One Snowy Swedish Christmas: A Spicy Holiday Novella

Rate this book
My mother remarried last year, and now I have been invited to spend Christmas with her at her new house in a small town in Sweden. Unfortunately, I cannot believe her marriage is going to last. They got married after only a few months together, and with my mom’s track record, this is all going to blow up in her face at any moment. And since she won’t come to her senses on her own, I guess it’s up to me to go get her back.

The only problem is that her new husband's son, Erik, my now step-brother, is trying to ruin everything. He’s tall and handsome and always in the way. Last time I tried to speak to Mom, right before her wedding, he showed up and interrupted my plans. But this time, that won’t happen. This time, I will make sure to arrive several days before Christmas and hopefully be on a plane back to L.A. with Mom before the holiday is even over. This time, Erik won’t get to ruin things.

Except… When I arrive, he’s already there.

This is a spicy Christmas novella involving a small town, several cups of hot chocolate, lots of snow and a star-crossed romance. If you like tall Swedish men, this book is for you!

So maybe it's because I'm older (in my 40's) but I felt that the whole beginning of the book was Casey being selfish she shouldn't be jet setting all over the place to try to break up her mom's relationship with this new man when it's for once not a toxic relationship like the ones in the past... let your mom be happy girl say congratulations and enjoy the holidays! I get that she had a bad past history with bad relationships and so did her mom but it's really not her place to keep throwing that in her mom's face especially in the holidays.

There is the taboo/forbidden part of this story where Casey and Erik are drawn to each other and begin quickly developing feelings but Casey at that point doesn't want to tell her mom and ruin what she has going on with her new happy life, so at that point there is growth for Casey and I liked that eventually she did stop trying to actively talk to her mom about breaking up with her husband.

I think the relationship could have felt a bit more natural if the book was longer (I know it's a novella so everything has to happen in a shorter time frame but the lead FMC and MMC just met then everything is happening quicker than her mom and her new husbands whirlwind romance which Casey felt was happening too quick and I really didn't see how they could be anything more than physically attracted to one another in the few days they spent with each other with what was on the pages and so the ending felt really rushed it did set up for a sequel so I might give that a try if it comes out hopefully it will be a a full length novel.

Since this is a novella, it's a quick, easy Christmas read. Overall, the story is fairly good. I always have problems with novellas. I want a more developed storyline, but that's pretty challenging to achieve in a quick read.

I was not a fan of the FMC, Casey. She was way too old to be acting like a spoiled brat. She came across as selfish and a little unhinged. I don't know too many grown adult children who would actively fly across the world to break up their mother's marriage at Christmas.

The romance part of the story is not bad. It's a little taboo. Casey and her stepbrother start to have feelings for each other. Casey does try to avoid them because of the fact that their parents are married. It is a little awkward, but they're not related, so it is plausible. Casey doesn't want to get involved with her stepbrother at first. She doesn't want to destroy the happiness her mother has found, which Casey has finally admitted to. We see Casey mature somewhat during the Christmas visit to Sweden.

Since this is a novella, everything is fast-paced. The storyline moves quickly. I do feel like the relationship between Casey and her stepbrother moved a little too fast. They've met once before and suddenly fall madly in love in a few days. Her actions go against everything she believed with her mom and her new husband. She was so upset that her mom married a man after knowing him for a few months. Now, she's falling in love with a man in a few days. The plots contradict themselves. Yes, people can change, but not that quickly.

The story itself is not bad. It has some great potential. I would have loved to see more growth and understanding between Casey and her mom. The quick turnaround didn't flow that well for me. The love story between Casey and her stepbrother felt rushed and not authentic. If the story could have been longer and developed more, I feel it would have been better. I would have loved more details and descriptions of Sweden, so that as the reader, I could have felt like I was there.

Overall, the story was fairly good. It just wasn't for me. If you're younger and looking for a quick Christmas read, I'm sure you'd enjoy it.

I hated the FMC. She was so cynical and negative. What kind of person repeatedly tells their mother to leave their new husband? I get the mom had a bad history with relationships but her mom told her numerous times she was happy but Casey kept telling her mother she didn’t know her own husband.

How can she tell her mom she needs to get divorced and doesn’t know her husband and the next moment look at her step brother and think she’d have children with him.

So the story wasn't bad. Sorry to start with that. But the main character, Casey (I didn't realize that was her name until 40% in), really had a pretty bad case of PTSD that was influencing all of her decisions and reasoning. That kind of brought me down and took the enjoyment out of it. It was just kind of okay for me.

I thought that this novella started a little slow. But it eventually picked up and gave me the spicy Christmas romance. However though, what I wasn’t expecting, was the forbidden romance between Erik and Casey. I did love the way that they finally came together in the end. It was a quick spicy Christmas read.

This was a cute short story, but felt kind of rushed. I would have love more details about what their exes did.

But I love how the FMC learned to let go of the mistrust and live.

I received an ARC for my honest review via BookSirens.

This was an adorable holiday story. It featured a sweet romance between Erik and Casey. The only thing that bothered me was the FMC’s constant negativity. I hadn't read anything by this author before, but I'm open to exploring more of her work.
