagine her not being there. My favorite form of groveling occurs: little meaningful gestures.

My personal harp: I wasn’t a fan of how things played out. I’m a big fan of billionaire romance. I love the guys that throw their money and influence around to get their girl. But I need to feel it. I want to know, without any doubt, that he deserves her in the end. I didn’t feel that way here. There was so much damage done. BUT what I will say, is love and trust is messy. And Xander and Cora’s story definitely represented that!

My Favorite Quotes:
• “I have been thinking about all the ways I can make you scream, and believe me, you would enjoy every single one of them and ask for more.”
• “I want your touch, your moans, your cum to coat my face, my hands, my c!ck. Only yours.”
• “You will be the death of me.”
• “You have to stop looking at me like that.” “Like what?” “Like you really want me.” “That’s impossible. I can’t look at you any other way.”
• “It’s you I want.”
• “Fair warning. I’m officially addicted to your p!ssy.”
• “Keep talking yourself down, and I will bend you over my knee right here.”
• “You’re perfect for me.”

Cora is the owner of a small bistro, having taken over for her father after his stroke years ago. While she has watched her friends get married and fall in love (in that order), she has never had the time or energy for a relationship, working herself to exhaustion to try to keep her business afloat. When they are all invited to a gala, she is surprised to receive an invitation from the only single partner at Merged, the much younger playboy who always seems to pay a little too close attention to her. She reluctantly agrees, and finds herself surprised to have an amazing time with him, though when he makes it clear he’d like a hook-up, she turns him down, believing that she is much too old for him, and given the forced proximity through their friend group, doesn’t want to have to deal with the aftermath. Despite her denials, he keeps showing up and finding excuses to spend time together, but deep down she knows they are from two different worlds, and could never work. But then why does he make her feel things she’s never felt before?

Xander is a rich playboy, who moved to the east coast to reinvent himself after he made bad business decisions on the west coast that negatively impacted his family. While he may be the heart of Merged, he has never outgrown his partying ways, but when he spends time with Cora at the gala, he finds himself wondering whether there could be more to life than casual hookups. Although they may come from different worlds, he finds himself captivated by her, and when he realizes that he must have her in his life, he takes some questionable steps to make it happen, including convincing her to marry him.

I received an early copy of this book from The Author Agency and I absolutely loved it! I knew there was something special about Xander from the rest of the series, but he honestly blew me away. It was clear early on that both Cora and Xander had to come to some serious realizations about themselves, but the growth that Xander showed, while helping Cora learn to put herself first was incredible. *Spoiler alert* While this book went beyond the third act breakup, every single page added to the story, and the emotional roller-coaster these two put me on was worth every minute of suffering.

O Xander Stone!! You were sooooo worth the wait! A Tainted Proposal is book 4 in the Merged series by Maxine Henri and it is so so good! If you love a cocky billionaire who falls to his knees in a delicious slow burn, age gap, marriage of convenience, read this book! Xander will absolutely pull you in!

I have been waiting for this one! We have followed Xander and Cora through the first three books, learning slowly a little about them. Xander is the playboy, the gorgeous, rich, cocky, always had everything man. BUT, this man has never truly been in love. Cora, I just loved her, sassy, independent, took on her father’s bistro when he no longer could care for it. She’s simple and down to earth and so loving and deserving of the deepest love. These two couldn't be more opposite! She’s 10 years older and I loved that! And I could totally feel how she would feel, To have this man so into you and the insecurity of but why, I am just simply me? Now Xander must fight for Cora’s trust, proving his love before her fears push her away—fears rooted in their age difference, wealth gap, and completely different upbringings. The banter is hysterical, the differences in their lives at times will kill you with humor, (the man trying to make a bed and the fitted sheets), and the emotions. This book had every emotion. And the chemistry between these two. It burned like pure fire!!!

