With the first installment of the Amish Widows Club series, Shelly Shepard Gray has reminded me exactly why I used to love Amish fiction so much. This novel is so sweet and homey, like being invited into Leanna's kitchen for kaffi and baked goods (and she'd probably welcome me more eagerly than all her male callers...).

I loved watching Leanna's journey as she tried to step out of her shell and find community--and even love. I did feel like, considering she spent years married to a very emotionally abusive man, she should have been more triggered by little things in conversation and whatnot to better develop her character. But all around, I feel she represented the struggle to forge onward and start anew very well, especially as an Amish woman in a community where most are focused on being a wife and mother... and she was neither.

Evan's family absolutely MADE this book. His boys were all so darling, and it reminded me a lot of my own family, where everyone is in everyone's business. LOL. Jeremy and Russell were my favorites, but it was cute how all four boys (who I should note are indeed full-grown men) were eager to help out with their dad's love life. And Evan, of course, was a very sweet and considerate fellow. What's not to love?

Personally, it makes me a little sad that the widows club kicks out members who remarry. I get it, but it would be so sad to lose a big community like that, and for Leanna, it made it harder for her to decide to take a chance on love, which I don't think was the desired effect. I also felt like the whole baby thing was blown out of proportion. Leanna was very set on marrying someone who wanted to have kids with her, which is fine... but she and her husband had tried for years and been unable to conceive, and she never knew if it was an issue on her end or his. Thus, this desire that was a deal-breaker for her wasn't really grounded in reality, because for all she knew, she wouldn't even be able to have a child. It just felt weird to me.

Overall, this was a lovely work of Amish fiction, and I hope I get the chance to read the rest of the series! It was sweet, had some light faith content, and was so warm and cozy. If you're an Amish fiction fan, you'll love Shelley Shepard Gray's newest release!

Final Thoughts: ​I got The Unexpected Caller on Monday night, and I wasn't able to read it until [today] Wednesday, which was surprising to me since I have been waiting all year to get my hands on this book! But once I started, I absolutely loved it.
​If you loved the Bridgeport Social Club like I did, you will be just as thrilled to see another social club at the heart of this story. The story follows Leanna, a 41-year-old widow who has just endured 19 years of a bad marriage to a domineering man. After his passing, she finds herself playing reluctant hostess, baking weekly desserts and serving men she does not want to entertain. Fed up, she finally decides she has no plans on ever remarrying.
​Right around this time, she receives an invitation to a secret widow's club. She discovers a group of ladies from many different Amish backgrounds who are all widowed, single, and enjoying their best lives. Because the Amish faith wants widows of childbearing age to remarry, they have to keep this amazing spouses club for widows completely on the down-low.
​I won't give away anything else, but the dilemma between choosing this newfound sisterhood and a second chance at love was a welcoming trope I have not seen before. I enjoyed these characters tremendously, as well as their dilemmas. This is probably the most polished book I've read by this author—and I've read most of her catalog—because the plot is incredibly tight, and the writing flows seamlessly without any lulls or simple resolutions. It was like perfection.
​I am totally looking forward to the next book, and I'm even excited for book 3, which won't be out till March.

“Don’t forget that I like two teaspoons of sugar,” he said. “I would never forget that, Zeke.” He needed all the sweetness he could get. Only when she reached the privacy of her kitchen did Leanna press her hands to her eyes. Tears were threatening. She needed to fight them back before Zeke noticed. She’d learned that most of these later-in-life suitors looked for weaknesses. Flaws. They could be used as ammunition to make her feel like she shouldn’t be alone anymore. Or, perhaps, simply to make themselves feel better.

Zeke’s expression tightened. “I don’t believe in women reading. Especially not fiction.” Though everything inside of her encouraged her to look away, she didn’t. Their church district was rather progressive. She’d never heard any of their bishops or deacons over the years tell women not to read whatever they wanted. Looking him directly in the eye, she blurted, “What’s wrong with reading fiction?” “It keeps them away from more important things, don’t you think?” “What things?” Though Zeke was being rude, Leanna was curious. Her house was spotless, the coffee in his cup was fresh, she’d gone to church that morning, and he’d eaten two cookies that she’d baked only yesterday. What else was she supposed to be doing? “Taking care of one’s husband and children.” The proper and right thing would be to nod politely. Maybe smile in a self-deprecating way. But sometime around her fortieth birthday, her tongue had gotten a little loose.

