Sheriff's daughter Harley Tatum hates injustice, as it hits particularly close to home. Her trauma-riddled past made her vow never to return to Copper Mountain, where she lost her family and was abandoned by the man she loved. But when she receives a call that the drug dealer responsible for so much of her pain is at large, she decides to return to Alaska for one final chance at justice.
The last person Jericho Bowie expected to see in Copper Mountain is the woman he abandoned years ago. When Harley needs his heroic avalanche dog, Orlando, to track down a drug lord, Jericho realizes he has a chance to redeem his mistakes. As they navigate the treacherous Alaskan mountains, tentative feelings grow yet again, but their mission quickly turns defensive as the hunted becomes the hunter, and only courage, trust, and a loyal K9 can lead them home alive.
Bestselling and award-winning author Susan May Warren packs action, adventure, and heart-pounding suspense into her newest K9 novel set in the rugged wilderness of Alaska.
I can't help be amazed at the gifts God has delighted me with - a wonderful husband, four amazing children, and the opportunity to write for Him.
I've been writing as long as I can remember - I won my first book writing contest in first grade! Over the years, writing has become, for me, a way to praise God and see Him at work in my life.
Although I have a degree in Mass Communications from the University of MN, my real writing experience started when I penned the The Warren Report - a bi-monthly newsletter that detailed our ministry highlights.
Living in Russia meant I never lacked for great material - and those experiences naturally spilled out first into devotionals and magazine articles and finally into my first published story, "Measure of a Man," in the Tyndale/HeartQuest, Chance Encounters of the Heart anthology.
Susan and husbandI grew up in Wayzata, a suburb of Minneapolis, and became an avid camper from an early age. My favorite fir-lined spot is the north shore of Minnesota - it's where I met my husband, honeymooned and dreamed of living. The north woods easily became the foundation for my first series, The Deep Haven series.based on a little tourist town along the shores of Lake Superior. I have to admit - I'm terribly jealous of Mona, the heroine of my first full-length book, Happily Ever After, a Christy Award Finalist published in 2004 with Tyndale/Heartquest.
Our family moved home from the mission field in June 2004 -- and now we live in the beautiful town I'd always dreamed of! God has amazed me anew with His provision, and blessings -- and allowed me a season when I can write full time for Him.
I 'm delighted you've stopped in to visit. My hope is that you'll be blessed and encouraged by soul-stirring stories of regular people interacting with a God who loves them.

If you are a fan of second chance or reunion stories - you'll love Scent of Hope. Jericho Bowie and Harley Tatum both have pasts they try to escape by running away. But when circumstances bring them both back to Copper Mountain, they get a second chance to make things right--and stop a criminal.
I love that sparks fly between Jericho and Harley, but danger awaits with every turn of the page. Jericho's search and rescue dog, Orlando, steals the show, but the part that resonated with me was the healing journey the hero and heroine go through by returning to their roots. By coming home, they find what they've been missing. And, as with most SMW novels, the unique setting gives the story a magical and unique backdrop.
Also, I highly recommend this series on audiobook. The narrator has become one of my favorites and he really brings the story to life for me.
I received an ebook review copy of this book through NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own
A heartfelt thank you to @susanmaywarren @revellfiction and @greatreadsbookpromo for the #gifted book and @recordedbooks for the #gifted audiobook.
This is the second book in the Call of the Wild series, yet it can be enjoyed as a standalone. Harley and Jericho share a compelling history, and I was captivated by the rekindling of their chemistry. As Harley seeks to bring a fugitive to justice, she must collaborate with Jericho and his loyal dog, Orlando.
Harley and Jericho have faced many hardships in life, carrying emotional baggage that makes them wary and hesitant. The supporting characters around Jericho and Harley added richness to the story. The writing brought the Alaskan wilderness to life. The seamless blend of suspense, adventure, and romance created a truly engaging read. The narrative explores themes of forgiveness, healing from past wounds, trusting in God's plan, and discovering hope amidst brokenness. The faith elements were naturally woven in, deepening the characters' growth.
The narrator excelled at breathing life into the characters, capturing the tension and emotional depth with skill.
If you’re drawn to stories of suspense, romance, and second chances, don’t miss this book. It’s available now and promises an unforgettable journey. I'm really looking forward to diving into the first book.
I received a complimentary audiobook copy from RBmedia | Recorded Books. I was not required to leave a positive review, and all thoughts are my own.
I really enjoyed listening to Scent of Hope by Susan May Warren, narrated by Brian Hutchison. This was such an exciting blend of romantic suspense, second chance romance, and wilderness adventure. I especially loved the Alaska setting and the search-and-rescue elements woven throughout the story. Orlando the avalanche dog completely stole my heart.
