The older I get, the more I realize I’m often my own worst critic. Not my boss. Not strangers on the internet. Me.

The Christian Self-Compassion Workbook for Women by Kim Fredrickson landed in my hands at a time when I probably needed the reminder more than I wanted to admit.

Chosen Books, thank you for the gifted copy. My review reflects my honest opinion.

I’ll be honest, when I first saw the title, I wasn’t sure how I felt about the phrase “self-compassion.” Sometimes books on that topic can drift into feel-good advice that sounds nice but doesn’t really stick. Thankfully, that wasn’t my experience here.

What I found instead was a workbook that gently asks hard questions. Not the kind that leave you feeling guilty, but the kind that make you stop and think, “Why am I so much kinder to everyone else than I am to myself?”

Kim Fredrickson draws from her background as a counselor, but she never comes across as clinical or distant. It felt more like sitting down with someone who has walked through some difficult things and learned a few lessons along the way. Throughout the book she shares stories, practical exercises, and reflection prompts that encourage readers to look at the patterns behind their negative self-talk.

One thing that really stood out to me was how often women carry around impossible expectations. We tell ourselves we should be doing more, achieving more, giving more, fixing more. Then when we fall short of those expectations, we beat ourselves up for it. This workbook spends a lot of time unpacking that cycle.

“There’s no better time than right now to start changing your relationships, your outlook on life, and your view of yourself in the process.”

I found myself highlighting quite a bit and pausing often to think through the questions. A few sections hit close to home, especially those dealing with shame, self-worth, and the stories we tell ourselves when we think we’re not enough.

Now, if you’re looking for a deep Bible study, this isn’t really that. The focus is more on personal growth through a Christian perspective than on detailed Scripture study. For me, it worked well as a workbook and reflection tool.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you’re exhausted from carrying around unrealistic expectations or constantly feeling like you don’t measure up, this might be worth picking up.

What’s harder for you—showing grace to other people or showing it to yourself?

I wanted to love this workbook. The subject matters to me because I do want to learn how not to be so hard on myself. I wanted help understanding how to respond to failure, weakness, shame, and discouragement in a way that is faithful to Scripture and rooted in the grace of Christ.

There were portions I appreciated. The author recognizes human limitations, acknowledges suffering, encourages rejecting harsh self-condemnation, and reminds readers that God gives gifts and uses His people to bless others. The workbook also includes practical exercises and compassionate language for those who struggle with negative self-talk.

However, I found myself deeply disappointed by the overall emphasis. The book is more focused on self-esteem and self-compassion than on Christ-centered grace. I kept longing for more Scripture, more gospel clarity, and more teaching on receiving the grace Jesus gives rather than learning how to give grace to myself.

That distinction matters to me.

I do not want to become my own comforter, my own best friend, or my own source of compassion. I want to be taught how to rest in the compassion of the Father, the finished work of Jesus, and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. I wanted this subject handled in a way that directed my heart, soul, and mind upward to Christ. Instead, I often felt directed inward toward myself.

I appreciate the author's desire to help hurting women, and I believe some readers may find helpful encouragement here. For me, though, this workbook was not what my heart was yearning for with this topic.

I received a paperback copy of this book from the publisher. I am not required to write a positive review nor paid to do so. This is my honest and unbiased review. My thoughts and opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing and the content, ensuring transparency and reliability.

Do you struggle with your inner critic? Or feel like you think negative thoughts about yourself? The Christian Self-Compassion Workbook for Women may be just the helpful guide you need to re-think how you talk to yourself and how you think about yourself.

This book is divided into ten chapters along with three appendixes. The book gives food for thought by guiding the reader through information as well stories shared about real life people. This book is aimed at women but there are stories about men in the book too. Outside of the floral cover, I'm not really clear on why the book is just aimed at women. I think the book could be helpful to both genders especially since the examples included in the chapters include both genders. There are questions with plenty of space to write included throughout the workbook.