After squeezing Leanna’s hands one more time, Doreen stood up. Carefully arranged the tails of her kapp. Picked up a purse that Leanna hadn’t noticed she’d been carrying.

In addition, she wasn’t exactly sure how all the other women would feel about her seeing so much of Evan Keim. She’d never heard any of the members talk about having gentlemen callers. Was that because they didn’t have any? Or could it be that Leanna simply wasn’t close enough to hear about such things? As much as she’d love to ask the others for relationship advice, she wasn’t sure it would be received as easily as Louise’s menu dilemma had been. She decided to keep everything to do with Evan Keim to herself.

Jeremy smiled at her but noticed that something had changed in her expression. Maybe she didn’t look as assured? Or maybe it was disappointment? “What’s wrong?” “Nothing.” “You sure?” “Jeremy, I’m fine.” ​And there it was. The number one phrase that each of his three brothers had warned him about. It seemed that “I’m fine” was the universal statement that women said when things weren’t actually “fine” at all.

The story of sweet Leanna Mast discovering independence and finding her way in a world without her controlling husband was at times heart-wrenching as well as refreshing. After an invitation that is almost clandestine and definitely enticing, Leanna decides to attend a meeting of the Amish Widows Club. There she makes good friends and opens her heart and life to new possibilities that she had never considered before. Shortly after attending her first meeting, though, widower Evan Keim comes to call on her. Treating her with respect and deference, Evan is kind of courting her in the background, seeing needs and meeting them without fanfare or expectation of anything in return. Meanwhile, Leanna is getting more enmeshed in the AWC and enjoying the camaraderie that she has never had before. With gentle spirits and understanding hearts, the other widows accept Leanna just as she is and listen to her, something that is new to her since her husband thought control was the way to treat her instead of with kindness and love. Leanna’s dilemma is obvious, whether to encourage Evan or to continue with the women who have become her confidants and trusted friends. I loved the characters and the way the plot unrolled so methodically, capturing my heart and imagination as I wondered what I would do in the same circumstances. The characters were all believable and relatable and the plot was well-crafted, a delightful tale of finding oneself as well as a satisfying love story. I am so glad that this is the first book in a series because it was totally enjoyable so I am already looking forward to the next book.

I loved this wonderful Amish romance. I really enjoyed how Leanna finds a group of widows like her to help her get through the loss of her husband. I really enjoyed learning about Evan and his family and seeing how Leanna becomes friends with all of Evan’s family. I loved the romance and the ups and downs that come with a new relationship. I received a copy of the book and gave an honest opinion.

ready for a new amish series about friendship, grief, and second chances at love?

widow leanna mast is ready to live again, even if she's not sure she ever wants to try love again, so an invitation to the amish widows club arrives at just the right time. of course, evan keim also comes calling around the same time... and the man she had a childhood crush on just might disrupt the plans she had for her future.

the unexpected caller is such a sweet story. leanna finds friendship and community, as well as the hope that the future might be even better than what she could plan, and it's just heartwarming. i really loved evan's family, too; even though they've made different choices over the year, they've managed to stay connected and supportive. as the challenges of the story come up, i enjoyed seeing all the characters work to overcome them.

The Unexpected Caller is the first book of "The Amish Widows Club" series, and is such a fun, engaging read.

Having experienced unhappy marriage myself, and finding myself single again, I could relate to Leanna and her reluctance to marry again. It's hard to trust again. I loved to see how involved Evan's sons were in urging and encouraging him to pursue Leanna. I also appreciate how Leanna could find friendship and fellowship with other women.

If you enjoy sweet Amish fiction, with a touch of romance, you will definitely want to add this one to your TBR. I'm already looking forward to book two of the series!

Spiritual Themes
Two themes that stuck out to me were themes of prayer/discernment and regret. Although certain mentions were brief, I found them to be deeply meaningful, as the Lord used the book to minister to me. His timing is so good, as The Unexpected Caller proved to be an affirmation of the truths the Lord had just been speaking to me through my mom. I highlighted / bookmarked several passages as I read, and I’ll cover a few of these in my “What I Liked” section, below.

What I Liked
This is my third read by Shelley Shepard Gray. Given how much she has written, this is only a very small sample of her work. With that said, The Unexpected Caller is my favorite so far, as I feel that the spiritual element was more solid and meaningful than in the other two books I’d read. Maybe it just connected more with me (and, of course, I know that the most important element is the Lord’s timing in setting books before me when I most need them). At the same time, I found the book to be a restful read — one that I nearly completed in a single sitting.