I’m always a fan of friends-to-more and second chance romances, and Harley and Jericho’s relationship had so much emotional depth. Their shared history, heartbreak, and lingering feelings made their journey together compelling from beginning to end. I also appreciated that this can easily stand alone even though it is part of the Call of the Wild series.
The narrator did a wonderful job bringing the characters and tension to life. Brian Hutchison’s performance added so much emotion and intensity to both the suspenseful moments and the quieter emotional scenes.
The faith elements were encouraging without feeling overwhelming. One quote that especially stood out to me was, “God does not keep a record of wrongs.” That message of forgiveness, healing, and restoration fit the story beautifully. I also appreciated the family dynamics. The story shows that families can be complicated and messy, but it was encouraging to see people working toward healing and becoming closer.
This story has plenty of danger, excitement, emotional moments, and heart. If you enjoy Christian romantic suspense with strong faith themes, lovable dogs, breathtaking wilderness settings, and second chance romance, this is definitely worth picking up.
Book 1 in this series was an easy 5 star for me, with the cosy winter scenes mixed in with all the excitement and suspense Susan May Warren is known for. I don’t know why, but I didn’t find the get enjoyment from Scent of Hope. I think it was the up and down nature of Jericho and Harley’s characters that made the rest of the story and their relationship feel like a yo-yo. I wanted to finish the book just so they would be in a stable place. But the suspense is as good as ever, and I always love the Alaskan setting Susie May uses for many of her books. I much prefer staying in Alaska over the globetrotting of some of her other series. Overall, it wasn’t a bad book, but I just wasn’t as invested in the main characters as I was hoping.
Scent of Hope is another action-packed offering from Susan May Warren. Harley and Jericho are childhood sweethearts who 'just happen' to both return home to Copper Mountain at the same time. Their search for Mars Sorros forces them to work together, and in the process, work out their previous issues. Both have old wounds to work through, and their journeys to get to a place of faith and peace are so relatable. I'm so glad they were able to trust God and each other by the end of the book. There are several fun cameos from old friends that pop up in this story, and I can't wait until the next book in the series!
I enjoyed this no spice Christian romantic suspense. I love having books set in Alaska - my favorite locale. We also got to see previous characters and situations, which is always nice.
Harley was a cop and is now taking a quick trip home as a PI, tracking down one of the brothers of the group who was causing trouble in the last book. Jericho is a veteran, with a Search and Rescue K9, who is also back in their hometown to lend his services. When they are thrown together the sparks fly because they had a rocky parting years ago. People were in danger, words were exchanged, and the romance they had was severed.
This book had a lot: family, avalanches, SAR, missing people, faith, suspense, Alaskan snow, second chances, and so much more. I’m super excited to get the last book in this series and finish up this trilogy and get these bad guys taken down and taken care of for good. The romance is just kisses, intimacy level 2. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

“Sometimes all we need is someone to remind us who we are.“
Alaska + Susan May Warren + a K9 = instant must-read for me. And Scent of Hope absolutely did not disappoint. I immediately liked our heroine Harley who – when we meet – is taking down a fugitive with a nonlethal kinetic pistol, an assist from icy sidewalks, and a well-placed knee. Major respect. Especially when she could have stayed to catch up with Echo (whom we already know & love) over yummy cinnamon rolls instead. (I would have totally opted for the cinnamon rolls.) Turns out Harley’s back in Copper Mountain reluctantly, for the first time in several years, to track down a criminal whose name should be familiar to anyone who read book 1 in this series – Mars Sorros. Also turns out she’s not the only Copper Mountain prodigal who’s come home. Which brings me to our yummy hero Jericho Bowie (who we also have met before) and his avalanche SAR dog, Orlando. This dynamic man-canine duo are working through some recent trauma, and in Jericho’s case some past trauma as well. I adored Orlando and how he takes to Harley, not to mention the humor and heart he brings to the story. Of course I also loved the smokin’ chemistry (and kisses) between Jericho and Harley who have an emotionally-laden history of their own to address.
Harley runs headfirst into danger. Jericho needs to keep everyone safe. It’s what drove them apart the first time. Which means… yeah, there’s a lot to unpack in Scent of Hope. Regret. Loss. Guilt. Love. Hurt. Fear. Trust. Faith. Family. Second chances. And author Susan May Warren effortlessly weaves all of the above into a riveting story of romance, danger, adventure, and suspense. She keeps the pace moving quickly – without sacrificing emotional depth or a faith thread – and kept me on the edge of my seat because, y’all, she puts these characters through it. I trust this author. I do. But that didn’t negate the fact that I wasn’t sure all the good guys & gals were going to make it out of this particular adventure alive. Made all the more nerve-wracking by the fact that I felt completely immersed in the action, the wintry weather, and the sense of danger too. Had to check periodically to make sure I didn’t have any bullet wounds either. And the twists!! There were a couple of real surprises that Warren had tucked up her sleeve, revelations that changed everything, and I loved every minute of it.