I truly loved this one, these two showed the real life experience it would feel to be two people totally different but connected so deeply! Maxine…. I love the beautiful, raw vulnerability your books have! I love how these characters pull us in and make us feel like part of the found family. I loved all the text messages and seeing friends from the series. Just love this series! Go read this book and catch up on the whole Merged series now! I am so excited that we get one more!!

A Tainted Proposal is the fourth book in the Merged series, and one of my anticipated reads of the year. Finally, we have Xander and Cora's story in our hands. Are you looking for a reverse age gap, he falls first, fake marriage, entitled billionaire romance? If so, I think A Tainted Proposal is calling your name. Xander and Cora's story is sure to bring all of the chaos and drama with the added bonus of sizzling chemistry.

Although, Cora is independent, she is stubborn as a bull, to the point she makes herself miserable. She places herself in situations and relationships that drain her energy, then wonders why she is so miserable. She sacrifices her happiness for the benefit of others.

Xander on the other hand is privileged, he sees no empire he cannot conquer. When he loves he loves fiercely, to the point he will sacrifice his happiness for theirs. Once he has his eyes set on you he will do anything and everything in his power to dominate you, there is no escaping Xander Stone.

Cora caught the attention of our billionare MMC and she was not prepared for the affect it would have on her. She wants to allow herself a chance to be with Xander, but is afraid to give into what she desires. Xander, on the other hand, sees something he wants and knows how to conquer the challenge, with no thought as to the risks-until it is to late to turn back. The chemistry between these two characters had steam radiating from my kindle. The spice is spicy! Prepare yourself for the possessive hero that is Xander Stone. You've been warned.

Although, a little lengthy, the character growth from the beginning to the end of A Tainted Proposal was evident in the writing. Both of these characters put the effort into working on themselves for the better of their relationship and themselves, even though it was a bumpy ride.

There were a few loose ends from the story that I would have liked to have been cleared up or tied up. As always, it was a pleasure catching up with previous main characters. I am excited to see where we go from here.

I have to say this book had me for on a roller coaster of emotions. At one point I wanted to throw my Kindle because I was so mad. Can't tell you why because that would ruin all of your fun.

My favorite part was when Xander was trying to put on a fitted sheet. I think that alone was worth the read.

What to expect:
💍 Marriage of Convenience
🤎 Entitled, obsessed billionaire
💍 Reversed Age Gap
🤎 Opposites Attract
💍 He falls first
🤎 Grovel
💍 Slowish burn
🤎 She says "F it"
💍 OPP MMC
🤎 He takes care of her when she is sick

Cora: 40yrs old and does not have time for any man. She spends everyday working at her families bistro. She had to take it over after her dad became ill. Well she feels like she owes it to him to keep it afloat. The issue is she is sinking quick with the ship. She just wants to be able to breath.

Xander: 30yrs old. A billionaire playboy that gets everything that he wants without really putting to much effort into it. When he does have to fight for something he fights dirty. Case in point. Cora is not giving him the time of day so he takes things into his own hands.

I loved how Xander was trying to win Cora over even after she turned him down several times. When they were good you could feel the chemistry. The push and pull before things got serious was so good. Then the 3rd act came and I had to pick my jaw off the ground.

At times Cora didn't feel like she was 40. I think the ages would have been better if he was 25 and she was 30/35. I think that part was hard for me to connect with. Everything she complained about were things she could have gotten over. In the end I am not sure if I believe they could have made it long term after everything. That is what I am still struggling with. Maybe she is just stronger than I am.

Thank you Maxine Henri and The Author Agency for the early copy. Above are my honest review.

Tainted Proposal is an emotional roller coaster filled with heart, humour, tension, and just the right amount of spice. I was completely invested from the very first chapter.

Xander is a billionaire businessman who runs his company alongside his friends. He’s a playboy through and through, someone who’s never had a serious relationship and believes money can solve most problems. But beneath that polished, confident exterior is a softer and vulnerable side, one that emerges when it matters most, especially when Cora is sick, and he instinctively steps into a caring, protective role.