The Widows
While I did not agree with all of its organizational decisions, I liked the idea of a club for Amish widows. Although I’m not Amish, nor a widow, I can speak as a young and single Christian woman. In my age range, I encounter a lot of social media about people who are prayerfully waiting to marry and have children. In the widows’ club, it’s refreshing to discover a group of women who are not intending to remarry, and I appreciate their heart to support one another.

Louise
Louise is a minor character in the book, and I wouldn’t have even remembered her name — but she caught my attention because of her tendency to “overthink things from time to time.” In a humorous scene, she’s talking to several other widows about how to stretch a meal to host twelve people, and she keeps responding to people’s advice with arguments or further questions. Confession: I totally saw myself in Louise.

Discernment
Louise ties into another section I bookmarked: a brief allusion to discernment (although the word isn’t actually used in the passage). Evan’s son, Jeremiah, is asking for relationship advice. Rather than giving a simple answer one way or the other, Evan encourages his son to pray for direction (p. 151). This was exactly what I needed to read, as my mom had just been encouraging me with a message about prayer for discernment! It was a fantastic affirmation of what the Lord had already been speaking to me through my mom.

Regrets
In conversation with one of the widows, Doreen, Leanna admits that she’s floundering in her decision-making because she’s concerned that she’ll have regrets. I liked the ensuing discussion, in which Doreen acknowledges the challenge of regrets, but highlights the importance of learning from our mistakes and moving forward:

"If you tried something and you failed, or you made a friend but it eventually soured, or if you had to learn the hard way about doing something better, then accept it instead of measuring it. Count it as life."
p. 207

And another word of wisdom from Doreen, carrying on the message of acceptance:

"On some days you’re going to feel fulfilled. On others you’re going to feel forgotten. And sometimes, no matter what, you’re going to feel both fulfilled and forgotten at the same time. But that doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Accept it."
p. 207

Hope!
This heading merited an exclamation mark (and a star in the margin of my copy of the book). There’s such a beautiful scene on pages 248 and 249 that ministered to me when I read it, and again when I reread it to write this review. YES!!

Content Notes
I recall just one use of the Lord’s name that read colloquially.

There’s one kissing scene that becomes a little intense. While it ends with the secondary character’s realization that he needs to stop, I felt that this scene was unnecessary to the story.

In another scene with these two secondary characters, the young lady remarks that she sometimes wishes her “parents would have done things differently” (p. 170). I have mixed feelings on this passage. Like the other character tells her, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to have fun sometimes (her comment is in reference to not getting to grow up eating ice cream). On the other hand, it’s not clear what she would like to be different. Her family has experienced financial hardship throughout her life, and I’m concerned that the point is that the parents have done something wrong because they’re poor, as I don’t really see any specific thing the parents have done wrong.

Recommendation Status
In my experience, The Unexpected Caller proved to be a light and sweet read, but one that still managed to convey meaningful spiritual truths. I really enjoyed the thematic content woven through this relaxing read. Moreover, I was grateful to find that the Lord ministered to me through multiple passages in the book, not only when I was reading it for the first time, but also as I was flipping back through to write the review.

Recommended, with some reader discretion, to those who enjoy Amish fiction, independent female protagonists, and sweet summer reads.

THE UNEXPECTED CALLER by Shelley Shepard Gray is the spectacular story of Leanna Mast. She finds herself a widow at forty-one with a whole world of opportunities, but which should she choose?

After the death of her husband, Leanna had a lot to learn from tending to the bills to seeing that the farm carried on. While part of her heart mourned, it hadn’t been a happy marriage. Never succeeding in having children had become a very sore spot in their marriage. One that never healed but progressively got worse in their marriage. Leanna is determined to never marry again and put herself in a position of being dominated over again. After a certain mourning time, her community seems to think otherwise. Soon, she’s is overrun with men “looking her over” for a possible marriage. While mannerly, she has no intentions of “settling down” with anyone.

A visit from Doreen, with an invite to the Amish Widows Club, had her first hesitant, but eventually she was anxious to attend. While shy at first, she soon found friendship and purpose within the club. It was fun to meet with people of like minds of never wanting to marry. Just when she was settling into a new way of life, she’s visited by Evan Keim, an old crush, who was widowed four years ago. She can’t believe, that after all this time, he’s actually paying attention to HER. Persistence, and his sweet ways, finally allows him friendship with a promise they would slowly see where things go.