Bottom Line: Scent of Hope once again proves that Susan May Warren is a master at balancing edge-of-your-seat danger with layered emotions, meaningful faith threads, and chemistry hot enough to melt an Alaska avalanche. I loved watching Harley and Jericho challenge each other, protect each other, and fall in love all over again… especially when that means a heapin’ helping of SMW’s trademark swoony kissing scenes. I equally loved Harley & Jericho’s faith journeys as well as the ensemble cast that ultimately help these two surrender to the One who sees them fully and loves them the most. And of course I can’t neglect to mention Orlando the scene-stealing, heart-melting SAR dog and a plot full of twists, some of which genuinely caught me off guard. Scent of Hope would be a great next read for fans of adrenaline-pumping suspense, knee-weakening romance, loyal dogs, and second chances.
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
Scent of Hope, the second book in the Call of the Wild K-9 series, brings us back to Copper Mountain, Alaska where Jericho Bowie and his rescue dog Orlando are part of search and rescue in avalanche country. When the local sheriff pulls together a team to track down the local thug, Sorros, it includes Jericho… and Harley Tatum, a recovery specialist who just happens to be the woman from his past.
Sparks, pain and tension between them show up right from the start. There is so much for them to work through. The good news is that even though Harley and Jericho have not seen each other in years, they still know one another so well they can practically finish the other’s thoughts. I was completely invested in their hearts healing and the possibility of them moving toward one another.
At the same time, the suspense thread builds with steady momentum. The danger isn’t just Sorros—it’s also the harsh Alaskan weather, the treacherous terrain, the risks of search and rescue, and even a memorable moose encounter. All of this adds to the unpredictability and kept me engaged.
To balance things out, there is Orlando, Jericho’s bernedoodle. What a dog! He brings warmth and a touch of humor, and he is loyal, sensitive, and brave. His instincts to both comfort and protect make him feel like a true partner and I loved every scene he was in.
This series also has a strong faith element. I love how scripture is woven into the characters’ journeys. It appears in their thoughts, their conversations, and in the quiet moments that follow. Susan May Warren creates such believable believers! Characters who are facing the everyday hurts and fears just like I am. Her stories are like a soothing balm.
At its core, this story isn’t just about catching a criminal. It’s about forgiveness, healing, and figuring out if something broken can be rebuilt. Maybe even seeing God’s guidance along the way.
If you enjoy romantic suspense with depth, faith, family, and a memorable dog, this one is well worth reading. I’m already looking forward to spending more time with the Bowie brothers.
I was given a complimentary copy from Revell publishers through Interviews and Reviews. Opinions here are my own.
Get ready for heart-stopping nonstop action, thrilling suspense, & swoonworthy second chance romance in a beautiful but deadly Alaskan setting. I devoured Scent of Hope in one sitting! Susan May Warren delivers an action packed, heartfelt story with a touch of faith that kept me on the edge of my seat.
P.I. Harley Tatum is strong, sympathetic, & definitely lives up to her “Here’s Trouble” nickname. She’s returning to Copper Creek to hunt down the drug dealer who destroyed everything including her family & her relationship with the only man she’s ever loved. But coming home brings back old memories & past hurts especially when she’s forced to work with her ex.
Jericho Bowie carries regrets & painful memories of his own. Returning to Copper Creek wasn’t planned, but he’s hoping he can sort out his past, reconnect with his brothers, catch the man who ruined so many lives, & get answers from the woman he still loves. Working with his darling search & rescue Bernie doodle Orlando, he hopes to help Harley track a killer.
I loved this story! Harley & Jericho’s second chance romance was achingly beautiful & filled with so much heart. There’s a lot of misunderstanding between them that’s teased out throughout the story & I loved seeing their underlying feelings resurface as they resolve the past.
The fast-paced manhunt for Mars was filled with several shocking twists & the suspense kept me eagerly turning the pages. I loved the heart stopping action with a criminal who’s as wily as a fox. The setting was amazing & I especially loved Harley’s old home. I adored Orlando, whom you just want to hug, renewing family relationships & a lovely, inspirational faith thread of forgiveness & second chances.
Though part of a series, it’s easily read as a standalone. However, I loved hearing about characters from the previous book & series. Highly recommend to romantic suspense fans! I received an advanced copy with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are completely my own & voluntarily provided.
