The author is the senior pastor of Mariners Church in Southern California. He tells us that the toppling of leaders most often occurs when storms meet unhealthy roots. He writes that Christian leaders have the ultimate unfair advantage because we never lead alone. Being a follower of Jesus turns us into better leaders than we would be if we were not following Jesus. Leaders who follow Jesus are more visionary, convictional, servant-oriented, persevering, credible, familiar with transformation, and filled with more resolve than they would be without Jesus as the center of their lives.
In this book about what it means to be a rooted and fruitful leader, the author leads us through the book of Nehemiah, one of my favorite biblical examples of leadership. The author tells us that Nehemiah did not topple. He was rooted until the end of his life. Nehemiah’s leadership was also incredibly fruitful. Without healthy leadership roots, you will not have the fruit you and others desire.
Each of the chapters of the book focuses on the leadership fruit we all want, and the people we lead want from us, but in each chapter, we will discover the roots beneath the surface.
Among the topics covered in the book are vision, burden, prayer, conviction, servant leadership, credibility, character, change, and resolve.
The book includes two appendices:
Appendix 1: The Christian’s Unfair Leadership Advantage
Appendix 2: Rooted Followers First
The Rooted Leader is a helpful book on leadership looking at the leadership of Nehemiah.
Here are a few helpful quotes from the book:
• Leaders who try to leapfrog burden to get to vision arrive at vision without real conviction or power.
• The time you spend with God in prayer will form and fuel the vision He gives you.
• Life will beat vision out of you unless vision is connected to deep conviction.
• Leaders must be clear on the important questions of why, what, when, who, and how.
• Christian leaders can and should be the most convictional leaders because of both clarity and courage.
• Those who embrace the identity of a servant are the best leaders.
• You can have lots of abilities, but without credibility you won’t be able to lead.
• As your credibility increases, so does your effectiveness.
• Credibility is built over years of work and years of God working on our character, yet it can be lost in a moment.
• If you love and fear God, He will direct your paths, grow your character, and expand your capacity to take on greater responsibility.
• The expected difficulties are easier to manage than the unexpected ones.
• More than leaders need to introduce new values, they need to remind the people of what has already been decided and declared as most important.

The Rooted Leader by Eric Geiger is an interesting read. His core argument is that lasting leadership starts below the surface. The roots you cannot see are the ones that determine whether you stand strong in the storm or topple when the wind picks up.

Whether you lead in a church, a business, an organization, or a family, the principles are sound and the practical next steps give you something to actually do.

Here's my honest confession: the deeper I got into the theory, the more I realized I was not the primary audience. In places it reads like a transcript from a men's group at a mega church, and that's just not a register that resonates with me. Not a negative, simply a matter of fit. The leadership is solid and the roots run deep. This particular reader just wandered in from a different garden.

For sound principles and a thoughtful approach, I'm giving it an honest 3.5 stars. Just not quite for me.

The Rooted Leader by Eric Geiger is an interesting read and not just another ordinary leadership book. This insightful resource actually helps readers become more rooted and grounded by focusing on what takes place beneath the surface. The book examines and highlights the leadership skills exhibited by the Old Testament prophet Nehemiah.

I found this book to be an excellent tool for developing strong leadership skills, regardless of what type of role one possesses. It examines the seven rhythms of leaders who bear lasting fruit.