Can Evan sweep Leanna off her feet or will he continually put his foot in his mouth? Does meeting and falling in love with Evan’s family have Leanna realizing what she’s been missing and always wanted? Will seeing Evan affect her membership in the Club? Will their completely difference of opinions about having a child be a deal breaker? Will Evan’s sons trying to be matchmakers backfire? After Evan realizes why Leanna still wants a baby, will it be too late? Will it take a catastrophe before Leanna realizes Evan will always be by her side, loving her? Dare Leanna dream that marriage doesn’t always mean being trapped in an unhappy, domineering union? Can Evan possibly hit the jackpot of love twice?

THE UNEXPECTED CALLER is an exceptional story you will feel compelled to read in one sitting. Shelley Shepard Gray gives us a story of adjusting, doing what’s right for you, standing your ground, proving oneself, taking risks, family, romance, forgiveness, second chances and wraps it all in a wonderful thread of faith. THE UNEXPECTED CALLER is without a doubt a FIVE-STAR book that I can highly recommend to everyone!

This being the first book in The Amish Widows Club series, I will anxiously be looking forward to the other books in this series!

Leanna Mast’s first marriage hadn’t really been a happy one. So after her husband’s untimely death, she’s not sure she ever wants to marry again, even though her community really expects that she will. Gentleman callers keep finding their way to her door, but she isn’t interested in any of them. She longs for companionship, though, and when a new acquaintance, Doreen, introduces her to the Amish Widows Club, she hopes she’s found the friendship and company she seeks.

But then Evan Keim comes calling. Evan, someone whom Leanna had always admired from a distance. Evan, whose wife died four years earlier. Suddenly, the thought of a new relationship holds a little more attraction for Leanna. But does Evan feel the same about her? And if she chooses to marry again, what will happen to her newfound friendships in the Widows Club?

This is a wonderful start to a new series! Leanna and Evan are both just so very likeable. Their steps toward a new start don’t always run smooth. They both struggle with doubt, and they both make missteps that seem to push the other away. But Evan’s four sons, grown and nearly grown, offer insight and wisdom, as does Doreen. Slowly, Leanna realizes what it would be like to be married to someone who isn’t cruel and controlling, what it would be like to belong to a family full of love and care for each other. And slowly, Evan realizes that maybe he can be the man Leanna needs, even if that takes his life in a direction he didn’t anticipate it would go.

Gray’s writing style is easy to read, and the story she tells is so engaging, it was hard to put the book down for the night. When I finished, I felt like I was saying “see you later” to new friends. I can’t wait to read the story of Jenna, which will be next in the series!

I am so lucky to have received a complimentary copy of @shelley.s.gray new book, The Unexpected Caller (Book 1 in The Amish Widow’s Club). The world disappears when I’m between the pages of her books. It’s been a bit since a book has made me forget I was walking on the treadmill and when I finally look up I have walked further than I expected.

Leanna has been widowed for a little over a year and the eligible bachelors or widowers have decided she is ready to be courted. Did anyone ask her? No. Being typical men they decided for themselves she is ready. Leanna isn’t sure if she wants to get remarried. Her marriage was not the best.

Evan is one of the men who come courting. He has decided they are meant to be. Leanna doesn’t disagree as he does make her heart race but she wants something he may not.

A secret but not secret group has asked Leanna to join. They are widows who have decided they will remain single. They meet and encourage each other. Provide a listening ear when needed. Doreen is the nurturer and most free with her advice. She is someone you want in your corner when conflicted.

Leanna must decide what she wants but first she must learn to be happy within.

Leanna is a character you will root for but also be exasperated with at times. I say that but maybe her struggles are truly ones you experience when your spouse passes. Luckily, I have not experienced that tragedy.

Evan’s four sons carry this story right along. I appreciate reading about an Amish father who accepts his kids for who they are and decide to be.

The Unexpected Caller is one you should not miss. Book two is already in the works!

THE UNEXPECTED CALLER by Shelley Shepard Gray is a fantastic read! It is the first book in the Amish Widows Club series. It is so wonderful that I want to read the next one right after this one. THE UNEXPECTED CALLER is the story Leanna who is trying to figure out how to move on. She feels as if her life is stuck in limbo. That is until she suddenly starts receiving gentlemen callers. One of them is Evan Keim. They became fast friends and it is fun to see how their relationship grows during THE UNEXPECTED CALLER and brought with it a healing for both of them.