Scent of Hope by Susan May Warren, author and Brian Hutchison, narrator
Rating: 5 star rating
I really enjoyed Scent of Hope. This story takes readers back to the Alaskan wilderness, where Harley Tatum returns to Copper Mountain after years away. She's been carrying the weight of a tragedy from her past and wants nothing to do with the memories waiting for her there. But when a dangerous fugitive connected to those events escapes, Harley is pulled into a search that forces her to face everything she's tried to leave behind.
The situation becomes even more complicated when she has to work with Jericho Bowie, the search-and-rescue expert she once loved. As they follow clues through rugged mountains, harsh weather, and increasingly dangerous situations, they uncover secrets, confront old misunderstandings, and find themselves in more danger than they expected. Jericho's rescue dog, Orlando, was a wonderful addition to the story and often stole the scene.
I loved how Susan May Warren blended suspense, adventure, and romance with strong Christian themes. The story focuses on forgiveness, healing from past hurts, trusting God's plan, and finding hope when life seems broken. The faith elements felt natural and added depth to the characters' journeys.
Brian Hutchison's narration kept me engaged from beginning to end, bringing both the tension and emotional moments to life. The ending wrapped up the suspense well and gave the characters a satisfying, hope-filled conclusion.
If you enjoy Christian romantic suspense, second-chance romance, wilderness survival, and stories about God's redemption and grace, this audiobook is definitely worth listening to.
Thanks to NetGalley, RBMedia, Susan May Warren author, and Brian Hutchison, narrator, for providing this audiobook for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

What is the last book you read that was very entertaining? Scent of Hope by Susan May Warren was a very entertaining story that made my yard work fly by this past weekend.
Harley Tatum is a private investigator in Alaska. She lost her family when she was young and the one man she loved, Jericho, never returned home after enlisting in the military. Jericho has finally returned home with his avalanche dog, Orlando, and they must work together to solve a mystery and rescue those they love.
My thoughts on this book:
• This was great on audiobook. Brian Hutchison was an intriguing narrator.
• This story was action packed.
• It is the second book in the Call of the Wild series. I need to read the first book in the series. This worked as a standalone.
• This story was a second chance romance story, which is one of my favorite tropes.
• I loved that Orlando was a Bernedoodle with a stressful back story of his own.
• Harley is a strong woman, but she only trusts herself and won’t ask for help.
• Jericho likes to control every situation and can’t trust that Harley has her own skills.
• This was a good Christian and inspirational novel. There were messages about loss, grief, forgiveness, and putting your trust in God.
• There was great chemistry and depth of feeling between Harley and Jericho.
• This was a clean read.
Scent of Hope by Susan May Warren was a great action packed second chance romance with mystery, suspense, dogs, and a great Alaskan setting. I highly recommend if you are looking for an entertaining read.
Thank you to Revell and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Susan May Warren brings the reader the second novel to the Call of the Wild series with 'Scent of Hope'. Sheriff's daughter Harley Tatum has returned to Copper Mountain. Losing her parents in a plane crash, her brothers to drugs and abandoned by the man she loved, she doesn't want to be there, but she is sent to track down the drug dealer responsible for the death of her brother. This many be her final chance at justice.
Jericho Bowie is also back in Copper Mountain. He is the man who left Harley after the death of her parents. as his parents were also killed in the plane crash and his father was the pilot. He has been working for K-9 rescue and has been called in by the sheriff to help in the hunt for the fugitive. What he doesn't expect is to see Harley again. He quickly comes to realize that this may be his opportunity to repair the damage done in the past. With their adventures through the mountains to capture this man, secrets are revealed, feelings are growing and past mistakes need to be confronted. It is only with courage, hope, trust and their canine, Orlando by their side, they may make it out alive.
I have found her christian romantic suspense novels to be filled with relatable characters that will have you rooting for them. This second novel does work as a stand-along, however I choose to read them in order. This story followed another Bowie brother as his works through his feelings of over-protectiveness and guilt over the argument he had with his father. Harley is also dealing with guilt and both have to come to trust that God will get them through and walks with them in times of danger. It was filled with fast paced adventure and heart-pounding suspense. I couldn't put it down.
I received a complimentary advance copy of this book. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Narration: Great
Story: You want to know what I love about this author’s stories? They show keeping the faith under pressure. There are hard times and decisions that need to be made, and it’s here where we meet the characters. The characters feel real.
The feel of the story is edge-of-your-seat with a touch of under-a-cozy-blanket-by-a-fire. There is warmth and heart right alongside the suspense, and in this series, the dogs bring a little something extra (they are scene-stealers really). The dogs bring fresh appreciation for animals in service, and it makes for a heartwarming read.