Cora enters his life as a date to a gala and happens to be friends with the wives of his business partners. She’s struggling financially and emotionally, having lost her passion for running her father’s bistro after he suffered a stroke and can no longer work. Burnt out, exhausted, and unhappy, Cora feels trapped by responsibility and grief.

Xander falls for Cora almost immediately, but she has walls built sky-high. After losing her fiancé in a tragic motorcycle accident, she hasn’t allowed herself to be vulnerable or trust anyone again. Their push-and-pull dynamic is intense, emotional, and incredibly engaging.

When Xander proposes a fake marriage, offering to help save and revitalise her bistro by bringing in the right people, it sets the stage for a relationship full of chemistry, banter, and undeniable attraction. The fake relationship quickly blurs into something very real as they both fall hard and fast.

But secrets, trust issues, and past wounds threaten to destroy everything they’re building. Watching Cora struggle with trust and Xander fight for something he’s never wanted before added so much depth to the story.

The chemistry is electric, the banter is chef’s kiss, and the emotional layers make this far more than just a romance. Tainted Proposal is heartfelt, engaging, and completely addictive.

This is Cora and Xander Stone's book which starts of with Xander being attracted to Cora who is 10years older. He proposes a marriage of convenience where she gets financial security but more than that he gets to appease his dad, what she doesn't know is that, while the deal promises a lot on surface level it also hides manipulation, secrets and emotional landmines beneath. As the relationship develops, attraction clashes with mistrust, and the plot leans heavily on power imbalance, unspoken trauma, and the slow unraveling of motives on both sides. The narrative moves quickly, keeping the focus on emotional stakes rather than elaborate world-building.

The book has its strengths like even from the start just by the writing you can say that Xander was more than attracted to Cora but it falls flat once they get married- the marriage is fast, things begin getting repetitive until Cora finds the truth behind the reason for marriage and feels betrayed. Things I personally dint like were that during the conflict period they actually divorce which again felt rushed and when they get back together they dont actually have everyone coming together like a meeting with their friends and family- so everything felt a bit incomplete in the end.

Overall the book was still enjoyable and good for binge reading and ofcourse who can forget the two cats.

Tropes- Marriage of Convenience
Billionaire romance
Reverse age-gap

EXCERPTS FROM THE BOOK

"Is that honey on your shirt?” “It resisted.” She takes a careful sip. Pauses. Blinks again. “You made mint. With oat milk.” “I made a choice.” I plant myself at the edge of her bed. “And I stand by it.”
“You’re lucky I don’t have the strength to sass you properly.” “You say that, but I can still feel the judgment radiating off your pores.”
~Chapter 16, Cora and Xander

“Ring or no ring. Wedding or no wedding. I’m yours forever, Xander.” He smiles at me. “Forever.”
~Epilogue, Cora and Xander

Hands down Maxine Henri’s best ever! This is a romance that sweeps you right off your feet, hits you with an obsessed man you absolutely love who will do ANYTHING to get the girl, and then sends you reeling when the fairytale that is all too real comes crashing down like a house of cards, and it is so ridiculously fantastic.
Xander is the ultimate obsessed playboy turned one woman man who gets hit like a ton of bricks with his NEED to be with and have Cora, it’s a hunger, it’s the driving force behind every move he makes for months, and honestly every ounce of manipulation is hot, and thoughtful, and basically every single last one of Cora’s dreams being handed to her on a silver platter, like actually. He sees that she needs help, he finds a way to make it happen, he sees she’s stressed, he goes out of his way to lessen her load, he finds an old list of wishes and starts working on every last one.
It’s at this point that the simp in me says just take it, let him love you, because he one hundred percent loves Cora, and go live your happily ever after, but manipulation is a delicate balance, the truth always has a way of coming out, and even the best things can feel ugly when you start to question every interaction and all the choices you’ve made. For Cora it’s the lies but not really, it’s that after the manipulation, when everything jumped from fake to real, Xander never chose to tell her that makes her question what they have and it just resonates with you. It’s not if they love it’s what’s left of that love when there was never any trust. I love that Cora stands up for herself and how she feels, I love that Xander hears her and gives her what she wants but still watches, always ready to be there if she needs anything at all, and I love how well written and brilliant this entire story is. A seriously fabulous read that I highly recommend adding to your tbr.