While reading THE UNEXPECTED CALLER I wasn’t really sure if Evan and Leanna were ever going to let go of their pasts. At times, I was frustrated with both of them and their lack of communication. I also wondered if Leanna and Evan would continue to care for one another or will they resign themselves to the fact that they can never be? And if they do continue to care for one another, which one will have to make the change to make themselves work? You can never go wrong with a Shelley Shepard Gray book if you are a fan of the Christian fiction genre. All of her characters feel genuine and relatable and put your emotions on one heck of a roller coaster ride.

I loved how Shelley made me feel all of the anxiety and tension that the characters were dealing with. Besides all of that, there is also romance, forgiveness, and healing. A perfect way to spend the day on the couch with your favorite beverage, lost in the pages of a heart tugging but beautiful story. THE UNEXPECTED CALLER is a heart tugging story filled with patience, loneliness, heartbreak, and love that will hold you hostage until the very last page. Once I started this heartwarming story, it was very hard to put down! Shelley Shepard Gray isn’t afraid to write about subjects out of the norm as far as the Christian Fiction genre goes.

I love a good Amish fiction novel. And Shelley Shepard Gray is a wonderful author. Her characters always feel like they could step off the page and into your home. I do admit I love her mysteries a bit more than her romance, but I still love her romance too.

This novel offers a unique perspective as it’s from an Amish widow. Amish widows/widowers are expected to remarry after their mourning time is up. I don’t think it’s a law or set in stone somewhere, but it is expected.

Leanna isn’t so sure, though. She’s not really wanting to share a home again, let alone her heart. There’s no guarantee she wouldn’t get hurt. Or that it would be a wonderful match.

First, she finds friendship through the Amish Widow Club.

And then he comes calling.
Evan is the Amish gentleman also taking a second stab at love and marriage. He has four grown sons. Though they act a bit like elementary school in spots where they’re trying to help him out with his love life. Which, of course, does add some comedy to the romance.

I enjoyed watching both Evan and Leanna come to terms with whether they were willing to pursue a relationship and how that might play out for them. Part of Leanna’s hold-up is that if she remarries, she loses her newfound community of women, as she’s no longer eligible for the widows’ club.

This was a wonderful novel that I enjoyed reading, and I hope you give it a chance too.

Amish Fiction is my favorite Genre of Books. I have been a fan of Shelley Shepard Gray for many years. I was excited to read her new book. The Unexpected Caller by Shelly Shepard Gray is Book 1 in the Amish Widow Club series.

The Storyline got my attention from the very first pages. I was very engrossed in the book and could not put it down. The main characters in this book are Leanna Mast, Evan Keim and the women in the Amish Widow Club. Leanna became a widow at 41 years old and now a year later is trying to find her place of belonging. The Amish Community is encouraging her to remarry, although coming from a marriage that bore no children and was an unhappy marriage, she isn't wanting to remarry. Leanna joins a "Club" of other Amish Widows and she really has a connection with the women in the group. Leanna has come to a realization that she is comfortable being a widow for life. Evan Keim, who Leanna had a Crush on many years ago, comes calling on Leanna. Evan lost his wife 4 years ago and is now interested in Leanna. Leanna is honored by his interest, yet she is reluctant to pursue Evan. I could totally understand Leanna's initial reluctance, so I was glad to see that she had a change of heart. Evan and Leanna began to build a friendship and then slowing begin to take the relationship to the next level. Evan and Leanna are very careful to take a few things into consideration including Evan's sons and that Leanna does want a child of her own. Grab a copy of this book to see how things unfold for Evan and Leanna. I HIGHLY recommend this book of Second Chance Romance, Family and Faith. GREAT BOOK!

This book was absolutely amazing and now I can't wait for the next one in this series! Totally a 5 star read for me, I FLEW through it!

Leanna is a widow who has no interest in marrying again,especailly since all the single men in her community have been showing up back to back one after the other to court her. Tired of the whole courting process, she joins a secret group of widows who are determined to stay single and support each other. She quickly grows to love the friendships she finds there. But then Evan comes calling and makes her wonder if she should consider marriage once again.... Years ago, before they married other people, Leanna always had a crush on him. Now they're both widowed, but while Evan is ready to find love again, Leanna has already made up her mind that she never will. Evan, however, isn't giving up that easily! And his boys also will not let him quit trying to win her over to the idea.But both seem set in their ways and compromise will be needed for both to get their second chance at love... or remain single for good!

