More than 700 pages long, but it feels like nothing happens.
Even the inclusion of a seven-year time jump and episodes set in "The Beyond" -- the area surrounding the central valley which is "The Land" of the title -- can't keep my eyes from glazing over as we are fed hints to the larger mythology in dribs and drabs while the characters just sit around dithering. Honestly, the biggest plot development is that two characters learn to read.
The author is so lost in the swamp of a plot she throws in a couple super-short adaptations of Anne of Green Gables and The Wizard of Oz just to spice things up and buy some time.
This volume puts me about halfway through the entire series, and I've yet to find a point to the whole mess.
I'm done.