I have another book about self-compassion from an expert that I also found helpful. However, that book was more general and this one is aimed specifically at Christians. If you want a book that includes faith as part of the workbook, then this is a The Christian Self-Compassion Workbook for Women is a good book to consider. The first appendix lists Bible verses that may be helpful that deal with God's love, care and compassion. Throughout the book, some of the stories deal with people in specifically Christian settings like church or Bible study.

The author of The Christian Self-Compassion Workbook for Women was a licensed marriage and family therapist and a Christian life coach for over 20 years who left her practice for health reasons.

I've read books on self-compassion before, but they weren't geared towards Christians and took a different approach that I didn't like. This book is ideal for the Christian woman looking to receive God's grace, and in turn, have compassion on herself. This can be challenging giving one's upbringing or cultural beliefs, for example. Self-compassion, as the author explains, is caring for oneself in a loving way. It's about taking the negative mindsets, the "I'm not good enough" thoughts, and choosing to replace them with the Truth.

This book is an effective teaching and reflection tool to help guide the reader into having self-compassion. It lays the groundwork for ongoing transformation. I felt there was a good balance of teaching, application, and self-reflection questions. It mirrors how we are to rewire our thoughts and perspectives: gently and over time. Some of the prompts were healing to write out, and the scripts the author included to reframe our thoughts were impactful to read.

I didn't enjoy the amount of personal stories included. While purposeful and encouraging, I don't feel they added to the teaching for me.

While connections to Scripture is a part of this study, it wasn't in-depth. This wasn't a problem, but my preference would be for there to be a bigger focus on Scripture. The references were helpful; to enhance the teaching. I appreciated the appendix that has verses on God's love and compassion for the reader to cling to as they practice self-compassion.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Truthfully, I wasn't quite sure what to expect--- but the title of the book caught my attention, and definitely hit on a topic I've struggled with often.

I love how each chapter covers a topic from both theological and practical viewpoints — I especially enjoyed the examples and stories that helped me apply the truths and concepts presented.

I preferred to sit down and cover a chapter at a time, but the book was written in a way that made it easy to pick up and put down. I felt as if Kim Fredrickson were talking to me as a trusted friend; her words were both encouraging and informative. Each section starts by connecting the topic to Scripture, sharing a story that illustrates the concept, and including a "your turn" section where the reader is invited to apply key takeaways to their lives.

I think this would make a great study for a small group. There are ample follow-up questions for discussion, both personally and publicly. I've always enjoyed books that view topics from a counseling and spiritual perspective -this book does just that!

Okay ladies, I have to share this book with you because it was such a beautiful reminder of something we all need to hear… we are so quick to show grace and kindness to everyone else, but we can be so hard on ourselves.

This book was like sitting down with a wise friend who gently reminds you of your worth and who God says you are. I loved that it wasn’t just “think positive” advice, but actually gave practical tools, reflection questions, and encouragement to work through the things that keep us stuck in self-criticism.

If you’ve ever struggled with negative self-talk, feeling like you’re not enough, or just need a reminder to give yourself the same compassion you give everyone else, I think this is such a wonderful read. Definitely one I’ll be keeping and coming back to.

I received a copy from the publisher. These thoughts are my own. :)

Inside you will find:
🌼 Reflection questions

Very excited to dive deeper and really take my time with this one. As an LPC myself, I love resources for clients that have a Christian emphasis. A resource like this that highlights sled care, compassion and even self love is so needed! Right at the very beginning of the book she takes time to break down what self compassion is and is not. I will be highly recommending this book to clients! I received a copy of this from the publisher with no expectation of a positive review.

This was a good workbook for women to learn to give ourselves some grace and compassion and not be so critical of ourselves.

I like the layout of the workbook, and the stories that are shared to make us feel not as alone. There are also reflection questions which I appreciated.

I wish there was a little more scripture shared! Overall, pretty solid workbook.