I loved these two together!!! Their relationship felt real and I was completely invested in seeing them let those walls down and give love another try. Evan's boys were one of my favorite parts of the story and I loved how supportive they were of their dad and their side romances as well. I am so happy we got to meet Jenna, the next widow in the series. I am curious how her story will turn out! I can't wait!

Another favorite story from my favorite author.

Since I first heard this was going to be a new series I have been excited to read it.

Leanna Mast is a new widow who is adjusting to her new path in life. After being in a unhappy marriage, Leanna has realized that she is lonely. Not necessarily for a man, but friendships. While married, she had no opportunity for friends to talk to. Now she has time. The opportunity presents itself in another widow who happens to find her way to Leanna. This elderly widow invites her to The Amish Widows Club. Hesitant at first, Leanna accepts the invitation and realizes that she has missed out on years of talking and laughter and friendship.

Evan Keim has been a widower for four years. He and his wife, Rose had four sons. Each son has or is in the process of choosing their path in life: to stay Amish or step away from the Amish lifestyle. Evan is content in his son's choice as long as it is prayerfully decided. Now that his boys are grown, Evan has decided to call on Leanna Mast. He has liked her for some time now, but wanted to make sure she had enough time to grieve.

Leanna Mast has already decided that another marriage is not what she wants, and she makes that perfectly clear to Evan. But is Evan willing to just be Leanna's friend or will he fight to win her over?

This new book series is off to a great start with the concept of the Amish Widows Club and the story of Evan and Leanna. I look forward to the next love story and friendships that are formed.

This is a fantastic book! I have read many, many books by Shelley Shepherd Gray and in my opinion this is one of my favorites by far! The storyline was fascinating and I connected with the characters right away.

Leannna is AMAZING! She's a nice person, almost too nice. Her marriage had some difficulties ( her husband passed away) and another marriage doesn't seem to be in the cards. I have mixed feelings about Evan. One minute I want to hug him and the next, I want to smack him upside the head. He can be incredibly sensitive and then dig in his heels in stubbornness. Jeremy is my favorite!! He's only 17, but he's very wise. He gives great advice. His heart is compassionate and kind.

Faith in God is prevalent throughout the book. Leanna finds herself in a very dire situation. "In a moment of clarity, she sensed God's presence. Reminding her that He was a God who didn't seek vengeance. He was with her. Guiding her. Reminding her that He was always there." Another time Jeremy is asking Evan about the future. "..I know that the Lord has already determined our futures. Because, one way or another, the Lord always provides. He holds us in His arms and guides our futures."

The Unexpected Caller by Shelley Shepard Gray is a charming and heartwarming debut for The Amish Widows Club series. I truly enjoyed getting to know Leanna Mast, along with Evan Keim and his family. Evan’s son, Jeremy, quickly became a favorite of mine. Though he is only seventeen, he offers wise advice, shows remarkable kindness, and has such a big heart. Leanna’s puppy, Bumble, is an adorable addition who brings extra sweetness to the story. I also loved the idea of the Amish Widows Club itself. It is a wonderful way for widowed women to find companionship, receive help when they need it, meet new people, and step into fresh adventures. Shelley Shepard Gray’s engaging writing style pulled me easily into the story, and I appreciated the gentle humor sprinkled throughout. The epilogue was especially satisfying, wrapping things up in a lovely and thoughtful way. Faith is beautifully woven throughout the novel, adding depth and encouragement. My favorite quote is, “. . . I know that the Lord had already determined our futures. Because, one way or another, the Lord always provides, Jeremy. He holds us in His arms and guides our futures. That is how it is. It is how it will always be.” I am already looking forward to the next The Amish Widows Club novel, which will feature Jenna. This is the kind of story that leaves you smiling, uplifted, and eager to return to this wonderful circle of friends.

I love reading stories by Shelley Shephard Gray! Her stories are always a breath of fresh air that makes you want to keep coming back for more. This is the first book in the Amish Widows series.

Leanna Mast is a widow who is also recovering from a rough marriage. She is visited by several calling men whom she has no plans to marry. When approached by an unexpected visitor, she gets invited to a widow’s club.

Evan Keim lost his wife four years ago. He has admired Leanna from afar. Encouraged by his children, he takes the plunge and calls on her. Building a friendship with Leanna is a lot more complicated than he thought.