You can feel the characters’ emotions, their pain and regret. I loved the plot twist, and the character development towards the end felt really well done.
I think at the heart of this story is trust in the Lord and our response in times of crisis. We don’t always react as we should when we get hurt or when we struggle, and this story has this feeling of He’s waiting. When I think back on the Scent of Hope, there is a steady and patient Presence—His presence—in the midst of the action.
That said, part of the story involves grief. Personally, I feel there is a fine line between getting closure and crossing into the territory of trying to talk to a d*ceased loved one. One of the scenes leaned toward the former for me, but another scene and the mention of a warmth (which could potentially be interpreted as a response) tipped it towards the latter for me.
Overall, I really enjoyed listening to the story, and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series!
Content: Christian Suspense Romance Faith Themes Intimacy level: Kisses Only Language: No profanity Violence Grief (loss before the novel starts) Sensitive subjects: references to a sibling who had struggled with substance ab*se
Harley Tatum is a hard charging PI who is fearless. Her sense of justice drives her and revs her engine more than anything. She has lost her parents to tragedy and her brother to drugs. She is, quite frankly, lost and living a somewhat empty life. The last person she wants to see is Jericho Bowie, the one responsible for breaking her heart in pieces.
Jericho and his K-9 avalanche dog, Orlando, have arrived back in Copper Mountain. Jericho has his own set of issues and haunts from the past. He is also a control freak who blames himself anytime that anything goes wrong around him. He is a runner who runs from his problems. He knows, in his heart, that he has these issues, and his life is a little empty as well. The only difference is that he still has siblings to lean on, unlike Harley.
They end up working together to find a source of pain for both of them. This drug lord seems to always be one step ahead of law enforcement.
This story of suspense and mystery is fast paced and there is danger from not only bad people, but also from the horribly dangerous weather of Alaska.
This was about second chances, but most importantly it was about realizing that neither of them are in control. They need to quit blindly going into dangerous situations and also realize that God is in control.
It was an emotional story of loss and pain, but also a redeeming story of letting go of the pain and the past in order to live a full life. Forgiveness is a key element of the story as well.
I love the descriptions of the beautiful Alaskan scenery, which just further shows God's handiwork in creation.
I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Revell Books through Interviews and Reviews. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Harley never intended to return to Copper Mountain, but the chance of finally capturing Mars Sorros and bringing him to justice is worth almost any sacrifice - even returning to Copper Mountain. And when it turns out that she'll have to work with the man who broke her heart, Jericho Bowie - well, yes, she'll even do that. But when the hunt brings to light the things that separated them years ago, they'll be forced to face the question of whether to make the same decisions now or whether they've grown and changed. And of course, when hunting someone like Mars, there's also the question of whether they'll even live to make such decisions...
As I've come to expect from this author, this was a great mix of action, romance and personal growth - not to mention hope! Her books are feeling increasingly interconnected, which is great if you've read them all and can keep track but still does generally allow for coming in in the middle and picking up the relevant threads (though it's clearly based on or following on from previous books). I loved the way everyone welcomed Harley back home - even if it took her a while to accept it as home again - but perhaps even more I loved Jericho's 'reunion' with his brothers as they worked out old problems and prepared for better relationships in future. Orlando was also a great addition! As for the action/suspense side of things, it definitely kept me engaged, and managed to tie up one thread satisfyingly while leaving others for future books, so that was good. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable read that can be read on its own from a romance point of view but does require the full series (or more) for the full story.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Scent of Hope by Susan May Warren is the second book in the Call of the Wild series. As a dog lover, I love that dogs are a main character in each book of this series. Along with that, this book is a fast-paced action-packed book.
Harley Tatum is a private investigator who came home to Copper Mountain, Alaska, with her job to catch a bad guy she has been trying to catch for a long time. Coming home is painful as a drug dealer destroyed her family and she is the lone survivor. This is the bad guy she is trying to find and her family history fuels her search.
Jericho Bowie is back in Copper Mountain after serving in the military and working in search and rescue in Montana. His family owns a hotel that his dad hoped Jericho would run one day. Instead, he ran away after his parents were killed in a plane crash. But before the crash, he had words with his dad that lingered in his heart and drove his decisions.
At one time, Harley and Jericho were neighbors and supported each other. Then things went awry and they went their own ways. Now they are expected to work together to catch the bad guy. Can they do it?