ARC Review•

“Just because I can have something doesn’t mean I want it”

When the sexy billionaire who doesn’t know the word “no” meets the feisty, fiery, red headed Coraline Winslow.

Xander has never met a woman who didn’t want him or turned him down until he met Coraline, everyone refers to her as Cora except Xander uses her legal name. Xander and Cora are introduced through mutual friends and Xander invites Cora as his plus one to a work event.

Xander has an attraction to Cora and thinks it’s just like every other women and just needs to get her in his bed once to get it out of his system, however after their date he can’t stop thinking about her even without getting her into his bed.

With Xander being entitled, filthy rich and good looking he is not use to being rejected. He is set to have Coraline who is 10 years older fall for him. He is willing to do whatever it takes, even convincing her to an arranged marriage to help her save her failing restaurant business.

“And I realize one important thing: I never had a chance. Escaping Xander Stone was never on the table. Surviving him … I can only hope that chance is still mine”.

This is a slow burn but well worth it, Cora and Xander hit a few bumps along the road causing a lot of sadness and mistrust but it’s definitely an HEA. Not only does Xander teach Cora to have some confidence in herself but Xander learns from Cora that sometimes you need to learn that not everything can be bought and you need to respect boundaries.

Thank you @maxinehenriromance for allowing me the opportunity to read this beautiful story. It was my first book I read of yours but won’t be my last! I love an arranged marriage trope.

I inhaled this book. Devoured it. Then sat there blinking at the wall like I’d just signed a fake marriage contract of my own and caught feelings about it.

The Tainted Proposal is everything I want when I crack open a billionaire romance. Sharp. Hot. Messy in the best way. Xander Stone walked in younger, richer, arrogant as hell, and somehow still managed to fall first and fall hard. Fake marriage tropes usually promise chaos, but this one delivers a full-blown emotional wildfire.

The tension? Constant. The attraction? Loud. The kind that crackles on the page and makes you mutter “this is not fake” every five minutes. The banter is razor sharp, the forced proximity is deliciously cruel, and the way Xander slides into “my wife” territory had me grinning like a fool. Possessive but purposeful. Controlled but undone. Devotion wrapped in dominance with just enough edge to make it dangerous.

What really got me though was how seen the heroine becomes. Not just wanted. Not just claimed. Actually valued. The emotional arc sneaks up on you while you’re distracted by the spice, and suddenly you’re in deep, rooting hard, and lowkey terrified someone’s going to walk away and break your heart.

And that twist? The realization that the deal was never real to him? That he always intended to keep her? Yeah. That hit. Hard.

This book is sexy, emotionally charged, and unapologetically indulgent. Fake marriage. Age gap. Billionaire obsession. A hero who knows exactly what he wants and refuses to let go. I loved every tainted, tempting, addictive page. Would absolutely reread. Would absolutely recommend. 💍🔥

When I received the offer to read this ARC through The Author Agency, I was really excited, because I’d been wanting to read a reverse age-gap book for a long time, one where the FMC is older. And let me tell you… I loved every single bit of this book. Not just because of the age gap, but because of the whole story, which I absolutely devoured. Thank you for sending such great opportunities my way!

The story itself is pretty simple: Xander, the rich playboy who has every woman at his feet, meets Cora, the owner of a small café that she took over when her father could no longer run it.

Xander’s life is easy, while Cora’s is chaotic, full of things to do, responsibilities to handle, and no time for herself or for what she truly enjoys.