Jeremy Keim is Evans’ son. He is at a crossroads when he realizes he is head over heals for a girl. The complication is that this girl is English. He is learning what it is to be a man but also what he wants to do with his life.

This story is so cute. The characters are wonderful in how they communicate. It makes you feel like you are in the story with them. You will be on the edge of your seat figuring out what each character is going to choose!

The unexpected caller by Shelley Shepherd Gray is a uniquely special book in Shelley’s new series, the Amish widows club.

The book is well written and quite believable. Since I am also a widow, I could identify with Leanne from the very beginning. The adjustment to widowhood and learning how to control your own life was quite believable. I could understand her reluctance when others thought it was important to remarry quickly when she was unwilling to take that step.

The widow’s club that she became a member of, was her saving grace. It allowed her to have fellowship outside of her church community and identify with others as they maneuvered the same plight as she did.

The characters were very believable, including Evan Keim and his family.
Although Evan was a little awkward and bumbling in his approach to love, one could not help but love him as a character.

This change of life story captured you attention from the very beginning and kept your interested the whole time. In my opinion, this was a five star book.

I enjoyed reading this book that is the first in a brand new series. Poor Leanna has been a widow for a little over a year and all of the sudden she has single men coming to her house in hopes of courting her. Her marriage wasn't ideal and isn't looking forward to remarrying. This part of the story is what drew me in, because I have been there. Then one day a Lady comes to her house and hands her a card inviting her to the Amish Widows Club. She is skeptical at first but after a couple of meetings, she feels welcomed and finally free. Still there are the single men who wants to court her, including one named Evan who lost his wife four years earlier. If she allows Evan to start coming around, what will happen to her newfound freedom? Then she is told that if she remarries, she is no longer allowed to meet with the widows Club. What will she decide, what is she willing to give up? New friends and freedom or the chance to have a real love? Grab your copy to find out what she decides. This novel is such a delightful read. The characters are all so devoted to family and the Lord and it shows in their interactions with each other. As a widow Leanna has to decide if she wants to marry again, therefore accepting callers in a polite way, which is what is expected as Amish custom, or if she wants to remain a widow and stay single for the rest of her life. Doreen, as the founder of the Amish Widow’s Club, has invited her to join the club as long as she remains a widow. Then there is widower Evan and a single amish man named Edmund who want to call on her in the hopes that she will be willing to marry again. Because of the decisions and situations of her past Leanna is not quite sure which way will bring her the fulfillment she yearns for most and the possibility that maybe her dreams will finally be reality. She must lean on and trust the Lord even more now as she seeks His guidance and His will for her life during this crucial time of moving forward.

I highly recommend this book and I look forward to reading the rest of this series since I’m sure each one will be just as delightful to read as this one was.

The Unexpected Caller by Shelley Shepard Gray was an emotional, beautifully written story that completely pulled me in from the beginning. The blend of mystery, faith, family, and romance created a compelling and heartfelt read that was difficult to put down.

The characters felt genuine and relatable, each carrying their own struggles and emotional depth. I especially loved how the story explored healing, trust, and the importance of connection during difficult times. The pacing was steady, with just enough suspense woven throughout to keep me eagerly turning the pages.

Shelley Shepard Gray does an excellent job of creating a warm, immersive atmosphere while still delivering emotional tension and meaningful character growth. The relationships developed naturally, and the ending felt satisfying and hopeful without feeling rushed.

Overall, this was a wonderfully engaging and uplifting read that balanced emotion and intrigue perfectly. Easily a 5-star read for me, and one I would happily recommend to fans of heartfelt inspirational fiction.

The Unexpected Caller, the first book of The Amish Widows Club by Shelley Shepard Gray, is a hit. 

I loved this book from the very first and didn't want to put it down. Not only does it have a really pretty and inviting cover that will grab your attention, but it is full of amazing characters with such depth; you won't want to put it down and the imagery throughout the book makes you feel like you are right there in the middle of what is going on. 

I was rooting for Leanna Mast from the very beginning, she had such a touching story and you could feel her pain of the past along with some hope for the future. Also, Evan and his family I wanted to be part of their family.  

Throughout the entire story you can feel the range of emotions (I might have shed a few tears) that each person goes through and I love how they are so unquietly different and at the same time complete each other. I love the idea of a widow's club even if it might be a secret.  

This is not your typical Amish Fiction story (I mean that in a good way). I am so looking forward to the next installment. I would highly recommend this book.