I enjoyed Scent of Hope. Along with the suspense and action, there is some romance. There are also some surprises along the way in this plot that I enjoyed. If you are an avid reader of Susan May Warren's books, there are characters from a couple of her other novels that make it into this one, which is fun. It is also a Christian novel and there is a faith element woven through the story. Even though Scent of Hope is the second book in the series, it could be read as a stand-alone too.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Great Reads Book Promotion. All opinions are my own.
“Sometimes all we need is someone to remind us who we are.”
This Alaskan set second-chance romantic suspense has all the feels!
It’s centered around 1 John 4:18 and features Harley Tatum and Jericho Bowie, once childhood sweethearts, who learn that perfect love casts out fear.
Harley is a headstrong and independent, resourceful P.I. in Juneau and doesn’t believe in showing her vulnerability. For her, true strength means going it alone. She hasn’t had an option since being orphaned and she’s lived believing that nobody’s got her back, so she needs to rely on herself and her training.
Jericho and his K-9, a Bernedoodle named Orlando, arrive home to Copper Creek after reaching the ‘end of the road’. Jericho allowed his need for control to come between him and Harley, and when he didn’t think he could live out their childhood dreams, he ran away. Can he redeem this mistake? Has too much time passed?
I was captivated by their journey back to each other as they learned to trust and show their vulnerability. I loved the reminder that we need to confront our past wounds so that we can find the courage to trust. What a beautiful redemption arc!
I loved, loved, loved getting to touch base with characters from Sky King Ranch. Warren is so wonderful at building connections between her series - no character is forgotten.
I’ll remember this book for the powerful reminder that sometimes second chances mean going through the darkness, but if we’re willing for it, there’s more than enough light, hope, and love waiting for us on the other side of the experience.
I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Thank you to Revell for the ARC and finished copy of Scent of Hope by Susan May Warren. All opinions are my own.
After reading and loving book one of the Call of the Wild Series, I was super excited to read this sequel. I love the community and setting of this series because people look out for each other, and the Alaskan wilderness is unpredictable.
Scent of Hope follows two people that have a lot of trauma and a past together that they need to reconcile if they want to work together. Even though Harley and Jericho didn’t expect to see each other again, much less work together, I loved seeing how they had to overcome past hurts to trust each other again.
Harley and Jericho were thrust together, and I loved seeing how they looked out for one another and how they clearly knew each other super well even though it had been years since they had interacted.
Jericho’s dog Orlando was so sweet and protective, and I loved how he bonded so quickly with Harley. He also was so impressive with how he could find people by scenting the air.
One other part that stood out to me was the way the characters grew in their faith. I appreciated how they tried to better themselves and learn to trust God despite all they had been through.
The only part I didn’t love was that the pacing seemed pretty slow compared to the first book in this series. I did think that the last third of the book was the most interesting, and I definitely am interested in reading the next book in this series.
Overall, I would recommend this book if you like faith-filled stories with danger and romance set in Alaska.
“The remedy isn’t to fix the old . . . it’s to accept the new. To see things as God sees—through the eyes of grace and love. That’s what a new heart does.”
No matter how many books by Susan May Warren I read, the author never fails to amaze me with her talent for writing fast-paced, adrenaline-infused stories packed with fantastic characters, wisdom from hard-fought faith, and tender romance. I particularly enjoyed the K-9s in this series and loved Orlando in this book. Jericho was a wonderful SMW hero, full of regrets, hurts and pride but finally arriving at the place of humility, surrender, and peace. Harley was a spitfire with her impulsive but keen detective instinct, intelligence and tenacity. Their second chance romance was sweet and just right. I loved traveling down memory lane with them and soaking in the warmth and happiness before things imploded. The storyline continues to chase down the Sorros family and this book shows that perhaps the villainous family is involved in more crimes than anyone suspected. The overarching story arc is not finished yet so I’m looking forward to the next book. I really loved getting to know the Bowie brothers better and am hoping for a book with Hudson and Malachi as the main characters.
I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Revell via Interviews and Reviews and NetGalley. I was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
"Scent of Hope" is a Christian romantic suspense. Jericho and Harley both lost their parents when a plane flown by his father went down in bad weather. Jericho left for the military, and Harley left to become a detective. After her brother died from an overdose of drugs supplied by a family involved in distributing drugs, she's determined to stop them from harming more people. They reconnected when the sheriff asked each to join him in tracking these men down. Jericho has been running a SAR dog training school. He and his scent-tracking dog were struggling after an avalanche training session turned tragic.
Jericho and Harley cared for each other and were best friends since they were kids. Yet they had so much painful history and bad interaction patterns in their relationship that they just kept replaying the hurtful beliefs that had come to define them. They also both felt that obtaining justice and keeping the people they loved safe depended on their abilities, and they already knew that didn't always work out. They learned to trust God and gain a new heart that allowed their relationship to start anew, too.