Xander, without really understanding why, invites Cora to one gala… then another… and then to other events, always with the idea that it would just be casual, just something temporary until he got bored. But Cora doesn’t believe this relationship has a future and doesn’t do casual. Being older and carrying much heavier responsibilities, she can’t see a future for them and doesn’t want to complicate their shared friendships.

As time goes by, the playboy starts to realize that his life makes a lot more sense with Cora in it — and he begins to grow up. From early on, it was clear that both of them had a long journey ahead, to find themselves and each other, but the growth Xander shows, while helping Cora learn to put herself first, was simply amazing.

The ending is wonderful and makes all the suffering along the way totally worth it! Don’t go into this expecting just a sweet billionaire age-gap romance, even though it is that too, but something that really makes you feel. And that’s always a beautiful thing.

Thank you to the author and to The Author Agency for this ARC, I truly loved it. 💖✨

A Tainted Proposal wrecked me in the best possible way.
Maxine Henri gave us a fake marriage romance that is intense, addictive, and unapologetically possessive—and I devoured every second of it.
Xander Stone is younger, obscenely rich, arrogant in that effortless billionaire way… and completely undone by his wife. From the moment he proposes the deal, you can feel that this man is not playing fair. He falls first, falls hard, and never once pretends he’s willing to lose Cora. The “my wife” energy? Absolutely feral. 🥵
Cora is strong, capable, and vulnerable in a way that felt deeply real. Watching her navigate desperation, pride, and self-worth while being pulled into Xander’s orbit was emotionally satisfying and beautifully written. He sees her. He values her. He pushes her to respect herself—even when his devotion borders on obsession.
The chemistry between them is off-the-charts scorching. Forced proximity, sharp banter, raw attraction, and that constant sense that the deal was never just business made this impossible to put down. Every interaction crackles with tension, and the power dynamics are deliciously complicated.
What I loved most? The slow realization that the real danger isn’t falling for her fake husband—it’s discovering he never intended to let her go. Xander didn’t want a contract.
He wanted her.
This book delivered: ✨ Fake marriage done right
✨ Age gap tension
✨ Possessive hero who falls first
✨ Emotional depth + spice
✨ “Touch her and die” devotion
Cora and Xander are everything. If you love billionaire romances with control, devotion, heat, and heart, A Tainted Proposal is a must-read. Guaranteed HEA, guaranteed obsession. 💍🔥📚

How on earth does this series just consistently get better with each book? Maxine has written yet another hooking story to add to the collection and this one was something I can only describe as tense and sensual.

We have a 10-year reverse age gap in this book, a trope that I love so much regardless of what way it is. But the whole idea of an older woman locking down a complete playboy is just perfection. Cora was the perfect FMC for Zander one of the business partners in Merged. Zander gets practically infatuated with the idea of Cora being his but she will not give him any time whatsoever, this is due to her past mostly which is ever so complicated and just gets more complicated as the book goes on.

Zander ends up coming up with quite the wicked plan and suggests a fake marriage between them after Cora's father's bistro loses its one employee and its rent doubles overnight and well Zander needs to be married to secure a seat on another business that Merged wants to work with.

Obviously, as the story goes, a fake marriage turns into a real marriage and then everything gets exposed. But it gets messy in this book and I could not put it down, I was eating up the messiness that Zander caused and it did take me a little while to forgive Zander myself but he made it worth it.

Overall this book can be read as a standalone but to get to know your characters better you do see them in the other books within this series. I highly recommend this and all of Maxine's books as you will always be highly satisfied with what is in them!

This book was so good from beginning to end, the slow burn romance, the pinning, the banter and the explosive chemistry between Xander and Cora was delivered masterfully.

Xander and Cora live in two different worlds. Xander is a billionaire with a playboy reputation and Cora is trying to keep her father's coffee shop in business which leaves her with zero time for herself but after a gala invitation from Xander everything changes for both of them.

From the moment Xander lands his eyes on Cora he knows she is a woman he can't walk away from, not only because she is the only woman that keeps him at arms length and keeps saying no to his advances but because he knows that there is something real about how he feels about her.

