Permanence: Become the Person You Want to Be—and Stay That Way

Rate this book
Answer six questions for two minutes per day and you can change almost anything.

If you’ve ever met a goal and thought, Now what?—you’re not alone. Permanence is your tool for lasting success—not the kind that’s here one day and gone the next, but the kind that sticks with you. Small, consistent steps—six questions daily—will keep you focused, on track, and synced with what you care about most.

The real challenge isn’t just getting there. It’s staying there. In this book, you’ll learn the Daily Question Process, how to use feedforward instead of feedback, and how to build systems of accountability that yield results. You’ll stop thinking about quick wins and start improving in a sustained way—driven by who you want to be, not what others are doing.

Whether you’re leading a team or leading yourself, Permanence helps you track what matters, eliminate distractions, and create permanent habits that get you where you want to be—not just once, but for the long haul.

Success isn’t a one-time achievement. It’s about showing up for yourself, every day. This book gets you there, and keeps you there.

The premise of this book is simple: ask yourself 6 questions every day to become the person you want to be (and stay that way).

The book provides many success stories of people who have adopted the 6-question method. The book states that this method can work for anyone, yet most of the examples provided are from people in America's corporate world (CEOs, business leaders, etc.). I wish they had provided a larger sample from a range of backgrounds, cultures, and values.

I was left wanting more information on how to determine a person's core values. I suppose that was outside the book's scope, though it seems like the most crucial step in the process. As a stand-alone book, a person wouldn't be able to design their 6 questions without doing a lot of pre-value work beforehand.

If you are looking for a book to sell you on the 6-question methodology, "Permanence" can provide that. It can also offer the motivation and inspiration for your path forward.

If you are looking for a book on how to design your life around your values, I wouldn't start here. There is not enough depth or guidance offered.

I couldn't work out if I thought this was really good or just okay (relative to other standout non-fiction titles)...

The 6 questions form the spine of the book and you're encouraged to use them as a springboard for your own exploration, which I really liked.

It then jumps around quite a bit, delving into a multitude of different areas of personal development - from accountability to daily habits to mastery. The same with the examples, ranging from Tim Ferriss to Robert Cialdini to Borderick and Goldsmith's own experiences/other books. I guess I enjoyed the slightly less linear nature of it. It maybe lacked a unifying message though which would aid with application.

Other strengths were the small infographics to summarise each chapter which worked very well on ebook (an art in itself). I also liked learning about new ideas such as Feedforward, the quantified self movement and the Wheel of Change Model. I'll need to take another look at the latter in particular.

Overall, you can get through this book quite quickly and take some good ideas/inspiration on board.

Note - I received an advanced reader copy of the ebook through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Fantastic book. Love the insights, examples and have started using the Daily Questions.
This a guide to life especially in today’s fast paced life and I am definitely going to have my teen read the section on Comparison Culture and Success Culture. Highly recommend!