The main characters were complex, realistic people, and I cared about what happened to them. The suspense was created by relationship tensions, bad weather, and bad guys trying to kill them. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this suspenseful novel.
I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
Harley's job is taking her back to the one place she swore to never return to, Copper Mountain. Back to bad memories, hurt and where she lost everything. But sometimes facing the past is the only way to move forward, although she never expected to find past love Jericho there also. He also has been assigned to help her track down the drug dealer from a dangerous criminal organization, with his tracking K9, Orlando. As they battle the Alaskan weather and the past between them, they also become target's themselves. Although all this hurt and pain has been brought back, Harley is also reminded of the beauty of Alaska that she didn't realized she missed. Her parents really gave her and her brother a great life until tragedy struck. She needs to find answers to what really happened between her and Jericho all those years ago. But she needs to stay focused to find this criminal drug dealing thug, Mars to put him away for good or they might not have a chance to discuss the past and see what the future holds. Another great action packed thriller set in the wilderness of Alaska. I enjoy that these can be read as standalone but that there are characters from other novels always making an appearance. Thank you to the author and publisher for the complementary novel and to Great Reads Book Promotions for the tour invite. This review is of my own opinion and accord.
If you're looking for a calm, no stakes romance read... well, this one isn't it. But if you're looking for an adventurous read with suspense that will have you unable to look away, Susan May Warren will always deliver on that front, and this one was no exception! Right from the start, I found myself drawn into Jericho and Harley's story. I will always love a good second chance romance, and there's nothing like searching for a fugitive to bring a couple back together, right? I enjoyed that romance between these two, but it was definitely the action and suspense that kept me turning the pages to see what was going to happen next... I couldn't get enough. And those twists and turns... let's just say there were definitely some that I absolutely did not see coming. With the blend of suspense, romance, family drama and faith elements, there was much to love in this story. If you love Christian romantic suspense and second chance romance, this is one not to be missed.
Scent of Hope is the second book in the Call of the Wild series, and while you may be able to enjoy as a standalone, I do recommend the first book as well.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.

This was the first book I’ve ever read by Susan May Warren, and I really enjoyed it!
“Scent of Hope” is a second-chance romantic suspense, set in Alaska. The premise of this story intrigued me from the start! I loved Harley and Jericho, and Orlando was the best little K9 partner.
There were so many twists and turns in this story, and the suspense kept me turning pages as quickly as I could!
The story took me a little while to get into, but I think that this is largely due to the fact that I jumped right into this series at book #2. There were a lot of characters in the story that I would have already known had I started with the first book, so it took me a little bit to catch up and piece certain people and relationships together. I would definitely recommend reading this series in order. I'm still planning to go back and read the first book in the series, but I already know much of the plot from reading the second book first.
This is a no-spice romantic suspense with strong Christian faith themes throughout.
I’m looking forward to the next book in this series!
Susan May Warren has a way with words that captivates me, and I cannot wait to open her novels and read them from cover to cover in one sitting! Her newest release, Scent of Hope, does not disappoint! Set in the small town of Copper Mountain, Alaska, and the rugged areas surrounding it, Warren has plenty of scenery to provide a backdrop for this romantic suspense novel about former friends whose relationship was on the verge of more, and they parted badly. Now they are thrown back together again, and the stakes have never been higher. Can they learn to trust each other again? There is so much malice from the past and present; if the small group of good law enforcement does not get a handle on it, there will be more in the future. Also, there seems to exist a myriad of cover-ups of crimes, some from many years ago, some recent, and who knows what bad branch of law enforcement is overlooking now or even a part of! Murder is just waiting around the corner for all of the good guys! Be ready for an edge-of-your-seat, exciting read with this one! I highly recommend it!
Revell and NetGalley provided me with a complimentary copy of this novel. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own and without influence.
I was super excited to receive an audiobook copy of Scent of Hope from NetGalley. Thank you so much to NetGalley, and the publisher, Revell, for allowing the opportunity. And, Happy Publication Day to Susan May Warren!
It has been a while since I have read a Susan May Warren series, so it was great to dive back into her world and characters. Her romantic suspense novels are my favorite, and she is the queen of second-chance romances.
Scent of Hope is book 2 in the Call of the Wind series. I think I did myself a disservice by jumping into book 2 without having read Track of Courage. I was a little lost at first, but I was able to jump in nonetheless and become immersed in Harley and Jericho's story. The highlights for me were the pace (it kept me listening), the Alaskan atmosphere (beautiful yet dangerous), the characters (especially the side characters & family), and Orlando. Orlando was my favorite! The K9 rescue aspect makes the story of course!