Cora doesn't really understand why Xander is so interested in her. He is younger, successful and handsome, he literally can have any woman he wants but apparently he wants her and Cora can't deny the feelings Xander evokes in her. This man keeps showing up at her doorstep, starts caring and protecting her and showing her of a life she never thought possible but her trust issues and insecurities are always there.

Xander and Cora's relationship is a bumpy one, and they have many ups and downs but also they become stronger and grow so much in their relationship.

-Reverse Age Gap
-Marriage of convenience
-Billionaire Romance
-He falls first
-Slow burn
-Forced proximity

It was exactly that 'A Tainted Proposal' and we know nothing good can come from that or could it?
Xander is one of the main founder of Merged and he is also the life of the party, the not serious one and not ready to settle.
Cora is 10 years older than Xander, she is independent to a fault and is always trying to help. She is also so strong despite her life and her dad's Bistro is falling apart.
They both have mutual friends and that's where he met her. Now Xander can't forget her and wants to be in her orbit whenever he can. She refuses him with her long list of excuses but he never backs down from a challenge. What started as a challenge ended up him falling harder than expected. Now he needs to win the woman and show her the real him. He is actually a very caring and intelligent man.
He needs a wife to get a deal with his father and she needs help with he bistro.
I loved all the sweet he did for her. He showed his affection through actions and Cora might be losing the battle.
Things are going so well and future is looking perfect, only there is something he is hiding and it can destroy it all.
It has been a while I have come across a 3rd act break up lasting longer than a week. Can they find their way back to each other?
He was just perfect in how he grovels and wins her back, I loved it so much.
This had a lot of emotions, banter, friendship, character growth, heartbreak, love and a lot of delicious spice.

“No buts. I’m yours, if you’ll have me. And you better conquer your fear, because you’re f*cking mine.”

Huge thank you to the author agency for the gifted eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Maxine Henri is a new author to me so I was excited to give this book a try. Cora and Xander were such fun characters to meet. Even though there was an age gap, I found myself cheering for them because they truly seemed like they were each other’s person. They have such different personalities which leads to some really amazing banter that had me smiling and laughing. I love that Maxine Henri was able to create two completely different characters and gave them the proper space to grow both mentally and emotionally. I always love it when characters are able to learn how to deal with learn and how to grow from their experiences and Henri did such a great job at showcasing that.

Cora and Xander both had a lot to learn about themselves and with a fake marriage tying them together, I felt like they really needed each other in order be able to transform into the people they become towards the end of the book. What started out as a fake marriage to benefit the both of them, turned into a slow burn revelation that had you curious to know what would become of our main characters. I also really loved that these characters were mature and not too young which made for a really relatable read that I don’t normally see in other stories. I’m pleasantly surprised with this book and I feel like I would enjoy other books from this author.

I haven't read the other books in this series, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the story.
This is a reverse age gap, fake marriage romance.
Cora is 40 years old and Xander is 30 years old and well they are very different but seem to fit, when Cora gives them a chance.
They meet at a Gala and are from opposite worlds Xander is a wealthy playboy and Cora runs her fathers Bistro.Which she is struggling to keep afloat..
Cora doesn't want anything to do with Xander as she is 10 years older than him,and she doesn't have time for relationships she is too busy with the Bistro.
Xander is a Billionaire and has never had to work hard for anything, except now were he is trying to get Cora's attention..He is besotted with her.
So because she keeps ignoring him he decides to play dirty to catch her eye..this leads to a fake marriage.
Xander falls hard and fast and will do anything to win her heart..I loved him...the way he made Cora know her worth was so special.I also loved the banter between them.
This was a captivating read and Maxine Henri did a really good job with the age gap and made these two characters fit together. The way they seemed to influence eachother to change without knowing they were even doing it..Xander matured..Cora learned to live...and their chemistry was undeniable.
A Tainted Proposal is equal parts emotion, steam and romance..I really enjoyed it.
