I won't rate this book as I don't think that's fair to the author.
I considered not writing anything after finishing Finding Her, but decided that jotting down my thoughts was the right thing to do. It can be awkward sharing one's views when you're an author yourself. As a community, we should be supporting each other. However, that support can take many forms. One thing I don't consider supportive is seeing something that needs fixing and not saying anything about it. The below is said with kindness, even if it might not feel that way.
Firstly, I will say that, despite its issues, I quite enjoyed the story. I thought the premise was interesting and this has the potential to be a good book. Sadly, it was published far too early. The story is in desperate need of significant editing.
A developmental edit is needed to address the plot and pacing. Elements appear very late in the story that could have been woven in much earlier (e.g. dieties). There are also problems with confusing character motivations (laissez-faire parenting) and characters that are only titles, but have not been bestowed with names (mum, dad, friend).
A line edit is needed to address the writing on a more general sense. The prose switches from past tense to present tense in several places for no apparent reason, then switches back after a paragraph or two.
A proofread is needed to address the errors in the text. There is at least one error per page, with some sentences containing multiple errors. Some sentences do not start with a capital letter or end with a full stop, a host of other punctuation marks are missing. I is often written as i. This makes the book feel very amaturish, which is surely not the look the author is going for.
A professional cover design is needed because the current cover looks like it was created in MS Paint. A good cover will help sell this book. This is story which includes mutiple pretty girls - get them on the cover! The Monogatari series by Nisioisin is a great example of this.
But saying all that, there is something here. This reads more like a Japanese light novel (though is much longer than a light novel) and would work really well with some manga-style illustrations of the characters between the chapters. With some work, this could be a good book, and one that teens would enjoy - I may even ramp up the more sexual elements here as I suspect that would appeal.
If I were the author, I would unpublish this and spend 2026 whipping it into shape. This will cost money - publishing books should cost money - but it will be worth it.