The narrator did a fantastic job of voicing all characters. I do, however, enjoy when there are two different narrators to voice the main characters. But, overall, I enjoyed the audiobook and look forward to listening to the rest of the series.
After a horrible tragedy, Harley and Jericho both left their hometown, running from the pain. Now, years later, they are both back, still reeling from the blows life has dealt them. Having to work together to hunt down a drug smuggler and killer, Harley and Jericho are forced to confront the past, but those old hurts are not easily dismissed.
This is book two in the series. It is not necessary to read book one to understand this book. It is filled with strongly drawn characters, some of whom originally appear in some of her other series (which I have not read). These are characters who struggle with real issues like guilt, grief, fear, financial problems, drug use, and loneliness. These topics are handled well with few easy answers.
Plus, dogs!
I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to lovers of romantic suspense.
This is Christian fiction so expect prayer and discussions of salvation and faith.
Family friendly but some topics may not be appropriate for young readers.
Thanks to NetGalley and Revell. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
We are back in Copper Mountain with the latest addition to this Christian suspense romance series. This time it belongs to Harley Tatum and K-9 Rescue handler , Jericho Bowie. These two have a past but after Harley’s brother dies of a drug overdose and her parents were killed in an airplane piloted by Jericho’s dad, it was all too much for Harley. She felt Jericho had abandoned her, so she leaves Alaska. All that changes when she’s told the drug dealer is back in Alaska. Determined to find him, Harley returns to Copper Mountain never expecting to see Jericho. Will Harley’s need of his K9 to track the drug dealer be a sign to make amends with Harley? But that road to redemption , finding the drug dealer and surviving the danger of nature might be more than they can handle to surviving. This is a story filled with danger, survival, hope and second chances in life and love, and faith. Will they be able to overcome it all in the end? Bringing the story to life is the narrator, Brian Hutchinson. I was entrusted a copy of this audiobook by Netgalley. The opinions expressed are solely my own
Scent of Hope, book two in Susan May Warren’s Call of the Wild Series, is a great story. You can enjoy without having read book one, but I so enjoyed the recap of some of the other characters. Harley and Jerico are combustive, positively or negatively depends on the day and the circumstances. They both have a lot to learn (especially regarding trust) and forgiveness. I do love the emphasis of support from family, friends, and faith. All three cords are woven throughout and create a comforting supportive net. The addition of Orlando was just the right touch to draw these two out and together. The situations they encountered were pulse pounding and written well. The narrator did an excellent job with cadence and all the voices, whether male or female. I loved the Alaskan setting and all the references to the scenery and environment. While the overarching story is not yet over, the story of these two was very happily wrapped up and left the ending in a great place. I am looking forward to the next installment. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley, and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.
I think you can assume that if you're reading a review of mine for a book by Susan May Warren, it's going to be five stars. I'm going to fangirl about how amazing her writing it is and the depth of her characters.
This book is no exception.
Jericho and Harley were definitely an unconventional couple who clearly belonged together. I loved the journey their relationship took throughout the book as they both learned to lay down their pride, their determination to do everything themselves, and to lean on each other and on God instead.
Orlando was the best addition to this little family. I love all the K9s in this series and how their fierce love and loyalty is vital to saving the day. But I also loved that Orlando had some wounds and work to do as well and that in the end, he came out on top and faced his fear to save his family.
The adventure, the danger, the twists and turns of this plot were exceptional as always. Susan always keeps me reading into the night because I just can't wait to see what happens next.
I cannot wait for the next book of this series! November cannot come fast enough!
In the latest installment of the Call of the Wild series, Susan May Warren delivers exactly what readers crave—gripping suspense, pulse-pounding action, and a heartfelt second-chance romance. Add in heroic K9 rescue dogs (with as many quirks and wounds as their human counterparts), and SCENT OF HOPE becomes an irresistible, page-turning adventure from start to finish.
THE STORY: Harley Tatum swore she’d never return to Copper Mountain, Alaska, but when the criminal who shattered her family escapes, she’s forced to face her past. Teaming up with her former love, Jericho Bowie, and his search-and-rescue dog, she embarks on a dangerous hunt through the frozen wilderness where old wounds, lingering feelings, and deadly threats collide.
4.5 STARS BECAUSE, well, there’s just something about heart-pounding suspense and romance that turn those pages. Plus, there was more of a faith thread in SCENT OF HOPE that I appreciated. Considering the wild story, it was a great balance. Looking forward to the next winning installment of Call of the Wild.
I received an ARC from Revell through #netgalley for my honest review.