The Unexpected Caller is written by Shelley Shepard Gray, This is the first book in the Amish Widow Club series. I am a huge fan of this author, she is one of the first authors I discovered when I switched to Christian Fiction. I am super excited for this series.

In this story we meet Leanna Mast. She is a 41 year old widow. Her marriage was not perfect. She will be expected to marry again. She has a lot to learn. She has to learn how to pay the bills, manage her money, and to tend the farm. She also has a lot of suitors trying to get to know her.

It’s the unexpected invitation to the Amish Widows Club, does she finally start to heal and grow. She is hesitant at first, but she soon finds purpose. Then someone from her past, also is widowed and she wonders if she can open her heart again.

I loved Leanna and Evan. I loved seeing her evolve throughout the book. The author always writes such amazing characters. I am so excited for this series.

I have several favorite Amish writing authors, and this is one of them.
I was so excited to see a new series she has put out of which this is the first one.
The Amish Widows Club is pretty self-explanatory. Widowed Amish women are invited to join the club. Here they get support as they are grieving and make new friends, some just need the support for a short amount of time and then remarry. Some believe in a once in a lifetime love and don't want to remarry. The widows in the club are of all ages.
I enjoyed meeting forty-one-year-old widowed Leanna Mast, childless she expected to have a lifetime of marriage, but it was not to be.
Evan Keim is a widower with three sons and grandchildren. Leanna has known him a long time but hasn't expected him to come calling and she's not looking to remarry.
God has other plans for this couple though.
Such a beautiful, uplifting, encouraging story filled with faith and letting God lead the way. Faith, family, friendship and eventually more.
Very enjoyable story.

I love loved this one! I knew it was going to be good when I saw it and I was right! I'm only sad it ended so soon! I tried savoring it but it was a no go. I ended up devouring it as if I couldn't get enough.
Leanna Mast was a joy in getting to know. A little rough around the edges at first but who wouldn't be after a marriage like hers.
I enjoyed watching her come out of her shell and be the woman I knew she could be with new friends and Gott's help.
I found myself rooting for her and Evan.
Jeremy was funny too and wise. I kept wishing that he'd take his own advice to his dad and put it to use for himself.
I'll be thinking about this book because it's a different type of Amish story a sort of a healing system for widows. I was delighted to see this.
5 stars as always for Gray’s books because I thoroughly enjoy them! Especially this one! I hope to see more!

At first when we meet Leanna, there are a lot of unexpected callers, and she doesn't seem to happy about it. We learn some of her marriage to her late husband, and her desires to have children, even though that never came to pass.
I loved that she found the support of the Widow's Club, I belong to one, and to get there is not fun, but we are all in the same boat, and as with Leanna, they become fast friends.
The author does give us a glimpse at what life could be for her, but she would have to give up her club and friends, will she do it?
Pretty soon there is more than one caller whom might make a match?
We do get to meet long time friend and possible caller, Evan, but when he finds out what she wants, he more or less heads for the hills.
This was such an enjoyable page turning read for me, and I loved the epilogue! Now I can't wait for the next book in this series!

The beginning of this book built gently, as Leanna began to venture out to the Amish Widow’s Club and started to imagine her life differently than she had before. Building friendships with other women was something that she had been missing in her unhappy marriage.

This book really took off and I began to fly through the pages as the potential for a loving and happy relationship with Evan presented itself. However, Leanna had such fear. It was hard, as the reader, to know that Evan would be a wonderful match for her yet see her be afraid to reach for the possibility of happiness. The back and forth between them and the uncertainty that flared up at times felt so realistic, though, as they wrestled with what a future together should look like.

I ended up thoroughly enjoying this story, loving the sweet epilogue, and looking forward to the next book in the series.

This book is book 1 in a new series (The Amish Widows Club) by Shelley Shepard Gray and it has left me excited to see where the rest of the series goes.
In this book the characters are strong full of faith, love and community. The storyline flows easy and the setting is explained so well it’s as if you have been there yourself.
I really enjoyed reading this book and felt as if we all can relate, weather your a young widow or widower, know someone who is, or older one it’s so important to have others who have walked that path before so you realize your feelings, thoughts, and sense of self are all normal parts of your journey. I loved how this author brought forth the realization that it’s ok to have all your feelings and know that weather your part of one group or another in the end you will be exactly where God planned all along as long as you trust and keep your faith in the process.
I was blessed to receive a copy of this book and I’m so happy to recommend this book. All opinions are my own and I hope you pick up a copy for yourself
